Adenovirus 423

Adenovirus 423

After WW3 happened, a virus was born. This virus kills people in their 20's. No one is older. There is no cure... But there is a prophecy...

Introduction

Throughout time, man has been at war and each time, man has survived, though many died. But, everyone knew that it would not always go that way. In medicine, doctors and scientists strived to create cures to everything, but how far would that go? Viruses adapted and gained resistance after a while, and man strived to find a new cure/vaccine. Again, that had a downfall, just like war did. Man continued to fight, using bigger, better machines and getting more advanced in technology before finally it just went too far.

Between 2080-2100, a third World War crippled humanity, bringing them to the verge of extinction along with many animals and plants. Man practically destroyed the planet. Despite having vaccines and cures for a lot of diseases and viruses. With the outbreak of the third World War, and the advance in nuclear weapons, radiation caused mutations and mutations caused new variants of old viruses.

Today, in the year 2200, with adults dying out at the age of 25 from this new virus called ADV423 (Adenovirus) which attacks the respiratory system, homosapiens are struggling to survive. It is unknown what causes the virus to activate but people up until 21 aren't affected. The life expectancy of people in this day and age is now between 23-25. The people around today are trying to find a cure, but its a race against time for some. Cure's take time, and time is something a lot of people don't have.

Since the war, many cities have been destroyed, and yet to be rebuilt, but with limited resources, people and knowledge around, it's hard. Not to mention, with the virus killing people from 23 onwards, it's harder. But there is hope. Passed down through the generations of survivors was what most would call a prophecy, or a legend others would call it. Either way, it's given a lot of people hope. Hope that one day things can return to normal and mankind can pull through this dark time. The prophecy speaks of a key that will solve many of the problems. But with the many people that believe, many also think it's just a story. And with the good people out to find the key, to cure the deadly virus, there are also people out there to exploit it's power, or even destroy it.

The Prophecy

Long ago, towards the end of the 21st Century, a third world war finally broke out. Man fought day and night against each other, killing only because of greed. It wasn't until man was on the verge of extinction, having completely destroyed most continents, leaving little. It was at the beginning of the 22nd century that they were forced to stop simply because no one could do anything any more. The virus had already mutated and people had started dying...

...There is one thing left to save mankind though. A Key. This Key can cure 1000 problems and also cause 1000 more, yet it doesn't fit in, nor open any locks or lead to any rooms. The tender love, and beauty crafted into making this Key, flows from top to bottom, to be seen by all. When staring at 'The Key' no one is any wiser, and neither is 'The Key' itself.

The Virus

ADV423 means Adenovirus - 423 is a flue like virus that affects the respiratory system. The adenovirus was around before but of course, with medical advancements a vaccine was made. It starts off as a simple cold at the age of 21 Image which slowly develops into a chest infection before it just takes over your body by 23, causing breathing problems and other sorts of things, also listed below.

The worse been Respiratory Disease which is the term for diseases of the respiratory system. These include diseases of the lung, pleural cavity, bronchial tubes, trachea, upper respiratory tract and of the nerves and muscles of breathing. Respiratory diseases range from mild and self-limiting such as the common cold to life-threatening such as bacterial pneumonia or pulmonary embolism. [Yes, from Wikipedia] Also chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma are problems caused through this virus, eventually leading to death at an age between 23-25. What makes this different to before. This adenovirus has mutated to work a lot faster. A hell of a lot faster then most and developing at a rapid rate over two years before finally killing its host.

Another thing that makes this virus unique, is that everyone has it. Not from birth, but from a young age. It just stays dormant waiting until that person hits a certain age before it's activated. And then, the victims just have to await death.

The Histories

The North - Known as The Disciples. Their goal was to find 'The Key', then use and manipulate it towards their own needs. By exploiting 'The Key' they could cure themselves, and only who they wanted to cure and then use it to gain power over the area and become the one true ruler.

The South - Known as Loki's Kin, after the Norse God, Loki the trickster, their purpose with 'The Key' is to destroy it. Like the North, they are competing in the race to be the first to gain ultimate power so they can rule over everything and everybody. The fact that 'The Key' can cure everyone doesn't matter. They just want to destroy it and have complete control.

The East - Known as Obsidian Knights, the East, unlike the North and South, is out to protect 'The Key'. It is their purpose to find and protect it from the North and South so they can eventually find a cure to ADV-423. The East are allies with the West.

The West - Known as Thanatos Instinct after the Norse God of Death. Despite this gang been named after the Norse God of death, it is fighting to survive and searching for 'The Key' in hopes of curing the disease and prolonging life. The irony is they're in a gang known as Death, but doing everything in its hands to find a cure, with or without 'The Key'.

The Underground - Motto: ab hinc ab aeterno (From here on from the eternal) These have control of the old subway and sewer systems underground in No Man's Land. They want the whole of Humanity to become extinct. They want to kill everyone including this 'Key'. They don't want it to gain anything from it. If they find 'The Key' they will kill it - if it's a living thing.

Andrew. The Keep. Headquarters building. 1 hour before the arrival of Eve's forces.

Andrew was in his office, relaying orders faster then he could think of them. He had maybe at best, an hour to prepare, worst case scenario was ten minutes.

"I want the hospital evacuated as fast as possible, use whatever trucks or CAV's we have in order to carry those who can't walk. Launch all vehicles in order to escort the convoy to the river outpost, and tell the Outpost to scramble the zodiacs down the river in a search pattern."
He flung papers around as he searched through the archaic defense plans put in place before him, the former Captains must've been out of their minds...

"Recall everyone outside the Keep and have them regroup on Pennsylvania avenue in the ruins." There were about four hundred to five hundred Knights outside of the East's territory, it would be impossible for them to beat Eve's troops here, but Andrew had a plan for these scouts.

When he recieved the confirmation that the order would be followed Andrew walked to the door and locked it tightly. He wiped a hand over his face and threw himself into his chair, messing with the radio's frequency.

As the number read 113.5, a pop of static was heard.

"Challenge: Lance."

Andrew waited for the proper response to come, the response that only one other knew.

Thatcher.

As the radio crackled, a familiar voice came over the airwaves. "Challenge accepted, Ivory Tower. Stand by."

After another minute, a rough, deep voice, a voice that sounded far too old for the body that housed it, came from the speaker.

"I just heard, Ivory Tower. You calling in the deal?"

"Screw the deal right now." Andrew responded. "I got something better for you, like the Northern assault force."

He sighed.

"Eve's decided to make her move. I guess she's on her period or something but the bitch has completely lost all sense of reason. I'm expecting her forces outside my walls within the hour. You know what happens when there's a firefight of this magnitude? Both sides wind up hurt, but I can assure you, she will suffer more loses then I. I can't make a promise on POWs, but if you ever needed a window of opportunity for your attack on the North, well, it doesn't get much better than this."

A pause.

"When has Eve had any sort of reason? She's as rotten as her father." Another long pause. "But I appreciate the call, Ivory. As soon as I recover something of mine, I'll be in a position to fully assault the Disciples. And believe me - that time will come very soon. Is there anything you need from me? Evac, passage - anything?"

"Just keep an eye out on the outpost by the river, there aren't as many soldiers there, it's mostly sick, wounded, children, and pregnant women heading there, about 700 non combatants to be guarded by 450 soldiers. If Eve hits there with any force it'll be a bloodbath."

Andrew sighed.

