Melissa doesn't sleep, in the sense that she slips into a state of semi-conciousness. She meditates. Insomniacs can rouse her, if they're loud enough. If the elves make enough ruckus, she'll wake up to investigate.

Alexis is kinda like a sinister force, in that he only wants Isabella as a way to cement trade relations between his nation and hers. Then again, he doesn't really understand what he's getting into. However, if Selinia could convince Melissa it would be to Alexis' benefit for her (Selinia) to be queen, that would be even better
