It Is Those Who Do Not Seek Immortality That Eventually Find It

Tolend Dathar is a Legend among the Asylian People. Legends tell of a hero by that name whos task it was to protect the young princess, during the darkest days of the kingdom. Against more then a thousand men that hero stood, and for seven nights and six days he fought, until he alone stood upon a mountain of corpses upon the seventh dawn, holding the young princess in his arms.

The Tolend Dathar of today is a Guardian, one of the protectors of the royal line, a personal bodyguard to the Princess of Asylia. He is a silent man, saying nothing. He is ever alert, every ready to protect his charge. Tolend Dathar is ALWAYS with the princess, even while she sleeps, even so when she bathes or otherwise performs ablutions. Such is the purpose of the Guardians, that the royal line is always kept safe.

The equipment of the Guardian's is classified, to the level that only the current king is aware of their standard arms. However Tolends armor is a unique matter. The armor is fashioned entirely from Titansteel, a metal alloy with a density approaching that of the core of a black hole. Asylians generally use the material to make their warships, as the weight of the material precludes it being used for other means.

Tolend however is uniquely gifted. As a boy he was blessed with inhuman levels of strength, though he lacked severely in a number of other capacities, speech and higher learning among them. Military training drilled into him through sheer tenacity the means to fulfill the one mission he would be given, protection of Halena Asylia. His armor's weight makes him impossible to knock down, his sheer ungodly strength allows him to move with ease. He is the absolute perfect shield for the princess, and such is his only purpose, and the only concept he is capable of understanding. Mathmatics and science, tactics, strategy, none of these mean anything to him. To say he is merely a pit bull in human form is not actually accurate though, as a pitbulls are actually quite intelligent.

Tolend does not have strategy or tactics in mind during combat. His solution to most problems is to grab it and break it, something he is well and truly capable of doing.

History
What few people in Asylia know is that the legends that many people think of when they hear his name are actually depictions of his own history, for the Man known as Tolend Dathar is in fact a true immortal. Though Asylians are a very long lived race, they do age and eventually die. Tolend however is unique, in that he can no longer truly be classified as either living or dead.

Eons ago, when Asylia was still a fledgling kingdom, a young man was born, who was strong of body, but suffered a curious defect of birth that rendered him voiceless. For Most asylians this defect is rarely considered problematic, as many of the species are able to use Telepathy, as indeed this young man did. However another facet of this defect is a weakness to infection.

Tolend Dathar was indeed infected, by a unique virus that consumed his flesh, absorbing and taking over the entirety of his body. He died, and was thence controlled by the virus, that sought more victims as all viruses do. An outbreak was prevented by the might of the asylian people, who's magic quickly rendered the creature immobile. Studies were made of it, and over time a sort of cure was developed.

Tolend Dathar cannot be considered living, nor can he be called dead. He is in between, and nothing short of absolute dissolution will eliminate him. Such is impossible however, as the virus has rendered each individual cell sentient and willfull, meaning that when a threat to it's existence is determined, it shall separate and scatter it's constituent parts. More than one enemy of the kingdom has discovered this, to their dismay.

As if that wasn't enough, the virus is incredibly aggressive. Most asylians are rendered immune from infection not by actual medical practice, but by the fact that the asylian physiology isn't strong enough to survive infection. when an Asylian becomes infected, their bodies often simply give out and die, taken the virus with them. In most other living or organic creatures, the virus's aggression overwhelms biological, and even biomechanical, systems within hours. Nanite defenses have proven useless, as the virus assaults the nanites themselves, and somehow breaks them down to use for it's own purposes.

Tolend Dathar became a hidden asset to the Asylians, one which the king, in a bout of selfishness after the loss of his wife and birth of his daughter, decided to use for the sole purpose of protecting his daughter. He had Tolend trained and programmed to fulfill only one purpose, ensuring his daughter would never come to harm.

So begins...

"Woah woah woah! Hands off! Take a girl out before getting handsy!" Rei exclaimed as she found herself being pushed towards the cockpit. Things were getting off to less than wonderful start, and only adding to her anxiety and second thoughts about signing on with Falcor's crew. She would have found her way to the cockpit eventually, but she had assumed she had more time. Normally the Aschen authorities were slow, stupid, and easily fooled. But this time it sounded like it was more serious than she had originally thought.

"Slow down dude, I just got here five minutes ago." She added sliding into the pilot's seat. Taking a quick minute to acclimate herself to the ship's controls, she watched as the Glaive's systems came to life under the instruction of the co-pilot. Life support and navigation were already online, as were a number of other systems, the only thing left it seemed was the engines. "And yeah.. I'm the new kid, what of it?"

