Philius Percival Wolfinson

By all appearances, a lithe bibliophile and amature historian.

0 · 1,350 views · located in Epilogue Books

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Dignitas

Description

Physical description:
Philius is on the short side, 5'7, and appears to be in his late 20s or early 30s. He has wavy light brown hair that's just begun to thin on top. Despite a lithe wiry runner's build, he looks stronger. He owes his broad shoulders and barrel chest to his lineage, primarily subsistence farmers until two generations ago.

Personality:
He's generally quiet, though not necessarily shy, until he's discussing something he's genuinely enthused about. If this happens, good luck stopping him before he's managed to formulate a lesson plan and begin an impromptu class. He loves history, anthropology, speculative fiction, classic literature, ancient languages, and pretty much anything else that deals with the human condition but doesn't come near the realm of hard science.

Equipment: Tweed. A wooden pointer. Sweater vests. Bow ties. Antique spectacles. Books. Probably some medieval weaponry along with a rapier or two.

Abilities: Languages; lots of them. Enthusiasm. Martial skill. An intense gaze of disapproval. A stiff upper lip. Etiquette. Perhaps some book magic later in his story.

Historical Background:
A pretty standard middle-class upbringing with parents who felt the value of knowledge could never be overstated. Following this, a long stay in the tertiary education system, via grants and scholarships, to live as a full time student as long as he could manage it without touching too heavily on any sciences. Phil eventually decided to open a book shop and live above it in a small flat, as this came as close to his idea of heaven as he cared to dare for. Potential aspirations toward a career in professoring if the desire should strike him.

So begins...

"I'll get it, Mr. Garrett. No worries." Phil stood and headed toward the stairs to his living area. "Why don't I go get Mr. Garrett and myself some scotch, then you and I can begin a lesson. I'll need to get a sense of where your current level of proficiency is."

He ambled up the still-unfamiliar staircase (the steps in these old buildings tended to be tall and narrow due to space constraints), and shortly returned with two glasses sporting two fingers of scotch whiskey each. He put one down in front of Garrett, then took a generous sip of his. Despite the midday hour, Phil hadn't slept, and so felt justified indulging. A little tipple did tend to take the sting out of sleep deprivation. If consumed with sufficient leisure, it could even be done without putting oneself to sleep.

"So, Nora, is your knowledge mostly limited to vocabulary and common phrases, or do you have a grasp on some grammar?"

Garrett's demeanor lightened more, if that was possible, at the sight of the scotch. "Yer a good man, you are. The hosts of hosts-" He reached for his glass, holding it up to Phil briefly. "Cheers."

"I don't understand the grammar whatsoever. I stopped far before I got to that, ah...I can distinctly remember a good lot of vocabulary." She mused over it for a moment, fingers tapping on her lips.

Something, however... was absolutely demanding her attention. She could not believe she had not said or done anything about it beforehand. "Be...fore we get to that, actually, you look like you could use some help around here. You're just settling in, and so are we at the new house, but I'm sure you wouldn't mind a hand. We've got many servants who could come and help tidy things up."

Down the road a lone black rolls royce was seen driving up the cobbled street.

Following the brief exchange between Cally and Hark, some phone calls had been made, and the lone black car, which was flanked in front, and behind by black tinted black sedans.

"I understand there's been some unsavory characters in this neighborhood." The older man said as the car crept to a stop in front of the Gae-Cann Clubhouse and the bookstore nearby.

The older man produced a single gold Aureus, before he handed it to David.

"Go in there and do what needs to be done."

He lifted his glass in a return gesture to Garrett, but his attention was almost immediately consumed by the enchanting Nora offering to loan him servants.

"I... that is... a very generous offer, madame. I don't know how I could possibly repay such a kindness as I am obviously of humbler means. If you insist, however, I couldn't possibly decline. A good portion of my stock should be coming in from the distributors tomorrow and the upstairs flat is still quite dusty."

Phil slumped back into his chair, flabbergasted.

"Well, we have them to spare, and the house is nearly ready. After all, what could I do after your little heroic act? Leela and I might have been caught in that fire. I can...only imagine how terrible it would have been. I couldn't thank you enough, Mister Wolfenson." She said this genuinely, her expression becoming somber and drawn. "Helping you with the bookstore wouldn't even compete."

Garrett leaned back in his chair, having already finished his scotch. He looked into his glass, his expression distraught. He had not been listening at all. He had not noticed any tiny hints that Phil had put out about his infatuation, either.

"Hrm. What?" he piped, looking between them.

"Well, Nora. I..." Phil watched her eyes as she detailed the depth of her gratitude, then snapped out of his reverie and looked at Garrett with what he hoped was a comradely grin. "Just talking about servants. You know what? I think we need the rest of that bottle."

He rushed up the stairs and came back with a nearly full bottle of very nice single malt scotch, plunking it down and refilling both glasses. He left the bottle near Garrett in silent invitation, then picked up his drink, turning back to Nora. "Really, madame. What sort of animal would I have been to allow you to come to harm?"

He took a long pull from his glass, draining half, and relaxed somewhat, smiling contentedly.

Hark took up the book and opened it, eyeing the first chapter with amusement. "Nah, local motorcycle chapter friend." Hark gestured to the Harley attached to the roof with chains. "First chapter, original and the first, man." Hark threw down the whiskey and slammed the glass on the counter, tip down.

"We live here, just as everyone else does, we look out for each other, Phil. We're all in this shit together, that's what the Vankoryth taught us." Hark continued, grinning. "My bike was made in 1988, not far off in the production line of this here book. I might give it a read, thanks friend." Hark hefted up the book, flicked though the pages once more and slammed it on the counter.

