Rescha let him finished talking; let him finish saying what was on his mind. Every word that came out of his mouth however was met with Reschaā€™s shaking her head. She didnā€™t believe in any of it. How could he have all of this running through his mind? Rescha didnā€™t understand. When he was done, Rescha finally spoke up in the same timid voice.

ā€œ... because youā€™re my friend, Kam. Friends donā€™t abandon friends ...ā€ Rescha explained before placing a hand over her forehead. A headache was pressing in at her temples. She sighed and continued on explaining herself or attempting to do so.

ā€œI mean, when I first saw you, I didnā€™t like you at all. I didnā€™t like anyone. But, we talked that one night, I guess, and I dunno,ā€ Rescha said with a shrug, ā€œI never really got the chance to make real friends before. Itā€™s nice to have someone to just talk to, you know.ā€

ā€œBesides ...ā€ No. Rescha changed her mind. She wasnā€™t going to say it.

Kamala had asked her to finish her explanation which made Rescha blush bright pink. She faltered for a moment and fidgeted around, suddenly uncomfortable. His curosity would have been welcomed most times but this time wasnā€™t all that welcomed just then.

But he had asked and Rescha didnā€™t want to make him more mad ... and yet telling him could make him mad too. Rescha was stuck between a rock and a hard place surrounded by fire. It sucked. It sucked so much.

ā€œWell ...ā€ Rescha began before shoving her hands into her pockets and trying very hard to look at anything but Kamala. ā€œI kinda ... just ... I donā€™t know ... I rather talk to you, thatā€™s all. It feels better when I talk to you.ā€

ā€œI guess ...ā€ Rescha sighed and her shoulders sagged in defeat.

ā€œI guess itā€™s because I kinda like ... you?ā€

Rescha stared after Kamala for a few more seconds, staring at his back as she had most of the night. He ... just accepted it? She honestly had been waiting for the worst of his anger or for him to just blow her off like Kamala had attempted to do earlier in front of the bunker.

It was a relief that Kamala hadnā€™t tried to run away from her. Rescha was thankful for that and it was all she needed. Kamala had no need to return the interested feelings at all. Rescha wasnā€™t a person who needed such attention nor did she expect anyone to ever find her attractive.

Thomas had made sure to burn that into her mind forever.

When the few seconds had passed, Rescha began to follow after Kamala once more. She said nothing and kept her eyes to the ground to watch her footing.

Rescha Graves smooches the shit out of Kamala and marries him in the future. They buy a house with a white picket-fence and have lots of babies.

Rescha simply nodded at Kamalaā€™s direction. He knew what he was doing. Kamala always seemed to know what he was doing in her eyes. Rescha was so clueless most of the time it was pitiful. All she knew was that the city was nearby and in the general direction they were traveling.

A foot found a dip in the ground and it happened to be attached to her bad ankle. Rescha grimaced and bit down on her lower lip so that she didnā€™t cry out. If she showed any sign that it was beginning to bother her a great deal, Kamala was not going to be pleased.

However, Rescha could no longer ignore the fact that her boot was becoming more and more tight around her ankle. The swelling was getting extremely bad and she did not need to be a doctor to tell.

At that point, she realized that taking the pills for her pain would not hurt but Rescha didnā€™t like it. Yet, Kamala may want them. She had promised to take them but Rescha was only going to do it if he told her to take them.

At that point, Rescha would do pretty much anything for Kamala.

Rescha had not slept. She had not eaten and she had not spoken since Treia brought her back. All the girl did now was sit in her bunk and stare at the wall. When Samson tapped her on the shoulder, Rescha did not even look at him, nor did she rise.

She just stayed there without saying anything.

Rescha still did not move even when Samson ordered her. She only sat there, staring at the wall.

The girl was pulled to her feet easily enough while pain lanced up her ankle and into her leg. Rescha didn't cry out however. She didn't show a single bit of emotion. She just kept staring and not talking.

