Rei Harkov

I've got a bad feeling about this...but a job's a job.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Absenthia

Description

Image

Full Legal Name: Reina Isolde Kurosawa Harkov
Aliases: Rei Harkov, Kurage
Occupation: Whatever pays the bills the best at the moment
Age: unknown
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 135 lbs
Eye Color: Blue/Green; unnatural, pale, chatoyant
Hair Color: Blue and Black
Build: Athletic
Race: Human (assumed)
Sex: Female

Preferring to dress in cargo pants, boots, t-shirts and a flight jacket. Function over form is what is most important to her.
Despite these ideals of dress, Rei wears fairly heavy makeup, which conceals a great deal and in some way alters her facial features. It is hard to determine just what the woman beneath the makeup actually looks like, and she goes to a great deal of trouble to keep it that way.

Piercings/Tatoos/markings
Scars - Faint scaring across knuckles from childhood; scar on right lower leg from incident while in military service
Tattoos - Left shoulder (sakura blossom in red ink w/ three graces in black ink surrounding it); left wrist (tribal, blue ink), coms bracelet covers it
Piercings - Right ear: Standard lobe, orbital, helix, and upper lobe
Left ear: Industrial, snug and orbital
Eye brow piercing over right eye.

Personality
Rei is mostly calm, cool and fairly collected. She can though lean towards the disturbed and unstable side of things. She knows who exactly her friends and enemies are; preferring to keep the latter closer in a multitude of perverse and demented ways. She is not afraid to double cross, back stab or do any manner of nasty things to close a deal, or prevent it from going sour. Her talents in negotiation were learned the hard way; out in the field.

Equipment
Isher Mk 3-5 Plasma Pistol
VanVogt Force Blade tucked into the right boot
Coms bracelet, manufacture unknown
Earpiece designed to feed direct images from mini-cameras jettisoned outside a ship and allows the user to communicate directly with a ship's AI without the use of a neural web.

The Ship
Rei's ship, Ghost Dance, is an usual specimen in of the fact that few of these ships, called lighthuggers, have been seen since the Great War of Magellan.

Sitting at 4 km long, the ship is capable of carrying vast amounts of cargo in it's holds and can allow for even greater numbers of passengers if need be. With it's Lockheed-Krunchev engines for propulsion, the ship is capable of extremely powerful bursts of acceleration (at least 10g without any inertial suppression systems) and at cruising between systems pulls 1g on average.
Thought to possess limited repair and redesign capability, these ships are generally coated with a thick layer of ice to use in defense against other ships and minor impacts from objects. However, despite this most of these ships are capable of moving machinery and rooms around within their hulls should their owner desire it, and possess a on-board manufacturing plant for repairs etc.

Weapons
Ghost Dance has relatively small point defense weapons, but they still pack quite a punch.
These weapons are able to blast a 200 km crater into a planet, disrupt weather, and potentially initiate geological events.

The A.I.
Specter is an alpha-level simulation and responsible for assisting Rei with running most of such a large ship. There is a large amount of controversy surrounding the Alpha-Levels, as they were once humans whose minds were scanned and then digitized; these individuals did not survive the process. They are fully self aware, and fully capable of remembering, learning and adapting.

Other Technology
Manufacturies for creating anything from weapons to furnishing rooms on ship.
Inertial Suppression
Cryo-Arithmetic Engines/Dark Drives - allows a ships engines and heat to decay through quantum mechanics and use of a miniature event horizon to make them indistinguishable from background space and temperatures and radiation
Camouflage Screens - stealth technology that further conceals the lighthugger from detection
Hyper Diamond hull - an material of extreme durability made of nanofiber tubules interwoven

History
Rei's largely divorced from baseline humanity, her background is a little murky if at all clear. She's thought to be the daughter of a Taiyou citizen, and a Russish generational ship passenger from a vessel that was originally launched from the Sol system; but she's neither confirmed nor denied these facts. What is known is that she speaks decent enough Taiyou that the local Yakuza have a desire to deal with her when anything out world or in system calls. Her dealings are thought to be fairly small time and innocent enough, an she has little desire to run into trouble with the local law; but has had a few close calls. Possessing excellent piloting, martial arts, and marksmanship skills, she appears to have even perhaps come from a military background. All this once again goes back to the fact that her past is murky, and not even the closest of her friends know the true story of who Rei Harkov is. As a well kept enigma, she is perfectly content to let people wonder.

