“I’m not going back,” Rescha said while tilting her chin up as if to hold onto some lingering pride or dignity. “I can take care of myself just fine. I don’t have to follow you. I know which direction the city is in and that’s where I am going,” Rescha said, making up the words as she spoke. That wasn’t really her plan but after saying it, it didn’t seem like such a bad idea. Not like she had anywhere else to go either.

“B-But before you go
I wanna say I’m,” Rescha started but paused with hesitation, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean what I said back there, really. I wanted to make you angry because I wanted you to leave. If you left
”

Rescha shifted her weight onto her good foot before continuing, “If you left then it meant that you weren’t going to die. I knew that if you got angry enough and if I got angry at you, then maybe you would leave. You would be safer if you left, and now you’re leaving.”

“I wasn’t going to watch you die, Kam,” Rescha said before beginning to walk off.

“Kam,” Rescha called after him, not moving an inch after he had, “you could come with me, you know
to Wing City, or Solinus City. We would have a better chance at getting out of the forest if we stuck together for at least that long. I’m not saying stay with me forever, but just long enough to get back on the roads at least
”

It was feeble attempt to gain his company back, but Rescha did not care. She did not care how low she had to stoop in order to get her friend back. Moments like this one were hard on anyone; the fork in the path of a person’s life. Either they were going to travel down the path together or separately.

“
and I can teach you how to shoot but I’m not even sure how I knew how to do it myself. But if you still want to go, then fine. You were always my friend though and always will be, Kam.”

“I’m not going to go back and get my crutches and the medicine is in my bag,” Rescha said looking at Kamala. If she went back into the barracks then he would have a chance to get away from her. Rescha wasn’t going to let that happen if she could help it.

“I-I’ll take the pills but I won’t go back. We’ve already stepped out of the door, why not keep walking? Everyone is probably awake and knows we’re out here right now, Kam. What’s going to stop them from punishing us as soon as we step foot in the barracks again?”

Inhaling a long breath of air, Rescha attempted to steady her pounding and nervously beating heart before beginning to walk away from Kam.

In the end, Rescha realized that he was either going to follow or not. It was only torture to put off his ultimate decision.

Rescha’s limp had gotten a bit worse and she dared not remove her boot after having put it on. It was tight around her ankle, more than it should be. “I’m fine,” Rescha lied, “and my crutches would have only slowed us down. We’re at edge of the forest so it won’t be as hard now, I guess.” Rescha dropped her bag onto the ground and then squatted down to rummage through it.

She pulled out a bottle of water and made way for Kamala. She handed it to him before sitting down right in front of him. “Here, drink that and take these too,” Rescha said, handing him two of her pain pills.

Rescha took the bottle of water and sighed when the pill was handed back to her. She didn’t want to take it but the girl had promised Kamala that she would. Rescha didn’t want him leaving, not when they had made it this far and while he was actually talking to her.

“Fine. Alright,” she said a little upset before she popped the pill in her mouth and then took a few swallows of warm water. Screwing the cap back on the bottle, Rescha set it aside and looked at Kam.

“So, what do you plan on doing when you get into the city?”

The young woman was about to answer Kamala before her ears caught the sound of a helicopter. Rescha’s eyes locked onto Kamala’s and her heart started racing in her small chest. She closed her mouth and then scrambled for her ruck sack still filled with mandatory equipment. Fumbling through some clasps, and tugging a long, plastic, poncho out from a pocket. It was camouflage printed and may help to hide them both; a petite as Kamala and Rescha were.

Rescha mistook a step and went sprawling onto the ground but she scrambled the rest of the way until she was practically tangled in Kamala’s limbs. “Fix it, put it over us, it may be someone looking for us, right,” Rescha said while attempting to get the large poncho to cover them both.

Sure, it could hide them, but Rescha did not realize that her pack was just sitting there, able to be seen and recognized if someone looked through the trees at the right angle.

“Don’t be so stupid, Ka—“ Rescha had started to say while her hand made to snatch at his clothes. The girl ended up growling at him in frustration beneath her breath and missing the hem of his pants by a half-inch. Why does he always have to be so stubborn, Rescha thought to herself.

Holding the poncho closed, Rescha shuffled off toward a cluster of bushes, all the while muttering words beneath her breath. Maybe it was just a false alarm, she wondered. Perhaps it was just a passing helicopter for the news or for the weather, maybe even the hospital.

Laying under the bush with her poncho and foot throbbing in pain, Rescha just closed her eyes and waited for the helicopter to pass.

It didn’t take two seconds before Rescha’s head popped up from beneath the poncho and she looked at Treia. There could have easily been someone else with him but thankfully there was not.

“Treia, shh, go away,” Rescha said in a quiet voice, “Go away or you’ll get into trouble too.” The woman waved her hand about as it attempting to push him over and send him off from where he had come, even if she was several feet away from him.

Injured. Injured. Injured.

It was as if they thought that Rescha was good for nothing because she couldn’t walk. Did they not realize she didn’t want to be hurt, that she would have given anything to have been able to run instead of limp through the woods toward the city? If not for her foot, Rescha and Kamala may have very well made it into the city already.

