Philius Percival Wolfinson

By all appearances, a lithe bibliophile and amature historian.

0 · 1,341 views · located in Epilogue Books

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Dignitas

Description

Physical description:
Philius is on the short side, 5'7, and appears to be in his late 20s or early 30s. He has wavy light brown hair that's just begun to thin on top. Despite a lithe wiry runner's build, he looks stronger. He owes his broad shoulders and barrel chest to his lineage, primarily subsistence farmers until two generations ago.

Personality:
He's generally quiet, though not necessarily shy, until he's discussing something he's genuinely enthused about. If this happens, good luck stopping him before he's managed to formulate a lesson plan and begin an impromptu class. He loves history, anthropology, speculative fiction, classic literature, ancient languages, and pretty much anything else that deals with the human condition but doesn't come near the realm of hard science.

Equipment: Tweed. A wooden pointer. Sweater vests. Bow ties. Antique spectacles. Books. Probably some medieval weaponry along with a rapier or two.

Abilities: Languages; lots of them. Enthusiasm. Martial skill. An intense gaze of disapproval. A stiff upper lip. Etiquette. Perhaps some book magic later in his story.

Historical Background:
A pretty standard middle-class upbringing with parents who felt the value of knowledge could never be overstated. Following this, a long stay in the tertiary education system, via grants and scholarships, to live as a full time student as long as he could manage it without touching too heavily on any sciences. Phil eventually decided to open a book shop and live above it in a small flat, as this came as close to his idea of heaven as he cared to dare for. Potential aspirations toward a career in professoring if the desire should strike him.

So begins...

The large shop window shone in the light of the streetlamps of East Lanterna Way, and despite the dust gathered on the inside and the sill, Philius could still make out some of the weathered writing from the previous business to occupy this lot. “...& Sons Fine... -ware.” He looked down at the ring of keys resting in his hand, looked back at the weathered Victorian-style flat-above-shop combo, and sighed his contentment, approaching the front door, HIS front door, for the first time since he’d purchased it.

The patter of feet could clearly be heard. It wasn't bare foot onto concrete, but the clopping of heavy women's shoes. An exhausted giggle followed shortly after.

Winging it around the corner was a young lady with long, vivid red hair, her skirts lifted up to prevent her legs from getting tangled. She was dressed in a very high, neo Victorian fashion, with the bodice, the boots, the bustle, and the plethora of strings. She looked behind her with a grin, but she certainly wasn't looking out in front of her.

Right in front of her, where the man was.

Philius looked up from his reverie just in time to get a facefull of ginger and get knocked arse over teakettle. His hand flew to his face, checking for his glasses. Satisfied that they were still perched atop his nose, he turned his attention to the smartly-dressed confection now very much occupying his proximity. "Are you hurt, mademoiselle?"

[[To the untrained ear, his accent would sound like a mixture of British and American English. To those in the know, it is a boarding school cultivated transatlantic.]]

The young woman pushed herself up onto her hands, rubbing a spot on her forehead. She looked down onto the man beside her, and she slipped her lip between her teeth. She tried a smile and a wave. "A-ha-ha. Why...no...and I'm awfully sorry about that! I'd stick around to make sure you're alright, too, bu-"

"LEELA CARROLL!"

Yet another woman came stomping around the corner, this one much older than the other, if only a decade over the man's age. She wore a similar gown to the younger, but her own was lilac, and had a high, white neck. Her hair was brown, held up by many barrettes. She carried a fan in one hand.

The woman was seething at first, then all too surprised once she surveyed the scene. "Leela, what have you done!" she growled, reaching out to grab the redhead from the back of her dress and, with surprising strength, raise her onto her feet. When she looked upon the man, her expression became much more sympathetic. "You poor dear. Are you alright? Allow me to help you up! I must apologize for my daughter's misconduct!" She held a hand out to him.

East Lanterna way - This was something that Callandra hadn't made a run down in quite some time. Part of the infamous Verinotte Hollow.

Typical for Tech Con employees, she was driving a white Toyota HiLux down the narrow lantern lined road, cobbles signing their protest under large black rubber tires as the truck pulled up to what looked like some people on the side.

Thumping techno music echoed from the clearly marked truck, bearing the familiar logo on the side of the truck.

Booming bass echoed in the cabin as the truck came to a slow and ponderous stop besides the small group of people, the happenings on the side of the road.

Black tinted windows rolled down slowly but surely as a young woman with short brown hair stared at the group.

"Looks like a regular fuck-fest down here. Hey, c'mere." She called out.

