Re: Is Marriage a Religious or Legal Institution?

@Script: I've known homosexuals who oppose equal-rights "Civil Unions" on the basis that they should get the same name for it. I find them to be as uncompromising as the homophobic bigots. You're right, the name shouldn't matter, but a good number of homosexuals still have idealistic view...

Re: Is Marriage a Religious or Legal Institution?

In an ideal world, then it should be called the same thing -- but because of the religious connotations, it might not be the best thing to be aiming at right now. Baby steps. I'm not saying that it shouldn't be called the same thing -- in every way it should, in fact, but I think looking at things ...

Re: Would you kill baby Hitler?

Okay, first off: THINGS DON'T HAPPEN FOR A REASON. I don't really know if I would kill the baby Hitler. On the one hand, (assuming it's possible to change the present and future by altering the past), things could go well and the Holocaust could be prevented. On the other hand, media has taught me t...

Re: Gender, Sex and Identity - linked, or not?

Now, try to look at it from a bit of a different level. Psychology also teaches us about the ego – or as some have come to understand it your “false self” which I think is a bit different than what you will find in a regular text book. This “ego” is what absorbs what goes on around you. It feels re...

Re: Is my RP too complicated?

Normally I say that there's no such thing as "too complicated" in roleplays, but as QB said, I dislike the use of numbers to keep track of things. Everything else is fine (weapons, map, etc.) is fine, but the points and cash will probably turn people off -- although there is an audience fo...

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

Yes it is. lol. A very good description of war as well. I think its kind of odd that people say we shouldn't torture because we are a civilized society that doesn't do things like that, but war itself is uncivilized in the first place. Are we not still killing each other over petty differences? Are...

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

War is dark. Black as pitch. It is not a God. It does not laugh or weep. It rewards neither skill nor daring. It is not a trial of souls, not the measure of wills. Even less is it a tool, a means to some womanish end. It is merely the place where the iron bones of the earth meet the hollow bones of...

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

The article I linked before is pretty good proof, and you haven't argued it against it yet. Quote something from it, like I did, and then you'll have a legitimate argument. You argue with me, not the article. I already did. Doesn't that imply that you think it works, or at least think there's a sig...

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

PROVE it doesn't work. The article I linked before is pretty good proof, and you haven't argued it against it yet. I'm not arguing whether or not it works, but I am arguing that it is the only viable means to the end we're trying to achieve. Doesn't that imply that you think it works, or at least t...

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

Where did I say it works or didn't work. My argument has to do with whether or not I condone it, not whether or I think it's a valid means of extracting information from someone we know is trying to endanger our lives. That we do know, and that's reason enough to validify the usage of torture. So, ...

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

Alucroas wrote:Unless we actually hook it up to someone who's being tortured, and record the data then all that is really just an unconfirmed theory designed to discredit the validity of torture. It has to be tested in the field, not in a science lab.

What evidence has been produced that torture actually works?

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

As for everything else: quote sentences or paragraphs from the articles, show me something in bold. This is you arguing with me not the newspaper. Sure. It's become the conventional wisdom that the tortured will say anything to make the torture stop, and that "anything" need not be truthf...

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

Non sequitur. Explain how it's non-sequitor don't just say it is. Otherwise you're doing nothing but slinging words at me. Actually, calling it a non sequitur is too vague. More specifically, it's an appeal to hypocrisy, a type of ad hominem (which is itself a type of non sequitur). Wikipedia . I t...

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

Most parents would kill or brutally beat anyone who threatened their child, which therefore makes anyone who says torture is wrong to protect their country an automatic hypocrite. Non sequitur. That exact same mindset is brought to torture, only in the case of torturing a person we're talking about...

Re: Is Waterboarding Torture and Should it Be Condoned if su

As a soldier, the brother of a soldier, the son of a soldier, the grandson of a soldier, and the cousin of a soldier... I stand firmly in the 'Whatever keeps our boys alive." War is hell. If you want to know how hellish it is, watch "Buried In The Stand" (or something like that) ... ...

Re: ~Inception vs. Avatar~

Neither, both are completely overrated and overshadowing far superior movies such as Dark City, Paprika, Dances with Wolves and even Pochohontas. I've not seen Inception, but I've seen 1 and half hours of Avatar and it irritated me how blatantly it stole from other great movies. I can fully admit i...

Re: Religion & Politics

Atheist socialist here. I don't believe in any gods, and I think that we should: have a mixed economy, give everyone in our country free healthcare, open our borders, legalize all drugs, focus more of our efforts on education and the public school system, and things like that.