Reaching over to grab her own headset, she happened to glance out and down through the glass of the cockpit. Spying Ean talking to someone on the dock she frowned. She could see him and three other persons, one of those three being someone which she had hoped to not see again. "Shit..." Rei muttered now very much inclined to agree with the co-pilot's comment about Ean having a funny feeling. "How quick can you spin those engines to thirty percent and hold them?" She asked the co-pilot her tone much more serious now. There would be no more joking and smart comments from her until later.

If the captain wanted them waiting locked and loaded on the docks, then Rei was happy to oblige. She just didn't look forward to the potential of having to play chicken with Langara's orbital defense platforms. She didn't have the means to fake the correct signal to patch them through. For now though, she would do everything short of taking off, up to and including radioing the control tower.

"Tower, this is the Cobalt Glaive holding on dock 13. Requesting start up for general departure."

From her spot down in the spaceport, she looked up at the Aegis field.

"All that over not wanting his permits checked." She said, clasping her hands behind her back. She turned to face away from the sky as she tapped her communicator.

"Defense teams stand down, you did good out there." She said, stopping to look up at the sky. "Disengage the veil, have Admiral Hanley instruct her forces to stand down. I have what I need." Marlene added. "Without specialized maintenance, any Aschen installed upgrades will ultimately fail." She said, turning to her agent. "If they can escape, they can invade. We had a poor performance from all reaction teams." She said, moving down the jetway. "But a man like Falcor is a man of reputation, it will be very onerous to carve out a living for one's self when no one will hire you."

"I want a facsimile of the Cobalt Glaive constructed, and a black ops team assembled. I'm going to ruin this man, in every way possible." She said with a wicked grin.

She turned back to Halena. "Our friend played the Asylians, and Admiral Thauce the same way he played us, someone like this must not be allowed to continue. I threw everything at him, and he shrugs it off..."

"Curious... he was able to interrupt my abilities. I must find out how." Turning back to her agents, she scowled.

"I want all relevant data forward to my office immediately." She then turned to Halena. "We need to meditate on this."

"They are well." the figure on the screen responded, before they turned to Marlene. "I trust your Aschen captors have treated you well?" They asked, before they turned back to Halena.

"They have found the mercenary, and are preparing a Natunrunnar strike against him, and the Aschen fleet positioned in the Canus system. Your farce is beginning to unfold, you must act quickly, I can only stall the Knadan for so long."

Halena blinked twice before saying "Oh... A natunrunnar... Operation.... Oh that is troubling."

She tried once again to peer at the skein of time, only to see the whiteout now had it completely overrun. "Yes well. A quick explanation is required for you, Marlene."

"A natunrunnar operation is one of the few operations I'm familiar with, though I have never seen one utilized. It involves overlapping existing space with the same physical rules in place for another space. In this manner, one can make a section of open space feel as though it has the same gravity as a gas giant."

She then tilted her head. "Or they could make an entire planetary system suffer the same circumstances as the Void Sea. In that case, all ships would be unable to move at sublight speeds faster than four hundred kilometers per hour, warping would be absolutely impossible."

"But most importantly, it would allow them to use a multitude of combat operations that rely on the Void Sea's unique properties. They would be able to completely immobilize any vessel, as well as shut down all electronic, mechanical, and biological systems inside said vessel, before boarding it. In short, a perfect capture operation. So with that in mind, we really really ABSOLUTELY need to make sure that Ean Falcor and your own ships are not present in the Canus system when this happens, otherwise my plans fall apart.

Watchtower Cluster Galtea

High orbit over the Langaran continent of Lamos. First test of project: Arthur's Mantle.

Roughly one hundred twenty thousand kilometers from the watchtower was a series of three satellites had been positioned around a decommissioned Reverence I, hundreds of small spacecraft flitted about, as the Aschen prepared the test for their new defense system.

Commander Kalfas watched closely as the readouts showed promise, he turned to a pair of technicians, whom were going over some notations from the project.

"Commence first test of Arthur's Mantle defensive system." The Commander ordered, and several crew began to work the console, as a three-dimensional holographic representation came to life.

"Rapid Conversion, this is Watchtower Actual, are you prepared to initialize systems?"

The Reverence's Commander replied in the affirmative, keying up his reply on the speakers, Commander Kalfas nodded. "Initialize the timer, one millicenton, initialize transphasic anchors... now."

"Transphasic anchors initialized, Watchtower Actual."

Kalfas nodded, and began to key in his command code, while the technicians began to work their calibrations. "Anchor point confirmed... Raptor Two-One prepare to synchronize your FTL to initialize the test."

"Rapid Conversion, you remember the procedure? Engage Mantle, and then engage planck field."

"Affirmative, Watchtower Actual."

Kalfas watched the console, and then he looked out to the ship in the distance, which was just a speck on his display.

The Three satellites, and the Reverence I disappeared, without so much as a trace.

Kalfas nodded. "Communications check?"

