Image

Background:

Sasha doesn't like to talk about his past, but it's apparent he was originally a Russian asset. How he broke ties with the Soviet Union is a matter of debate - perhaps he killed his handler and escaped, perhaps he was deemed no longer useful, or perhaps he is still working for them, even now.

Regardless, what is known of Sasha is that he was born 32 years ago in Vladivostok, where he worked with his father on his fishing boat. His father died of cancer before Sasha entered high school, followed by his mother's death a year later in a car accident. Sasha finished high school, but details are scarce after his mother's death, perhaps due to the government's growing interest in the young man.

During the next 10 years, Sasha was utilized by the Russian government as a reconnaissance unit (or at least, that's all they'll admit to using him for). However, this activity slowly came to a halt, and for the last five years, there is no data on Sasha's whereabouts or activities.

Six months ago, he appeared in Atlas City. This was noted and his activity since then has been monitored, but is deemed of little concern as he appears intent on living a normal life.

Powers:

Name - The Revisionist
[Changer – Level 6 or 7]

Sasha's powers are much easier to demonstrate than to explain. At its root, Sasha can manipulate any part of his body, whether that be his skin, bones, muscles, blood, etc. In practice, Sasha has used this to become another person, disappearing in crowds or infiltrating target areas for information. Another noteworthy example is his ability to harden his skin, making it nearly impervious to attack. It's highly likely that Sasha has some sort of ability to regenerate as well, giving his title of Koschei.

The exact limits of Sasha's powers aren't known, but it's very possible the man has yet to demonstrate the full range of his abilities.

Name - The Nine Hells
[???? - Level ??]

Sasha's Revisionist abilities seem to have a secondary force behind them, a template of sorts that Sasha follows. On the beach fighting the Beast of Decay, he transformed into a demon of fire, with magic spells to match. Other devil forms have also been noted. Further, Sasha survived several shots to the chest even after supposedly losing his Revisionist abilities. What strange energy lies within Sasha to give him these powers?

Power Origins:

The most likely origin of Sasha's powers (from evidence found within Russian files) is of either random chance or an anomalous incident. It appears that the government became aware of Sasha's powers shortly before or after his mother's death. Sasha himself has been less than forthcoming.

"Huh, okay cool, Henry nodded in surprise. "Super with a single. Hope you get it back on track! But hey, I'm just gonna cut to the chase. I just think whatever happened here is gonna happen again, and it's nothing anyone or any organization can stop or control with the way things are now. But it CAN be stopped, know what I'm sayin'?"

"I think, from what I saw here today, any number of the supers here could work together to prevent things on this scale from happening ever again," Henry continued. "Just so this little planet we live on keeps spinnin' a little while longer, you know?"

"I mean, Vicki isn't..." Cannonade paused, turning to look down at the woman beside them. "Super?"

Cannonade had not yet googled Vicki Vortex.

Richard had lost track of what was going on for a few moments. Several different people had arrived at the tent now, some he recognized, others not so much. That girl with red hair was... Vicki Vortex? Pretty cool to be honest. He liked some of her music, but figured (like many famous people) she wasn't keen on being bombarded by fans or something.

At any rate, his mind was still set on what 'The Alchemist' and Cannonade had said. He took another sip of his coke, finally polishing it off. "I guess the government that sanctioned this monster made the guy in the brown tweed suit that's melting on the beach too." He interrupted, placing the bottle and glass he held on a table. "Not the weird racist guy, by the way. Someone else I ran into when I first arrived. Looked and sounded like he was plucked straight out of the 1920's, or earlier. Had a double barrel shotgun with him, used bullets for it that're meant for hunting big game. Elephants even I think."

He paused as he looked firstly at Liz and Cannonade, then to Sasha. "I don't have a clue who Heather Wright is, but this guy I found had no idea where he was, and said he'd been hunting this thing in a swamp before. Then he ends up here, walking around while his clothes and skin fall apart."

Richard shrugged as he eyed up the others, new comers included, before continuing. "Kind of a weird detail for some government group to add in if you ask me. I don't think those soldiers in black belonged to any government either. That'd be way to risky of a move, and they were collecting samples. If it was Russia or China, they'd probably already have samples. If it was America, they wouldn't need to gun down their own men and women."