"Oh and Twitch has decided to dissolve the East-West treaty....have fun with him all you want. But you wouldn't happen to know anything about a missing scout of theirs would you? I had to go through a rather unplesant accusation."

Thatcher's grin came through the speaker, loud and clear. "I'll keep the buzzards off of your fresh meat, Ivory, don't worry. As for some missing scout - I fail to see how it's any of my business that Twitch can't keep track of his own men. Though, it's interesting that you believe one's so far down here. Interesting indeed."

There was a pause, and then Thatcher spoke again.

"Good luck, Ivory." His tone was gentle; clearly genuine. He didn't want to see his ally go up in flames.

"I was only speculating, perhaps it was Eve's troops that got him, who knows, but Twitch is content on blaming me for it, so I'm content with not warning him of a southern convoy walking towards his doorstep, should the occasion arrive."

He almost laughed.

"Well, Lance, here's hoping this isn't the last time we speak. I'll contact you with a status report on Eve's forces after the battle." He waited a moment before switching the frequency of the radio back to his operating channel.

"Jacobs, you read me?"

"A bit hard over all the other orders, radio is a damn mess, but I can hear you sir." That was Jacobs all right.

"Bring the package to the Wall, I want to have something to show Eve's troops when they arrive."
..............
Andrew and Preston. The Keep. Western Flank's Wall. Moment's after Eve's demands.

There was a long silence as Eve's speech came to a close. Needless to say every man on the wall gave each other a glance. Andrew stared silently at the ranks of the children, only tilting his head to his side when John approached him.

"Sir...when Tyler and I showed up at the Medical building....the girl you sent us to gather wasn't there....when we asked around....well....it seems Twitch took her...."

"And the gunfire from earlier?" Andrew's face had an unnatural calm, even for him.

"Twitch and his men tried to escape using the humvee...they crashed outside the minefield near one of the checkpoints and the Knights there were able to take a woman into custody, but...Twitch and the others got away."

"How many men did we loose?"

"Well..." John was beginning to become unnerved at Andrew's silence, he'd notice how well he got along with that girl....he would've thought he'd show some emotion. "About twelve wounded."

"I see." His radio crackled to life and he pulled it off his belt, telling John to fetch him a bullhorn. "Go ahead." He said into the device.

"Sir, It's Liza. Mike and I were setting up our mortar near the med bay when we were approached by that merchant friend of yours. He said he and that eye-patch girl wanted to help with the fighting. Mike thought you'd allow it and got them a couple rifles and some armor."

"Mike was right, let Matthias know that I'm grateful." In truth he had his reservations about letting Jessie fight, what with her being an asset. "At the first sign of a breach, I want them heading to the Outpost though. No excuses."

"I'll let them know." He heard the click of Liza turning off her radio and turned to Jacobs, who stood by his side, holding a certain someone by the arm.

"Jacobs....do you think I've done what a good leader should do?" He asked.

Jacobs was taken aback, even at the act of evil that they were faced with, Jacobs never expected this kind of question from the Captain.

"Of course I do sir."

"Do you trust me?"

"With my life."

"Good..." Andrew nodded as he took the bullhorn from John. He sighed a deep breath as he brought the speaker to his mouth.

"Evelyn Roan....I just want you to know that what I'm about to say is not for you." His voice echoed through the silence that took hold of both forces.

"I am speaking to your soldiers, and to mine. Men and women who are loyal enough to follow the orders of people like you and I, people who will burn in hell for the atrocities of this war."

He paused for a moment.

"This conflict isn't about us. For us, it's already too late. This war we fight is not for ourselves, but for them."

He jerked a finger to the ranks of children standing in front of a live minefield.

"It's to make sure, the the next generation does not have to see evil deeds like this. We are fighting to protect our children, and our children's children. We, are the last, best, hope for humanity, and I remind you I am not only speaking of the men and women with me on this wall, and within it but I am speaking to those that stand in front of us as well. I am speaking to you Disciples just as much as I am speaking to my Knights. Our lives, have already been decided, we have already failed our children, we failed when they lined up in between two armies. Our only hope of redeeming ourselves, of making it up to them, is to live, and to ensure that something like this never happens again."

He paused once more, giving a nod to Jacobs who pulled Preston forward.

"To the Disciples who are ready to give their lives attacking this place, I ask that you think about what I am saying, but I am aware that some of you bear a hatred of myself that will deafen your ears to my plea. And so I will present you with one of your own. Now I will not lie, he was interrogated, as we live in a time of war, but ask yourself, if the roles were reversed, would a Knight even be alive still?"

He handed Preston the bullhorn. "Go on, speak, your brother is out there isn't he? I know you are not like Eve, you have a conscious, think about what will happen if we fight here, do you really want to watch all those children die?"

Preston sat in the corner of a dark room shivering. His fingers bloody and mangled, distorted into unfamiliar shapes. The blood had stopped pouring out of his mouth, but the pain was still there. He couldn't eat or sleep. He couldn't even find a comfortable place on the cold concrete.

He'd no idea how long he'd been here and in pain now. Night and day were blended together now that he was in complete darkness. Time dragged by giving him no relief. The Knights didn't come by to check on him much. They just checked to see if he was alive. He couldn't escape even if he wanted to. He was too weak.
After what seemed like the pain and darkness would never end, the door opened and someone came inside, dragging the young boy to his feet and out into the light. Now it was time to die.

The light hurt his eyes and the person who'd grabbed him practically had to drag him. He was pathetic and useless. When he saw Andrew, he realized that everyone was surrounding them. There was utter silence. What was going on? The only thing Preston could think of was that they were going to make an example of him.

And then Andrew started speaking and Preston took a good look, horrified at what was happening. He was even more horrified when Andrew pushed the bullhorn into his hands. He yelped in pain, dropping it.

Through tear stained eyes, Preston waited until it was picked up again and pressed. "Wyatt." He paused in pain. "Get. Me. Out. Of. Here. Too. Please." He managed to say in pain. Andrew had tortured him for no reason. Eve wouldn't listen to someone like him. So he hoped that the only lifeline he ever threw to his brother would be taken. If they were attacking, hopefully Wyatt would feel sorry for him and come and grab him too.

"I'm willing to let you go to them." Andrew said, causing Jacobs to give him a questioning look. "Just, try and convince them not to do this, I don't mean Eve, I mean the others. You are one of them, maybe they'll listen to you. I'm aware that you may hate me, and I accept that, surely one day I will pay for my sins, but those children are innocent. Listen to me Preston, are you really going to let them walk across a live minefield?"

Preston stared at Andrew. Either way he was going to die. If he went back to Eve he was sure that she'd kill him for just being here. Heck, he was sure that Wyatt would kill him, if he bothered to try and rescue him. Then again, brothers meant nothing to Wyatt. Preston had only ever been an annoyance.
But he knew Andrew was right. The man that had allowed the torture of a fourteen-year-old boy now wanted that same boy to stop hundreds of deaths. Why would they listen to him? What power or authority did he have that would make them listen to him? If he stopped them, Eve would definitely kill him when he was back there.

The spike impaled in his mouth still was going to make this painful and drawn out. "They." A few deep breaths between each word. "Won't listen to me." It took him a while just to get one sentence out. Preston took a deep breath. "I can't just say stop. And going back will get me killed." He took another painful breath and looked at Andrew. He knew that he'd be screwed now. Nothing was going to save him from this. He'd either die at the hands of Andrew, or Eve.

