In The Forest

In The Forest

There are a lot of people living in the forest. But most of them aren't even people! Come find out what they really are...and if the humans can find a way to befriend them.

1,286 readers have visited In The Forest since Crystal Flamedance created it.

Introduction

This forest has long been inhabited by magical creatures. Unicorns run around freely, dragons attack on a whim, and elves and magisprits live alongside them, with the humans always nearby. Here are the generalistics for each.

Elves-
Elves are naturally more physically appealing than humans, and as appealing as Magisprits. They can be either male or female, and live withing the forest without making changes to it if possible. The believe firmly in the balance of nature, and it is their duty to make sure that everything in nature lives in harmony with each other. They ensure that the predators eat the prey, and not the other way around. They help the seasons move along at the rate they're supposed to. Their control over magic isn't the strongest, but their existence alone keeps everything in balance. They The elves are ruled by a monarchy, with their king and queen making decisions. This ruling pair is just and fair, though. Elves can be found anywhere in the woods that has been untouched by man. The elves are usually found on their own, or with their mate, or their family. Their voices tend to be clear and sweet. Elves meditate instead of sleep, and it is a lot easier to break an elves "rest" meditation than wake a human. The elves speak both the language of magisprits and of elves, and only a few understand humans. Elves value life, and so they will eat little meat; usually only eggs that will not hatch or animals that have died of old age.

Humans-
Humans tend to overlook nature easily. They can be male or female. They will change the forest at will to suit themselves. They are most proud of their studies to understand the world, and their ability to change it. They do not understand the balance the elves keep, and believe both them and the magisprits to be savage. They cannot learn magic, but are strong fighters. They are naturally a little bigger than the leves on average, but not overwheight. Most of it is muscle. they also tend to be a little taller than elves (usually only a few inches). They are split into groups, with the largest being ruled by a king and queen. This ruling pair is trying to rule kindly, but they tend to have more hypothetical answers that don't work as well as they hope. One of the two smaller groups rules itself with democracy, with every individual making themselves heard. The last group runs itself by what will help them survive the most. If that means killing others or stealing to survive, then so be it. Humans live wherever they want in large groups, changing the area they live in. Compared to the other races, their voices are rough and hoarse. Humans require sleep. Humans speak their own language. Will hunt animals for meat, and gather other foods.

Magisprits-
Magisprits are as beautiful as the elves. They can only be female. Because there are no male magisprits, they tend to be scantily clad, and react with too much excitement when one comes to them. There are several types of magisprit-ice, water, plant, fire, earth, metal, sand, sun, shadow, and wind. Their hair and eye color reflects their element (ice-teal,blue-green; water-blues: plant-greens; fire-red, orange; metal-gray; sand-yellow, light orange; sun-blond, gold; shadow-black, purple; wind-light blues, light greens). Their control of magic is instinctual, learned at birth. What they can control with magic depends on what type of magisprit they are, and some will overlap (water-ice; water-plant; earth-metal, etc.). They are as tall as humans, though they are so much smaller they look almost like they've been starved. Each group of magiaprit controls the nature of their element, helping them to stay the way they are. If all of any group of magisprit dies, the element they control becomes wild and unnatural, and a danger to the world. Each type of magisprit is ruled by the oldest of their group; called the Mother Magisprit. The mothers of the groups speak to each other to regulate their rules. Each type of magisprit lives in an area of their element (water-largest lake in the forest; ice-mountaintops; plant-near oldest trees; fire-near hot springs; earth-on the slopes of the mountains; metal-within one of the mountains; sand-clearing with sinking sand; light-treetops of the largest grouping of young trees; shadow-under the light magisprits, below the thickest grouping of young trees; wind-between the earth and ice on the mountains). They all live in groups with their own type of magisprit. Their voices remind other of their element (water magisprit voices will sound like running water; wind magisprits will sound like the blowing wind; ice magisprits will sound like ice being chipped). Magisprits can either sleep or meditate, depending on what is more beneficial. Magisprits share a language, though the sounds and accents are different depending on the type. A good portion speak the elves language, but only the mother magisprit understands the human's language. Magisprits value any creature of their element as sacred, and so they are vegetarians. All magisprit names are something of their element (water-River, Ocean, Sea, Wave; earth-Rock, Dirt, Mountain, Valley; sun-Light, Color, Ray; etc.).

