Rei Harkov

I've got a bad feeling about this...but a job's a job.

Description

Image

Full Legal Name: Reina Isolde Kurosawa Harkov
Aliases: Rei Harkov, Kurage
Occupation: Whatever pays the bills the best at the moment
Age: unknown
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 135 lbs
Eye Color: Blue/Green; unnatural, pale, chatoyant
Hair Color: Blue and Black
Build: Athletic
Race: Human (assumed)
Sex: Female

Preferring to dress in cargo pants, boots, t-shirts and a flight jacket. Function over form is what is most important to her.
Despite these ideals of dress, Rei wears fairly heavy makeup, which conceals a great deal and in some way alters her facial features. It is hard to determine just what the woman beneath the makeup actually looks like, and she goes to a great deal of trouble to keep it that way.

Piercings/Tatoos/markings
Scars - Faint scaring across knuckles from childhood; scar on right lower leg from incident while in military service
Tattoos - Left shoulder (sakura blossom in red ink w/ three graces in black ink surrounding it); left wrist (tribal, blue ink), coms bracelet covers it
Piercings - Right ear: Standard lobe, orbital, helix, and upper lobe
Left ear: Industrial, snug and orbital
Eye brow piercing over right eye.

Personality
Rei is mostly calm, cool and fairly collected. She can though lean towards the disturbed and unstable side of things. She knows who exactly her friends and enemies are; preferring to keep the latter closer in a multitude of perverse and demented ways. She is not afraid to double cross, back stab or do any manner of nasty things to close a deal, or prevent it from going sour. Her talents in negotiation were learned the hard way; out in the field.

Equipment
Isher Mk 3-5 Plasma Pistol
VanVogt Force Blade tucked into the right boot
Coms bracelet, manufacture unknown
Earpiece designed to feed direct images from mini-cameras jettisoned outside a ship and allows the user to communicate directly with a ship's AI without the use of a neural web.

The Ship
Rei's ship, Ghost Dance, is an usual specimen in of the fact that few of these ships, called lighthuggers, have been seen since the Great War of Magellan.

Sitting at 4 km long, the ship is capable of carrying vast amounts of cargo in it's holds and can allow for even greater numbers of passengers if need be. With it's Lockheed-Krunchev engines for propulsion, the ship is capable of extremely powerful bursts of acceleration (at least 10g without any inertial suppression systems) and at cruising between systems pulls 1g on average.
Thought to possess limited repair and redesign capability, these ships are generally coated with a thick layer of ice to use in defense against other ships and minor impacts from objects. However, despite this most of these ships are capable of moving machinery and rooms around within their hulls should their owner desire it, and possess a on-board manufacturing plant for repairs etc.

Weapons
Ghost Dance has relatively small point defense weapons, but they still pack quite a punch.
These weapons are able to blast a 200 km crater into a planet, disrupt weather, and potentially initiate geological events.

The A.I.
Specter is an alpha-level simulation and responsible for assisting Rei with running most of such a large ship. There is a large amount of controversy surrounding the Alpha-Levels, as they were once humans whose minds were scanned and then digitized; these individuals did not survive the process. They are fully self aware, and fully capable of remembering, learning and adapting.

Other Technology
Manufacturies for creating anything from weapons to furnishing rooms on ship.
Inertial Suppression
Cryo-Arithmetic Engines/Dark Drives - allows a ships engines and heat to decay through quantum mechanics and use of a miniature event horizon to make them indistinguishable from background space and temperatures and radiation
Camouflage Screens - stealth technology that further conceals the lighthugger from detection
Hyper Diamond hull - an material of extreme durability made of nanofiber tubules interwoven

History
Rei's largely divorced from baseline humanity, her background is a little murky if at all clear. She's thought to be the daughter of a Taiyou citizen, and a Russish generational ship passenger from a vessel that was originally launched from the Sol system; but she's neither confirmed nor denied these facts. What is known is that she speaks decent enough Taiyou that the local Yakuza have a desire to deal with her when anything out world or in system calls. Her dealings are thought to be fairly small time and innocent enough, an she has little desire to run into trouble with the local law; but has had a few close calls. Possessing excellent piloting, martial arts, and marksmanship skills, she appears to have even perhaps come from a military background. All this once again goes back to the fact that her past is murky, and not even the closest of her friends know the true story of who Rei Harkov is. As a well kept enigma, she is perfectly content to let people wonder.

So begins...

