Time ticked by too slowly. When was Kevin going to be back? He said he'd be off at around this time.
Karen sighed, and checked in. She had to eliminate all the sounds that surrounded her, to focus on Kevin would be a challenge and a half.
Just as she thought. There was a hold-up in the electronics department. Karen looked around from where she was sitting. Someone had knocked over the shelf that held head-phones, even when it was bolted to the floor, the vibrations of the crash help her locate her husband, now bending over to see what had gone wrong. She sighed again, Kevin wouldn't be back for a while. Maybe she should get over to the Costco, find out if she could help.
The leather of the old love seat creaked as Karen carefully removed herself, aware that she could trip over some soundless item in the room. She stomped her foot, which received her an invisible, but curious gaze from the apartment over. She couldn't see the person, but they could see her. A table appeared, and Karen made her way around it, into the coatroom, where she grabbed her denim jacket and headed out the door.
The hall was to quiet, but faint sounds from television sets, and people walking down towards rooms or elevators help Karen find her way out of the building. She always managed.
Back in the Costco, Kevin was frantically trying to lift the shelf that had fallen over. Piles of headsets and batteries were scattered all across the concrete floors of the isle, and people stopped to stare. They never helped, not much people do when something like that happens.
The shelf was heavier than ever, and it took Kevin some effort to pull it back to its upright position. He called for some assistance, and one of the other employees came over, screwdriver in hand.
Once managing to pick the shelf up and restock the falling items, Kevin dusted his pants, looking towards the door. He had a slight hunch that Karen would be wondering what was taking him, and knowing her, she probably already knew and was on her way. His feeling was right, sure enough, wandering as if lost through the front doors, was his wife. Kevin smiled, and made his way over.
'Sorry hun.' He greeted with a small kiss, Karen looked blankly past Kevin's left shoulder, her attention on his words, 'Hold up.'
She held up a hand with an innocent smile, 'I know Kev, I saw the whole thing. When you didn't come home, I checked up on what might have happened.' It had been three years since Kevin had found out about her sight, and even though he had those years to get used to it, he still had trouble remembering.
'Alright, then. Guess I forgot again.' He chuckled, walking over to the log book in the office. Karen followed his footsteps, and watched as he scribbled his leaving time.
'Let's walk then. I'm not quite ready to go home, since you're now here.' Kevin said, closing the book and leading Karen out of the store.
She shrugged, 'Alright, let's walk.'
Of course Karen could hear the activities that had happened in New York from the televisions of the buildings the two walked by. She was a bit shocked to view this, thinking that maybe there was someone else. Two at least, that could be a bit different like her. She stopped in her tracks, and Kevin looked at her with concern.
'Karen? What do you see?' He asked.
She looked down, 'The news.' And left her words at that. Kevin raised an eyebrow, but he read Karen's expression and never probed her for a deeper explanation. He pulled her arm to keep moving, while she listened. Their hands wrapped together as they paced down the streets.
I would cross a thousand miles for you. I would climb mountains and swim oceans just to be with you. And if you cried, I would be there to make things better. But if I said I love you, would you laugh and turn your back on me? Would you take advantage of my love then break my heart when you were finished? Or would you hold me in your arms and say Ditto?