The humans have been invading the forest, claiming more land for their own, and have recently discovered the elves and the magisprits. The elves and magisprits now have to fend for themselves, trying to talk the humans into leaving their homes alone. If that doesn't work, it often turned into a fight. The magisprits will hide within their elements, and attack from where they can't be seen. The elves attack outright, usually winning only by their knowledge ot the forest. This struggle has only been going on for a few years, but it already has the blood of every race boiling.

Now war seems to have broken out. But how will it end? Will the elves and magsiprits be able to live peacefully in their forest, or will humans change and inhabit the forest?

I stood on the rock resting in the middle of the lake, watching the younger magisprits. I was also keeping an eye out for any humans to attack or elves to report an attack. Most of the magisprits, as usual, were being very carefree. A group had even started singing about our water. The sound was more like waves upon the sand than voices. I listened to hear if any other types of magisprits were singing. I heard leaves blowing in the wind...plant magisprits singing...and the almost inaudible sound of sun magisprits singing. Everything seemed to be peaceful, despite the fact that we seemed to be in war. I looked up as another group started dancing, pulling the water around themselves to make colors bounce off the water from the sun, making slight rainbows. My magisprits would sing if death was upon them...and so would I, if I did not have to keep watch over them.

I looked up, and saw, barely, a single wind magisprit, blowing over to make sure no one here was being attacked. She danced as she moved, creating a light breeze. Then she flew away, back to the rest of her magisprits. As mother of the water magisprits, it was my job to protet the younger ones. Though sometimes I wished I could join them. That hadn't been a problem before humans started moving through the forest, but now that they had been reported to attack, I had to keep watch. My own singing and dancing would have to wait.

Empkin's delicate fingers softly caresses over the wooden flute. Slowly, she brought it up to her lips. She started with gentle breath. A long, low hoot softly echoed through the air. The sound wavered gracefully. All forest sounds seemed to stop, the rustling of the bushes paused, and the animal's footsteps ceased. Her slender fingers began to dance across the carved wood, varying different notes and filling the air with beautiful, haunting music. Empkin's eyes closed, she let the music take over her. She felt herself begin to dance around the clearing, spinning gracefully and smoothly. She twirled and sank to her knees, the music still playing. She hardly felt the breath flowing in and out of her lungs, all she felt was the music, her spirit left her body, flowing into the gentle notes and flying into the air around her. Then, a rustle interrupted her song. her eyes opened, her music ceased with one last, gorgeous echo. Slowly, her arms descended, placing the flute back into a pocket-like fold in her dress. Her hand hung by the stone that hung on her thin belt. Her eyes scanned the bushes warily.
"Who goes there?" She asked quietly, clutching the folds of her skirt. Then she heard more, and the harsh, rough voices of humans. Her nostrils flared, angry.
"The only species ignorant enough to interrupt an elf's song," She muttered. Once again, she lifted the flute to her mouth, this time, the tune sounded angry and dangerous. [i]A storm song[i/], she decided as she played once more, slowly getting lost in the song again.

I felt the forest react to the sound of a flute. One of the elves, singing peace to the forest. The tone of the magisprits song changed, flowing with the flute. I smiled, reisisting the urge to jump in myself. After all, I still had to keep an eye out for humans. Though, if there were any men...that urge was a lot harder to resist. I heard the tune of the flute stop, then change, become angrier. What the elves called their Storm Song. Which meant that some sort of danger was probably approaching the elf. I looked around my magisprits. They had all come to the same conclusion, and tensed themselves, ready to hide or fight if it came our way. Of course; humans would ruin this peace and quiet that the rest of us enjoyed so much!

"Stay calm," I told my magisprits, keeping my voice steady. "The humans might not come this way and, even if they do, they're probably men. What can men do against our whims?" I grinned as I recieved an answer from one of the younger ones: "Nothing." I nodded. "Good, just remember that, despite their strange physical strength, they can do nothing to harm innocent women that so pine for men." I looked in the direction of the sound of the angry flute.

