Introduction
Mass Effect. Fear.
(You may want to listen to Adam Freelandβs Mind Killer while you read this. This was written to the nearly 11 minute long mix from area 5 of REZ called Fear if you want to get the true feeling of it. Youtube it and make sure itβs something like 10 minutes and 55 seconds, thereβs another mix of it out there that is also from a REZ soundtrack CD called βGamersβ Guide To REZ,β thatβs not it. Youtube)
Setting.
The battle of the citadel was won. Sovereign, and their puppet, Saren Arterius, have been destroyed. The Heretics have retreated. The tank-bred Krogan soldiers have been eliminated along with the cure for the genophage. The council was saved. One more thing. Shepard is dead. Cerberus is hard at work tinkering at what remains of Shepard, still trying to figure out whatβs flesh and what is hardsuit. Project Lazarus has a long way to go. Disjointed branches of Cerberus move in dark corners of the galaxy, conducting devious experiments. The healing process has finally begun for the Citadel. The Rachni begin to rebuild in secrecy, preparing for the day they can right the wrongs of their mothersβ soured songs. Clan Urdnot moves to unite Tuchanka. The Quarian migrant fleet rings with hushed speculation over a possible move to retake the homeworld. Rael Zorah begins taking risks using data brought home by his daughter and the debris she now sends him. Every day, more people are hurt for the sins of their kin, be it Batarian attacks on Humans, Krogan attacks on Turians, or general conflict with the Geth. Reports of human colonists going missing have been waxing. Worse still, Silently drifting closer to home, is a malevolent power mentioned in myth. Their servants are already here, hiding beyond the Omega 4 relay and moving among us, wearing our faces and hiding behind known threats. Monsters are coming to harvest us all and the only one who understands, the only one who can DO anything about it is dead. Only SHEPARD faced the servants, only SHEPARD opposed the monsters, only SHEPARD toppled a god. Why? Because only Shepard heard the Protheansβ cries.
But wait! Hold the phone! Au contraire!
Itβs true that Shepard is the only one who came in contact with the beacon, but its psychic message was broadcast throughout the galaxy. Thousands of seemingly completely random people experienced the very images and emotions experienced by commander Shepard. Based on reported hallucinations, the spread of the signal has been mapped and clocked as travelling at speeds of 23,298,611,111.111c without the use of any sort of mass accelerator; exactly how is unknown. In the span of ninety earth days, the Prothean distress broadcast had covered the entire galaxy. Of the thousands of people who experienced it, very few imagined it may be more than a trick of the mind. A few clever souls tied the experience back to doomsday myths of their people, and their horsemen of the apocalypse. These eccentrics, these believers, these fearful ones now scramble to prepare for war with forces unknown.
Where you come in.
We, the Fearful, do take upon our backs the burden of understanding
And carry it from here to the end;
Resigning ourselves to the compulsion to fight,
Not from a sense of duty
But the struggle against the sensation of helplessness.
And although we have not met, and though we might not yet,
In time we will be close as blood.
So take up your spear in hand
And in the other take mine
And together we will march towards that unknown destination,
The beating heart of Fear.

Whether or not you heard the beacon, whether or not you believe the Reapers are coming, a revolution is happening around you. Where do you stand?

This Roleplay is designed to give you maximum freedom within a timeline that portrays the Mass Effect Milky Way as we most prominently know and love. Too many roleplays have tried the βAfter Shepard changed everythingβ approach. Make your character(s) based on the following sheet. There are no concrete rules on what you can be. You can fight for the galaxyβs survival, your race, your beliefs, your agenda, your revenge, it doesnβt matter. The beacon pulse is just an excuse to let select others know about the reapers and try to fill commander Shepardβs shoes.
If you have a well-funded organization behind you, that trusts you enough to support a wild-goose-chase like Shepardβs, it will afford you a ship and freedom. Not to say itβs the only way. You could also be backed because you have your own βSarenβ to hunt.
Godspeed, good hunting, may your enemies be strong enough to keep you sharp, a prayer for the wicked, and keelah seβlai.