So begins...

Rei Harkov coughing and hacking on the gas in the bar she struggled to breathe in the oppressive atmosphere. "Need more air.." She muttered stumbling back out of the bar. Eyes, throat and nose burning like they'd been set on fire, Rei began to gulp in large mouthfuls of air; dirty, stinking and polluted as it was. What could you expect in a city?

Rei Harkov groaned slightly as she dug for a handkerchief to wipe her face with. "Bloody hell that burns.. and it wasn't a direct hit." She gasped finding what she was looking for in her jacket pocket. "Stupid Aschen always bombing people with pepper grenades.. or whatever they called the shit.." Rei grumbled as she pushed herself off the building where she had been leaning, trying to decide if she wanted to go back in or not. For now with the absence of red fog pouring out from under the door, Rei decided it must be safe to go back into what might be left of the bar.

Rei Harkov took a glance around the bar, and noticed a slow metallic type buzz. "Shit..." She commented as she noticed the neural suppressant worn as a pin on her jacket fried. This was going to make her night a bit more difficult. "It would pick now to malfunction.." Rei grumbled. It was simply a method to keep her from pinging on Aschen devices, and so far it had worked. But now, something had either caused it's circuits to over load or it had just decided to fail prematurely. Either way she felt screwed in some vague sense.

Rei Harkov said nothing to Marlene, and instead tried to busy herself with examining the scorched mark on her jacket, and now defunct pin. 'I must done something to over load it.' She thought to herself setting the pin down. Though she did wonder why Marlene was in military dress, that didn't fit. "Raid." Rei finally said bluntly in response to the question.

Eyes still watering, she punched the button for a drink and shook her head at the noisy group of patrons. One screaming something about toilet paper, and a explosion resulting only moments later. "Idiots.." She muttered.

Rei Harkov cringed slightly as Marlene sent a feedback wave towards Dyew. "This is not going to turn out well.." She mumbled reaching slowly for her plasma pistol at her side. She quite didn't know what to think of this turn of events, except that nothing good was going to happen. It looked as if the government had some how determined how to amplify Marlene's abilities; and not in the best way.

For the moment Rei panicked, remembering that her suppressor had bit the dust only minutes ago. She did not care to be a target for a pissed off sibling, or a cocky, over confident one either. For now though, it seemed that Marlene was going to ignore the fact she was there, and she wouldn't have to end up in another fight.

Rei Harkov groaned inwardly as she recognized the wording Marlene had chosen to use. "Ori... how the fuck?" She muttered withdrawing her plasma pistol. "Hey idiot... I wouldn't recommend you start this here and now." Rei commented drawing a bead on the two of them standing there. The pistol began to emit a slight whine as it charged, waiting for her to fire. "Miss Angel, put the man down." Rei commented before squeezing off a shot at the woman.

But this was before the time dilation and manipulation were brought into effect. Rei began to feel as if she were moving through syrup, reflexes slowing, and speed greatly diminished. "Not good!" She thought trying to think of an out to a bad situation growing worse.

"Well that was anti climatic." Rei remarked as she holstered her pistol. Maybe now she could actually enjoy a drink without the risk of being harassed by one party or the other. Though to be honest, it would result in a rather dull evening. Shrugging she reached to pick up her drink, and take a sip. Marlene wasn't her problem, at least right now the woman seemed more interested in other things anyway.

With the advent of the Aschen Empire and the associated entourage in the government, it had become quite profitable to smuggle various illicit substances onto Langara and subsequent payments off world again. However, it wasn't easy to get past the orbital defenses or even down onto the surface of the planet. There were ways to be had, and Rei knew there was always the possibility that someone might leave a back door open for someone to slip through. The riots in the streets hadn't exactly been planned, and as Rei skirted a few cranky cops, she made what hopefully would be a clean exit from Caprica City, and the planet.

But, the best laid plans of mice and men were said to oft go awry, or at least that's what she remembered the old saying being. "The fuck??" She said to no one in particular as she noticed the low flying ship above the city. The low, deep and throaty, vibrating hum that resonated throughout her whole body couldn't be missed. "Why would a--" Rei asked herself staring up at the ship for a minute before the reason clicked deep within the recesses of her drug addled and adrenaline fueled brain. "Oh shit!" was all she could really muster as she started running, looking for the nearest safe looking structure to duck or dive into.