I was sent on this scouting mission a few days ago, and was supposed to look around this forest for any life. I explored the forest a bit, making occasional notes of important or intriguing things. Why I was sent out here alone baffled me, since I heard rumors of people dying out here. As I explored, I suddenly noticed the melodious tune of a flute. I snuck closer to the source of a sound, realizing it was an Elf. "Wow." I quietly whispered to myself. I wasn't sure if she had noticed me or not, but the tune suddenly turned angry. I quickly backed away and ran quietly, until I came across a lake. Interesting. I glanced around, and noticed a figure..no..multiple figures standing near it, all female. I made a mental note of that and carefully snuck closer, doing my best to stay out of sight. I accidentally stepped on a branch, which made a loud *SNAP* noise. I quickly turned and ran, hoping none of them had noticed I was there.

After running for a bit, I stopped, sat down and pulled out my journal, then wrote a few things, like where I had found the lake, other landmarks I had found, plus the Elf and the females all standing by the lake. I put my journal away and got up, then looked around. I thought I heard someone approaching, so I grabbed my bow and an arrow, then pulled it to full draw horizontally and aimed it around, looking for any signs of movement.

The human hadn't realized that I had seen him. As expected, a man. He drew and prepared his bow. I grinned to myself. Would he seriously attack someone like me? All the magisprits had disappeared into the water as I left; probably hiding instead of keeping a look out. I steppe dout of the trees, making myself visible to the man. I was confident he wouldn't even try to harm me. I stepped forward, speaking in my own language, that I knew he was incapable of speaking, let alone understanding. "You trespassed." The human would, of course, be reminded of a river flow; that was the nature of my voice, and not something I could control. But it usually worked to my advantage.

One of the females I had seen at the lake had come out of the trees and approached me. I put my bow away and my arrow back into the quiver, and she tried to speak to me. I didn't understand a word she said, but her words kind of sounded like a river flowing. "What did you say?" I asked, unaware if she understood me or not. Behind my back, I drew my knife, just in case she tried to attack me. After all, I had no idea what she was, and much less what her intentions were, and even less of what she said! I didn't know if she was trying to make friends with me, was threatening me, or what she was saying, but I knew that if she tried to attack me, I probably wouldn't have the upper hand, so I had to be prepared.

I saw his hand go behind his back. He didn't trust me. How sad. I smiled, and held a hand out to him, speaking in my own language again. "You don't plan to attack, do you? We don't mean any harm...just a little fun. We don't have men among our group, as I'm sure you saw." These humans made no effort to understand our language, though I had managed to learn his. I knew he didn't understand, and this was my small form of punishment; confusing him with my language. He should have taken the timw to learn mine.

Though the game got old fast. I spoke in his language, though I couldn't remove the feel of a river flow from my voice. "I only said that you trespassed on water magisprit territory; the lake."

She started to talk to me again, and I had no idea what she was saying. She could have been threatening me or warning me a second time, but I wasn't sure, so I remained in my current stance. I was confused, so I didn't strike. Then, she spoke my language. Finally, I could understand what she was saying! "Oh. Sorry about that." I said, putting my knife back into its sheath. "I didn't mean to trespass. I wasn't even aware it was your territory." I reasoned, hoping she didn't suddenly decide to attack me. "Anyway, my name is Maxwell. Who are you?" I asked, trying to get some information out of her.

He had ignored my hand. How rude. I took it back, and held it against my throat. "My name is Current; I am the Water Magisprit Mother, and so it was my job to tell you." His hand released whatever weapon he was hiding. Good; he wouldn't attack me. I took a small step forward. "You'll have to excuse me...we have no men..." I trailed off, glancing around. Were there any magisprits of another kind nearby? It wasn't right that only one of us got a human...or any man at all, really...

Water Magisprit Mother? So that's what she was. I was wondering about that. "Interesting." I said, taking out my notepad and jotting some things down. She took a step forward, and mentioned they don't have men. I took a step back and put my journal away out of natural reaction, but then started contemplating it. She was looking around, almost as if making sure nobody was around, and she mentioned they had no men...and then it donned on me. She must have been attracted to me. "What are you getting at?" I asked, testing my theorey. If she responded the way I thought she would, I would get out of here. I had just barely met her, and if she was attracted to me in that way...well, I sure wasn't ready for it. I wasn't sure if she would appreciate me acting in a negative way, so I took another step back, and accidentally backed into a tree.

