“I’m not trying to make you hurt worse, I’m trying to get … hng … something out of my pocket,” Rescha said while finally feeling her fingers dig out the pills the medic had tried to give her. He had not been too impressed on the fact that Rescha did not want to take any pills at all even when her ankle had swollen to the size of a grapefruit.

Rescha finally settled down and then shoved her bangs out of her eyes before wrapping her pinky around Kam’s. “I pinky promise. I won’t tell anyone about the promise or how we made it,” Rescha said before letting his finger go and she made the familiar gesture over her chest, “Cross my heart and hope to die.”

“And here,” the young woman said before feeling around for wherever Kam’s hand and gone and grabbed it up. Both of her hands opened his palm and she set the pills in Kam’s hand.

“The medic tried to give them to me for the pain but I didn’t want to take them. I-I don’t … I don’t like taking pills. He said they were vitamins … vicodcans … something like that. I’m not sure,” Rescha admitted.

“You should take them so I don’t have to take them. If the medic knew that I didn’t, he’ll be so mad at me so I don’t want to get caught with them. They need to disappear.”

“No I don’t want them,” Rescha said to Kam’s question. There was nothing in the world that could make her take pills. Not even a life and death situation. “I am one-hundred percent sure that I want you to have them. You tried to save me when I fell down that hole. That was a nice thing to do, Kam,” Rescha said taking her gaze away from his outline. That was a bit embarrassing to admit.

Just as was Kam’s confession for his fears.

“Aww c’mon, Kam,” Rescha said trying to hold back a giggle. After saying what she was scared of to him, spiders and heights were nothing for Rescha. “Heights and spiders are not that scary. You can squish a bug and its gone forever. Heights just make you feel like you’re flying, like we did yesterday. That was really awesome and I wouldn’t mind doing it again. I had always wanted to grow wings and fly away. I didn’t get the wings, but I did get to fly.”

Rescha was grinning from ear to ear, pleased with that thought. A satisfied sigh came from her lungs and then Rescha said, “Go ahead, take the pills, Kam.”

Rescha had laughed quietly as Kam told his ‘story’. He was silly. A brave man wouldn’t be scared of little spiders.

“It’s okay, Kam. You protect me from the dark and I will protect you from the spiders. And you can take both of the pills. I don’t want them or need them. The pain isn’t that bad. Only when I walk and we can choose to go on missions right? I just won’t go on a few of them,” Rescha said feeling her tiredness creep back into her eyes. A dull headache was settling on the top of her head too but she ignored that as well. Rescha was always good at ignoring pain.

Not even asking this time, Rescha curled up against Kam and rested her head on his shoulder. It didn’t look like she was going anywhere, any time soon, and Kam was just stuck with the girl for now.

Rescha has missed the call for chow but it was only for the fact she did not get much sleep that night either. It had also taken her a long time to get back from a Sick Call appointment. The stupid doctors had put the young woman on crutches, claiming a fracture was in her foot.

After struggling to get through the doors with newly acquired equipment, Rescha made her way through the mess hall looking for the lieutenant.

“Lieutenant! Lieutenant!” Rescha called and when she spotted him, the young lady hobbled her way over.

“Lieutenant, so I was thinking,” Rescha started out not bothering to realize that he may have been in a conversation beforehand. She had something important to tell him. After having spoken with Kam early that morning, she had finally made up her mind.

“I want to train to be a sniper. I don’t want to be useless anymore.” There was determination in Rescha’s expression but there was also fear. All the men around her might have broken into laughter or they may have just rolled their eyes, but Rescha didn’t care about their judgments. She shifted her crutches beneath her arms.

“Shut up, stop calling me names,” Rescha said to the guy who had rudely called her ‘crutches’. That was annoying. She had a name and he could have asked for it. There was no way he was going to learn what it was now.

Rescha’s eyes looked around the room and she found herself not wanting to be there. Kam wasn’t there but Treia was … Nodding to her commander, Rescha crutched herself over to Kam’s bunk mate and leaned on her supports.

“Hey, how’re you doing after last night?”

