Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know it's the end of the world,
`cause you don't love me anymore?
Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars glow above?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when I lost your love.
I wake up in the morning and I wonder why ev'rything's the same as it was.
I can't understand, no I can't understand, how life goes on the way it does!
Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when you said good-bye.
For some of us, it's parents, brothers, sisters, friends who have died at the hands of the beast, others it's a lover, the one person we were sure we would spend the rest of our lives with. Nothing is the same, yet the world keeps going around. Only the people have changed, and that's enough to make hope start to diminish.
STORY
It's modern day in a moderately big city. After searching for years for immortality, a group of scientists come up with a serum that they believe will at least lengthen life by fifty years. After trying it on a test group, things go horribly wrong. Not only did it not lengthen their lives, it killed them. Discredited and struck by their own carelessness, the scientists keep the groups bodies for testing. What they discover changes everything. Somehow, their minds are dead, and their hearts stopped beating, but they are still animated. After only a day of testing, the bodies begin to rise, walking around the compound where they are being held. Relying solely on instinct, these new creatures begin feasting on each other. Three scientists make the fatal mistake of entering the room that they occupy. Two die, one is just bitten. But, the remaining scientists decide it's too risky to continue with their experiment. They dispose of the zombies, for that is what the group had become, and go back about their lives.
The one that was bit returns home like nothing ever happened. Within a day of the bite, he begins to feel sick, feverish, his heart racing in his chest. Before the day is up he is dead and his family is mourning. The next day, at the funeral home he comes back, and begins the end of civilization.
Most of the city is dead, most of the world is dead. Now, it's up to the remaining survivors to group together and find a way to safety and a way to defeat the beasts. The second may bot be entirely possible, but at least they can find a place where the zombies won't intrude. And maybe in finding that safety they will learn that though they may have lost everything, there is still something good out there to look for. Maybe love can still find a way to shine through the darkest hours.