"Well Preston..." Andrew sighed. He was really considering off'ing this guy in front of Eve's forces, REALLY considering it. But that would only enrage them. "It seems you're unwilling to even try and save those kids' lives, I have misjudged you, and so you will watch what is going to happen just as we have to be the one's to do it."

Andrew pulled the bullhorn out of his hands and brought it to his mouth once more.

"To my Knights and to you children, I am truly sorry and will be haunted by the memory of this day for the rest of my life. Knights, you are following a direct order from your Knight Captain, I do hope that offers some of you solace."

He paused, contemplating what he was about to say.

"Evelyn Roan, my response to you is this; Open fire."

And the guns of the East would deliver the message in turn.

Sitting in the back of one of the beat-up trucks they'd used to travel across No-Man's-Land, Eve lay with her feet kicked up, the bullhorn resting in her lap as she listened to Andrew's speech with a bored expression on her face. All around her, the Disciples were staring up to the crest of the hill that guarded them from their enemy's eyes, many of them crouched just in case the tops of their heads were visible. She had convinced them that they had numbers on their side, and a ruthless leader who would guide them to victory. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that there wasn't a single person who was more feared than she.

The thought made a tingle of pleasure travel down her spine. With a small smile, she picked up her short-wave radio, putting the receiver to her lips as Andrew continued to drabble on about the noble way to go about things.

He was so fucking naive.

"This is Commander to Watchdog, come in Watchdog." she spoke softly, with the volume on the radio turned down. A few people turned to glance at her, as if they couldn't believe she wasn't even bothering paying attention to what Andrew was saying.

"This is Watchdog, Commander. Over."

"Is Wyatt's team in place? I want to make sure that he has a free and clear path, over."

The radio crackled noisily. She was quick to turn down the volume even more, holding the radio close to her ear as Watchdog's voice came back over the speakers. "Confirmed, Commander. Wyatt's team is positioned as you've requested, over."

"Make sure he's reminded of how delicate the situation is. Andrew may be a patriotic child, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a head on his shoulders. If Wyatt fails, and if I lose Jessie, there's going to be a lot more bloodshed than necessary." She paused. "Over."

The people around her immediately returned their attention to the voice echoing to them over the crest of the hill. None of them wanted to be on the receiving end of Eve's wrath, but those who would be responsible for the first wave of attack didn't want to feel the bite of Andrew's bullet. They had a small distance to cross before they reached the minefield, and it would be a dead sprint, with not a whole lot of firepower to defend themselves with. Then, if the children didn't make it across the minefield...

Well, they'd be screwed, essentially.

Eve had this in the back of her mind, too. Andrew was limited on firepower, but she was even more limited. She was relying on scare tactics, psychological warfare, and numbers to win this. And even then, Andrew was so caught up in the idea that she was here to obliterate the East that he was failing to remember one important detail.

Eve was here for one thing, and one thing only. Putting a hurting on the Eastern forces was just a major bonus.

Shifting to a kneeling position, she stepped out of the back of the truck, walking amongst her forces before coming to a halt next to the front line. The men and women all lay crouched, with semi-automatics in hand. Each of them had one or two extra magazines attached to their hips, but anyone in their right mind knew that it wouldn't do them much good if the East opened fire on them from a higher vantage point.

Task one was to get the children into the minefield anyway. With body parts and dust flying into the air, the Easts view of the oncoming forces would be distorted, at best. She put her hand on the shoulders of the few who stood next to her, adopting a look of stern determination. She found that this was better to motivate people over looking sadistically pleased.

Inside, she was giggling like a school girl.

"You're going to wait for my signal before we begin the onslaught." she told them. "I have a man in position just a little ways from here. He's going to get the children moving. Your job will be to encourage them towards the field with as little firepower as possible."

They didn't look at her, simply nodded. More than one person was feeling sick at the thought of opening fire on the children.

But all was fair in love and war, wasn't it?

She picked up her radio, rising to her feet and making her way back to the truck. "Commander to Nighthawk, confirm your position, over."

An indistinct collection of words and numbers came back to her over the radio, bringing a smile to the North leader's lips. "Excellent. You may begin when you hear the code word, over."

She went back to the truck, leisurely swinging herself up into the bed before taking the bullhorn and setting it to her lips.

"I don't think there is a collection of people who care less about how you feel about the situation, Andrew." Eve said with a slight roll of her eyes. "And here you stand, thinking that somehow you're much better than I am, that your tactics are far superior, that you are the noble man, that I am the Devil's advocate." She straightened, sitting on the edge of the truck and looking towards the compound, still safe from their eyes.

"But here you are, using a child crippled by your own hands to deliver a message more pathetic than your attempt at selfless bravery. You've murdered, Andrew. You've had to kill innocents too. In this world, the only way anyone can gain the upper hand is through flexing metaphorical muscles and choking the life out of the man standing next to us. Its a dog-eat-dog world. Survival of the fittest. There's no room for chivalry. And good intentions died with our grandparents."

She grinned again. "This is our world, Andrew. Mine and yours. We have no one to blame but ourselves for how fucked up it is. But really, if I'm going to hell in a hand basket, I may as well make it worth my while. So go ahead, stand behind your wall of stone. Make yourself feel better by continuing to run your mouth, but nothing you can say or do is going to stop us, to stop me, from doing precisely what I have come to do."

There was a breath of silence, and Eve could feel the tension rising up all around her. People clenched knives, arrows, and bows, archaic weapons, but useful ones when the bullets ran out. And they would run out, for both sides.

"So build that wall, Andrew." she finally said.

From off to the army's left, the quick rat-tat of an automatic weapon errupted from the trees, spraying a small wave of bullets behind the children who stood patiently at the opening to the gate. Eve's forces did not move.

The children screamed, unaware of the danger they were about to put themselves in as they were essentially herded into the minefield, trying to flee the bullets. Left in the dust was a child who had strayed too far from the group, a blossom of blood spreading out between his shoulders.

Eve waited, listening to the screams with closed eyes, a serene expression on her face.

Then the first explosion made the ground rumble, sending dust and dirt and other unrecognizable substances flying into the air. The screams became more panicked, and several more explosions came in quick succession.

It had all happened so fast.

Eve's eyes opened as she withdrew a flare gun from a holster at her side, holding it high in the air before firing it over the battle-field.

The first wave of forces moved then, a three-thousand man wave that came up over the hill and sprinted for the entrance to the minefield. Up ahead, the children were still, the air thick and clouded with dust.

Then the atmosphere was rippled by the sound of the Disciple's gutteral roar.

Wyatt and Areli ~ End of East's Minefield

Wyatt sat and watched the hoards of children lined up in entrance to the East's minefield. They were ready to move across it as Andrew tried to come to some resolution with Eve. Like that was going to work. He was getting impatient now. He just wanted to get in, get Jessie, and get the hell out of there. Then, once successful, hopefully he could be rewarded with Eve between his legs in bed once more.

Turning, he glanced at the small group of five men with them. They had everything they needed and Wyatt had assigned himself leader despite there being more capable men of the job.

He still had a grudge with Areli though. He almost wanted something to happen to the man so that either he didn't come back with them or did something that resolved in him getting killed by Eve. God, Wyatt would love to watch that. So much so he started fantasizing about it. That was until he heard his brother's pathetic voice begging for his help.

So they'd kept him alive. Wyatt smirked. Big mistake. If he could he'd get to Preston and shoot him dead himself. Or maybe that would be too merciful. Maybe he'd leave him to suffer at Andrew's hands.

