Ascavia is a single continent planet, the continent is diamond-shaped with a few islands at each edge. The continent is referred to as the Mainland and the islands are named the Borderlands. The Mainland used to be a paradise housing four flourishing nations: Vixen, Mera, Nova, and Eros. Vixen the nation to the north, Mera to the east, Nova to the west, and Eros to the south. The discovery of coal and its potential gave birth to the industrial age, which in turn gave deep excavations. The excavations were important to supply the world with this new found power source, but most importantly as dig sites delved deeper the discovery of "Hexite" was made. This took decades to occur but once hexite was discovered and experimented with, it soon replaced coal. One pound of hexite produced one hundred times more power than one pound of coal. The fact that hexite was in the form of crystals allowed it to be formed into any shape allowing it to be incorporated into anything. This boosted production and scientific breakthroughs, unfortunately one of those breakthroughs led to "The Fall."
No one knows for sure what caused The Fall some speculate animal experiments gone wrong, dangerous bacteria research, mad scientists, or a extreme power plant failure. Regardless of the cause, it led to at the time what was believed to be monsters unleashed on the public. Later it was learned that these "Monsters" were cases of human and animal exposure to extreme amounts of a unique type of radiation. Grimmwood, the research center and ground zero was conducting secret experiments that was to be revolutionary. This outbreak spread like wildfire and every attempt to contain it was futile resulting in The Fall.
The Fall, the age in which the four nations conducted plans to evacuate the Mainland seeking refuge on the Borderlands. Millions of people sought refuge on small, barely inhabited islands. Due to the limited space important figures were accommodated first, then the rich, and finally first come first serve. This resulted in millions being abandoned on the Mainland. At first the military helped fend the Grimm (The mutation was named after ground zero) off as citizens were evacuated but as the evacuation process came to a halt the military presence dissipated. For years the Borderlands fought off the Grimm but it was a losing battle so a secret plan was set into motion, "The Rise."
The Rise is the creation of floating cities in an attempt to escape from the breakout. The Borderlands were known for its mountains and volcanoes but mostly importantly the abundant hexite within them. With the use of massive amounts of hexite hex generators and thrusters were made to lift four massive floating cities up into the sky. Once again majority of the population was left behind, only the facilities and shelters on the mountains and volcanoes were defended and supported by the sky cities since it was their sole source of hexite.
A hundred years later, the year is 1842, the four sky cities still fly up high and the four Borderlands still stand strong. The four nations on the Mainland is now in the skies; Vixen the northern star city, Mera the eastern triangle city, Nova the western circle city, and Eros the southern crescent city. Each city now follow a circular route forming a four-way venn diagram pattern that patrols the Mainland and Borderlands. This it to keep from becoming a sitting duck that is picked off by flying Grimm. Each city comes in contact with three of the four Borderlands and are tasked with protecting it and resupplying it with fights in exchange for fuel, trade, minerals. Along their route they come into contact with each other as much as two times a year allowing them to trade goods and labor since each city focus on certain parts of society and use that as a barter system. Each city has a buddy system in which they stop to resupply on water by docking in the middle of the ocean which is converted to fresh water. this leaves the cities open for attack from the seas and skies which is why the buddy system was established. Each city must draft soldiers and workers to the Borderlands to keep them functional and since life in the skies is much more peaceful than on the ground overpopulation is counteracted with migration to the Borderlands. One complete revolution takes one year to complete. There is about four months in the Dry Season (Furthest point away from the Mainland, time of winter or drought), two months of Spring (Before and after the Dry Season), two months of Summer (Sections closest to the Borderlands), and four months of the Hot Season (Closest point from the Mainland, most dangerous time of year). The Dry Season is when the north and south are in winter, the east and west are in drought. This takes four months because engines are placed on low power to keep from overheating during drought and are conserved during the winter to focus on heating the city. During the Spring seasons water supplies are filled and the most production takes place. During the Summer seasons trade and migration is at a all time high. During the Hot Season curfew is set in place, defense is at a all time high, and the most causalities taken place in this season.
Every city is self-sufficient but to boost efficiency and production each city has a main task, a city specialty.Vixen is the city of exploration and scavenging, it is home to the Sky Rangers. Sky Rangers is the only force that enter the Mainland to seek out Old Age technology. This is the equivalent of the gold rush. Ever since the cities have taken to the skies, old technology has become a rarity, contrary to the name Old Tech tends to be more advance. This is because a lot of information of the old age has been lost, for example knowledge on how to build a compass is rare and the supplies to build it are even rarer. Items now are more restricted to the resources that the sky cities and Borderlands can obtain, so lots of hexite and metals. Plus, people just like to have tech of another time so even a simple teenager's journal is worth a pretty penny. So, Vixen's main contribution to the four cities is knowledge on the Old Age and Old Tech. Mera focuses on food since they stay close to the equator. Nova is close to the equator as well but their specialty is industry. Eros is the fastest city which is good for their military focus, they also deal with the dead. Eros borders a island part of the Mainland that the four cities use as a graveyard that usually the rich and important figures make use of. And this is Ascavia.