The Technician shook his head. "Subspace communications are not receiving anchor point, dimensional interference is preventing the signal tether"

Another crewman spoke up. "FTL test is initializing, phased coordinates are locked."

The Commander nodded, watching the Raptor jump, there was a sudden violent red spatial tear that erupted where the Raptor was supposed to be within phase, the ship ejected into realspace. The Technicians all went over the data readouts, and one turned to the Commander.

"The Test is a success. Planck interference with dimensional barriers isolates the Pocket dimension, when Arthur's mantle is engaged, like the simulations show, not only will physical interaction with the subject be impossible, but with Planck systems engaged, it will be impossible to cross into the pocket dimension, thus the invader is ejected back into real-space."

The Commander nodded, as the Reverence, and the three satellites reappeared in the distance.

"The Emperor will be pleased."

Marlene furrowed her brow, and looked down to the command console in front of her. "We have to believe." Marlene said, grasping the console. "Sometimes we have to take a leap of faith." She looked up to the wall, her brows still furrowed. "Especially since my vision has been clouded, I have never had this problem before, I used to see it all so clearly."

She took a deep breath, and focused her attention back to Halena.

"We need to put a stop to this travesty with all due haste, how do we facilitate this meeting with the King?"

Halena hops to her feet and begins pacing back and forth, her thoughts a riotous storm so furious and rapid that it would make the earlier processing of timelines and potential possibilities seem like a gentle stream in comparison.

"I asked William Dorsun to meet with the Taiyou Emperor under the pretense of requesting the Taiyou stay out of the war. In actuality, his goal is to facilitate the meeting upon neutral ground. First, Dorsun needs to have the emperor agree to the terms of the cease fire, whereupon Dorsun will send a message directly to his majesty. This is the most difficult part, as communications will be directed and presented through military channels, and thus the greatest chance of interception occurs here. Khagaan is a smart one, so I have no doubt that he'll intercept the message and proceed to carry it directly to my father's hand."

She snaps twice as she speaks "The message will be intended to draw my father's attention to the Taiyou and the need to facilitate a proper association with them, which for Asylians means providing the adequate respect due to another ruling body. My father will have to meet with the Taiyou Emperor himself. That is when Dorsun is to have the Taiyou invite the Aschen emperor, Thus facilitating their meeting."

"The main difficulty will lie in the message itself being intercepted by someone other than Khagaan. If that happens, it's likely the Knadan will have begin presenting further roadblocks to disrupt the process."

Kesslee quietly sat there, and pondered the words. "Justice." Kesslee repeated, slowly he began to shake his head. "You want freedom." The Grand Confessor smirked, before he leaned forward, his stark blue eyes seemingly staring into Joseph's soul.

"The Empire protects it's people, it shelters them, ensures they have food, housing, and medical care. It propels it's people to greatness among the stars. All it asks in return is their obedience, their participation in the machinations of it's bureaucracy." Kesslee explained, his voice firm, like a parent admonishing his child.

"You fight back out of ignorance." The Grand Confessor leaned back. "You fight back because your mind is sickened, clouded by the romanticized notions of conflict, of rebellion, because you have no purpose."

The sound of tumblers clicked, and clattered, before the door behind Kesslee opened up, standing in the doorway was a single IIA operative, clad in all black, a pair of dark sunglasses clipped into a pocket in his jacket. He stepped aside to reveal a striking blonde standing behind him. Vivid red lipstick stood in contrast to her pale skin, and deep blue eyes that seemed to shimmer in the light. Her attire was form fitting, consisting of a short, knee length skirt, white blouse, with frills around the collar, and a black blazer, which bore a simple gold pin on the lapel, the logo of Imperial Intelligence.

"Grand Confessor Kesslee." The woman said. She peered into the room, though she knew her Asylian charges weren't far behind, it seemed she, and Halena were inseparable, and that the Asylian Princess would catch up in due time.

The door slammed shut with a dull thunk behind the woman, and she took a step forward. While striking, she was just as imposing, as she towered over both, the seated Grand Confessor, and the young Rebel.

"Director." Kesslee said, casting a brief glance towards the imposing woman.

She bore her gaze, like piercing daggers on Lawson, before stepping forward, leaning on the table, the faint floral, woody, and herbal scent of her perfume filled the room.

"Your rebels friends have promised you freedom from a doomed existence. But you will find no salvation in this cause. Those who started this rebellion knew what they wrought. Do not mistake their intent, or we will all perish."

The woman circled around, moving just to Lawson's side, her soft fingertips running along his cheek as she cupped his jaw from behind. Visions of a burning Molecay, at the hands of Asylian warships, and Asylian warriors would fill Joseph's mind, millions of people slaughtered, he seemed to be standing on a precipice overlooking a burning Tiir, the capital of Molecay.