So many options...

Areli knew that Wyatt was still sore about Areli's little show in front of the men earlier. Areli did not care but knew that Wyatt was probably going to try to do something about it later. No matter if Wyatt was screwing their leader. He was still a kid in Areli's eyes. A kid who now had power over him. Areli sighed softly then noticed the little kids near the minefield. Looking at Wyatt, Areli wondered if he knew about this plan.

Damnit, Areli thought, Damn you, Eve. It was sickening thought of how she came up with that whole idea. Areli looked away as the leader of the East spoke. Areli felt his stomach do a few flips and twists as the thought of the kids blowing up played in his mind. Areli looked up to Wyatt as Preston began to talk though there was no real use for him doing so. Eve had made up her mind.

Areli turned and tried to take his mind off what was going to happen while waiting for the battle to offically begin.

Wyatt blocked out all thought. He hated the idea of the children being used as weapons but he knew better than to argue to Eve about it. He was already in the shit with her for showing emotion in front of her. He sighed, trying to think of something else now.

"You're team in place?" A voice came over the radio.

"We're in place and ready to go." Wyatt replied.

"Good. We'll give the word when it's time to move."

"Got ya." Wyatt looked at the others and forced a grin in the dire situation. "We've gotta get ready to go so make sure you are. When we're in we're getting the girl and getting out. If you happen to see my brother on the way, kill him."

Wyatt showed no emotion with his words.

Areli listened as the radio came to life. Areli was only laying down a man over from Wyatt. He purposely laid there in order to be close enough to hear anything but far away that Wyatt can't shoot him on and call it an accident.

Rolling his eyes at what Wyatt said till he mentioned his brother, Areli was surprised to hear the lack of emotion. Preston was a bit annoying but he was Wyatt's family. Apparently the change of Wyatt becoming the leader of the squad was not the only change in Wyatt, he no longer cared for his own flesh and blood.

As the thought of flesh and blood came up, Areli thought of the kids again. He wondered how Eve would react if her own daughter or son was out there. It was curious that their leader had not tried to sire a replacement by now. She was getting old and the virus was likely to strike soon meaning the window of her having a kid was getting short. Areli sighed as he also realized that his window was closing as well.

Pushing the thought aside, Areli loaded a round in the chamber of both his pistol and FAL as he waited for the word to start their little 'rescue' operation.

"Does everyone know what they're doing?" Wyatt asked. "We need to make sure we're all on the same page. Don't want anything to go wrong, do we?" He chose to look at Areli as he said the words.

He wanted to make a point. The point exactly he wasn't sure about right now, but he was going to get his authority across. He knew that Areli didn't trust him.

"And do you, Areli, know what you're doing?" He made the point to ask.

Areli listened as Wyatt asked the men if they knew what they were doing. Some of the men nodded and one of them spoke up saying yes. Areli knew his job. He would not let the mission fail while he was still breathing. Nothing would stop him.

Areli popped his head around the guy in front of him as Wyatt addressed him. "I am the pointman. I position in front of the rest of you, I call out targets and also check for potential ambush spots." Areli answered, "I also am most likely be the first one to die because I am the most exposed." He looked at Wyatt defiantly. It was also Areli's job to help figure out where Jessie could be.

"Good. So you know not to fuck up then." Wyatt told him, before listening to the other men give out their positions and what they were supposed to do. He nodded but in reality he wasn't really listening. He'd just wanted to take a snap at Areli.

"She's in there somewhere. We're going to get in, get her and get out. Kill whoever you have too. I don't care. Shoot anything that moves. Man, woman or child unless you identify that person as Eve's sister Jessie. That's a direct order from me." Wyatt told them. "And Eve."

That was a little lie, but he was sure that Eve would agree with him.

Areli shook his head as Wyatt snapped at him. Still a kid, he thought to himself. Areli listened as Wyatt added the rules of engagement. After Wyatt finished saying there were basically no rules, Areli spoke up, "Ummm.... Sir... We are supposed to sneak in and take Jessie. Would it not be the smart thing to only fire when fired upon so we do not give away our position and have more troops try to kill us than we need?"

Areli grinned a stupid little grin. "I mean once we have Jessie that rule of engagement you have would be nice but until then why cause a firefight when we could slip by a group without much hassle?" It was clear that Areli knew what he was talking about compared to the inexperienced Wyatt.

"We're doing it my way. I don't appreciate you butting in with how you'd do things." Wyatt frowned. "Just stick to your own damn job and do as I say." He went back to watching the children and everything that was going on. He was tense, waiting for the envitable to happen. He hated the thought of what he was about to witness. But it was part of the job. He had to harden himself to it.

Areli moved over and grabbed Wyatt bringing him close to make sure he will get the message. "THIS IS NOT SOME DAM MEASURING STICK OF WHOSE IS LONGER. MY JOB IS TO PICK OUT TARGETS WHO ARE A THREAT TO US FAILING THE MISSION. UP UNTIL WE GET JESSIE, WE DO NOT WANT TO GET INTO EVERY SINGLE FIGHT THAT WE CAN EASILY AVIOD. THAT WILL END UP WITH US FAILING THIS MISSION AND EVERY ONE OF US WILL BE DEAD." Areli pushed Wyatt on his ass. "GET THAT THROUGH YOUR FUCKING HEAD. WE FAIL. YOU DIE ALSO. DOES NOT MATTER YOU ARE SLEEPING WITH EVE. YOU WILL DIE ALONG WITH US." Areli growled lowly to make sure Wyatt got the point. "We will do it my way as far as rules of engagement are concerned. You can control everything else but let the man who knows what the fuck we need to do in order to make sure this mission succeeds."

Areli glared at Wyatt as he took up his position in front of everyone, adjusting the straps on his vest and getting ready for all hell to break loose.

Wyatt was shocked when Areli suddenly had him by the shirt and was giving him the orders. None of the other men were surprised though. They knew Wyatt had it coming to him. Him and his wreckless thoughts.

"Fine. We do it your way." Wyatt growled finally giving in. "It doesn't work though, or I see reason to change tactics, then we do things my way." He told Areli. "Now get the fuck off me."

When Areli pushed him down, he stumbled before making his way back to his things, checking to make sure everything was in place and once again sulking over how Areli had suddenly and easily taken control of him and the situation.

Finally he looked up as the children started to move. Shooting started and chaos erupted. It was time to move.

"Let's go." Wyatt gave the order and started moving. "Try not to do anything stupid or get yourselves shot. Stay mixed up with everyone and see you at the other end." WIth that Wyatt disappeared within the crowd, determined to get to the other end unscathed as everything exploded around them.

He blocked out the screams. He blocked out the cries. He blocked out everything but the thought of getting to the other side alive.

Areli shook his head from his spot. Areli expected Wyatt say that. Not that it mattered though, It was more likely to keep most of they from dying than Wyatt's way. Chaos started gunfight when off. Areli turned his attention to the minefield just in time to watch a helpless child get shot down. Areli's face hardened just as Wyatt gave the order to move out and disappear into the crowd till they reached the other side.

Wyatt left and Areli began his run. He ran fast enough to make sure he was a hard target for the enemy but slow enough that he could avoid the dead bodies and probably places for mines. Areli came close to a few mines. He knew because 2 seconds after gettting past the place he was at exploded. Areli ingored almost everything around him as he ran. This could help him if they finish the mission with success as much as it would help Wyatt. Areli began to hum an old song his mother liked and sang to him to help him sleep.