Luck was on her side fortunately as she came upon what she hoped was a civil defense bunker, with a set of stairs leading downwards into inky black darkness. Rei briefly wondered how many other citizens would be smart enough to use it, and how many would she have to contend with? Those two questions would have to wait while she found a way to get into the bunker. "Better now than dead!" She said cheerfully to herself as she took the stairs two at a time downwards, while thinking a light might be a nice thing to have.

Rei found the bunker easy enough to get into, that was if you had the right sort of tools and knew where to look. "Lights.. lights would be good.." She said absently digging in her pockets in the pitch black for anything of use.

Though Rei Harkov and many others had the luck, or simply the foresight of taking shelter within the defensive bunkers before the nuke had detonated within Caprica City, many had been less fortunate. It wasn't until after the detonation that others began to flood into the bunker that Rei had taken shelter within.

Bearing uniforms that marked them as Aschen Marines, the new arrivals were clearly militant in nature and burdened heavily with wounded. The team had been fortunate to be located on the outskirts of the blast, but caught out in the open they had sustained heavy damage.

Rei and the scattering of civilians who had already taken shelter within the bunker were ushered out of the way as wounded men and women were helped inside.

"Colonel? Colonel Bennet?" a man's voice spoke up over the pained groans that filled the room. "Colonel can you hear me?" The woman he spoke to was in shock and had a ragged piece of metal lodged deeply into her side. "Stay with us Colonel," the soldier said as he looked around. Settling his gaze on Rei he gestured to her. "You there, come stay with her. Keep her conscious, and don't let her try to take that out."

The man moved off already barking orders at the other marines that were still on their feet.

“Do I look like a fuckin’ medic?” Rei said grumpily. She wasn’t terribly happy with being pressed into service of the Aschen military yet again. She’d done her damnedest to stay as clear as possible over the last few decades, and liked to keep it that way. “Keep ‘er conscious.. don’t let ‘er talk… bla bla bla…” She muttered mocking the man behind his back as he left.

“Well missy, looks like I’m to be your new pal, or so says Captain grumpy over there.” Rei commented jerking her thumb over her shoulder at the man who had volunteered her for the unwanted job. Squatting down by Colonel Bennet, she just shook her head. “You Aschen sure are damned good at getting in trouble, or maybe I should say you’re good at pissing off just the right person… I don't know.” She couldn’t help making a few snide remarks; the filter between the brain and mouth wasn’t exactly present most days.

Looking at the hunk of metal lodged in the woman’s side, Rei let out a low whistle. “You know lady I’m amazed your not dead yet.”

Rei certainly had a way with words around the wounded, a fact that Shannon might have noted with some measure of wry amusement had she not been the one on the floor. Her skin was pale and slick with sweat as she stared up at the ceiling overhead.

"What happened," Shannon asked between pained breaths.

The Coalition? No how could they have gotten this far into Aschen space without word reaching the ground troops.

She raised a hand to her brow only to pull it away as she felt the split skin of a gash over her eye. Laying her hand back down at her side, she decided it best to just not try to move.

Rei offered a slight shrug to Shannon as she eased herself down onto the cold, concrete floor of the bunker. "Don't know. All I know is some genius tried to fly a ship in the atmosphere... I think. Maybe they dropped a bomb, but I really don't know. Besides, I thought you military types knew everything." She replied crossing her legs and leaning over Shannon.

Badly injured was probably the understatement of the year, from what she could tell, most of the woman's wounds should have led to fatal blood loss or at least shock leading to death. "That," Rei said pointing to the large wound in Shannon's side. "Will eventually have to be fixed. So, lets just hope Captain Grumpy comes back with a real medic." She finished knowing that any sort of interference on her end would cause an inordinately large amount of trouble.

Rei frowned listening to Shannon. The woman was fairly bad off, and to her it looked like they were just content to write her off as a casualty of whatever this latest incident was. "Rei." She answered deliberately giving an extremely shortened version of her name.

Nodding, Rei didn't see the two meeting up again any time soon. "I'll take you up on that then." She replied trying to seem polite enough. In reality all she really care about was getting off world before someone discovered she wasn't supposed to be there.