Finally, his gaze landed on Henry, narrowed slightly as he contemplated the man's motive. "And one last thing. The guy in tweed told me he disappeared from that swamp and ended up some place else before he was at the beach. He said he saw things as bad as this monster, maybe worse. And he told me there was a lot of them. Legions. Think on just how bad this one thing was, then think about what more than one could do."

The soldier shrugged at Sheri. "Whatever. If you wanna help, we've got people inside getting everyone organized. If not, you can always head to the triage centers and see what can be done there."

Vic stood there with her mouth ajar as she was assaulted by information from all angles.

"... Right..." She began as Richard's exposition came to a close. "...I don't know about anything you just said. 'Aegis'," She tossed him annoyed glance. "Don't call me boss. Your employer is dead. Cannon..." she looked to them, then sighed dejectedly and didn't bother. "And you." She furrowed her brow at Henry. "No."

Vic lifted her hands up and backed off. "No thanks. Not interested. Good luck."

Devon mulled over the theories in his head as the group spit them out at each other. Of course Liz with her decades of experience was a strongly skeptical of the more out there theories, Cannonade just chalked it up as an out of control super, the others clearly thought it was more of a supernatural origin, Richard most strongly with an experience that seemed odd in so many ways. He wasn't quite sure what to think of it all, but with all that happened around the event it didn't feel like it was something under the control of any government at the very least.

"Superpowers suddenly appeared on earth, we don't know how and why, are we just going to assume nothing else came along with it? As much as I'd like a simple explanation in the form of a run away experiment from whatever organisation... I don't think it's a possibility that can be ignored." He said thinking back on the events of the morning, that all hadn't been mere hallucinations something supernatural happened there and not in the normal superpower type of way.

"Also I don't know how much you guys caught of the beasts broadcasting, but I heard it loud and clear." he said while tapping the radiobox on the side of his head. "Miss Wright mentioned a date in the 1970's in English, so we can either assume the beast somehow got it's hands on a recording from a show we've all never heard of... Or this is a recording from a victim of that jello and it's been lurking beneath the waves somewhere listening in on the radio waves for a very long time. Neither of which are particularly comforting theories."

"Right then... if nobody needs medical attention," Ichiro began, taking a step to exit the conversation and giving Vicki and Cannon the finger guns. "I'll just be hittin' the ol' dusty trail...," he finished, backing away and moving himself deeper into the camp. His break was probably up anyway.

Yue giggled silently from behind her mask: what a nerd. She felt a little bad that he was shot down immediately after meeting his idol for the first time but it was fitting payment for the ribbing he'd given her. She turned her head towards Henry and the others, only vaguely listening to the conversation. They hadn't specifically addressed her, and acknowledging them would just needlessly reveal her identity. It was probably safer for them to keep her identity hidden and not involve them with the Witchfinders if she could help it.

With that decided, she began moving back towards the beach. At the very least she would do another pass to check for injured before she submitted to a med-scan and passed out for the remainder of the day. The numb twinge lancing through her frame when she moved suggested stress fractures, and Sairyn would more than likely force her into the bone-growth stimulater. At least it would be a nice nap either way.

That's about when she caught sight of Murder-Puppy confronting a pair carrying a woman, and Yue slowed down to a walk as she assessed the situation. Jericho seemed to be genuinely curious, and asking some innocent questions, but... it was the woman they were transporting that caught her attention. Limp. Possibly malnourished. Eyes open, distant gaze... she could be in shock... but they were walking away from the triage camp? Yue's eyes narrowed and she approached the group from a direction that blocked their way forward towards the beach, running her hand gently along Jericho's flank as she approached and letting it come to rest on his shoulder. The suit's external vox clicked audibly as it was turned on.

"The medical camp is that way," she informed in a mechanically distorted voice, gesturing behind them. "I can take her there for you," she said, holding out her arms expectantly. "I insist," she added, when it looked like they might protest. Yue's aura flared for a moment, and her luminous crimson eyes gleamed down at Niall from nearly a full ten inches above him.

Richard narrowed his gaze as he listened to what Vicki had to say, which was nothing he found particularly endearing. But Devon and Henry's remarks took his attention back towards the conversation on what exactly had happened today.

"I have no idea where this thing got those 'recordings' from, or whatever they were. But the old timey guy made it sound like he was brought somewhere where he could see more 'things' like the beast, or worse. Maybe it's time travel, or teleporting, or something to do with other dimensions. Not really my area of expertise."