The fight is over your souls, Sons of Thunder, Calling the fire down, Burning with hope, Sons of Thunder, My only weapon is truth, hatred's more powerful or so it would seem, sapping my belief in all the things you have shown in the secret, song played in Areli's head the way his mother sang it.

Five years before ADV started - Twitch and Adem

First mistake? Taking drugs after my dad died, second mistake? Thinking Thanatos was a bad idea. I've seen some serouisly fucked up shit.

"Oh look it's you, the newest addition to our little family, a little twitchy aren't you?" The dirty, bearded man replied, leaning over a younger Twitch. Where were they? He didn't know, he just wanted to live in the past, take drugs and survive. "Haha, I'm gonna call you Twitch."

Twitch looked up, shoving the figure back as he got up, he'd been sleeping on a dirty mattress, the room around him was full of empty needles, mixed narcotics scavanged from stalls and supermarkets, he'd been in this drug den for weeks now. Why? To get away from this, fuck Loki's Kin, fuck everything. Why the hell was it him, him and his dad.

"Fuck you. Get out of my room." Twitch said, not trusting this guy. Wasn't he called Greg? "Aww come on, I was having fun." The guy replied, waving his arms about. What was this city called? Dunwich? ...Gregtown? Fucking hell, where was Twitch's memory?

That's when he was punched, the hit making him stagger back, jaw hurting. Oh god, this guy was one of those violent addicts, right? Twitch returned the punch, tagging him in the stomach, there it went, the two of them punching it out for almost no reason, ah fuck, now he remebered where he was.

Wasn't there a cult here?

Wait.

What family?

Oh...

Fuck.

The fight turned deadly in Twitch's head, this wasn't the drug den, this was the cult's base of operations, inside... Still can't remember, the drugs still had him, this guy wasn't Greg, this guy was someone else, maybe one of the cult members? What was it? Day three in Noman's land?

Twitch thought quick, grabbing a nearby needle, not something he'd shot up on and stabbed it in the strangers gut, yeah, not Greg at all, and looking at the bloodstained needle and then at his wrist, too large, he had to get out of here, wherever he was, now that he looked further around. What was that on the walls? Some ripped piece of fabric with some runes on it... Runes? Where'd he learn that, didn't his Pa tell him about the vikings or something? There was a gang a while ago his dad had been in? Thana- Thanatos? Something like that, but no time for memories, Twitch kneed the stranger and pushed him off, throwing the needle away and cupping his mouth around the stranger.

"The fuck are you?" The stranger simply smiled as blood gushed out of his chest, Twitch slowly let him down as not make any noise that could alert whoever else was here. "I st- Still win." The cult, that was familar too, weren't they trying to extingush the human race? Fucking scumbags. Fuck them. Fuck this.

Twitch stood up and violently stomped on the strangers throat untill he stopped groaning, this wasn't the time to shoot up, maybe this was a sign to stop fucking running.

"What was that?" A voice echoed though the corridors, Twitch rushed to the side of the doorway, closed the door, this was a ruin, maybe two stories high judging by the cracks everywhere and the pitter patter of rain on the roof, the door had it's glass window smashed, allowing the person that had heard the stomping a view though it, spotting the corpse.

"The hel-" Twitch spun around, slamming against the door and shoving his hands though the crack in the window, forcing his fingers around the other mans throat and strangling untill there was a few faint gulps and useless gurgles.

Twitch could feel the blood sugar pulsing though his veins, he slowly opened the door, pushing the body into the room with the other one, looking over it. Robes, red ones, this was the hotel turned cult church alright. Far from the drug den, what had he done to wake up here?

Twitch turned around, patting himself down, nothing but the clothes on his back, a ripped shirt and equally as ripped jeans, now judging from the place as much as he could remember from his slurred memory, there must be about seven...? seventy? cultists.

Fuck.

"What're we doing this far out?" Adem asked the older male.

"Hunting. Looking for anything that can help us out." He replied.

The man he was with would be seeing his twenty-fifth birthday in a few days time. He was already wrought with the deadly virus. The man was coughing up his lungs most nights and Adem was sure that the last time there had being a few small specks of blood mixed in with the mucus.

Neither talked about the virus though. They didn't want to talk about the death that his friend was going to be facing soon. This year was going to be bad. He would suffer a long and painful death. The virus wasn't a quick thing. It wore you down, bit by bit, making you suffer until the end. Your chest hurt, you limbs ached, your head felt like it would explode. And the fact that you could barely whisper a sound, due to the coughing fits you'd have...

It was too much to even think about it. He'd seen his mother and father suffer the same disease. In fact, most of his friends and family had died because of it. You didn't not see it. Even with the ruins of Thanatos and the limited people there, you witnessed the horrible virus.

Thanatos had been ruined in a battle years before. No one was sure from which area the attack came from, some said North, some said South. East were their allies though and for the past few weeks they'd been in talks about how to try and fix up their compound so it was at least liveable inside.

But his friend, for some reason had dragged him out into No Man's Land currently. The reason for this he was unsure about. One thing he knew was that they didn't have to hunt like he was claiming. Something else was wrong.

Duncan led him into a building that was derelict in No Man's Land. There were a few corpses scattered around the big building. Noises could be heard echoing throughout the place. Adem looked around confused and now slightly worried. Had his friend gone insane?

"What are we doing here, Dunc?"

"I need to ask you a favour, Adem."

The boy, barely sixteen years of age frowned. "What favour?"

"First off, how's things with Fiona?"

"She's fine. We're fine. What's going on?"

"How's Leon?"

"He's okay too. You know this. You saw them both a few days ago." Duncan was referring to his two year old son, and his girlfriend who he was aiming to marry soon, as soon as the church was built. "Now, stop with the bullshit and tell me why we're here."

The older man sighed and looked around. A look of recognition and resignment passed over his features, like he was giving up on things. Adem frowned, wondering where this conversation was going to lead. He had a pretty good idea suddenly and felt his stomach sink.

"You've seen me lately." He was interrupted by a coughing fit. "The virus is taking a hold of me. I'm twenty-five in a few days. It all goes downhill from there. We've both witnessed what the virus does to people-"

"Dunc-" Adem started but was interrupted by the man's hand.

"Shush, let me finish." He spoke. "I noticed blood in my mucas the last few days. I'm entering the first stages of death. The virus is active in my system, coarsing through my veins, attacking my cells, taking over my body..." He shook his head, coughs making his chest heave as he fought to stop so he could continue talking. "I can't let it take full control of me. I can't let my friends and family witness this."

"I can't..." Adem started knowing what his friend was asking without saying the words.

"Please Adem."

Duncan produced a 9mm Buretta M9 and let his fingers glide over the grip of the gun and then the barrel, admiring the weapon he'd chosen to end his life.

"Dunc..."

"Please Adem. I know you'll do this for me. I need you to do it. I can't let this virus take me." The man frowned. He held the gun out to his friend who didn't move for a minute. When Duncan thought that Adem really wasn't going to help him, Adem took the gun, silent. There was a painful expression on his face. A dark acceptance.

They said no more. Adem moved closer to the man, contemplating life and the virus. Contemplating the choices people made. Contemplating what he was about to do. Without warning, Adem moved the gun to the back of his head and shot, only after muttering the words: "Goodbye, my friend."