He hesitated, unused to accepting a hand up from anybody other than a sparring partner, let alone beautifully dressed women of indeterminate middle age, but manners were second nature at this juncture and he instinctively knew it would be rude not to accept. He grasped the offered hand and came to his feet, examining the woman's eyes as he spoke.

"I am no worse for wear, my dear lady, and you needn't trouble your conscience with it. I am Philius Percival Wolfinson. Whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?"

There was unmistakable interest in his eyes and though there was an element of physical attraction (being suddenly assaulted by the presence of two such comely women in quick succession can have that effect), the majority of it was pure curiosity. His hand remained holding hers as he gave a slight bow.

A nearby window shutter was pulled down, parting the bright green shades as a suspicious gaze was thrown in the groups direction, especially at the nearby vehicle. Tech-Con in Verinotte Square? That wasn't going to go without reply, the shutters closed and the door to the nearby Gae Ceann Clubhouse flew open with a earsplitting crack.

A bouncer clad in a tight leather cut bearing the vibrant green skull and reverse anarchy symbol of the local motorcycle gang pointed at the vehicle, rapping his knuckles against the frame of the door and catching a rifle that was thrown to him from the inside. The bouncer cocked it, bearing his silver teeth and slinging it over his shoulder.

The bouncer stared daggers at the vehicle and it's occupant; Callandra. The body language was obvious. This is our territory, get the fuck out.

The music was promptly turned down and the lone Tech Con Senior captain reached for her radio, keying it twice she called in. "Echo One niner three to central, I'm at Grid V-One Nine Seven, See if you can send some boys my way."

--"Confirmed, triangulating location, Location confirmed, dispatching additional units."

The Tech Con agent slowly craned her head at the bouncer, obscured by the truck, Callandra had reached for her own weapon, a plasma pistol tucked in the center console of the truck.

"Hey, I don't want trouble, and you don't want trouble, go back inside and I'll kindly pass on through. You want to make this worse I'll happily oblige." She shouted at the bouncer, while flipping a switch and toggling a small targeting joystick. A handful of clunking sounds echoed and a 38mm Fuel-Rod Cannon folded out from the bed of the truck, then swiveled over and bore aim at the lone bouncer.

"Don't say you haven't been warned."

"I am Nora Carroll, and this is my daughter, Leela. I am pleased to meet you, Mister Wolfinson. I'm also glad to hear Leela didn't cause you too much trouble the five seconds she was out of my sight."

Leela folded her arms and huffed stubbornly. Nora nudged her leg with an attempt at a nonchalant kick. With an audible, irritated groan, the teenager curtsied to the man. "I am very sorry," she said grudgingly, and only because her mother had been pushing her to do so.

Nora looked about the shop with a smile. "Oh. Perhaps you are new to the area? How convenie-" She was cut off harshly by the blaring techno music and an incredibly rudely spoken young woman. Nora frowned, but Leela seemed somewhat curious. They exchanged glances, then tried to do the same with Mister Wolfinson. They noticed yet another person join the scene as a door opened, revealing a dark skinned man. He seemed to be glaring at the woman.

And then guns were pulled.

Nora held fast onto Leela with a gasp, pulling her back. "My God!"

Phil, too, was distracted by the insanity suddenly erupting around them. Although somewhat nervous, he kept a cool head, taking Nora and Leela by their arms and gingerly guiding them toward the door. He fiddled with the keys for a moment, managed to get the proper one in the practically-antique lock, and turned it with an audible click.

A tiny bell above jingled its protest as Philius opened the door with more force than strictly warranted. He pulled the two ladies through, watching the scene outside with dismay, then closed the door, engaged the deadbolt, and looked above the shop window. He sighed his relief as he spotted the metal shutter and quickly pulled it down into place, the room suddenly quite dark.

Phil groped in the dark for a moment before locating and flipping the light switch. A single hanging bulb in the middle of the shop floor flickered on, almost reluctantly. Taking a few deep breaths to calm himself, he found a few chairs behind the checkout desk and pulled them nearer the lonely incandescent bulb.

Unable to suppress a nervous laugh, Phil waved to the seats in silent offer to his impromptu guests. "Ladies."

Nora let go a sigh once they were both inside, her chest heaving from a miniature panic from the events that transpired out in the street. She brought a hand up over her heart, closing her eyes. "My goodness, it's barely our second day here!" Her eyes flickered open to land on Mister Wolfinson. "What a brave and wonderful gentleman you are! I can't thank you enough for ushering us inside! That looked like gang activity."

"Gang activity!" exclaimed Leela excitedly. "How wo- I mean...what a shame. People should strive to be high-class citizens like ourselves more..." She nodded, then gave Mister Wolfinson a bright, fake smile. "But yes, yes. Thank you. I'd rather not bare a likeness to Swiss cheese."