At Henry's remark on where the man was now, Richard nodded slightly in the direction of the beach. "Out on the beach. He's not and old man by the way, or at least he wasn't when I first found him. But he is very much dead, and there won't be much left of him pretty soon. If you want to do some kind of investigation, we might want to head over there soon." He looked over towards Vicki Vortex, looking her up and down a moment, eyes still narrowed.

"I'm sure some of you are too busy though, what with music to release, or government rules to follow along with." His gaze flicked between Cannonade and Liz at the last part, and continued to look at the others in the room, those he didn't know yet. "As for the rest of you strangers, I'm ready to let you follow along if you're ready to stop being a stranger. Or if someone can vouch for you."

"I guess that's on me then," Albert said, running a hand through his hair as the guard led him back into the reactor. "See you around, Houndmaster."

At Richard's words, Sasha moved back out of the tent and towards where he had seen Richard. After a few moments, he found what was left of the man Richard had spoken of. Crouching down, Sasha studied the rapidly decaying remains with a hard expression on his face. A small bottle appeared out of the palm of his hand, and a small pair of tweezers in the other. Scraping some of the dying man's tissues into the bottle, Sasha sealed it and then moved to what was left of the beast.

There wasn't much that the strange men in black hadn't collected, but there were still a few smears here and there. Sasha duplicated the procedure he'd done with the man's corpse, then straightened and considered the bottles he held for a moment. He would need somewhere to study the samples, somewhere where he would be able to contain anything that might happen while he did so.

Signal Lost

"Well hold up...everyone here gave it their all fighting that thing. That's all the vouching we need, ain't it?" Henry raised a hand. "Anyway, all we can do right now about this is put together pieces of the puzzle. No need to fight about anything just yet...I don't particularly think this thing is government issue myself, but that won't stop them from coming in to make things worse..." he sat back in his chair, staring up at the roof of the tent.

"If anyone has a phone still handy, we can start by looking up this Wright lady. There's gotta be some record of her out there... " he spoke as he grabbed a stress ball from a table next to him and began to toss it in the air.

Time travel...that would complicate things, even if only on a technical level. But it didn't add up. Things like that, complicated as they were had rules. And he didn't have the means to peel back the layers. Not here, anyway.

Ooookay then. Alex was definitely out if his element here. This felt like a supers meeting and he was completely lost. A reminder that he was still a Vigilante, which is still illegal, and that everyone else here besides him, Vicki, and maybe one or two others were a lot more qualified and in the know when it came to stuff like this. He clenched and unclenched his hands nervously for a bit, not throwing his two cents in until it was abundantly clear that he really had nothing to contribute here. This felt awkward and it did not help he was looming over some of the people here.

He forced out a long breath and shoved his hands in his pockets to stop fidgeting. "Hey, look I get all this is important and we all just went through possibly one of the worst days of our lives . . . But this was already more then a bit above my pay grade, which isn't much anyway." He looked away from everyone's gaze to consider his words for a moment. " I'm technically a vigilante anyway . . . I'm trying to live a normal life, at least some semblance of one. I do this hero stuff because if I sat around knowing I have powers and can help even a little guilt would get to me."

He took a step back from the group and held his hands out apologetically. "I just want to go home, get something to eat that doesn't taste like awful nutrient bars, and maybe crash on my couch. If anyone feels similar, foods on me."

Richard was beginning to follow Sasha out, having thought of something too he wanted to check, but was stopped by Liz and Henry's words. He turned to face the older of the two, who's glare seemed to surprisingly take more years off, rather than add them on. There was a slight smirk on his lips before he responded. "Well last I checked, I was a nobody with no authority. It's incredible how much more I get done because of that. All that and they still manage to abuse their power." He gave a shrug as he pulled his mask over his head.

"Anyways, no offense ma'am, and I do mean that, but I'm not looking for anyone's permission." Richard turned to Henry and gave a brief shake of his head. "Firstly, we had villains fighting that monster too. All I'm gonna say Henry is be careful who you trust. Secondly, phones and wifi are still down. Government likely doesn't want any info leaking over to the Russians or Chinese about this." Richard felt someone moved past him, and turned to see a tall, female figure covered in silvery armor, leading three others; a short male, a tall female, and another female being carried over the shoulder of the tall one. "Looks like a couple more candidates for your team Henry." He spoke quietly.