Rei was mostly silent on the subject of family. "Uh... that depends on who you call family." She answered finding the question difficult. She'd been estranged from most of the family for years, and really didn't see any of it changing. No one particularly cared what she did, unless it made their lives the least little bit uncomfortable.

"I did, but.. we don't talk anymore." Rei explained leaving her answer once again intentionally vague. "Where's Captain Grumpy with a medic when you need one?" She muttered briefly wondering how much trouble she'd be in if she at least kept the other woman from dying. "You never said anything about you, you keep asking about me."

Rei raised an eyebrow at Shannon's comment about not having much to say. "Funny thing to hear from someone who's so curious about their assigned babysitter." She remarked noting the extreme shortness of breath and inability to focus that Shannon possessed. 'This is going to get me in so much trouble...' Rei thought to herself as she watched in horror as the woman's head lolled off to one side. "Hey, hey... look at me!" She said with slight panic knowing from personal experience just how little sense the Aschen possessed when it came to assigning people to keep track of the injured, especially an officer judging by the woman's uniform.

"Oh fuck me... if you croak I croak." Rei muttered taking a quick survey of the injuries. This was a situation of self preservation, necessarily something done out of the goodness of her heart. Checking Shannon's pulse, she found it to be faint and thready, with it possibly growing worse with each passing moment. "No sign of Captain Grumpy Pants..." She said to herself as looked at the large hunk of metal protruding from Shannon's side, and pulled.

Shannon didn't so much as stir as the metal was jerked free from the flesh. It would seem the object was all that was keeping the officer from bleeding out sooner and the blood welled from the ragged wound alarmingly to further soak her uniform. Her ashen skin was swiftly taking on an alarming chalky hue, and her lips were growing blue.

Trying to hide how panicked she felt, and probably looked, Rei tossed the piece of metal aside with a clang against the cold concrete floor of the bunker. She briefly wondered just how far back the bunker went, and if they were possibly connected to any sort of tunnel system; she'd have to find out once her business here was finished. "Okay, deep breaths and stay calm." She said mostly to herself than Shannon as she put her hand over the gushing wound.

Taking a deep breath, and letting it out slowly, Rei concentrated on the wound in Shannon's side; and having only done this once or twice, it wasn't exactly something that came easy to her. There was massive devastation to the surrounding tissues, and an enormous amount of blood loss. A gentle white light bathed the wound as Rei stopped the bleeding, and encouraged the tissues to begin to repair themselves. The wound in Shannon's side was much more important than the gash across her head, or any other bruises the woman might have had. Leaning back after she finished she waited only moments to see if Shannon would come around.

The process had made her tired, weak, and she more than likely had taken on Shannon's own wound temporarily. Despite all this she made it her number one priority to make herself scarce by doing what she'd been explicitly told not to do, leave. Rei knew there would be a price of some sort to pay for her actions, self serving or not.

Rei tried to keep a low profile while in the Space Port, the last time she'd made herself conspicuous on Terra she'd gotten more trouble than she'd bargained for. Bar brawls, and threats of arrest were not her idea of a good time dirtside, despite how much fun Monkeh tried to convince her they were. Slipping through the crowds with practiced ease, Rei mainly went unnoticed until a slight argument with a hovercart and it's owner. The cart managed to knock her, and her pack sprawling onto the hard, slick floors of the terminal. "Watch it lady! Damned Taiyou..." The cart owner grumbled looking at the toppled cases from his cart, some opened with their contents spilled and broken on the floor.

Muttering and grumbling, Rei got to her feet, shooting the man a dirty look. "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.." She said dryly while looking for her pack which wasn't far off. "Is that so?" The man replied watching Rei. "Who's going to pay for all this? Hm?" He asked puffing himself up like he was ready to fight if it came down to that. "Well..." She began now paying attention to what had been in the carefully stacked, and locked cases. Apparently the man had been attempting to smuggle, and rather poorly, an assortment of rare protected ivories, and vials of who knew what. "Well what?!" The man demanded who was very small in stature compare to Rei who seemed like a veritable giant next to him. "You've got bigger problems!" She shouted as she swooped up her bag and made a mad dash down the corridor. Rei saw security coming before he did, and didn't want to get mixed up in the mess.

"What is it with this god damn place?!" She bemoaned heading for the one place security tended to avoid, the bar.