"I've got a feelin' those fuckheads aren't done though. If it's one thing those outsider dickheads do, it's do things in the extreme."

"I should probably get going soon. I've a lot of work ahead of me and not a lot of sleep behind me, but if you really think they'll come back, why not set some traps for them? I mean, that truck was big, but what good would a plasma cannon do her if she wound up falling into a covered pit with molotov cocktails raining in from above?"

Phil sat down on one of the stools, giving the problem some thought.

Hark laughed and saluted the bartender with a mocking salute. "Show im'." The bartender nodded, stepping though the door blocking people from going behind the counter and pulling the rug away, shoving a key into the lock and yanking it open and gesturing inside with a middle finger. "We're more than prepared, Phil."

Hark refilled their drinks, slammed his down and walked over to the trapdoor, jumping down and pulling some form of rocket launcher from the bottom, patting the barrel and shoving a leg up on the grooves that held the trapdoor and throwing it back down.

"Not the first time we've had trouble here. Don't worry about it, Benji and his gang of ultimate bad-asses will protect you."

Phil's eyes were as wide as saucers. "That was... a rocket launcher. A giant gun... that shoots rockets. How often does this... I... should head home. This is a lot to think about. I should get a nap before Nora comes over. I mean... before I open the shop. Thank you again, Mr. Hark, and I will sleep easier knowing you fellows are here and keeping an eye out."

He got up and walked toward the door, looking a bit stunned by all the recent revelations regarding what he thought was just a sleepy little berg with some vampires running around.

"Why, wouldn't you be surprised at the selfishness of people with a statement like that. Back in Pramia it would have been brash of me to say such a thing, however, here in Terra..." Her eyes met the ground in a bit of a mourn, "...with all the violence that we've seen on the streets and all the horrible things I've been hearing about on the news and from the other locals..."

"Ain't nothin' a man can't take out with a pistol and a good aim, Nora!" said Garrett, jumping to comfort her distress. "Ain't no hoodlum gonna lay a finger on you." He grumbled and settled in his chair, finishing, already, his second glass.

Phil watched Garrett comfort Nora, still troubled by the pangs of jealousy he was experiencing. Not merely by the jealousy itself, but the fact that his grasp on it was so tenuous. He was accustomed to having a better handle on his emotions. He resisted placing a hand on her shoulder, not wanting Garrett to catch wind of Phil's infatuation, but he did lean in and speak quietly to her.

"Honoria Carroll. I promise you that as long as you are within the walls of this building, and I am here with you, you and any guests of yours, family or otherwise, will be kept safe." He gave her a serious look, possibly the most comber expression she'd seen him wear. "This I swear on my honor."

Nora brightened up some after Phil spoke. She beamed lightly, saying, "Thank you, Mister Wolfinson. That eases my heart remarkably."

Garrett let his eyes wander between the two. One of his thick, rectangular brows raised. The expression was very readable. What's going on here?

"Maybe we should be gettin' them servants over here t'clean the place up," he grumbled.

"All right." Philius got to his feet, intending to open the front door for his guests, and caught sight of the potential mess about to go down outside. He promptly pull the metal shutter down and locked the front door.

"On second thought... Right now might not be the best time. It looks like the bikers and Crazy Truck Harridan are about to have a final showdown, and I don't want to draw attention to the shop."

The two Carrolls stayed where they were as they heard the news. "Mister Woflinson, you might want to consider moving the shop already, I think...or getting some security," Nora suggested.

"It'll die down eventually. Criminals only like to flourish here durin' the day because of all the night life. Or...dead...night...life." He arched his eyes to the ceiling to contemplate this. Nora sighed. "Well, we'll just wait until it dies down. They don't seem at all interested in the bookstore so I think we'll be quite fine."

Phil strode quickly up the stair, then came back down holding an antique Lee-Enfield. "Just in case, wot." He sat down and laid the gun across the top of the desk.

"Would you two mind telling me more about these vampires? Do they keep to themselves and feed off willing thralls, or are they the rogue sort?"

Nora glanced over at the gun, nodding. Ah, yes, she was used to such weapons. In fact, in their current situation, it was a welcoming sight.

"The bloodsuckers? Guh-haha, they ain't no trouble, really. M'brother checked the place out real good before we moved. Y'get a murder here and there, but they's generally good folk. If you got some holy water and some silver...an' some garlic, maybe." Garrett shrugged. "It shouldn' be too hard, I would imagine. I been meanin' to check out the area for m'self, though. Make sure."

"Oh, I can assure you that I have all the necessary accouterments to deal with them. I hear they're a great market for buying and trading antique books, so I'm planning to keep the shop open for them. Might even hire one of the younger ones trying to build their library. Maybe they'll work for store credit."

He points to the glass case on the table. "That's over fifty-thousand dollars in paper sitting there."

"Well, alright. If y'ever got any need fer some firepower, though-" Garrett pat his revolver with a chuckle.

"That's impressive," said Nora to Phil, rising from her seat to make her way over to the glass case, peering into it. "Our home library is currently very...empty. My sister in law didn't want us taking very many of them, so we left it all behind in Pramia. I only got to take six of them for myself."

Garrett grumbled something, but mostly stayed quiet after Nora's statement.

"Mister Garrett. I hardly think I could trouble a distinguished gentleman, no matter how proficient he might be with a firearm, with simple guard duty at a book shop, no matter how valuable the tomes therein. Surely you'd be bored out of your mind."

Philius perked up immediately at Nora's words, and not, this time, simply because Nora was speaking them. He leaned forward, his eyes alight with curiosity. "Oh? Which did you bring? My knowledge is sadly lacking in Pramian literature."