Finally, the other tall, muscle bound guy who'd been checked on by the doctor just moments ago, spoke up. "Well... If I remember who you are from the beach, I'd say you worked pretty hard out there. Even still, some of us do the same job for free, and we don't have many shields to hide behind. I'm gonna keep doing what I can to help here. You do what you need to do."

And with that, Richard stepped out.

................................................................................................................................

Richard stood over the body of the man who had been wearing tweed. The suit was quickly dissolving, as was the body, and Sasha had already attempted to take some samples. White Death had something else he wanted to investigate however...

With a wooden stick, debris tossed up from the ocean, he had gently slid the front sides of the man's jacket over, opening it up so he could see the inside pockets of the blazer. Still using the stick, he carefully tried to test the pockets, to see if there were any contents available in them. Eventually, he came across something, two somethings in fact. He gently pressed the stick against the pockets, pushing the contents out before gingerly inspecting to see if there was any of the mold substance on either.

Both looked clean, so Richard decided to pick them both up for further inspection. The first one was a leather bound journal, the inside filled with water and flame damaged pages, but still mostly legible. Old dates were in there, starting from 1908, and continuing to the 1920's. Not surprising, but didn't prove anything.

The other piece, more innocuous than the journal, was a simple piece of paper. Opening it up revealed another date, June 8th 1923. In addition, there was a name: Pierce Smith. That name was also in the journal. The piece of paper was intended as a suit tailoring appointment, made at Heston Tailor's in Boston. Between this and the journal, Richard figured this either proved the man here stole someone's antique suit, or that this man was, indeed, a long way away from home.

He stood up once again, taking a last look at the body. The eyes were still there, staring up at the sky, but the decay had set in quick, and he suspected those wouldn't survive much longer either. Richard gave a wave over to Sasha as he made his way back to the others to share his findings.

Richard turned to look at Sasha, a soft and slight smile hidden under the mask. He was glad not to be alone in wanting to take action in all this. While the hesitation of the others was understandable, especially with all the death that surrounded them, Richard wanted to feel like they were doing something. The Beast was dead, true, but this did not feel at all like a victory.

If felt like the beginning.

"Of course Sasha, happy to make time. What's up?" He asked in a soft, but pleasant tone.

Maxwell gave a nod to Maeve as she returned to both him and Ezekiel, feeling satisfied to know they, and his other employees, were all safe. The safety of the super powered rockstar was also good news, and still surprising that she had attended this fight.

"Yes, Miss Vortex is quite spirited, and has that demean our of refusing to play by the rules others set out. I rather enjoy that. Thank you for making sure she made it out safely Maeve, and for rescuing all of my people as well. I'd say you've certainly earned quite a bit too, on top of my gratitude."

He turned then to Ezekiel, taking into consideration some of what he had added. "Hard to say if she'd want to be an asset, but she most certainly would be. And don't worry yourself about your conduct today. You proved yourself to be... Resourceful. Shame that monster took so much to take down, but I suppose that couldn't be helped. Good work out there Pyromancer, you worked well both alone, and with the other supers, and you've certainly lived up to your name." The Shape chuckled slightly as he looked back out to the beach.

There was a slight, audible sigh under the mask. "I don't like what happened after the battle. Those soldiers in the helicopters, they knew about all this far too quickly. I've heard rumors about some such things as this, but always passed it off as conspiracy theories. Hopefully Wallflower was able to get enough samples..."

With some more nodding of his head in consideration, he looked back to Zeke and Maeve once again. "Interesting idea that after party, by the way, but we ought to be... Careful with that. Now's the time for mourning, whatever business we do today needs to be in consideration of that. There's a lot of trauma and scars that have been created today."

As Sheri proceeded through the inner workings of the Fusion Plant, things became stranger and stranger. The pathways led further down, deeper into the underground, possibly making their way underneath the reactor itself. As doorways opened to new areas, new signs began to appear. Radiation, explosive, and hazardous materials warning signs.

The strangest signs of all, however, were the bio-hazard signs. New structures began to appear across the walls, tubes and pipes filled with steam, liquids (some of strange colors and consistencies), and moved both to and from somewhere. Was there something else going on under the power plant? Some kind of virus perhaps, or chemical weapon development? It was almost impossible to tell, but something seemed very wrong.