Rescha was already outside resting her chin on her crutches. The young woman sighed and then flicked her eyes down to her foot. She hoped that it healed soon so Rescha could be trained. Right now the woman felt useless and a little depressed.

In a fit of anger, Rescha grabbed up one of the crutches and threw it as far as she could … all of two feet from her.

Taking the crutch back with a sour look on her face, Rescha set it down before she leaned back on her hands.

“I couldn’t have gone if I wanted to with my foot. Not like I’m a sniper yet,” Rescha said giving a sidelong look at Samson. “Who went on the mission this time?” she asked hoping that Kam’s name didn’t pop up.

Rescha sighed at hearing Kam—Kamala’s?—name first. At least Treia had been there to help him and Dragon, Bryanne, and Gabriel …

Rescha did not recognize the last name and arched a brow. “I haven’t met him yet. And, Lieutenant, I don’t think any of us are going to get along. I mean, Kam, Treia, and I do but aside from that, everyone seems hostile toward each other.” Rescha had been watching everyone lately. It was all she could do. That and read.

“I’m not an expert on these things, Lieutenant,” Rescha said before adding in a smaller voice, “but I’ve seen movies and aren’t you the one that’s supposed to fix all of this?” It was a question that could get her into trouble but it was the truth too. The group was missing their foundation and had no true authority. It was military anarchy.

Six missions and if they were anything like the one Rescha had been on … The girl lowered her eyes and shook her head. “Seems like someone is trying to get us all killed,” Rescha said, hoping it weren’t true.

“Of course I can keep a secret.” Rescha said. She was already keeping Kam’s secret so another one couldn’t hurt. “You can tell me anything Samson, just like Kam or Treia.” The last name made her roll her eyes and sigh in exasperation.

“… you mean we were sent here to die,” Rescha asked bewildered, perplexed, and stunned into almost silence. That was the only question she could ask, if it could be considered a question more so than a statement.

They had been put here so the military could get rid of them, just like Rescha’s foster family had gotten rid of her.

“No one ever wants me,” Rescha said more to herself than to anyone else. Looking up at the sky, she attempted to push those thoughts from her mind. It wasn’t right. None of it was. Just because the military was done with someone and did not want them in the way didn’t mean they had to try and get them all killed. None of it sat right with Rescha.

How could Samson honestly tell Rescha to keep this a secret?

“I’m sorry they threw you aside. I know how it feels,” the girl said in an attempt to make him feel a little better.

“Not much of a family, but better than the one I had before,” Rescha admitted, sparing Samson all the dark details of her last foster family and of Thomas. It was then a thought came to her.

“Lieutenant … do we ever … get to make our … own missions?”

“I-It was just a curious questions, Lieutenant,” Rescha said while fumbling for her crutches. “I didn’t m-mean anything by it. It’s n-nothing, really. I promo—Ouch!” Rescha had tried to stand up before her ankle was ready and without support for it. She ended up collapsing back onto the ground and holding her swollen joint.

“I dunno, it just … opened,” Rescha said while taking Samson’s hand to pull herself back up. Using her good foot for support as well as the man’s shoulder, Rescha picked up her crutches successfully that time.

“Lieutenant … you ever want to kill someone because of something they did to you?” The question seemed to come out of the blue but it was more relevant than perhaps Samson could realize.

Rescha stared at Samson for a long while before nodding. She turned and hobbled back into the barracks.

He knew a guy. The lieutenant knew a guy …

It hadn’t taken much for Rescha to open her eyes. The young woman hadn’t been asleep at all. When she rolled over to face Kam, the dark circles beneath her eyes from lack of sleep were able to be witnessed. Her mind had been far too busy to be able to get any rest.

“Kam …” Rescha pulled the itchy blanket off of her and set her feet on the floor. Her crutches were nearby and Rescha grabbed them up. “We have to talk but not here. I need to tell you something important, Kamala,” Rescha said using his full first name. She had learned it from the lieutenant as well as what she had to tell her friend.

“Can I tell you first and then we go to shoot,” Rescha asked before lifting herself up with the aid of her crutches. She really did not want to be on them but the medic insisted in order to keep the weight off of her fracture.