Nora guided Leela over to the chairs, where they sat. "Have you been here long?" the older woman asked. "Does this happen very often?"

Philius assessed the two women more thoroughly. Despite his initial attraction to the fiery young woman, he quickly categorized Leela as a mad teenager, little better than a child, and prone to bad form at that. His gaze flicked now to Nora and his brief examination told him that she was a woman of eloquence, sagacity, and poise. He smiled at her, thoroughly charmed, and directed his words to her. "Unfortunately not."

His smile faltered as he indicated the room around him. The shop floor was empty, save a desk, a table, some shelves lining the walls, and the four chairs in evidence, all covered in a thin layer of dust. "I'd only just arrived arrived when your rather energetic child... made her introduction. My belongings haven't arrived, yet, but there is some basic furniture in the bedroom upstairs. You and your daughter are welcome to the bed if things don't calm down out there soon."

"As for the distasteful display going on out there, I saw no indication of gang presence when I came to look at the property." He brightens. "Ah, yes. I should explain. This is to be my shop, Epilogue Books. Do you read much, Madame Carroll?"

"We'd be grateful, thank you," said Nora, smiling thankfully at him. "Oh, don't apologize. It's all..." my husband's fault, "...part of moving to a new place!" Her smile tightened.

Leela crossed her arms, biting her lip. "Well, I don't think it's really as bad as you think! They probably just had a tiff. The guns weren't pointed at us."

Nora shot her daughter a look, eyes narrowing. Leela turned her nose up.

"Well...moving on. This is going to be a bookstore, is it? Lovely. I do love to read. Well, at least I know where I'll be coming when I'm looking for a good read."

Phil looked at Leela as though she'd said something profoundly insane. "Just had a tiff? There are plasma cannon pointed at a nearby pub. How is that at all acceptable?"

He quickly turned his attention back to Nora. "I, for one, am glad you've moved nearby. I didn't expect to make such agreeable acquaintances so quickly." His eyes met hers with admiration, then lit up with delight. "Madam. I don't suppose you'd consider starting a book club here. I just know that a woman of your obvious taste and breeding would draw other ladies of quality here, and it would mean we'd be free to enjoy each other's company more frequently."

"Perhaps that's how this place is! After all, they say when you're normally violent person, you're often very pleasant every other time, so I'm sure that woman has a wonderful personality on her best days," Leela stated with a grin.

Nora stared at her flatly. "You are not allowed to talk to Uncle Garrett anymore. He has gotten into that little head of yours."

She turned her attention to the bookstore owner, and she could not help but allow that same smile she'd given him earlier to become pleasant once more. It had a warm, inviting quality to it. "Why, you certainly understand how to speak well of your company. I am flattered. Yes, I think a book club would be lovely. It would help to get acquainted with others around the area, as well." She looked out toward the door. "Well. If they aren't assaulted every time they come around the area."

Leela sneered at the obvious going between the bookstore owner and her mother. She didn't particularly care for the romance between her mother and father, but seeing her with someone so much older than her, yet so much younger than her mother was...bothering.

Phil continued to smile at Nora, quite beyond being affected by Leela's insane comments, then looked around the book shop. "I wish I had some reading material to offer you for the duration of the evening." He perked up and began digging through his satchel. "You know, I really think this shop could be something. I need to find out a bit more about the area, but these woods definitely have a unique charm."

As he continued rifling, Phil pulled out a number of books with titles in English, French, Greek, and Latin, along with a few that didn't have titles on the covers. "I'll have to get an idea of what the folks around here like to read before I put any sizable orders to the distib- AH! Here it is." He pulled out an old hardcover with Latin on the spine. "Do you read Latin, madame?"

"Oh, if you want to know more about the area, you ought to know there are vampi-" Leela's sentence was cut short as her mother's hand planted firmly over her mouth. Through the whole action, Nora's expression did not change, and she kept her eyes on Mister Wolfinson.

"Not well. Though much of it has to do with Pramia's history- oh, Pramia is my home planet, apologies- I never did get the chance to learn very much." She paused as Leela clawed at her mother's hand, which was removed in a warningly slow manner. "What is this wonderfully aged book here?"

"I heard something about vampires in the area, yes. I was thinking I might keep the shop open overnight for them, but I'd have to hire an overnight person."

He held the book out to Nora. "Well, this one is is the collected works of Cicero, specifically his essays on friendship and civil service." Philius was clearly very excited about this as he looked at the cover, emphasizing the importance of it. "It's in the original Latin. Imagine reading his words directly from nearly two-thousand years ago!"