Sheri may not have understood Fusion Energy, or the developments Atlas had made to make it work, but it wasn't hard to tell that this did not seem to fit in with it.

Richard stopped abruptly, taken off guard by Sasha's remark. Had he mentioned anything about his work to Sasha? Had he given an indication as to what exactly he did? Was Sasha connected to a gang, or some government agency? It just seemed an odd question to ask. But... Perhaps other plaguing emotions were at play in the new found sense of paranoia he had.

After a quite moment, he responded in a relatively calm, neutral tone. "More, even ignoring the ones from military service. How about you? And why do you ask by the way?" Richard asked in calm, but curious and enquiring tones. He wasn't sure what it was specifically that the Russian wanted to know, he hoped it'd be something easier to discuss.

Jericho paused as The Knight, as they had taken to calling the woman from Soldier Park, walked the two suspicious ones away. They were tired as it was, and had the distinct feeling that attempting any further
Pursuit would only lead to disappointment and probable danger to themself.
So they fell back, and stopped by the group of assembled Supers.

The forms and scents of Alex-Aegis, and quite a few from soldier park, relaxed the shapeshifter for the most part. Though it was Vortex’s voice and then subsequent gaze that wore on J-3. Interestingly enough.
They would have figured they were used to the stares that other beings gave them, the sort of curious disgust or outright distrust.
The fact that Vortex clearly despised them wasn’t lost on J-3, not at all, but it did wear on them in a way they weren’t used to. They cared, now, what people thought
 just a little

They also noticed Cannonade, yay! They looked more alive than when J-3 saw them on the beach.

Oh well. Whatever. Vortex could hate J-3 a little more later. All they wanted to do was go home, lay down, and melt.

So they moved towards Alex, shrinking down and once more taking on the form of ‘Jemma’. Their ink pulsed and moved like molasses, slow and syrupy. Their- her?- body ached. Ached in a way J-3 didn’t really comprehend, not to something that wasn’t used to feeling ‘exhaustion’. To any other super, or medically trained professional, J-3 was showing signs of becoming ‘tapped’.
They ignored it.

Instead they came to a stop in front of Alex, having walked through the middle of the group and thumping their head directly into his shoulder. Ink once again roiled up, and on their shoulders, and the backs of their hands, eyes popped open. Deep blue-black, like the depths of an ocean, irises surrounded four, four-pointed pupils.
They sighed, and simply rested there in silence, ignoring the rest of the world save for watching their back.

Alex was thankful that there was a few people present that also didn’t feel like sticking around. The fact that almost everyone present was remaining visibly calm was surprising. He assumed it was half due to shock and the other half just being used to this kind of madness. How accustomed one could be to giant monsters out of someone’s nightmares was beyond him.

A touch on the shoulder had grabbed his attention for a moment. He glanced at Silver Fang before noticing Jericho wasn’t to far behind her. That took off one of the last few remaining weights on his shoulders. Thank god, the idea that Jericho hadn’t survived had been nagging at the back of his mind for a while. Alex was worried he wouldn’t have had any confirmation if the shifter had survived or not until he was away from the crowds or after he made it home.

He turned his attention back to the group When Henry directed his speech towards him. As much as the man had a point, It really wasn’t what Alex was wanting to hear right now. They were all supers yes, and this was something bigger then all of them. But that didn’t account for the fact that next to nobody hear had ever dealt with an event this harrowing. They weren’t all trained soldiers that could deal with this, and trying to instill a sense of duty now when nobody had a chance to breath could be bad for some people’s mental health in the long run. Alex didn’t respond to that and just shook his head.

Alex’s dampening mood quickly shifted when Akiko popped up next to him inquiring about the food. ” Yep, I was thinking a good home made meal would be good for some of our nerves.” He smiled and crossed his arms absently when Vic seemed interested to tag along if Cannonade could come. He took a second to glance between Vic and the hero in question before shrugging. ” Why the hell not, just means I can cook for more people and I have the space.”

That was about the moment when Jericho came slinking over, slowly morphing into their Jemma form before resting their head on Alex’s shoulder. Damn, they look completely tapped out. Without even thinking he let his helmet dissipate before bringing a hand up to gently pat “Jemma’s” head. He looked down at the tired shapeshifter. ”Ready to go home buddy?” There was only a touch of worry in his voice.