Rei Harkov glanced over at Same before returning her attention to the menu. "Already ordered, but thanks." She said as she took her drink from the robot and it's tray. "I doubt you have, seeing as I don't really frequent this place all that much." Rei lied. She was trying to avoid being recognized for much if anything. The lower the profile she kept, the more likely it would be that she would get off the current miserable dirt ball quickly.

Rei Harkov having completed the requested run to Niihama, with a rather touchy cargo, she was now back on Terra and anxious for more to do. Working for Sam had proved lucrative, if not fairly entertaining. But, getting back through customs was a bit more difficult. Passports and documents had to be forged again, and her laziness had gotten the better of her. The documents had been rather suspect to intense scrutiny from customs, and finally unable to find anything wrong had let her through. "What a mess..." Rei remarked noting the fire balls and gun fire being traded across the room, with a man quickly being helped out of the bar. "As usual.." She mumbled taking a seat.

Rei Harkov took a moment or two to decide on her order. It had been awhile since she'd been planet or dirtside. After all there were more pressing things to be done, like deliveries and making sure she got paid in full. That included socking it to her client for the prices of fuel, food, docking expenses, possible bribes to officials to get through customs, and of course her time. Maybe this was why she wasn't so terribly popular in certain markets, she knew how to squeeze money out of her clients. Looking over towards Valeria, she made her final decision on an order, "Can I get whiskey on the rocks?" She asked politely enough. Now was not the time to go looking for trouble, unless it found her; and then that would be a whole different issue.

Rei Harkov shook her head as she saw that most things had gone to automatic for the evening. "Eh well as long as I get the drink." She mumbled pulling out a cigarette and promptly lighting it from a lighter produced from somewhere within her jacket's many pockets. "Ah, good, good." She said mainly to herself as the servitor brought her her drink. Setting the cigarette down, she took a sip of her drink only to choke on it.

Amidst the coughing, and furious sputtering, she glanced over at Marlene and O'Bannon. She knew who he was talking about, but didn't dare say anything. What had Ari gotten herself into after she'd gotten kicked from the LDA? Rei had to wonder. Regaining her breath, she decided that she had never been ment to breathe alcohol, and had mostly used it as a diversionary tactic. Either to draw attention to herself as a clumsy fool, or drunkard.

Rei Harkov for the most part minded her own business and kept to herself. She was short on patience, and even shorter on sleep. Hopefully she would be able to finish a drink in the bar for once without being disturbed. Sure she saw Marlene, and knew who she was; but the information of retirement or rather dissolution was interesting and new for her. "Knew it couldn't last." She mumbled to herself as she took another sip of her drink. The Confederation had already had one civil war, so what was another? It didn't really matter to Rei anyways, there was always someone willing to help her pay her way through the galaxy. Either by smuggling them, or something else illicit and unsavory.

Rei Harkov shrugged at Marlene's comment. "Oh I highly doubt that Ma'am." She said boredly. The first step with this one would be to deny and deny. Never allowing Marlene to get anywhere close to the truth of the matter. Frankly, Rei was a bit nervous what the woman might do now that she was released from duty with the Confederation.

Rei Harkov pulled her heavy parka closer in against the cold Hadante night. 'This is going to go over well.. but...' She thought as she stepped out from the shadows. There would be fresh snow in the morning to cover the tracks, so that was a possible plus. "What're you doing with those two?" Rei questioned her voice cutting through the cold still air. It was all she could think of. Her face was mostly obscured by cold weather gear, a heavy hooded coat, muffler and goggles.

Rei Harkov chuckled slightly at the mention of food scraps. "Yes I'm searching for food like the rest of these bleedin' parasites... of course. Rei Harkov, at your service." She remarked making a slight mock bow towards Marlene. "Allow me to be blunt, I'm offering my help. At your current rate of pace, you will not make your way off this god forsake planet." Rei pointed out. Struggling with two of the prisoners would be difficult enough, but with the both of them incapacitated it was even worse.

Rei Harkov shook her head. But, it was a start for things. How many Marlene intended to save wasn't exactly clear, there were almost always casualty rates with operations like this one. "She's either got one hell of a plan, or has no plan at all." She mumbled as she glanced to the crosses and then went to do as instructed. The forceblade from her boot made quick work of the ties, and Rei soon had one more prisoner down. She was without the benefit of the power armor, simply having to rely on her own personal strength and endurance as she followed the footsteps left behind.

Rei Harkov considered her position as she trudged through the snow with the unconscious body of the prisoner. Marlene was essentially calling the shots for now, but she would try to remind her that time was short. Getting everyone off would prove difficult, if not impossible. "I doubt she'll even listen to me.." She mumbled thinking aloud as she reached the shack. Contemplating her options with the door, kicking it in would do no good, no would shoving her shoulder into it. "Guess we'll have to do this like normal people huh?" She commented to no one in particular shifting the weight of the prisoner so she could get the door open.

