Literate Versions of Common Roleplays

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Gabriel_Whist on Wed Jul 21, 2010 8:59 pm

So I recently created an Avatar RP, Order of the White Lotus, with literacy requirements, that I've been strict in maintaining, and I've actually managed to find a pretty damn decent cast. This more than I had hoped for, as I generally see Avatar based RPs swamped with low caliber writing, and low quality players. This caused me to think about all the common kinds of RPs I see, where I would find the game enjoyable, if it weren't for the quality of the writing and players found within. So I'm thinking about creating a series of RPs, based on popular topics, or ideas, that will have smaller casts, greater plot depth, and strict literacy requirements to ensure a strong cast, and a thoroughly enjoyable, and high quality RP.

Currently I'm thinking of:
- A vampire/lycan/creature of the night style RP, that would focus less around the romance and attempted bad assery, and more around a strong plot, and both the emotional and social complexities of being such a creature.
- Some form of school based RP (probably a magical or supernatural academy of some sort), that would focus around a coming of age story, and character development, as opposed to popularity, bff's and flirtation.
- Possibly a series of fiction based RP's, in popular universe, like my Avatar RP, done with higher plot focus and literacy.

If you're interested in being involved in such endeavors, or if you have any suggestions on other RP's I should include, I'd love to hear them, and I'd love to find a group of literate players I can message to check for interest when creating new games.

I am going to draw up a character for that Avatar RP, for one, and for second, I would like to see a magical academy story for people who are actually literate and can focus on character development and plot. So consider this interest from me!

Avatar by me. :)
See a word in my writing that you don't understand? Can't find the definition anywhere? I'm probably sponsoring it. Did you know that much of the communication we use today consists of only about seven thousand words? These poor dears have been removed from the dictionary--but you can help bring them back!

Unfortunately there are no more character slots in the Avatar RP. I created it with only five character slots, not expecting to find much interest, and they've all been filled. I'll let you know if I open up anymore character slots, and when I get an academy based RP up and running though. Sorry about that.

Sorry, mate. Vampires and Schools simply don't tickle my fancy. No matter how high the writing quality is. Something a little more obscure (ReBoot, for example) would absolutely make my day.

Hahaha, I love the Reboot! I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid, and I had action figures of most of the characters as well. Don't remember enough details to create an RP though.

And vamps and school based RPs were just the first two examples that came to mind, being the most overdone, and usually the worst done.

I'm sure the episodes of ReBoot are on the interwebs somewhere. I would like the prospect of playing a different game everyday. That would make an RP of ReBoot a lot of fun, because then you'd never know what kind of genre you'd be playing next.

If you're looking for something overdone and worst done, there's always Naruto. I don't recommend that, though, considering the fanboys/girls it would attract.

Kingdom Hearts would also work, but again, I don't recommend it. For the same reasons, too.

Yeah, but the same goes for Avatar, and I managed to find a literate cast. I mean, Naruto isn't of the same caliber as Avatar, and it's fans likely aren't as well, but still. Kingdom Hearts is an awesome game, but I really have no idea how it could transition into RP form well. I'll try working on both sometime soon though.

Hmm, a Kingdom Hearts thread from you would be quite interesting. Especially considering what I've seen you do with worst done franchises like Avatar. Hell, I'd love to see something as cheesy as Dragon Ball from you. Too many Dragon Ball games focus too much on fighting and powering up and not enough on telling an actual story.

Try basing an RP off games like:

obsCure
Modern Warfare
Killing Floor
Tekken
Mortal Kombat
SSX (freestyle snowboarding)
Warhammer 40k

To name a few.

Or movies:

Inception
The Poseidon Adventure (with another boat, not the Poseidon.)
The Day After Tomorrow
The A Team (Not RP the members of the titular team, just create characters and form a new A Team)

Again, to name a few.

Also, I'm gonna throw a few of the ideas I have rolling about my head here:

- Murder/mystery RP. Have a group of RPers, select one to be a murderer, max of 2 to be detectives/cops/FBI special agents/whatever to figure out who the murderer is, the rest become potential victims. The way it could work, is that everyone else RPs, posts and everything, but the victims and detectives have to ignore whatever posts the murderer makes. Whenever the murderer gets an opportunity, he can PM one of the potential "victims" with a kill notice. The murderer and the target now have to become involved in a side-RP that will eventually lead to the victim's death. The murderer has to leave clues behind for the detectives to pick up, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they are. The clues have to point, in some way, to one of the victims or the murderer. The murderer himself can be known to the victims and detectives, but has to conceal himself well enough so as not to attract attention. To keep the RP alive, of course, the applications for victims can be left open. The RP ends when the detectives figure out who the murderer is, accuse him of being the murderer, and proving it with evidence they collected over the course of the RP. A new RP with the same basic premise can be started over and over with the same RPers and same characters (possibly), but with different motives, different murderer, stuff like that. A murderer's ranking can be identified based on the number of successful kills he has. One kill, just a murderer. Two, serial killer. Three and higher, psycopath. 5 and higher, mass murderer.

- Storyline Crossover. Let's say that the entire universe is made up of multiple, smaller "sub-universes", each containing the story, characters and plot-line of a different work of fiction. Marvel, DC, even anime, movie, cartoon and book universes exist. Now, let's say that at a certain day, at a certain time, the universes begin to fall apart. Some universes merge, others collapse into themselves, destroying all life and erasing everything that existed within it. Some of the universes merged, their characters interacted, and they have to figure out a way to reverse the universes destroying each other.

- Music-based RP. This was an old idea of mine, but I think it might be interesting. My basic story was this: a world, powered by music. People owned many different sorts of instruments, guitars, trumpets, flutes and the like, and the music they made balanced out all the darkness in the world. There were some, however, that were corrupted by the dark, their instruments made fiercer and more destructive, and they sought to bring about a new world by destroying the old one. Some of the good musicians, however, possessed instruments that could literally change the world they lived in, and these musicians set out to stop the corrupted ones from destroying all they lived for.

- Horror RP. A group of young adults are on a road trip when the van/bus/mini bus they're in breaks down. Nearby is an old, seemingly abandoned mansion. As the group make their way towards the mansion, their vehicle promptly explodes into a bazillion bits 'n pieces. The group, now stranded without transport enter the mansion, and the entities that inhabit it trap them inside. They have to find a way back out of the mansion and escape from it before the spirits and ghosts drive them insane.

Sounds like these are all ideas you should try GMing yourself DJ. I'm doing a series of literate versions of common, overdone, and generally poorly done RPs. Things that have become cliche, and often trite. None of the things you listed sounded like they would fit in such a series.

Fact is, everything apart from the murder-mystery RP, I've GMed before. I've been here 3 years, lol.

Though, I am willing to revive RPs. I've posted a new Interest Check. Why don't you (pardon the pun) check it out?

If you can find the right plot for these, I'd be willing to give it a shot - but generally vampires and schools don't do it for me.
