Steve had a cut on his arm, and by no means a small one either. It looked like something had taken a knife, put it just below his elbow and ran it down his forearm to the just above the wrist, then hastily wrapped some bits of fabric around it to keep it closed. The blood was smeared all over his arm, hands, chest, neck and face, staining a lovely white dress shirt that was worn under his blue coat (which was also stained dark).
However the bleeding had long since stopped and the man looked anything but worried, more disgruntled. Needless to say, people kept their distance.

Tavi went into the hospital for her first shift. She was excited to finally have a job as a doctor after going through so much medical school. She walked into the emergency room to greet her first patient. "Steve?" she inquired to the waiting room. She looked around and spotted Steve. He was pretty obvious as people kept their distance from him due to the cut. "Lets get you checked out." and motioned for him to follow her through the doors.
Steve took a moment to register that his name had been spoken, staring blankly into space until he realized, then rose quickly. While usually a first and last name would be recorded for the patient, he simply had 'Steve'. "Yes, good," he stated and marched on over to the doors. He was a tall man with odd blue hair but was otherwise unremarkable, just the way he liked it.
Tavi led him to a room and motioned for him to sit on the bed. As she gingerly took off the bandages to get a better look at the cut, she started making conversation. "So, how did you get cut like this?" It was in a very strange location. it didn't look like he had cut himself, but just in case she wanted to give him the chance to say so.
Steve didn't seem to understand the social queues going on. "It was inflicted by a sharp metal object heated to sixty degrees Celsius by black candle..." he began and then cleared his throat. "I work with... Heavy machinery. I slipped and was... sent home from work."
Tavi smirked, she knew he wasn't telling her something. "Right, slipped. Well, it looks like the bleeding stopped, but we should still stitch it up because of the place it is in." She got up and rifled through some drawers until she found a needle and thread. "What kind of heavy machinery do you work with?"
Steve narrowed his eyes and his lip curled in distaste. "Aggressive machinery," he grunted, only to correct, "I work with... Saw blades. And wood. And as you can see by the lack of saw dust I have thoroughly cleaned and sterilized the wound. So please begin the flesh stitching." Judging by the blood, he hadn't cleaned very well.
She looked at the wound. She didn't see sawdust but she did see that it wasn't cleaned. So she took out some bactine and a cotton swab and started sterilizing it. "Well, just to be sure, I'm going to clean it anyway. This might sting. Aggressive machinery and saw blades. So you work in some kind of construction field?" She dabbed the swab along the wound, which turned out to be big enough to need more than one.
Steve narrowed his eyes, the cogs in his head working away to figure out just what industries had saw blades in them. "Yes. Construction," he stated, "There are many... black candles in construction. New policies. Environmentally friendly. Helps keep... aggressive machinery under control." His eyes narrowed even further in irritation. "Normally."
She inwardly giggled and had to hold back her reaction. "Black candles in construction? That's strange. Why would they put black candles in an environmental initiative? And how do they keep machinery under control?" She inquired, as she finished swabbing and picked up the needle and thread. She would get the real answer as to how he got the wound eventually. He was a terrible liar.
Steve raised his eyes to stare at her giggling, then his jaw contorted into a big grin, one that was probably meant to be amused but looked lopsided. "It is a ritual." His eyes glanced left and right, then back on her. "I mean... Like talking to a computer or naming a boat. Pretending things have feelings is an entirely normal activity for people to perform."
Black candles? Pretending things have feelings? Now she was just confused. "Well yes, of course, but what do the black candles do in the ritual? I mean, it seems counterintuitive to name anything after the color that plants turn when they die in an environmental initiative." She threaded the needle. "This will just prick a little bit." and she started stitching the cut.
Steve didn't even seem to notice the needle in his skin. "It's... Environmentally friendly to use candles instead of electric lights..." Steve mumbled, "And it cannot leave the flame of the black candles- ah. The machine... Cannot. Move. At all. That is not something machines do. Except when we make them."
Tavi smiled. She was about halfway done at this point. "So you make all the machines in the world then. And what cannot leave the flame of the black candles?" She continued stitching up the wound expertly, taking care around the nastier looking parts of the wound.
Steve narrowed his eyes. "Bugs. In the machinery. Stay out of construction. It is a complicated and dangerous industry. Oh the fate of the blue collar worker. It is so... hazardous." His eyes finally un-narrowed so that he could look at her properly. "Am I able to take home the blood. Like a doggy bag from a restaurant. Or is that an unusual thing to request? If it is, then I did not request it."
She was taken aback at the unusual request. "Um yes, sir that is an unusual request. But, how about I get you a change of clothes and you can keep your current ones that have the blood on them." She paused for a moment. "you know that if you need your blood tested, we have state-of-the-art equipment here. We can test it for you."
