Setting

East Lanterna Way

East Lanterna Way leads from Verinotte Square to the Eastern Gates, passing dual floored houses and businesses alike. To the south is the Mint and Sage, rustic Bed and Breakfast suitable for travelers of any degree. The location is owned and operated by a resident of Verinotte Hollow, and promises the best hospitality on this side of Terra. Food for the guests is said to be above par.

Men, monsters, and dogs of all species cycle in and out from the north, bearing goods they bought at The Piata. Many boasted of treasure acquired at the Stones of Isis, a shop notorious for having items previously construed as unable to be found. This street is always lit by enchanted lanterns, in fact these lanterns are it's namesake. Due to the lanterns, and the Tower Alba peeking over the buildings to the east, crime on this side of the city is low. Forces Vankoryth can be found posted on every corner, as security more than a military presence.

An evening walking down East Lanterna Way is a walk down a way alive with life. When the shopping is over, the crowd from the Piata bustles into the lit street, music pouring from the houses and the Tavern at the square. It is at this time the cobble stones truly glisten with the footsteps of the people, the diverse crowd a melting pot of darkness. Many enjoy fine crafted cigars, others stroll from one end of town to the other. Either way, East Lanterna Way is somewhere to discuss the new wine from Therrier-Paix at Tauvyr Tavern, or perhaps the rumors of the Mayor secretly not existing at all. A town without a mayor?

In the early hours of the afternoon, you will find the occasional drunkard ambling from Tauvyr Tavern to the Mint and Sage. The Forces Vankoryth patrolling the streets normally don't bother non-rabble-rousers.

Every now and then, the roaring of a motorcycle could be heard pulling into the parking alley of the Gae Ceann Clubhouse. The leather-clad gang members are a frequent sight around East Lanterna Way.

"Oh. That would be very nice of you, Mister Wolfinson. My, you're extending so many favors. I must invite you to the manor for dinner sometime."

Leela opened her mouth to protest, but could only manage a gape. The look said it all. Are you kidding?

"Close your mouth, Leela. That's unbecoming," her mother commented. "Well, if we take a peek outside and see if all the commotion has died down, I think Leela and I will be on our way, but you can be assured we will visit... in the very least, I will visit... tomorrow. I'm sure my husband would love to see this place, as well."

There was a momentary tightness in his eyes at the mention of her husband, but Phil quickly dismissed his jealousy as absurd. He'd only just met this woman... even if he did find her charming beyond words.

"That would be absolutely wonderful, I'm sure. I look forward to meeting him and the rest of your family. Your invitation is most generous, and though I should avoid putting you to any trouble over my small kindnesses, I must admit my curiosity overwhelms my propriety, so I accept."

Philius escorted the two ladies to the rear exit and opened it for them. Before moving aside, he captured Nora's hand in his and bent at the waist in a moderate bow, resisting the urge to place a peck atop it by the narrowest of margins. "It has been my profound pleasure to make your acquaintance, madame..." He gave Leela a slight bow, still holding her mother's hand. "... and mademoiselle. This exit should allow you to avoid any unpleasantness by escaping the sight of that... young woman with the truck. It is almost light out, but I will escort you home, as propriety demands, if you wish it. Otherwise, I am off to bed with the hope of your company on the morrow. It will be a welcome respite from what will likely otherwise be a day of dusting and furniture arranging."

"Don't turn this into a fight, lady. This is Gae Ceann territory, vankoryth forces will come down on your ass." The bouncer cocked his shotgun to check the shells left in the barrels, pulling his shirt up to reveal his open ribcage and the glowing orb beside his beating heart and then pulling it back down. "That ain't gonna do shit except scratch the paint on our pub." Hark smiled, an unhinged grin.

Hark exercised his arm. "Sicken up your herd if you need to, I've got mine right here. I just wanted to remind you, this is Gae Ceann territory, coming in here like that is fuckin' insulting." Hark spat on the floor. "Next time, take the normal car. Especially if you're coming back around these parts."

Hark was glad the group had got out of the way, that was his original intention after-all. Who said the Gae Ceann didn't look out for the people outside their clubhouse?