"What am I getting at?" The only human clueless about this...the only man..interesting. "We have no men; and if you don't want anything to do with us...well..." I sighed. "We don't get much fun...so we take what we can get when it comes close enough. You must understand, it's never a personal thing; it's just a natural one. A man stepped into our territory, and we will take that chance. It would be the same if any other man came to our territory." Except, of course, other men would never have hesitated, or been as confused as this one. And they would have stayed to watch our dancing, and listen to our singing, especially combined with the elf's flute. "We haven't had a clueless man yet..." I mumbled in my own fluid language.

I barely faked a smile as she talked. Just as I had assumed, she was attracted to me. She said it was a natural thing and not personal, and I could understand that, but I wasn't ready for it, nor did I want it. Especially with someone I had barely known for five minutes! I started to think of ways to escape, and came up with a good idea. As she talked, I secretly reached a hand into one of my belt pockets and produced a few smoke pellets. As she finished with her last sentence, I raised my arm and threw them down, which made a thick cloud of smoke. I then proceeded to run away, but something stopped me from doing so. Nothing mental, but actually physical, like a wall. Great. I thought to myself. The smoke's going to clear and she's going to see me, and probably haul me back to her territory or something. I slowly turned back around as the smoke cleared. "Heh heh...That didn't go as planned." I said sheepishly, scratching the back of my head, half-heartedly smiling.

I turned my expression to a glare. "Perhaps you don't understand. We aren't giving you a choice." I had guessed, the instant smoke had suddenly appeared, that he would try to run. I had used my water to block him. I created my little bubble of water, the one power that I was truly fond of, and had it surrouding just him. "You tried to escape, without giving good reason. You trespassed, and refused to accept any form of kindness to overlook punishment. Have you anything to say that might get you out of trouble? And don't scream; human ears aren't sharp enough to hear you through the water." He was afraid of us? Afraid of allowing us to have our fun? Interesting...this human would probably be more fun to the others; he had already irritated me to no end. "Idiot," I mumbled in my language.

I facepalmed. How could I have been caught so easily? I looked back up at her and said, "Yes, I do have something to say. I have other businesses to tend to, and don't have time for this. Sorry about not telling you earlier, but I didn't know if you were going to attack me. And I apologise for the trespassing and about anything else, but I really have to go now." I really did. I had to report back to base to tell them my findings, then return to the forest to scout some more. She had a strange look in her eyes. I drew my knife and stood ready in case she tried to attack. "What are you going to do to me?" I asked, backing against the wall. I hoped she wouldn't say what I thought she would.

"...What other business? You should have said so from the start, if it was so important. It would have prevented a mess like this from happening in the first place," I scolded. "But know that if you ever trespass again, and do not give a reason to be away, you will not get away. But...before I do release you..." I paused, thinking. "What business is it that you have? Surely there are others where you need to go..." He was afraid of me. Foolish. My strength was nothing compared to the weakest human. My magic, though, could easily overpower them. I had all day to sit and wait for an answer.

I knew there was no way around it, so I answered her. "OK, I'll give a reason if I trespass next time, which I probably won't. And about what I have to do: I need to head back to my base and report to my commander what I found in the forest. I'm not supposed to tell you that, and that's why I was keeping it a secret. Will you please let me go now?" I asked, hoping that I would be released. My commander was expecting me to return soon, and it wouldn't be good for me if I returned late. I slowly returned my knife to my sheath, since she showed no sign that she was about to attack. Just in case she changed her mind or something, I had a smoke pellet ready in my other hand.

I sighed. Reporting what he had seen? "...I'm not sure that I can allow that. You humans are invading our forest, changing everything about it. If this report allows your plans to move forward, then I'm afraid I can't let you go." I shook my head. "And," I added in my language, "I'm afraid I'm going to have to let the girls have their fun." I grinned, and shrunk the bubble a bit, so he couldn't move around so much. "You can blame the humans for destroying parts of our forest, and for upsetting nature!" I told him, angrily, though I forgot to translate it to his language.