Rei Harkov shrugged as she set Chlumecky down gently, or as gently as she could. The bitter cold on Hadante numbed even the best prepared of people. "Dunno... ask the walking, talking robot." She mumbled as she went to stand next to the fire for a moment. Removing her heavy gloves, she allowed her hands to warm only slightly before putting them back on, hopefully before any distinguishing marks were noticed. "Right then.. more down there that need to be brought up." Rei remarked as she headed back for the door.

Rei Harkov looked ahead through her goggles at the blowing snow, trudging back towards the six others. "I have my reasons." She replied. Rei knew something was about to happen, and it would be best to side with the more reasonable party. Her motives at times were not always respectable, but this time she could see that perhaps accepting some job offers had been a bad move on her part. "Six would be three each, but it's not possible physically." Rei mumbled through what looked like a thick scarf wound around her face. She had infact, outfitted with slightly different cold climate gear, more suited for arctic than anything. The thick scarf around her face, took the cold air and warmed it as it went into her lungs, and the goggles cut glare; along with a few other high tech additions. Her boots and hooded parka kept the rest of her comfortably warm, with lighter weight insulating fibers.

Rei Harkov nodded. It was a unfortunate thing, but it was a casualty of the time they seemed to live in. In fact it almost seemed like a common occurrence now. Someone or some group got kidnapped by some guy wanting to make a point, half the group ends up dead, end of story. "I'll take the ones on the right you get the ones on the left?" She said pulling out the same thin monofilament blade she'd used earlier. It was obviously something that wouldn't be found in any Aschen weapon kit, it was too elegant, and too functional almost.

In a way Rei disliked the idea of having to deal with the dead bodies, it bothered her on some basic instinctual level. "How the hell do we manage this?" She muttered as she got to work cutting down the prisoners.

Rei Harkov just shook her head as she stopped her work, moving to cut down the two asian's. It seemed cruel to simply leave the dead up there, but time was short. "Are you certain that they will be able to make it that far?" Rei asked as she knelt in the snow to pick the older man up. "You seem to care about so little..." She mumbled. Marlene only was out to save one life, that was Drulovic's and her own.

Rei Harkov frowned beneath the layers of gear. "The Langaran Defense Agency is defunct. So what does that make you?" She asked as she followed behind Marlene. Rei knew the complete sordid details of this plan, she had been in the room when Marlene had come up with it. "Never mind." She added as she continued to trudge along the path. It was these very protocols that would not allow families closure, and to be able to bury a loved one. "Bloody fuckin' stupid if you ask me.. damned spooks."

Rei Harkov glanced down at the man for a moment. "A friend, you're on Hadante." She answered swallowing a nice long string of swears she would like to direct towards Marlene. That could come later, for now the prisoners needed to wait the coldest portion of the night out someplace warmer. 'Keep orderin' me around like a fuckin' pissant lady and you'll do best to forget I said I'd help, stupid bitch.' Rei thought irritably. Marlene was getting ahead of herself, and forgetting that Rei did not have the same capabilities as she did.

Rei Harkov pointed at Marlene for a moment before responding. "Something I'm guessing to do with Gautrau, and the Terran's sent her. I'm just an minor aid along the way." She answered patiently enough. "Ask the walking, talking, robot these question's. I can't really answer them." Rei added boredly as she trudged through the arctic night. In all honesty she was starting to think that this was a bad idea on her part, Marlene hadn't really desired the help. Setting the man down once in the shack, Rei made it a point to stay far, far out of the way. Slipping back outside, she left Marlene to whatever it was she was doing.

Rei Harkov had taken up a spot in the lee side of the building, fairly out of the wind and lit up a cigarette. Turning slightly to Marlene, with her profile only slightly visible with the light leaking out from the shack, she considered a answer carefully, "Actually, yeah... a lift'd be nice." She remarked as she stubbed out the cigarette on her boot.

Rei Harkov frowned slightly as she watched an inordinate amount of patrons begin to flee the bar. "What's all this now?" She commented mainly to herself as she opened the door to the bar. With red fog pouring out the door as she stood there, Rei quickly realized what the cause was. 'Pepper bomb.' She thought sourly as she began coughing with the irritant entering her system. "Damned aschen..." Rei muttered as she held her hand over her face. So much for a drink, the bar was chaos now.