NOTE: BEFORE I GET ANY MORE OF THESE CHARACTERS - Guys, seriously, your characters are repeatdedly looking like the Macho-Man space-marine silent-protagonist archetype that overpopulates the futuristic FPS genre. No more of that. Look at the girls! ...or at the moment, the one girl's posted prfile. It doesn't center on where her training came from or what she can blow up, or who she defeated, or WHAT SHE HAS ACCOMPLISHED. Your characcter can be ripped, and toned, and have noteworthy training, but no more of this ridiculous expression of their gamer statistics and how they are super strong and fast and can use any weapon. This is a Roleplay. The combat situations aren't affected by your statistics, only your creativity. The stronger your character is, the shorter the combat segments are. Kaboom, they're dead, I win. I've had to send at least 6 "please rework your character" PMs at this point. we're all just characters in the Mass Effect times. not necessarily super-soldiers. Also We already have a ton of stealth characters, including a ninja or two. PM me about making an original stealth class if you want one.
Update & notes - All updates will be underlined within the body of the form or written here if they are miscellaneous.
- Don't forget to put down a description of your Loyalty ability and a description of your loyalty outfit. The loyalty outfit will correspond with crew colors, so captain's choice.
To get a better emotional sense, try to post song & artist names that inspired you posts/character(s). You could also post whatever you think would fit it more.
Name:
Most races have a Given name and a Family name. Krogan have Clan name and Adopted name. Hanar have Face name and Soul name. Volus have Given name and Clan name. Quarians (I bet you know this one by now) have Given name, Family name, particle, and Vessel name. Synthetics have no name with the exception of Reapers who have their own names (I.E. Nazara). AI networks occupying a single platform will temporarily adopt a metaphorical name much like a Hanar soul name, when working closely with organics who are incapable at communicating at the speed of light, such as Legion or Sovereign. VI platforms, such as power loaders and other utility mechs have model numbers, network numbers, and registration/serial numbers. Organics would most likely refer to them by their Network number. Donβt forget to list code-names and Alias.
Race:
I wonβt name βem. You should know them. Just go for it. Employ any sentient race you want, just please try to make them realistic to each culture. If you want to make a Reaper character, be sure to operate through an avatar, like Harbingerβs power over the collectors. It might be fun to have some Reaper adversaries and indoctrination could bring us some cool drama. Since Sovereign was supposed to be the only vanguard Reaper in the Milky Way, we donβt want too many reapers making personal appearances without a proxy. Oh, and please no Yahg characters, they are quarantined. Oh, and Raloi. Not enough data. Beware of racial combat limitations. Thereβs a reason you donβt see all races in combat. Now if you excuse me, Blasto is on.
Gender:
Most races have some level of sexual dimorphism. Asari, Rachni, Collectors & Hanar are unisex. In speech, Asari & Rachni are referred to in the feminine. Sex is not applicable to Synthetics. Synthetic voices (such as Hanar vocalizers, public service Vis, and mechs) can sound more masculine or feminine.
Age:
How long your character has been alive, active, undead, conscious, what have you. Earth years is fine, most garden worlds have comparable year lengths. You should already know the approximate life-span for each race. Reapersβ ages are indeterminate.
Appearance:
Pics are nice, especially when you make βem yourself. Non required. Iβll draw OCs if you want. Iβd really love to try a group pic when we get enough characters and things.
Affiliation:
Organization(s) your character associates with. Cerberus, Aliance, Blood-pack, Council, Team Rocket, Decepticons, OZ, Planeteers, Rebel Scum, Horde, etc.
Rank/Position:
Rank within organization. Asari Matriarch, Krogan Warlord, C-sec Detective, Batarian Terrorist Leader, STG Commando, whatever. Who do you answer to? Who calls the shots and decides where you go? If you want some serious freedom, go with spectre, or justicar, or something with license to blow shit up. Keep in mind, regardless of the freedoms you have in your own culture, you will likely not have the same rights in others. Remember, if you are high enough rank, you need to assemble your own crew. If your captain is out of commission and you become the ranking officer, leaders & vessel owners reserve the right to assign their own chain of command, regardless of previous official rank. Take care to assign crew functions, such as medical officers, science officers, engineering officers, helmsmen, yeomen, navigators, gunnery officers, psychiatric councilors, village bicycle, maintenance & service (confectionary/janitorial) crew, equipment specialists, first officers, etc. For vessel owners, I will be posting ship specs and suggestions.