A look of shock and terror flashed across my face. I hadn't understood what she had said, but I knew it wasn't good, and it probably had something to do with something against my will. That was the last thing I wanted. Speaking of last things, she said her last sentence in her language, so I didn't understand. The bubble started shrinking, which only frightened me more, until it stopped shrinking. Through deduction, I figured that she was going to let some girls in here or bring me to them, and they would force me to do something against my will, or just mess with me. I almost drew my knife, but told myself that I shouldn't harm them. What would my commander say if he heard I had injured a female? And on purpose? I furiously began thinking of ways to escape, but came up with none. Things weren't looking so great for me. I would have to resist them the best I could without injuring them or myself.

I wondered what to do next. I couldn't just let him go...and the girls would have fun with this one...and, as I recalled, the human men did not allow their men to attack a female. And if he only knew how easily we bruise... I stepped forward, into the bubble, at the same time expanding it to allow much more room. "I don't think you understand." I went back to speaking in his language. "What is there that you can possibly do to escape? We reuise much too easily; much easier than your human women. It barely takes a touch. But you are afraid. Why? Other men would have no objections..." I tilted my head a little, allowing confusion to cross my features. "And most have had fun, too..." I added, in my language again. He didn't need to understand everything that I was saying, anyway.

As she expanded the bubble, I backed away from her. "Well, I'm not other men." I responded, a little angry. "I'm me, and that's that. And besides, I don't even want what you're planning on doing to me. Is that a good enough explanation?" I asked, attempting to stall her. She mentioned how easily they bruised. Barely a touch? This would mean I would have to escape, or I would be stuck in a room full of women and no way to fight back unless I wanted to get fired, or worse. I would need to find a way out. The only way I could think was to throw my smoke pellets, and cut a hole in the wall, but there was no telling how long it would take for her to fill the gap. I would need to buy more time than the brief period that my smoke pellets gave. I could try continually throwing smoke pellets, but would I be able to cut through the wall before she re-sealed it? Probably not. I continued thinking, now having backed against the wall again. I was afraid, but I could try threats. I drew my knife and held it towards her, then took a step forward. "Let me go." I said in an angry tone. "I'm not afraid to use this, whether I get fired or otherwise." I really was afraid to use it, but she didn't need to know that.

Not other men... "I understand that. But the...difference...is so...confusing..." How could I put it so he would understand? I hadn't completely learned every word in his language; just what I needed to get what I wanted. "I suppose I could let you go...but you'll have to...promise...that your report will not be used to ruin out home. Allowing you to ruin this forest would be as disgarceful to me as harming a woman would be to you. You cannot escape; the water is too fluid for you to damage; it'll just form around whatever you try to break it with, so the only option you have is to promise. I don't want any danger befalling my home, and that of the other magisprits, and the elves." "And for our peace," I added, again in my own language.

"Oh." I said, putting my knife away. "Alright, I promise that my report won't be used to ruin your home. I'll just say that we can't destroy the forest for some bizarre reason, and maybe he'll believe me." I added. She just wanted to protect her home. That was understandable. "If he doesn't listen to me, then there's nothing I can do about it." I said, letting her know the direct truth. There was honestly nothing I could do against my commander, unless I were to strike up a mutiny, but that would probably mean death on my part. She said something else in her language, but I didn't bother with that. She said she also wanted to protect the other magisprits and the elves.

"...Well...if you really will try...but if it doesn't work, it will still have been my fault, and I will hold it against you. When I finish with you, you'll wish you had just let the girls had their fun!" I said, glaring. This was the first one to try so hard to keep away from us. I allowed the water to fall into the ground, and sent it back to my lake, where it belonged. "But I had better not see you near the lake again, especially if you're there to destroy the forest!"

Finally, she was letting me go! "Ok." I said. "I won't return to your lake unless I have good reason to, like if my commander wishes to speak with you. Then I would have to return." I said, running off. "Bye!"

After getting a little ways away, I stopped to write down more things for my report. After writing down most of what happened, I continued on my way, and hoped to myself that I would be able to reason with my captain, especially since I was going to be late.