The gunshot caused the ruins to become a flutter, giving Twitch time to run, pausing to step back and look at one of the walls, there was a reinforced two by four pole built onto the wall with nails, he curled his fingers into a fist and punched it a few times as the cultists scurried out of the walls and doorways downstairs, oh thank god, a distraction. The timber split loose, slinging it onto his back and running down the stairs, he wasn't right in his assumption, realisticly there were only a couple compared to his number, about thirty or so.

As reckless as he was in real life, he woudn't leave the guy who caused the reaction alone, it wasn't something Twitch would do, he pulled the nail timber from his back and hoisted it his hands, rushing down the stairs and jumping, hauling it over his head and smashing a cultists skull with it, attracting the attention of two more, who had wickedly curved blades made out of random scrap metals chunks and ecetra.

"HELP!" shouted Twitch, hoping to get some help, clearly.

Adem held the lifeless body of his friend, mourning over the life of the man he'd known for years and mourning over his decision to take that life. The pain was over now. The man was free to live where ever you ended up after death. He was free. And Adem was stuck here left to deal with the fact that he'd killed his friend.

It was as good as being a cold-blooded killer. A murderer. Adem didn't cry much, but he cried now. Until he heard someone shouting for help. At first he thought he'd imagined it, but people running and scattering about - some in fear, paying no attention to the fact that it was him with the gun that had just killed a man, indicated that maybe something else where.

Adem moved in the direction that he'd seen everyone come in. There he saw two men attacking another. Without thinking, Adem lifted the gun and shot them both. He hadn't thought to check the chamber to make sure bullets were there. But them dropping like flies to the ground indicated that their had being more than one bullet, thank God.

"You okay?" He asked the man that had been attacked.

"I don't know." Twitch replied, nail timber lowered, revealing the needle marks all over his hand, representing his desperate effort to restore the past... in a cowardly manner. Twitch was different, way different from his future self, who'd never resort to such a thing, but this is different, another time.

Long ago to Twitch, by only 5 years. "We gotta get out of here, I have no idea where this is, but I'm too fucked up to fight more of these... guys."

Adem nodded. "Come with me."

With that, he turned back and headed back down to the room where he'd murdered his friend. Making sure the man was okay, he checked the belongings, wondering if he'd left anything for his wife and children on him. Nothing. Sighing, he pulled the body out of the building.

When they'd come into the building, Duncan had motioned to the hole dug outside. Adem hadn't known what he'd meant then. Now he did. With that, he laid his friend to rest and made sure to cover the hole. He didn't speak to the man he'd saved from death for a moment, he didn't even look at him until he was done.

"I'll take you back to Thanato's," the worn down Adem, who was covered in blood stated.

"Why'd we bury them?" Twitch replied, dropping the plank of nailed wood atop one of the holes. "We've only got about twenty years to live, why waste hours of it?" Twitch didn't know much back then, Adem... Adem had been his guide as much as he'd been a guide to Adem. "Thanatos?"

"Thanatos is dead, right?"

"He's my friend. It's respect to bury friend." Adem wasn't going to admit to killing him. He wouldn't tell a soul. It would go to him with the grave. He was embarrassed and ashamed by what he'd been asked to do and the fact that he'd done it.

"Thanatos is in ruins. We're trying to build it back up. We've got East on board to help us. There are only a few of us, 200 or so, but we're starting. That's the important thing."

"Why?" Twitch asked. "Forget it." Twitch then added and scratched the back of his head. "Let's go then, thanks for the help, but I think the others if theres more in there might jump out if we don't start moving." Twitch looked at his feet, no shoes, only lots of fabric rolled over his feet dozens of times.

Why? That answer would be answered when he led.

Adem started moving. "Why'd I have respect to bury him or to rebuilding Thanatos? It's just my morals to the first. And to the latter, we need to get ourselves up and running. There are three other factions all good and strong, but they don't have spirit. They want to find the Key for their own personal use and stuff. They're focused on fighting, not on saving humanity. They don't care about the others with them. They don't know a thing about the relationships between loved ones and friends... That's what Thanatos used to stand for, and that's what it's going to stand for again."

"Forget it, I said. I don't join factions, so much bullshit." Oh how Twitch was wrong.

"We're not like the other factions. We care about each other. We're like brothers and sisters to each other. We watch out for one another." Which is why I killed Duncan like he wished, Adem thought, a wash of pain coming over his face. "So, where are you from?"

"Forgot. Can't remember. Don't want to." Twitch replied, shaking his head and putting his hands into his jeans pockets. "Sounds like a great faction, like a real gang, something that Dad might've been proud enough to live for." Twitch muttered the part about his father, grunting and then saying.

"You?"

"Thanatos born and bred." Adem answered. "Name's Adem." He added at the end, not sure how to continue the conversation. The man wasn't exactly talking in buckets. "And it is a real gang. We're the only real gang." Adem confirmed.

"It seems like all the kids these days are in gangs. Not that I'm implying you're a kid." Twitch replied, pulling up his shirt as the dust kicked up on their walk, tying it over his neck and mouth.

"Got guns?"

Adem looked back at Twitch. "We're doing what we need to, to survive as best we can. I have a kid and a woman back West." He told Twitch. "We have a few guns. Hopefully East will supply us with stuff when we get up and running. They're a useful ally to have technology and gun wise."

"Better hope you keep them, put on a mask or do what I did with my shirt unless you want to be coughing blood, there's a sandstorm or whatever you call it incoming. They're frequent, as I've seen in the distance at... A place near here." Twitch said behind the shirt wrapped around his face, raising his arm. "Is it far?"

Adem moved a cloth to his face. "It's an hour or so this way." Was all he answered. And he continued to walk until they made it through the ruins of the Thanatos ruins and into the territory. "Welcome to Thanatos..." He trailed off waiting for the name of the man he'd brought in.

"Looks like shit." Twitch nearly replied with his real name, no, he'd left that behind. "Names... The names..." Twitch paused and pulled the cloth down, spitting onto the dirt ridden floor. "Twitch." And on that day, the legacy of the new wasteland legend started, the man called Twitch who lived and... died for his brothers and sisters in Thanatos. The legacy that'd shine brighter than the stars itself and who'd inspire Thanatos to survive and persist like it always had.

"Everything looks like shit nowadays, though, right?"

Areli Lovell and Wyatt Daniels - Eastern Wall

He just kept running. That was all he could do. If he stopped at any point then he could end up dead. Wyatt made sure that he was surrounded in a sea of children. He ignored that they were only children, sealing off any conflicting emotions he may be feeling. All he knew was that he had to live. He had a point to prove to Areli and he had to complete this mission and get Jessie back to Eve.

He often made sure that there were a few kids as a barricade in front of him, some at his sides and some behind. If some in front of him were taken out by bullets, he replaced them with kids from behind him. If they were taken out by a mine then he made sure a group filled that gap.

Effectively he had a shield of children to protect him. And despite his feelings about using children for this, now he was only thinking about himself and getting his ass to the other side. If that meant that he was ordering the kids to create his human shield then that was what was going to happen.

Areli just kept running. Everytime he saw someone set off a mine that was the direction he went. It was not pleasant but it was an easy way to avoid the mines and a better way than using the children. The only problem that he had to contend with was the bullets that the East were firing. Areli made sure there was another soldier in front of him. He did not order them there but merely used them as a shield till he need to change directions or they fell.

The mission was practically suicide and they needed to get through to the wall after reaching it. Areli eventually saw the wall in the distance. He picked out his route to the meeting place and continued the way he was going. He wondered how many of the other men would survive the minefield. They had 6 total including Wyatt and Areli himself. It would be amazing if they had 4. It would not take long to find out.