Class:
You can get inventive if you want. If you make up a class, tell us its focus and its special ability. If youβve come out with a 3,000 year old Rachni Death-knight, youβve done something wrong. There are plenty of commonly known classes for whatever race you selected out there, if youβre feeling conservative, or just lazy. For example, Asari are often things like, Matriarchs, Huntresses, Justicars, & Commandos. βLevel 87 Krogan Red-Mage!β No! Shut up! D:< βDrell Sith apprentice?β *sigh*
Spoken Languages:
Languages your character can communicate in and/or understand. If not both, note which. If you can speak it, odds are you can understand it as well, but not necessarily the other way around. In this RP, the omnitoolβs translator is limited to pre-programmed vocal-aural languages and is only about as effective as a fancy modern online translator. This is to say it occasionally stumbles over grammar and such. Remember, GSTL (Galactic Standard Trade Language) is there for you, use it or have another means. Sign Language, Binary, Brail, Morse-Code, Bar-Code, Semaphore, Spanish, whatever. Some Terminus-based Batarian colonies have boycotted GSTL and will only speak in their mother-tongue. Other cultures have very intricate forms of communication that the standard, unmodified omnitool would not pick up on. Things like pheromones, body language, telepathy, bioluminescence, inflection/tonal intricacies, melody, and other things. A little off topic, but if left unfiltered through a translator, the Prophetsβ sermons (from Halo) sound like Gregorian chanting. I think this may be a bit like how the Rachni hear their own words. How Fucking Cool Is THAT? List languages as the number of common or uncommon dialects of a race (I.E. 4 prevalent Asari languages).
Weapons:
Now weβre getting somewhere, right? I expect one or twoish weapons plus one heavy weapon (go ahead, make βem up), but Iβm flexible. Everybodyβs gonnaβ list the Carnifex and the Widow, right? Itβs fine, no penalty for being uncreative. I want the Widow, myself, but it can only be wielded by the sturdier races & modified ones. I think the Phalanx is kicking more ass than the Carnifex, right now. Knives and swords and such are cool if your character can for some reason show up at a shootout with βem anβ come out with the same number of holes. Also a good place to take inventory of your utility belt. You know, grappling-hook, smoke-bombs, batarangs, rocket boots.
Known Tech Talents:
Tech talents your character will demonstrate or has demonstrated. Got an idea for a new tech power? Go for it!
Known Biotic Abilities:
Biotic Abilities your character will demonstrate or has demonstrated. You come up with something cool, but not godly unbeatable, Iβll be all for it. Synthetics are incompatible. Only biotic focused classes are powerful enough for the big stuff. For example letβs only see someone who is as trained or gifted as a Matriarch use things like telepathic thought-sharing.
Bio:
Motives, origin, and that. Avoid things like last survivor of Krypton or bitten by a radio-active Thresher-Maw, out to avenge the death of pet turtle. Habits, hobbies, vices, interests, online-dating profile all go here. Be sure to mention if you know someone who heard the Protheansβ call. Non-leader characters will have recruitment & loyalty mission(s) that make good opportunities for character development. Leader characters, of course, donβt have either, but they are free to fit autocentric missions into their itinerary. For dramaβs sake, ask many questions of other characters, even if you might know the answer. I also support inter-player character romances. Donβt be afraid to make up names of artists your characters like or something. You can base them on existing artists to give us a feeling. Little details about your vision are useful. It was the little things that made some of the characters very sexy. For instance, every male player with a male Shepard went for Tali because of her cute accent and the adorable girl-next-door learning to soldier-up way about her. Every player with a Female Shepard went for Garrus for his plagued cowboy nature and because, wellβ¦ he looks great in sunglasses and black leather dress-shoes.