He ran away as fast as was possible for him. Hopefully he didn't get lost. Or run into other magisprits. That would be interesting. And, as promised, I had let him go. But I had no say in the matter if another magisprit caught him. I turned and walked back to the lake, leisurely. It had proved to be an interesting experience. No one had turned away from us before...but then, none of them believed that whatever they were doing was important enough to just walk away. I started sining quietly as I walked, knowing that human ears would never have a chance of hearing, or even understanding, the words. Then I paused and looked up, whispering, "And so it begins...the war that has never been necessary...stupid humans." Only another magisprit or an elf with knowledge of my language would have understood me.

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

not to be mean...but it probably wouldn't have died if smiley or i had something to reply to...i might just have to revive this one...later

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

I abondoned because this was dead and I was cleaning out my RP's.

I'll pick it back up if it gets active.

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

i think revival would be best... just like what happened with outcast... i only posted once before falling out of play.... seems like kawaii abandoned nillis and smiley... well, he stopped playing posi and negi in outcast and it seems like hes done the same here... seems like my one active rp has come to a stop.. i dont know if im just bad at making rps or if people don't really like the plots or what... idk but yeah i think this could be revived...

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

umm...this rp is starting to look kinda dead... *pokes with stick* ...yeah...it's either dead or dying...i might try to revive this one some time...though it didn't have nearly as many posts as i thought i could get with this one...

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

yeah, i know...and i don't know what's going on with kawaii maria...told me she was going on vacation...but smiley says she told him there wasn't any way to reply to posts...but i understand; it's hard to think up replies sometimes, really

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

yeah, i feel kinda bad about posting once and then stopping, but there wasn't really anything to do, if you know what I means.

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

oh...sorry...didn't pay much attention to the OOC :P umm...i think...considering everyone in the forest knows each other...you could drop by the lake for a visit...or manage to get clumsy and come to me for healing, because that is what I do...sorry, i don't have many ideas for you...

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

I need some help, I haven't gotten into this too much yet, so sometimes I play myself out of the story. Does anyone have ideas on how Empkin could get back into the plot??? Thanks, and I'm really sorry!

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

the first one up...? oh, the first of the two to wake up? well, i think smiley might actually be waiting for you..that, or he hasn't been able to post yet

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

lol okay. That works :D

man I reallt don't want to be the first one up XD

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

...who said elves don't mate much? elves that other people make may not mate much, but these are my elves...though they tend to stick to their own race...the only reason they really can mate so much and not outnumber the humans is that elves are reckless in battle, and get themselves killed often that way...in my mind, anyway

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

Elves don't really mate much either. Humans will still win over time I think. XD but that's just my opinion. :D

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

basically, the original magisprits were born directly from their element...when one dies, another magisprit puts them back in their element, and they are kinda "robron"...though they have no memories from before they died...so basically...i might have to allow half magisprits for our race to grow in numbers at all, cuz that works, too...but they can't be nearly as powerful as the full-magisprits...but even if there aren't enough magisprits, the elves would be killing plenty, too, and that does reduce human numbers, too

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

ahahhahahahahahahaha yeah I say good luck to that XD I doubt there's enough Magispirits, From what i gather we are the least populace of the races.

Speaking of which how are we born anyways?

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

that depends on how many of the men we do grab; if we grab enough, how can there be any more human generations?

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

Yeah this is true. Still after a long enough time. maybe a few hundred years, I'd give it 5 generations tops XD

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

but you forget that magisprits appear very beautiful to humans; that could be used against them...or maybe be used to capture them. i would imagine each magisprit has some way to hold them captive, and with the men captured, what else is there to do? it's some time in the past, so women did not fight them...well, human women...still, it wouldn't take much in that way

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

War...Humans Vs Magis spirits...It would be bloody but humans would win in the long run I think. Be interesting to see

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

then we use the forests to prepare for war against the humans! ...not really, a good portion of the characters prefer peace...that just means they hide from humans in the forest, and if they ever get a look at one of our homes, then we attack...eh, it still needs working on...and it does look like something's happened to his computer again...probably did break down...

Re: [OOC] In The Forest

XD his comp died AGAIN probably XD

and well yeah...sure...they can save the forests and such...but what then.... They would be nothing but preserves XD
