Road to Ruin

Road to Ruin

0 INK

An invading tribe from across the channel, a Druid priest's vision to save the village, and inevitable clash between peoples where no one knows the truth and trust is far from sight.

2,916 readers have visited Road to Ruin since AvengerSpirit created it.

Introduction

Image

Peace between neighboring tribes was always few and far between. The Celtic tribes are accustomed to fighting with each other; it is however when enemies come from far distances and are of unknown origins that give the tribes grief. The Celts are a fearless group that enjoy the warfare and do it very well. They are also a very cultural group who enjoy their music, dance, festivals and above all pleasing their gods.

The Celtic tribe of Cantae located in what would one day be southern Scotland, near where Hadrian’s Wall would be erected, lived surrounded by enemies. They fought to stay alive and had many champions, but they also prospered through trade and peaceful diplomacy. Unlike many of other tribes, Cantae is ruled primarily by males including the religious structure. While the women are still allowed to fight, they are not allowed to be leaders or Druid priestesses.

Worse than being more oppressed, the priests decreed that no one within the tribe is allowed to perform magick except for them. Upon being caught for magick one is punishable by death. One day a trader brought news of a warring foreign tribe that came from across the channel, what would one day be called Ireland. He talked of their skills and how they were leveling tribes in their path. The priests prayed for a way to be delivered as they prepared for battle.

The High Priest received a vision from the gods saying that if the tribe were to sacrifice what was most valued to them the invading tribe would spare them. This started the process of trying to find what was the most valued. So far only a few people had been sacrificed to the gods with no sign that they had made the correct choice. Something has to be done to stop the needless bloodshed and the invading tribe.

Setting

During the Iron Age around 500 BCE, so very much prior to the Roman invasion. Ancient Scotland. See map for this: Find the bottom red line and if you can read the tiny writing it says Hadrian’s Wall. This a Roman rendering map, all right. About fifty or more miles is where the Cantae tribe is located. Now is you look at the little cove area on the left side of that red line and can read it because I have a hard time seeing it, it says Solway Fifth I believe. This is the place where the foreign tribe is going to be arriving at and likely to have base camp to watch over their ships. So there can be plenty of tribes to encounter along the way. I hope this gives a relative idea on where our characters will be.

Magick

If from Cantae the ability to do magick of any kind unless a Druid priest must be hidden. Other tribes surrounding or invading tribe don’t have the same rules. Magick can be just about anything, but please don’t go overboard. If you have a question concerning it just ask. Not everyone has to be able to do magick. It is just an option.

I'll find you somewhere to stay and get you something to eat before we leave you, Adair said to the woman riding behind him before turning his eyes back to the village. He kept his gaze trained on the smoke rising from varied sections of the area, the sources unknown for the moment.

"I think we should get just what is needed and leave, the less time we waste here the better."

Eoin's words expressed what he had already been thinking at seeing the town. Men from whoever had already gotten as far as Cantae, even if who they were exactly was unknown. There could easily be more lingering in this place as well. And if not here already, then surely on their way. He thought silently. Even his sight couldn't foresee what trouble might await them inside the village. "Agreed," Adair said as he turned toward Eoin, "The sooner we're on our way, the sooner I can get rid of you all anyway, right....?" Adair let the jest trail off as he saw the man skirting the horse further away from him.

Eoin's whole demeanor had changed in an instant. The way he was looking at Adair now suggested he was incredibly wary for some reason, and it was obvious Adair was the source of it. Seriously? Is he that upset over a joke? The thought was the most obvious, but there was a sneaking suspicion that the jest wasn't the problem. Nobody could be that ill-humored...

"Is something the matter?" Adair asked him bluntly. There was no point dancing around the issue and apologizing for something he was unsure of. Might as well have the matter out into the open and get past it.

For the first time since they had broken camp earlier in the morning, Adair debated whether or not staying with the group was the right decision or not...

Eoin

It was a small tense sensation that coursed through the air as Adair called Eoin out on his new found act. It was true that Eoin did suspect him of being what he considered tainted, magik being on of the worst things to come into the hands of man in his own opinion. He looked back at the group behind them as the two were still parallel on their path towards the village.
Sure the others were out of ear shout he looks at Adair and speaks. "I would not have thought a man like you would have need of such a.. gift." It was obvious that the last word was easily going to be something else had he not decided to change what he was going to say originally.

He was referring to the power of magik he could sense coming from Adair not long before, but even then he did not know exactly what it was that Adair could really do with his own gift.
"In my experience such men are not worthy of anything but the tip of my blade.." He sheds another look back towards the others "But I find that the same scent drowns out almost the whole group as well.

He doesn't look back at Adair, as if the conversation was disgraceful in some understanding.