Two human men and a Salarian Male were standing at the end of the line to enter Afterlife, One of the Humans was blond, and had a good amount of scars on his face, and was wearing a yellow suit, much more expensive then the normal Omega resident would wear out. The other Human had grey hair, though he didn't seem very old. He was pale white and somewhat short, wearing a black suit, with a yellow tie. The Salarian was dark skinned, and seemed fairly young-as far as Salarians went anyway- and again, had matching yellow accessories to his black clothing.
Ulia wasn't stupid, but it was not exactly easy to hide firearms in a dancers uniform, nor were they normally permitted in Afterlife anyway unless you were working directly for Aria. She did however, have her Omni-Tools, and could zap anyone who gave her any trouble if she really needed to. She was seemingly too enamored with the view however, to notice the men from the line casually walking up behind her.

All in all, the package thought for two, maybe 3 seconds. Right before it stood up.
it stood an average Quarian height. It's head, or what passed as one unfurled last of all the limbs from the huddled position it had maintained for the last ten hours. Once standing fully erect, a bright light shot from where the face might have been. Four words escaped from unseen lips, in 3 different languages.

A bout of rare anxiousness fell over Curator as he heard the geth speak in three languages, that meant the geth was too intelligent to be heretic or the geth would have only spoken in binary
Holding back the want to speak in binary, which would sound like gurgles from Seniβs mouth, Curator gave a quick βTh- I am Inesβ a quick reversal of Seni, it was hard to fight back the almost ingrained instinct to give his true name, reapers rarely had reason to lie. Coming up with some truths and lies to make sure the Geth didnβt notice the false story he would now craft, Curator hoped the geth would not notice the bullet wound at the back of this ones head, that would be problematic to explain.
β I have been investigating paranormal activities in the galaxy, and came here after finding out of the numerous activities going onβ Seni now Inesβs mouth quickly said before continuing with βmy biotic implants noticed the signals from the Tarp and I had to find out what it was, I know that most find Geth to be dangerous, but I bet thereβs more to the story than you guys just suddenly joining with So-Saren, am I rightβ excitedly spoke Ines as Curator held back his disgust at acting like a child, yet Curator knew what would happen if the Geth wised up and destroyed this ones body, it would take years to find another suitable host. βSo whatβs your nameβ ended Ines.

" We just wanted to get a look at the pretty Asari over here.. " he reached a hand forward to push her jacked aside, and she slapped his hand away, quickly covering herself with the jacket and buttoning the top button. " You'll have to wait until I'm on duty to ogle me.. Theres plenty of dancers inside if your that desperate... " she said, trying to keep a confident look on her face- which she managed, barely.
The two humans laughed for a moment, the Salarian awkwardly following their example-clearly new to the group from his behavior. " Were not asking.. " the blond human said, pulling a knife from his sleeve and holding it at Ulia. Her eyes widened a moment, then became calm again. " Good thing you're not allowed to hurt me.. " she muttered, staring the man with the knife in the eye. " Oh? and why not? " he asked, smirking, a sadistic glint to his eyes. Ulia blinked, then her spirits lifted greatly.
they didn't know who she was. She smiled, and brought her fingers to her lips, and whistled shrilly, making the men wince. " Hey! What the hell was that abo- " he was cut off by a powerful slam to his lower back and a sickening crack, doubling over in agony, screaming like a baby. Ulia smile cutely to the Elcor bouncer who had so valiently come to her rescue. The other two were staring at the Elcor in shock. " Expression: Are you alright? " the Elcor asked, Ulia nodded, smiling. " I am, thankyou. " She gave him a soft hug, before leaning on the railing and watching him deal with the other two. " With Intimidating Anger: I suggest you two leave before You join your friend on the Floor. "
They ran off post haste.

Checkmate.
Subject was redesignated as CURATOR and reclassified as PASSIVELY HOSTILE. It showed no desire of exposing these Geth to the biological population. There was no obvious reason to object it's requests and at least one very good reason not to. Please note the gun. Other possible reasons included departure from Omega and direct interaction with non-Geth race(s).
A one-word response was offered:
"Compliance."

"Look, I'm the best for a reason. I'm still alive, and that means I don't take jobs from just anyone." She paused. "You want me to help, tell me everything you plan on doing, otherwise no deal." She sat up in her seat, bringing her closer to him. "And I am not an engineer."

When he entered the club, he was overwhelmed by the intense soul pounding beat of the music. He missed this place greatly. As he walked through the flame hall way, a familiar face approached him. "Gilkur! Long time no see! It's good to see your not dead yet." Mayce said in a joking matter. Mayce and the Batarian bumped their forearms together in a friendly greeting. "Mayce, you crazy bastard, I still can't believe your alive. You've come along way from being Aria's errand boy/ play thing." Gilkur said, taking a drag on his cigarette. "As you already know, Aria wants to see you. She is also expecting her package." Mayce looked at him with a nostalgic smile. "I know the drill, I'm going right now, it was good to see you again." Mayce walked past him with a wave and continued on into the club.