Wyatt was covered in blood by the time he got to the wall. Some of it was his, more of it was other children. A couple of bullets had nicked at his arms, but other than that the majority of the blood covering him had been when his human shield had been penetrated by a mine killing several children immediately. He'd come close to getting killed three or four times by a mine. And his life had been saved almost a dozen times by other children dying in his place. At several points he'd even picked up a kid to protect his chest. Each time one was shot he dumped them and replaced them by another child.

Finally though, he'd made it to the wall with only 2-3 other kids left protecting him. Most had died on the way over. Once at the wall he paused to catch his breath and ignore the guilt and emotions that were trying to rise inside him. Putting a block on everything, Wyatt pressed himself against the wall and went to find the others.

Areli watched as people he knew and did not know get killed or miamed by the mines. His face took a hardened look to it. He did not like this. He did not like it one bit. He reached the wall. He was covered in blood and other bodily matter. Some of the blood was his own. He was nicked by a few bullets but not enough to bother him or stop him. The rest was from the people around him getting shot or blown up by a mine.

Areli looked at the few others that also made it to the wall. None of them were from his squad. He sighed and began to move towards the spot they destinated. He turned and kept an eye out for the others. He saw one almost reach the wall before a bullet tore throw his leg. He fell and there was a resounding boom that caused the earth to kick up.

Areli cursed under his breath then kept moving to the spot. It would not be long and the mission from there would be a whole lot harder. Areli shook his head thinking that reaching the wall and getting in was the 'easy' part of the mission.

Finally Wyatt saw Areli. He kind of wished that the guy hadn't made it. Then he could have dominated the whole group. As it stood though, Areli was dominating him not giving a damn if Wyatt was in charge or not. Maybe when he got back he'd complain to Eve about it. Maybe she could do something. If Areli made it back out of the Eastern compound.

"Have you seen any of the others? We'll give them five minutes, if they haven't shown by then we find a way in. We need to get in as far as possible before they move back. The further back they get before us, the harder it'll be for us to get into the hospital wing." Wyatt told Areli trying to get some form of command back despite Areli telling Wyatt what was going to happen before they left.

"How many smoke grenades do you have?"

Areli checked his belt again. "I have 2 smoke and 2 frag." He noticed how Wyatt seem like a kid who was told there was no Santa Claus when he saw Areli alive. "Also sorry to disappoint you in not dying though there is still plenty of chance for that to happen later." Areli added in a sarcastic tone that he had been using with Wyatt since his 'promotion.'

Areli did agreed with Wyatt on how long they had to wait for the others. "We are for sure down one man. I saw Brown get hit by a bullet then fall onto a mine. Best case: we lose no one else and worse case: we are the only 2 that survived. Best worse case is that 4 of us survived." He sighed as Garett showed up next to him as he finished. "Best worse case? How does that even exist?" he chided Areli.

Areli shook his head. "Nice to see you too. Any word on the others?" Garett looked glum. "Smith went down after we split but I don't know about anyone else." Areli began to scan the minefield and either side of the wall of the last member.

Wyatt nodded. "Okay, that's what I have." He told Areli, his tone portrayed disappointment that they had the same weaponry. It was like Wyatt wanted to have more of everything, be better than everyone, be the most powerful in the team, or something.

When Garett turned up, Wyatt had asked him the same question as to what grenades he had, and he had the same too - no surprise there. Wyatt looked at his bloody watch and nodded. It was time to go. It looked like they'd lost half the squad. "Stevens obviously hasn't made it either or he'd be here by now. Let's get going." Wyatt ordered.

Just then Steven's appeared from behind. "Hope you guys weren't going anywhere without me." He smirked. "I'm not down yet." He'd suffered a shot to arm, but he'd patched it up himself out of the t-shirt of a child that had been shot down near the wall. He was in pain, but he knew that he had to continue. If he didn't there was no point in going back North afterwards otherwise he'd be as good as dead.

"Nice of you to finally join us, Stevens." He told the man. "Now, let's get going." They'd lost two men. Not bad considering everything.

Areli looked at Wyatt before moving. "Remember what I said. Stevens guard our backs. Garett take point. I will pop smoke. Wait till it is out completely then move in. Wyatt, if you fire at ANYONE before we need to, I will put a bullet in you myself." Areli's eyes reflected the warning he was giving.

Garett took his spot while Stevens took his. Areli made sure his assault rifle hung from his shoulder properly before he reached down and pulled out a smoke grenade. Areli held it and waited as they began to move towards the end of the wall. Once they reached that point, Areli pulled the pin and tossed the grenade. After a few seconds, the smoke began to fill the air and it did not take long till the smoke blanked the area. "Go!" Areli said loud enough for them all to hear.

Wyatt grumbled as Areli gave the orders instead of him. He was supposed to be doing things his way, not Areli's way. He didn't kick a fuss for now though. They had to get inside. He'd sort out authority issues once they were safely inside.

Wyatt followed, gun up and finger on his tigger itching to shoot something as they got closer to the entry. He watched as Areli threw the smoke grenade in and then the smoke poured out. And when Areli told them to move, he did.

He was quick to move through the smoke and eventually got to the other side. One hand was on his pistol, just in case someone was lurking on the other side while he moved through the smoke though his eyes stung slightly. He saw no one and even when he got out of the smoke, he wasn't in immediate danger.

Out of the corner of his eye, Wyatt saw movement and turned to see someone coming towards him a few yards away. They'd just turned the corner of a building and his eyes had barely set sight on Wyatt when he lifted his gun and pulled the trigger. The man - he couldn't tell if it was a solider or civilian from this distance, and he didn't really care - fell to the ground and didn't move. Satisfied, Wyatt turned to see where the others were.

Areli just made it through the smoke as he spotted Wyatt lowering a smoking gun. In the distance, a man was on the ground. Areli looked at Wyatt. His eyes reflected the luck of what Wyatt had just done. The problem, Wyatt still disobeyed what was advised.

Stevens looked at Garett who looked at Areli as he pulled out his knife on his belt. Areli stabbed Wyatt in the right forearm. He looked at Wyatt. "Next time, a bullet will go through you. You just hope I put it where you can still please Eve." He growled before removing the blade. He took a clean piece of cloth and gave it to Stevens, "Bandage him quickly then let's move out. This is where things are going to get messy." They were in. Now, they just need to find Jessie and get out.

War against the East - Andrew, Preston, Trys, Jessie, Matthias and SEN

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

Andrew fought to keep his mind from going blank while he repeatedly pulled the trigger, the Dragunov semi automatic rifle responding with it's loud barking at every squeeze. As he filled a position of leadership, he no longer had the luxury of letting his thoughts dissipate and instead simply focusing on putting rounds where they needed to go. No. He had to continue to stress over every minute detail.

He had to note everything. The faces of the men around him, the amount of mines that were being detonated and where, the number of times the forty millimeters fired off their grenades. It all had to be recorded and processed, for he did not fight one battle at a time, as the Knight Captain of the East, Andrew had to fight them all at once.

He could not believe the determination the Northern soldiers were showing; screw Eve, he could care less about that...thing. But it was the contiued rush of her forces that astonished him. His troops not only held the high ground, offering them an elevated position to fire down on the Northerners, but they were well fortified with several weapon emplacements.

And yet, everytime one from the north would fall, another was behind. Why didn't they break?