He had been following this strange group for some time now, completely undetected, for he had learned long ago how to blend his scent and body into his environment so that not even the horses sitting up wind from him could catch his smell.
Still, even with the precautions he had taken, Galan Erlich stole a paranoid glance over his shoulder, searching for the other Pict's he had escaped two days ago.
He knew they would eventually find him, he could avoid anyone but not his own people, but here, being so close to the Celtic village, he hoped they wouldn't come so close into Tribal lands. One Pict was easier to hide than a dozen.
Again, Galan turned to study the group. All of them smelled of magick, except for the blonde-giant who eyed the others.
The man next to the giant, in the lead was one Galan knew he had to be wary of, for he had the look of a expert traveler, his gaze overattentive and hawk-like. When that man was on watch at night, Galan had to retreat deeper into the shadows of the trees to avoid being spotted.
The two that the Pict found most intriguing was the young, black-haired warrior and the even younger, beautiful flame-haired woman who rode in the saddle with him. The warrior was more of a curiosity, his hair not a natural color for a Celt or a Pict, as well as the cold-blue of his eyes. The woman however, had a smell of powerful magic, and he noticed her pulling out a strange object in the past day or so, but never revealing it among her companions,
What are you hiding?, Galan thought to himself, climbing out of his tree and waiting for the travelers to pass by.
The Spirits had guided him to this group for a reason, and he had a feeling he would find out soon enough.

It was quite obvious Eoin was more than just a little upset now. Magic was rare in this world, but it seemed the man treated it nearly the same as most other people treated anything they didn't rightly see as 'common' or truly understand. But rather than get upset at the thought of not being accepted by those certain individuals, Adair had come to pity them. Not for their lack of skill in any magical arts or even that they would never have the knowledge of what using a gift, as Eoin had called it, such as the one Adair had; but he pitied them because they often became so fixated on the hatred and disdain of magic, that it blinded them to the real truth of the matter.

"In my experience such men are not worthy of anything but the tip of my blade.." Looking back toward Cadeyrn and Sorcha, Eoin added, "But I find that the same scent drowns out almost the whole group as well."

That was interesting. Adair couldn't sense latent magic like Eoin was obviously could, so finding out Cadeyrn or Sorcha, or perhaps both, had the use of magic as well was a piece of information Adair was quite intrigued to know. His guess was that magic only manifested itself in Sorcha though, seeing as how Eoin was here on Cadeyrn's behalf. Adair doubted the man was someone who would tolerate a flaw in one person and not another. Committing the information to memory, Adair turned his thoughts back to Eoin's issue at hand. Him.

Ignoring the comment of being worthy only of the tip of Eoin's blade, Adair continued in a way that was less likely to provoke the big man. "I would agree with you in most cases. But it is also my opinion that our world of men are, in a whole, one giant kettle of ignorance. Yet, that doesn't make everyone ignorant in themselves, just the perception of the whole. Same goes for magic. Many can be used for harm or misdeeds, but that is determined by the individual, wouldn't you agree?" Keeping his tone level as he continued, Adair wondered if Eoin was already too far gone on the subject to listen further. He continued anyway. "A blade could be misused in the wrong hands as well as a great utility in the right hands.

He didn't bother pressing the issue further. Eoin would make up his own mind whether or not to tolerate it. If not, it only gave Adair an excuse to press on alone after the village.

Eoin

The conversation between Adair and Eoin was growing.
Eoin himself was starting to see that the man next to him was more thoughtful then the usual soldier that he encounters in his travels. He had a strong understanding of people and what made them more then me when the time came to it.

Everyone was passing through the threshold of the villages boundaries now, the off look of the entire group was attracting several weary stares from the older folk and none the least were the ones given towards Adair and Eoin's direction. It was easy to see that the village itself didn't get many travelers and that those who were unknown could not shed an uneasy air so easily through the villages boarder.

Eoin looked back at Adair as he finished speaking, he was correct that a blade could misused and very well so. But he knew that his own words had more of an unforeseen essence too the. "When the soldiers came to take my home.. there was a man among them." Eoin spoke softly as he looked on ahead, sure that Adair could still hear him. "Dark plumes of thick ashen smoke flowed out of his hands like water from a great fall.. it turned out the smoke could flay any man it touched within moments."

"That was the night my homeland fell to invasion"
He looked back at the young warrior to emphasis how he felt about the subject, the thought itself created an absent stare on his face. He kipped the horse to keep better time with Adair's and began to cast his sight about the village in an effort to get better sight of their surroundings. "No man.. should have power like that." Eoin spoke lastly as he spotted a large communal long house near the villages center.

Re: Road to Ruin

I have internet now, so I will get my post up sometime today.