Her hand reached out for the bag and Rescha pulled it under her belly while staring at them both. It was then that her eyes caught moment, and the young woman pulled the camouflage poncho back over her head to hide.

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. Rescha had to sneeze. Something was making her nose itch and it was terrible. She was trying to keep her breathing even and focus just on that alone. It made her eyes water and sting along with her nasal passage.

For a simple person like Rescha, it was very difficult to not move but she could hear voices. Voices that were not Kam or Treia now.

[i[Go away, go away, go away[/i], she thought to herself, shutting her eyes even more tight.

Rescha felt as if her chest were going to explode. She took in a quick, silent, breath of air and held it for as long as she could. Tears were being squeezed from between her eyes and down her cheeks from the sheer effort. If only they would all go away then she would be able to freely sneeze to her heart’s content.

“Why won’t they go—oh no, oh no, oh no,” Rescha continued to think to herself over and over again.

Rescha had been uncovered and she could only make a split second decision, the only one that was opened to her. Without even glancing toward Kamala, the woman scrambled onto her hands and feet and started to run.

She ran as fast as her injured foot would carry her, feeling only a throb of pain in her foot from the pill taken. Her heart raced in the confines of her chest but Resha knew that her running would draw the attention off of Kamala.

At least he’d be able to get away.

There came a horrible snapping sound in Rescha’s ears before her foot gave out. The girl tumbled to the ground and hands were scraped against harsh bark of the trees’ roots. Rescha released a muffled cry and clenched her jaw tightly together so as to not make too much sound.

Her hands clawed at the decaying leaves and damp earth as if Rescha were going to crawl the rest of the way.

All the while she hoped that Kamala got away.

“Treia, no
don’t,” Rescha said in protest as he picked her up, “Let me go. I don’t want to go back! You can’t make me go back and I don’t want to hurt you
please Treia.” There was no way that Rescha was going back so that she could die.

“Treia
please,” Rescha said, looking at him with her pleading eyes as her hands clung to the fabric of his shirt.

“I don’t want to go back. I want to stay with Kam.”

Rescha didn’t say a word after that. She became nothing more than a body with no voice and that cried silently, sitting in the chopper.

Rescha stared at Kamala’s back, fearing that he was still angry with her. More than once she had opened her mouth to start explaining and apologizing or whatever need be in order to make things okay between them again. She was growing frustration with the situation and began to wonder if she had dealt with it the right way. Never before had Rescha need to think so hard about everything. Ever since Kamala came into her life, things were just so complicated!

It was hard having friends and wanting to protect them, even harder to keep them after trying to protect them the wrong way. Rescha had pushed him away but now she wanted nothing more than to have him close.

She sped up a little bit in order to catch up with Kamala, who was ahead of her solely due to him not being the one limping with each step. Pain throbbed in her ankle and her boot was becoming more tight than it should be.

“Kam ...” Rescha said in her small voice, hoping that he would hear her and half-hoping that he didn’t. She wasn’t even sure what she was going to say to him. Rescha sighed and pretended to be interested in where her feet were going.

“I—I ... no, you’re not going too fast,” Rescha said in her submissive tone. Not having looked up, the girl ran straight into Kamala and immediately apologized. His ribs must have been hurting him a great deal since they had been walking for over an hour now. Rescha bit down on her lip and looked back down at the ground, half-turning away from Kamala.

“I really am sorry ... for everything. I didn’t mean those words and I like you being around,” she began while her brow knitted together tightly, “I only said those things because I was scared, you know?” And when Rescha was frightened, her common sense usually flew out the window.

“It was really hard to say all those awful things and to ruin your stuff. I knew I had to make you angry though or else you would just laugh at me for telling you to leave. You wouldn’t have left because you want to go back to college and stuff ...”

Rescha’s mouth opened and then closed. It was hard for her to remember to think before she said something but the girl was being extra careful around Kamala now. Things were pretty ruined between them and she didn’t want to make it worse. The last thing Rescha wanted was to lose a good friend.

“Kam are—are we ... are we okay? I mean, you’re still my friend ... right ... ?” It was a hard question to ask but Rescha had found the courage to do so anyway. It was going to eat her up inside if she hadn’t and left herself to wondering if they still were or not. Her hand reached out for him but Rescha pulled it away, not sure if touching him was a good idea. Especially right then for it appeared that Kamala just wanted to be left alone.

It sounded almost as if he didn’t want to talk to her at all, and was just being nice in responding to her.

“I mean ... if we’re not ...” Rescha didn’t finished the what she was going to say. She was scared what Kamala was going to say.

“... Kamala,” Rescha said before she reached out to grab his hand. Her grip was light and she only caught some of his fingers. It wouldn’t be hard for him to pull his hand away but she wanted him to stop and look at her. Kamala wouldn’t be able to see it, but she was close to tears.

“Just stop for a moment, please. I think we ... need to really talk. You’re acting all strange and I know it’s my fault. I want to fix us ...” Rescha pleaded trying so hard not to cry in front of him again. He must have thought her pathetic with how she always came to Kamala with her problems: the dark, Thomas, not knowing how to use a weapon, everything.

“You keep sayin’ that everything’s okay but you’re not acting like it is. You don’t even talk to me unless I talk to you first ... I don’t know what to do, Kam.”