Mayce entered the flashing lights and the swirling fog that was Afterlife. He stood there for a bit tapping his foot to the beat with a big smile on his face. He looked over to the dance floor and thought about going over to it, it had been 9 months since he'd been dancing and he was itching to get back to it. Then one of his men tapped him on the shoulder. "Um, sir. Shouldn't we be delivering the package to miss Aria." "What? Oh, right right." He signaled for his men to follow. He walked up to the Turian who guarded one of the two ways to get to Arias lookout. "Look'in good Quarik, your jaw looks like it's better." The slack-jawed Turian glared at him. Mayce smiled at him and patted him on the shoulder as he passed him.
Mayce entered Arias private room with a sense of nostalgia. It had been a long time since he had been back here. He signaled his men to wait at the entrance. Mayce saw an odd group waiting in seats. He noticed a woman with basic armor except on her arm. He then heard an all too familiar voice. "Mayce, your looking well. It seems Dralak's been good to you." He turned towards the source of the voice with a wide grin. Aria walked up towards Mayce with a predatory cat like grace that was befitting of her. "Aria, your looking as alluring and deadly as ever." He walked towards her, grabbed her hand and kissed it. "You always were the charmer Mayce." she said teasingly. "Come sit down.""Who are the stiffs?" Mayce said gesturing to the group behind him. "No one of your concern." Aria said as she strutted back to her seat. He walked past her guards, nodding to a few and receiving the same. "You know, they aren't many people I trust without a scan." "Oh come on Aria, as far as I'm concerned, I never left your service. You know I would do anything for you with few exceptions." Mayce said flirtingly. Mayce had missed the playful banter him an Aria used to engage in. He also missed the nights he spent with her in her chambers.
"So Ive brought you your package. Is their something you need me to do with it? Dralak was very vague on what I was supposed to do with it." Aria smiled her sinister smile and handed him a holopad. "This has everything you need to know on it and more." Mayce took the holopad and slid it into his pocket. "I'll take the package for now and when you bring me what i requested in the instructions, then you will receive your full payment." Aria said very matter of factly. "Will do ma'am." he said with a slight nod. "Come and see me some time, Mayce. I would like to have some.....fun with you before you leave again." Aria said, her tone filled with seduction. "How could I refuse?" Mayce stood up and gave her a bow. He then signaled for his men to push the package into the room and then follow him.
As Mayce and his men descended the stair case, his eyes were drawn to the dance floor. He looked to his men. "Alright boys, your dismissed, grab a drink, grab a girl and have some fun! That's an order!" They all saluted with large smiles on their faces. "Sir, yes sir!" They then spread out among the crowd on the club. He then looked back at the dance floor. Though he wanted to dance, he much rather have a partner. He knows he could ask any one of the many Asari dancers to dance with him, after all he was a vip according to Aria, but they all ways laid it on too thick with their act. He knew none of them would really be into it. So he started too look around the club for a suitable dance partner. Mayce then noticed a box with two Quarians sitting in it, a male and a female. From their body language, he could tell they weren't together, it looked more like a business proposition, but that mattered little to Mayce. He was a pirate after all.
Mayce walked up to the two Quarians and spoke. "Excuse me." He then bowed slightly and offered his hand to the female. "May I have this dance?"

The other Quarian, Kozz, was pretty open about his plan, but he seemed confident enough. Not everyday was a pilot slotted to receive 60% of a catch, and Niki knew she needed more money. If anything, it would be a good cure for boredom. She was about to accept his offer, when a human hand entered her field of vision, followed by a strong voice. It almost startled Niki.
"May I have this dance?"
She started speaking immediately, without thinking.
"I..uhm...no...er It's not that I dont...er...I'm sort of...uhm...ta...with him." she motioned to Kozz