It was madness.

Click. Click. Click.

Andrew's finger pulled the trigger thrice and he did not feel his rifle buck in return. He already needed to reload...yet they still kept coming....

It would only take him a couple of seconds to place a fresh magazine into his weapon's receiver and begin firing again.

"Knights." He said loudly, over the operations channel of his communicator. "Get ready to move to fall back positions. All weapons are to be moved to the rear as well, nothing is left behind you hear me?"

The unanimous and numerous answer was heard at once. "Yes sir."

"Begin the relocation of emplacements immidiately, anyone who is not needed to move them is to remain on the wall and give them time to set up. From there we shall move to secondary fortifications in a bounding formation."

"Yes Sir." Came the voices of the men and women on the wall. Andrew noticed the trained knights begin taking apart the heavier weapons and take off with them towards the rear. He turned to his right, seizing Preston by the arm.

"Get up." He said sharply, shoving him towards Jacob who grabbed onto his shirt.

"Move him to the rear as well. He may have failed us but he still is worth something." Andrew growled, glaring at Preston before returning to firing down in a desperate attempt to slow down the North.

Driving the muzzle of his weapon into Preston's back, Jacobs jerked and pulled Preston away and joined the others. "I should shoot you..." He grumbled. "But I know where you're going, it'd be doing you a favor."

Preston paled as he was made to watch what happened next. The mines going off. Chaos. Children screaming and crying. They were running all over the place trying to avoid the mines. But a lot of them were caught up. One minute a child would be running, the next BOOM, they'd be splattered over other people in multiple pieces. It was horrific. What had Eve been thinking?

When Jacobs grabbed him, he winced, struggling to stay upright as he fought exhaustion and pain. He let out a cry as he felt the muzzle to his back and he was forced to move with the chaos that seemed to be ensuing behind the walls of Eastern territory.

If Preston thought that he couldn't pale more, he was wrong, Jacobs words terrified him. "What... Where am I... going?" He managed to get out at Jacobs though it was agony to talk, he wanted to know where he was going to try and prepare himself.

"Satan's nightmares."

---

Meanwhile, Trys was trying to make sure all the back-up defences were in place in case the walls were breached and North gained access into their territory. He was under strict supervision of course from soldiers to make sure the job was done correctly, they all were, but him more than the others, especially after his latest line of fuck-ups. They didn't even have to be given the orders to know that they had to make sure he did it all correctly.

What hurt though, was that Trys could hear the screaming over the firing of bullets. That he could hear the explosions and knew that a child had been killed with it. What he really wanted to do was go out there and try and save them. But his alliance was with the East and protecting the children and people behind their walls, not by trying to save the enemy's children. He did send out a silent prayer though.

"Everything in place, fuck-up?" Most soldiers used that as his name now. He was used to it. It bothered him, but he didn't do anything. The fact that Trys would have ended up punished if he spoke out at one of the soldiers. That had happened a few times and the physical exercise he'd been put through twice had been awful.

"Yes. It's done. And I did it properly. And I'm moving on to the next part." He told the man who turned to give out new orders and help move things. Trys looked up, watching other soldiers evacuating the civilians in the area still and making sure that they got to the right evacuation destination.

"Oi, fuck-up. Stop standing there and get to work. This is war, not a tea-break." Someone snapped at him and with that, Trys got back to work in making sure the defences for East were all set up and in place.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the moment the sounds of attack had started, Jess and Matt had both retreated into the confines of the medical ward, staring wide-eyed out of the small window as Andrew and Eve had their exchange.

Each time Jess heard her sister speaking, an involuntary shudder crawled its way down her spine, digging at that pit of revulsion she felt growing in her gut. Every so often she would glance to Matthias, her one good eye frozen wide with anxious anticipation...

...and then the children came out.

"My god no!" Jess choked, looking towards the door in a panic. If she went out there, could she stop this? Could she save those kids? Even at the expense of her own life...

"I can't let her do this," she said in a low voice, starting to make her way towards the door that lead back to the outside.

His arm shot out in front of her, his body quickly following as he intercepted her pathways, big bones a solid wall of flesh in front of her.

"There's nothing you can do." He said, his voice like broken glass. "There's nothing you can do, or say, that will change this, Jess."

The first explosion made the ground rumble, followed by the successive noise of screaming, high-pitched keening sounds of acute fear, followed by the gutteral, drawn-out cries of pure agony. It came in waves, the explosions continuing, swallowing her up until it was all she could hear, or focus on.

"There has to be something!" she shouted, struggling against him. "Jesus Christ! They're dying! She's killing them!"

Dry sobs shook her, and she began to shake, hardly able to support her own weight.

He gripped her back, his fists a tight anchor against the fabric of her shirt, gripping hard as he nearly crushed her against him. He wanted to stop them - the sounds, the sights, the near scent of fear that pulsed through both of them as the gunfire started - staccattos and rapid-fire drumbeats that shook the walls around them, making his teeth rattle.

He let go of her shirt, then. Big palms slid up her back, to her throat, and then coasting - coasting - until they rested over her ears. He pressed lightly, tilted her head to face him.

"Don't listen. Just... don't."

He shook his head at her.

Build that wall...

She dug her nails into the skin of his arm, struggling, a horrible choking noise echoing from the back of her throat. "Sticks and stones," she whimpered, "Break our bones, but words..." She was gasping, hyperventilating as she looked up at him, her good eye red, the other simply marred, ugly, scarred by that hot iron.

"I can't do this. I can hear them. It's my fault. She's..doing this because of me..."

He moved her, turning and backing up so that her back was to the entrance, and back was to the entrance, and he was facing the two corridors that lead towards them. With nimble fingers, he withdrew the small pistol he kept in his jeans, making sure it was cocked as he maneuvered his hand so that his arm was outstretched, steadily facing forward. His other hand clutched at the small of her back, pushing her even further against him.

"Think of nothing, Jessie. Go numb. Don't think about it." His hand had a slight quake as the gunshots furthered, his paranoia reaching a peak he had not known. He was scared - fucking scared of the North for the first time in a long, long time.

"I've got you." He whispered. The pistol shook. The rounds were loaded.

If Andrew failed to defend them; he'd defend her. He'd have to. He had a promise to keep.

And in that breath of silence that occurred between the rush of explosions and the oncoming tide of Northern soldiers...that desperately brief calm before the storm...the lack of sound weighed heavily on the pair, their ears ringing with the intensity of it.

And then, Jessie's voice came, calm and sure.

"I want to die."

-----

"Get a move on! Come on, come on! Get going!"

Sen's robotic voice rang out, riddled with static for the volume that they had been trying to force through the voice simulator. They stood at the side of the door as people rushed through it, ushering them past.

"No time to linger! Come on! They'll be here any minute! Keep runni- don't trample each other!" cried the soldier. They reached down, helping up some poor soul that had fallen onto the ground. Sen pushed them forward, watching as an endless wave of people flooded out from the gate. "Dammit...this isn't going to work!" cried the soldier.

That's when the first tremors hit.

Sen looked up at the trembling fortress, then began to sprint right past the crowd. "Get out of the way! Move!" they cried, running through to the entrance. "What the hell is happening?"

As Sen made it to the entrance, breaking the crowd, they pushed open the door, looking around.

The scene stunned them.

It was in their eyes, the utter shock and disbelief. Watching the little bodies just up and explode. Just like that.

Boom. Boom.

"...God dammit, Eve."