"Sometimes, it feels like an army," Sasha said, staring kindly at Richard. "Sometimes the weight of those deaths makes me feel like I'm being crushed under a mountain. Guilt, sorrow, regret... These are emotions that plague men like you and I."

Sasha placed a hand on Richard's shoulder, a firm but gentle grip. "I killed because I was told. Like you, I spent some time... in service to my country. Many of the men I killed deserved death. But one I know for sure did not. The last person I killed was an innocent." Sasha shook his head, perhaps to cover a tear in his eye, perhaps not. "Since then, I forsook my oath to my country. I gave up everything, and came here. To start a new life. To begin a new way."

Sasha looked deep into Richard's eyes for a long moment. "I know not why you kill Richard. Perhaps you feel you are justified in their deaths because they are dangerous, or perhaps they have killed or hurt others. But I see the same weight crushing you as it does me. You are better than they are, Richard. You are a good man. You don't have to destroy yourself in order to find justice."

Sasha's hand squeezed ever so slightly more before releasing Richard. "Together, Richard, we can find another way. A better way." Sasha smiled softly. "Ah, listen to me, blabbering on. Forgive me if I said too much, friend."

Richard felt his heart sink at Sasha's words. Why was he talking about this? What did Sasha see in Richard that prompted this line of conversation? Memories of some blackened, rocky cavern returned to his mind, glow from fires, and screams of anguish. His heart thudded in rapid succession as he felt the need to draw deeper breaths to meet his body's need for more oxygen.

"Huh, funny." He muttered quietly. "I ended up leaving because of who I didn't kill. Sounds like we've got something in common though." As Sasha apologized, Richard let out a soft, nearly inaudible sigh, but felt the surging flutter of anxiety in this gut. "It's fine Sasha, but ah... This has been has been something of my own beast to slay. I'm not going to tell you I'm any better or worse than anyone else. I'm just doing what I feel needs to be done."

God, please grant me some direction. Some certainty. Some understanding. Am I-

Richard's thought, his internal prayer, was cut short by approaching footsteps on the Beach. He and Sasha both turned to see who approached them.

"Hiya there. You boys mind coming along with me for a... Little chat?" A set of perfect, pristine teeth stared at them from behind a wide, unnaturally giddy smile.

March 12th, 2045, 10:32am: Atlas City, North Carolina, USA

Richard and Sasha both reentered the tent with the other heroes, followed by the sound of a voice familiar to a few in the collection.

"Knock knock knock, it's the KGB. Ve vill need to ask you all some questions." A voice called in, in a poor imitation of a mixed German and Russian accent.

Peter Radovan stepped in behind the Russian and the Canadian, grinning ear to ear, but his eyes were narrowed. That strange, eerie serenity that should not accompany a grin that wide.

"Just kidding folks, just your friendly neighborhood SINS agents. Good work out there today! Gotta say I'm pretty impressed with you all! Even finished up Uncle Sam's job for him! And probably a good thing too, I dunno what else they coulda used on that thing, but it probably would have been nuclear. And between you, me, and the flies on the wall, I actually really like Atlas City in the summer. Good swimming spot, would have really ruined my trips here if I was always going home with radiation burns."

He gazed over all gathered in the room, able to pick out a couple he recognized, some he thought he might recognize, and others he was at this point entirely unfamiliar with.

"So... Anybody got time for a little chat? If it helps make up your mind, I'll get us all some donuts and whatever you want to drink. On me, my treat, and the least I can do for the heroes of Atlas City." The grin had not faded.

#, as written by Nulix
Cannonade sat with their legs hung over a supply crate, their back hunched over and their gloved fingers interlocked. They'd stayed quiet, waiting for the brass to arrive. They'd sent a few texts to ensure their legal team was ready for whatever was next. Of course, they had just saved Atlas City, so how bad could whoever walked through that tent next be?

A dark-haired, suited man entered- middle-aged, smiling, clean but somehow dirty at the same time. "Hero of Atlas City," Cannonade corrected, launching them-self off the crate and stepping forward. They reached their battle-worn glove out for a handshake. "I killed the beast. And afterwards I was saved by the super woman with wings," Cannonade turned to Jemma resting on Alex's shoulders and gave her a small smile. They'd not seen the shapeshifter change forms, only notice them once they'd appeared at Alex's side. "The rest here protected the city as best they could."
