"If we could open some windows that would be fabulous Alex replied, her eyes squinting as she peered through the fog. "I'll cover you, okay?"

And she did. She took several shots, catching one man in the shoulder, and another in the head.

"This is fucking retarded," she muttered under her breath, flinching when a bullet passed by way too close.

It wasn't long before Alex barelled into the office after Charlie.

"You take forever," she muttered, coughing heavily as she stood guard by the door and shouted out a few instructions to her partner.

"Open up the vents, windows, use that button there. No, that one!"

She swore under her breath when a bullet came too close. Shaking her head, she glanced back towards the selection of weapons they had in the office. She moved immediately to a few flash bombs, picked one out, then rolled it towards the haphazard crowd.

"Fire in the hole, motherfuckers!" she shouted in crude Russian.

"You're a joy to have during a break-out." Alex replied, listening to the violent swearing as the room errupted into several flashes of light. Casey took her time then, firing at one, another, a third and a forth, and she watched them drop like flies.

None with life-ending injuries of course, just painful ones. Knee-caps and testicles and the like.

Not long after Ulrich had approached the community board, a young woman came walking into Gambit's bar, dressed in a black pea coat, with a checkered scarf bundled about her neck. Her hair was soft white, like snow in spring time, and her eyes a very distinct shade of blue.

She flicked a tongue out over the ring that pierced her lip, picking up an envelope from out of her pocket and pinning it to the community board. It was addressed, simply, to Petyr.

"You don't need to come back to keep me company, babe." she told him lazily. "I'm having fun watching you in the midst of the dating scene." She reached over, running a hand over his chest and smiling.

"I do miss you though. Just a little. I've been lonely, but I sure am glad you're having a whole bunch of fun."

In all the commotion, the woman at the board hadn't noticed that the young man was coming straight for her. She tacked the letter, nodding quietly to herself before turning to the door.

Of course, she had to wait for the rest of the men to pile out before she could reach for the handle herself.

And that was when he came upon her.

Looking up, she startled, eyes wide and her expression unreadable as she lifted a slender, gloved hand to touch at her cheek. One thing was certain: she wasn't prepared for this meeting.

"Edgar," she finally murmured, her hands clenching. There was a fear, almost, an apprehension, as if she expected he would hurt her.

He had good reason to.

"You're hurting me!" she cried in Russian, yet she made no move to rip herself away. She did, however, attempted to snatch the letter away from his hand, successfully gripping one side and tearing it in half. The motion had brought him close to her chest, and she remembered how much stronger he was than her. She remembered the closeness, and it made her ache inside.

"Please," she breathed, though she didn't exactly know why she was pleading.

She was shocked to silence, her eyes squeezing shut as she turned her face away. The force of his screams made her ears ring with their intensity, and when the silence faded, opening up a window for her response, she could only stand still, her fingertips trembling.

"It's obvious isn't it?" she said, her throat raw with nerves. Tentatively, she looked back to meet his eyes.

"I never died."

Her breath came in short gasps, practically shaking with fear as her back met the brick wall firmly. She had braced herself for some kind of a strike, but none came. Her arms tingled where he had gripped her, and she found herself staring into his eyes, her teeth gritting as she hesitantly, but obediently spread her legs.

Saying nothing, she merely bit her cheek and turned away.

Shaking hands lifted to hastily unbutton the jacket. Slipping it off of her slender shoulders, she unlaced her scarf, and deposited both items on the ground before slowly turning to put her hands against the wall. The three-quarter sleeves of her black blouse covered most of her skin, but the back of the neckline dipped low enough to show that hammer and stars tattoo that had always been there. The shirt itself was too fitting for her to conceal anything.

Still, she remained silent, resting her forehead against the brick wall and sniffing once, before releasing a tremulous, breathy sigh.

"Set the record straight." she breathed, never opening her eyes.

She chanced a glance back in his direction. "Don't concern yourself with this. It's not your problem. You have to understand that much. I don't want you near them."

The warmth of his palm made her shiver, but she ignored it. She had to.

She turned around, as he instructed, and hugged her arms to her chest as she looked up into his eyes.

Then, in fluid, almost musical Russian, she told him, "My name is Nikita Gorbechev."

She looked worried, her eyes searching his. If he didn't believe her, she didn't know what she'd do. It wouldn't end well, and she was almost certain he'd kill her if he thought she was an imposter.

She flushed, receiving the jacket and scarf and stumbling back a step. Taking another breath, the woman silently shook her head.

"No. We didn't."

But boy her face burned as if they had.

"What does it matter what I tell you now?" she replied sharply. "You won't believe anything I say. And you just fucking...held me against the wall! You have no idea what was going on at the time, what I was trying to protect you from!" she cried at him.

"Of course I loved you. It was why I did what I did."

And there was no deception. Edgar had been the catalyst.

"They were going to kill you, Edgar!"

And, much to her surprise, she was beginning to tear up. "You and everyone else. I found out about it, intercepted a communications between Americans stationed here and the ones on US soil. They were going to send in a tactical squad to kill every single one of us for simply dealing with arms."

She covered her mouth with her hands, suppressing a sob.

"So I dropped a hint. A gave us all away, better to be jailed than murdered like dogs in the streets."

"I don't know what to say!" she cried at his back. "I never lied to you or anyone else, and I couldn't contact you because I wasn't allowed to. The American government relocated me here. Out of reach."

And still she hadn't lied. Regardless, she shoved her hands into the arms of her jacket, and turned to walk away.

"Then what would have happened?" she shouted back. "We'd be on the run, with no life to live! They'd be after our heads and we would have no real chance for a future. Look at you now, you work within a company that is respectable. You have life, an opportunity. It is only me that I need to worry about now, and I'm just fine with that."

Tears flowed, and she shook her head.

"I'm not going to ruin your life, Edgar. Not again."

She turned and quickly started to walk off.

"As long as I've been here, I would be a fool not to know who the Invictus are. They have a prominent presence." she told him over her shoulder. She hesitated and only slightly turned back to face him.

"What do you want from me?" she finally asked.

"I don't know what I want." she said quietly after a few moment's of thought. "I wanted to stay. I wanted to make it work...but so much has happened. They're out looking for me again, and though I can honestly say that my heart..." She closed her eyes, turning to face him fully.

"My heart...yearns for you, Edgar. I just...don't know that I'm the same person you once knew."

She put a hand to her face. "I've given up so much...I just...I don't know that I can make you any promises."

He'd been out of her life for so, so long...

Tentatively, her hands came around to encircle his waist, and she rested her cheek to his chest, eyes closing as she sighed.

"If there had been a better way, I would have taken it." she murmured. "I just had to act so fast." She shook her head, pursing her lips as she pulled back, and released her hands from behind him so she could cup his face in her hands.

Then, very briefly, and very tenderly did she brush her lips against his.

"I have go to, Edgar." she told him.