Rescha was awake. She knew what was going on but it was all in a haze from lack of sleep and food. Her ankle felt awful and she had been unable to get her boot off after falling. Being lifted by Samson didn't phased her and Rescha remained the same as she had been before he came to talk to her.

She turned her head away from him after being sat on the log. Rescha folded her hands into her lap and said nothing. However, a minor change did overcome Rescha and it almost seemed like her eyes were filling with tears.

At the snap, Rescha turned her weary eyes up at Samson with defiance in them. She didn't want to talk to him. She didn't want to talk to anyone, not even Treia. It would not matter to the girl if she were drilled in front of everyone or sat out here all night long. Reschaā€”the girl that reminded Samson of his long-lost daughterā€”just kept looking at him in a quietly furious anger and still said not a word.

Samson's words went in one ear and out the other. She said not a single word and didn't move an inch. Rescha just remained staring at the ground and fighting with the urge to spill tears again. The girl was nothing more than a blank slate being yelled at by Samson.

Not even the voice of Treia could get to Rescha. If anything she turned her face away from them even more, if only by a fraction. She was mad at him worst of them all. Treia had been the one to catch her and bring her back. Right then Rescha could have been with Kamala, hiding out in the city instead of sitting there ... on that log having people talk to her that she wanted nothing to do with at all.

They could been awake in one hour and it would not make a difference to Rescha. She was just going to sit there and do nothing as well as say nothing. This place was hated by her with all her heart and she wanted nothing more than to be able to run. Rescha just stared away from them both.

The sun was hanging low over head and burning a bright bold orange as it began to set in the horizon. A dry breeze stirred up the dust around Rescha, making it cling to her damp skinā€”damp from sweat. The girl was sitting on the dry and cracked red earth with her rifle. It appeared as if she had not been eating well and dark circles encompassed her eyes signaling that Rescha had not been sleeping either. Her skin had turned dark and tanned from staying in the desert and her hair was greasy from not bathing.

Her fingers were bandaged and bloodied. Rescha had spent her days in the desert field stripping her rifle and putting it back together. She did this over and over again, never stopping until her fingers bled. Even then, the girl had just wrapped them in gauze only to continue despite the pain.

She was mumbling something to herself and had stopped reconstructing her rifleā€™s bolt. Reschaā€™s eyes watched a reptile slither up onto a rock to bath beneath the sunā€™s fading rays.

Seconds later, Rescha continued with her rifle.

Reschaā€™s eyes had been drawn towards the helicopter but her gaze became disinterested as soon as it left. Someone had been dropped off or it may have been supplies. It was inconsequential to Rescha and did not matter. The approaching figure outlined against the setting sun was nothing but a dark silhouette from the girlā€™s perspective. She did not realize that it was Kamala approaching.

The rifle drew Reschaā€™s attention once more and she slid the bolt into place. Her fingers shook with agony and sharp pain much unlike how her ankle was faring. That injury had almost healed and Rescha could even place weight on it properly. The girl was healing far faster than was normal for a human being.

Finishing with the weapon, Rescha allowed it to just lay across her lap while she pulled back the soiled bandages around her fingers. Just meeting the air made them sting and feel tender. The girl sighed and put the bandages back into place, and rose from the desert ground.

Her back turned to Kamala and she made her way into the tent.

Inside the tent, Rescha put away her rifle and began to unwrap her hands. She did it slowly as to not peel away the already dried scabs from her finger tips were it was most tender. That was when Rescha heard the voice.

Her head snapped up and she stared at the far wall of the tent while the opening of the structure laid behind her. She could have sword that was Kamala talking but the desert did strange things. It had made her hear and see things that were not really there, especially when she neglected to drink water. Rescha just resigned it to her mind playing tricks on her again in the most cruel of manners.

She looked down at her unwrapped hand and turned to fetch water to clean it from the well outside. As soon as she came out from inside the tent, Rescha slammed into Kamalaā€™s back. Bewildered, the girl stepped back a few paces and then saw that it was actually him. He was there, standing right in front of her.

A second passed before her arms wrapped around Kamala in a tight embrace.