Re: Road to Ruin

Well try as I might i can't get a post up before I move. But as soon as internet is on at the apartment I will get my post up. Sorry for the long delay but I'm at the last part of my moving. The hardest part. I leave tomorrow so hopefully there will be something up by the end of the week early next week at the latest.

Re: Road to Ruin

I am going to do my best to get a post up today or tomorrow. I am actually doing a double move: moving back from college and then moving two states away. So internet is going to be iffy for a while. I hope to get things settled or small pockets of internet to post when I can. On another note, Zombie has finals this week.

Re: Road to Ruin

That's fine. Now that I have internet I hope to get a post up soon. I figured Rurai's group is still miles away. If we went with the meeting in the middle, they would cross paths the next night/early morning time. So the next few posts give or take.

Re: Road to Ruin

I didn't put the name or general layout of the village in my post because I have no idea what they are. Also, where exactly is Ruari's party about now?

Re: Road to Ruin

I was giving legacy until tonight to post as another rp we three are in just got started. I can poke Zombie any time to get a post in, I just haven't gotten around to it. I'm in the process of packing up to move, trying to find a new vehicle, and find a new place to live. So its not the best situation over here. I'll start poking people tonight.

Re: Road to Ruin

At this point this is were I begin to see a pattern in some RPs, I am beginning to think that this one has seen the best it can see. I have been watching the Rp for a while since my last post and even though the OOC remains bare I can tell that several people are having a hard time getting back to post.

Hopefully this can be resolved because I was rather hoping for this Rp to continue.

Re: Road to Ruin

I will do my best to get a post up sometime today. I have my last final and then I'm free.

Re: Road to Ruin

I will get my post up sometime today. I have two finals to get through first and after the wreck everything has been hectic.

Re: Road to Ruin

It's been a rough week/weekend for me guys, but my post is going up NOOOOW!

Re: Road to Ruin

Its okay at this point. I won't have internet really (ability to post) now as I was in a wreck yesterday and car is likely totaled. So yeah.

Re: Road to Ruin

Sorry about my post being delayed so far, work has been retarded the past to days and concentration seems to be eluding me. I'm working through it right now and hopefully can focus long enough to get it up here shortly!

Re: Road to Ruin

I pretty much have a handle on who we were waiting on, SL. But she hasn't been on in almost two weeks. We can't wait around. Remy will be able to post once we have met the invaders.

legacy, right now they are about 2 miles outside of the next village where we will drop of Gavina unless she comes back. Even then she can either follow us or go back to the tribe and wait as that is where we will head back to.

Otherwise this is the plan. We post here, go to next tribe drop of Gavina. Then go until the next night with whatever banter. The next night/early morning is where we will met up with the invaders, Ruari's team, and then go back to their base camp. After that back to Cantae where the second phase begins.

Any questions?

Re: Road to Ruin

I'll get another post in once I get off work tomorrow, unless someone else is planning on posting. Or are we doing a time skip to the next village?

Re: Road to Ruin

I would be completely fine with a time skip, it might be useful to see which players are still around and which ones are waiting on something.

Re: Road to Ruin

You're main forces? No. They are waiting on the second team you sent out or making their way much slower at this point. Ruari is going to cross our group at the end of the second night as we would be traveling after then those who stop at every tribe for a length of time. They will bring the group back to you.

Re: Road to Ruin

that is fine with me and should i say that my forces are close to the cantae now?

Re: Road to Ruin

Do you guys mind if we do a short time skip so that we can get the ball rolling a bit, so to speak?

Yeah well right now I hate the army, but what else is new. I just hope his shoulders don't get him put on permanent profile because then I don't know what we're going to do. Sadly without the army, we're on the streets or rather woods cause that's where we'd go.

Re: Road to Ruin

Alright, got another post in. Until we hear back from Salmai, I'm just going to assume Gavina is still with us on Donn. And I couldn't think of a better nickname to poke at Eoin Oboro, sorry. 'Hulk' unfortunately won't exist for a couple thousand more years....

Oh, and I just have to say, Sometimes I miss the Military. And other days I am definitely glad I got out!

Re: Road to Ruin

I'm waiting on a nice allotment of money so I can move to VA to be closer to my husband. Nine hours away is kind of hard when he's not on deployment. I've got two weeks of school left, then finals. I have to take care of my house, and the dogs (my children), deal with the stress of moving, money problems, packing, etc. And now dealing with my depression that used to only be seasonal which means now more paperwork so the army can hopefully help us out. Yeah I need this. I need the stress relief before I go crazier than I already am. Its just not enough anymore.... Sorry. That was way out of line. I'm glad everything is going well now for you and welcome back. Thank you for understanding.