Furniture (some practical, some cosmetic), decorative sculpture (natural evolution generates an fascination with form based on obsolete psychological triggers), non-fruit-bearing-plant (a fern of sorts with no known practical value. Likely serves that very fascination with form & color), various appliances for meal preparation, communication devices for amusement, a bed, light sources, hygene products, photographs & holographs (a symptom of organic sentimentality), storage containers, clothes, doors (providing privacy and dividing chambers), stacks of paper forms, empty takeout containers, and... Something here isn't right. What are these machines? They are neither a known part of organic behavior nor positioned in any practical or aesthetic pattern preferred by organics.
Without waiting for a reply, they add to the line of demands "Identifyindicatedsubjects: NON-ORGANIC-CONTEMPORARY ENVIRONMENTAL FURNISHINGS"
If it were possible, the Geth would be excited, but the nearest the could come was curious. So much yet to be understood, so much potential for information sharing, the machine's occupants would have desperately preferred to us a more efficient form of communication, but if nothing else, machines were patient.

First the host. The pseudo-Quarian circled the pseudo-Drell, scanning each side and gathering thermal information as it orbited. A bullet-hole. Less than point-blank range. Probably a contact shot. How could we have missed this? Had this been a live Drell, such a wound would have been fatal. Perhaps that's what happened. Perhaps their mysterious host once shared a body with an organic. No. This was not supported by the fact that there was no brain. In its place there was processing device.
But hold on...
This processor is too small and simple for the level of responses demonstrated by this Curator. This is not Curator's platform. A further scan confirmed the Geths' suspicions. An alien type of send-receive device was attached to the processing unit. Curator has only been present by proxy. That still doesn't explain the Drell form. Reviewing the thermal scans in greater detail provided some insight. This organic matter around the processor... These are the remnants of an organic brain. After brief deliberation (undetectable by organic standards) a hypothesis was established. From the information present so far, it was possible that the mechanical endoskeleton grew within the body of this man. The processor had slowly replaced the brain and managed all of its former functions as well as some processes of its own. This hypothesis was supported by the food containers around the room. Remnants of fish and leafy vegetables, high in Magnesium, Iron, and Zinc, all of which were possible contents of the endoskeleton. Some of these foods were not commonly part of the Drell diet as it reacts poorly with their biology, resulting in frequent allergic reactions and digestive problems. At this point, the Drell digestive track had been largely untouched. The geth were certain that if they were to look, they would find surgical scars where cybernetic implants had been deposited, likely containing reserves of plastic extract, presumably also used in the inorganic constructs. This hypothesis would explain the lack of feng-shui in the room. It seems that the organic's personal effects had been here for some time before the "Antiques" were added.
This left one daunting question. Why? The Geth examined the room, searching or information and inspiration. A Citadel Security badge sitting on the table featured the name Seni. Seni what? The rest was illegible. In any case, Seni was likely the name of the apartment's late occupant. The one with the bullet in his head. This was not enough information to go on. A dead law-enforcement officer, a host both present and absent, "Antiques", and ... A signal? There had been a radio interference in the room since the Geth had entered. It was likely why Curator chose a vocal form of communication. At first it had seemed innocuous, the kind of signal that could come from anywhere. Natural geographical formations, many electronic send-receive devices on the same channel, solar activity, anywhere, but now, in the quest for answers, the Geth focused on it. The intensity of the signal now seemed suspiciously high for most incidental interference, and it was possible there was an underlying pattern. The frequency extended both above and below the Geths range of detection. It could even carry into other forms of electro-magnetism that this platform was not equipped to detect. This might explain the difficulty in detecting a pattern and its resemblance to interference.
The Geth turned their attention to the "Antiques". The signal strength was directly proportionate to the cube of the receivers proximity to the objects. Far greater than the 1 to 1 ratio common of other wave-form signals. This was something else. The Geth stepped towards the large central machine and rested a hand on its surface, partly to test the material, partially some other reason that the Geth found themselves unable to describe. Something was happening.

She sighed, leaving her jacket behind the bar for safe keeping, and grabbing two wipes and a sterile, scentless cleaning solution in a dispenser bottle, walking to one of the cleared-but not cleaned tables, and spraying it down. She rolled her eyes at the two turians at the booth to her left who seemed more interested in her bending over the table then the half-naked dancer on stage right next to them. Perhaps it was her age that got so much attention.. perverts.