The visions returned to the interrogation room, and this time, Marlene had moved to rest somewhat on the table, leaned in close, her face inches from Lawson's. "I can see things. Your life, Joseph Lawson, the things you have done. The things you felt you had to do, all leading to this moment. You wish to be forgiven. Do you wish to be forgiven?"

Lawson looks down for a bit, u8sure of what to say to the new person. Then he makes eye contact, and states, "I suppose I do want to be forgiven. But what will forgiveness give me? Where will it get me? And what will it do for me? I f you ask me, I don't need forgiveness for my actions, like you don't need forgiveness for defending yourself against the Asylian." He takes a breath. "Or for mentally retraining your people when they think differently. Do you need to be forgiven? No. And how do you know that us in the rebellion aren't going to peacefully protest or something like that? For all I know that may be what we'll do. They didn't tell me anything."

Marlene chuckled quietly to herself, as she kept her eyes locked on Joseph. "I see the past, I see the present, and I see the future." She said cryptically. "The tall man cannot hide in the short grass."

Marlene leaned in close. "I have seen past the farthest star, and I have gone to the edges of the universe. I can take you there, if you so choose." The woman whispered. "I can give you all the things you ever knew you wanted, taste from the tallest chalice, dine at the largest halls. All I ask in return is your obedience, your obedience for a chance with a life without pain, without heartache. All this I can give you and more. Just for your submission." Marlene said, her voice low, almost like a growl, and it carried a strong sense of suggestion with it.

"Nobody is retrained for thinking differently." Marlene's voice seemed to echo in Joseph's mind, reverberating.

"I simply show you the truth, you have been taken as a fool by those who you thought were friends."

Lawson shakes his head, hearing the lady's voice echo in his head. "No-one is retrained for thinking differently..."
Then he digests the other info the lady gave him.

"A life without pain is no life. I know this. I'll pass on your offer."
Still, he can't help but feel like he's been fighting for the wrong side... He almost wants to help them. But he also doesn't want to betray his brothers, both his literal one and his brothers in arms.

"I don't want to see what's coming... I know. You're going to glass the mines-" he stops and widens his eyes as he realizes that he just gave up a vital piece of information. The rebellion's location.

Marlene smirked, she continued to ply him.

"You can save them, you can deliver them from their fate." She said, her voice still reverberating through his mind. "Your brother, is misguided by those who seek only their own power." The suggestion was strong with her voice, each subliminal syllable rolling from her tongue.

Kesslee silently watched Marlene work, she was an artist, the woman knew exactly which buttons to push, sometimes she didn't have to torture her subjects.

"We have no intention of glassing Sky's Edge." Marlene commented. "We merely wish to restore order, and prosperity to the outer colonies." She said, leaning back.

There was a strong suggestive tone in her next words, as if Marlene's voice was inside Lawson's head, as if she was his own inner monologue.

"The rebels are using you and your brother, you can save him, all you have to do is submit, pledge your allegiance to the Empire."

Another vision washed over him, this time of a young blonde girl standing on a street in Chasm City, Yellowstone. She was looking up at the very first Aschen ships as they began to land on Yellowstone. This little girl was Marlene.

"You can save them from themselves, We can give you purpose.."

Lawson just sits there and lets the woman's words wash over him, some striking at particular spots in his brain.

The woman was right, he was just a tool, a tool of the Ash, the empire would give him purpose, the one thing he needed, the one thing he craved. He needed to fulfill a purpose.

So he bows his head and looks back up, staring directly into the eyes of the woman confessor.

"I submit."

Then he smiles a little bit and says,
"What do you need to know?"

Kesslee continued to watch quietly, only for a moment before he stood up, and started towards the door. He had seen Marlene work before, she had cut her teeth on the switches, turning both of them into tools of the Empire. The two of them used drastically different forms of mental manipulation, so Kesslee turned to leave Marlene to her work.

Smiling, Marlene nodded slightly. "Tell me about the man who rallies your friends to his cause, tell me about the mines." Marlene said, leaning in close.

"I want you to take me there."

Marlene shook her head quietly. "You don't know much about the location of the mines? Yet, you worked to patrol the perimeter?" Marlene's facial expression shifted slightly, and she began to exert her force of will, which culminated into a strange pressure like sensation behind Lawson's eyes.

"Cossack." Marlene uttered, turning over towards Kesslee.

"We will journey to Sky's edge, and you will take me to him."

The words felt like a strong suggestion, as if Marlene's voice was actually inside Joseph's head.

Looking down to the restraints, they became undone with an audible click, Kesslee rose from his seated position, as did Marlene. "You will regain your purpose, and be set loose upon these rebels with our blessing."

Joseph can literally feel the woman's voice in his head. When the shackles are undone, he raises a hand to his head, barely registering the words of the interrogator.

When those words do register, he blinks once and nods.

He doesn't feel like he even needs to say anything, this woman understands everything he says and does.

"Set... Set loose?"