Callandra shrugged. "If I'm coming back, it's to redevelop." She said, rolling up the window to the truck. "This place is a frakking dump."

She threw the truck into gear, and pulled the cannon back into the bed of the truck.

"Let the military seize control of the place before we redevelop." Once the windows were rolled up, the truck burned rubber and screeched off.

Nora gave the smallest curtsy. "Why, I would not want to give you so much trouble, but if you would so li-"

"No! No, we're fine. We're completely fine!" said Leela, grabbing her mother's sleeve to drag her away. "We've had a wonderful stay and she'll certainly come back sometime, I'm sure, but daddy is waiting for us to get back soon and he might get worried." Nora was ushered out by her daughter, but not before Leela took a peek outside to make sure everything was alright. Once outside, the young redhead stuck her head back in through the door to leer at Mister Wolfinson.

"Yes, and I said daddy. My father. My mother's husband." Her eyes narrowed as she backed out, making it awfully clear that his advances on her mother were unwanted. She popped her head back in one more time.

"HUUS. BAND."

And then she was gone.

Philius gave Leela a blank look, resisting the urge to stare her down. When she was gone, he rifled through his books, came back with a worn copy of Cyrano de Bergerac, and exited the same way the ladies had. He double-checked the area, but saw only street lamps, fog, and the cobblestones glistening with morning dew in the first dim light before dawn.

He strode over to the clubhouse and rapped lightly on the door.

Hark opened the door, a look of abrupt confusion as he swung it open and saw the face of the man who owned the bookstore down the road. "This is a bar too, friend. You don't knock if you live here." The biker swung his dark hand forward to slap him on the back and shove him inside, leaning his head out to look from left to right for any signs of the vehicle from earlier.

After returning from the clubhouse a bit later, Philius busied himself with setup. He unlocked the front door, opened the metal shutter, set a few rare books out in a glass case on the lonely table under the lonely light bulb, then began sweeping the dust out of the place, whistling Vivaldi as he worked.

Looking around, he frowned at the emptiness of the space. Philius grabbed a few boxes from his car, some filled with knickknacks and personal belongings, most with his own books, and brought them upstairs to his living area. After setting all that up, he went back down to the shop and put up a few posters. Photographs of book piles and quotes from famous authors, along with one or two reproduction movie posters from the forties and fifties.

Satisfied that he had accomplished all he could until his stock came in from the distributor, he eased into his comfortable leather chair behind the checkout desk and opened a book.

There was a knock at the front, and a call. "Mister Wolfinson?" It was Nora.

However, at the front, Nora was not the only person there. Stood beside her was a stalwart gentleman who dressed within the same period, but different region, as the woman. He wore a pair of preacher boots, black brushed cotton trousers, a clean white shirt with a cherry vest over it, and, to top it all off, a soft gambler hat on his head. Around his waist was a gun belt with a holster, within it a shiny revolver.

He had strong features, all of which included a cleft chin and a chiseled jaw. There were a pair of goggles looped around the crown of his hat. He had his hands folded together behind his back.

At the sound of Nora's voice, Philius got to his feet, wondering at the small flutter in his stomach. "Come on in, Nora, erm... Miss... erm, Missus Carroll. It is, after all, a shop, and you are always welcome here." He failed to notice the man behind her from his desk, but spotted him as he approached the door, momentarily taken aback and making an examination of this new person.

"Your husband... I presume?"

Philius straightened his cravat and tugged down the front of his vest even though both were perfectly correct.

Nora opened the door and let herself in, a chilly wind following. She was dressed as she had been earlier that day, but her hair was let loose around her shoulders. At Phil's inquiry, the woman jolted forward suddenly, involuntarily, in a singular laugh. Almost within the same motion, her hand came up to cover her mouth.

Garrett frowned. "Now you ain't gotta be so nasty about it, Nora. It ain't far from the truth, after all!" His voice had a distinct southern lilt.

Nora tapped him on the shoulder chidingly for his statement, but kept her attention on the bookstore owner. "No! No, no, no!" Her cheeks colored with the humor of it. "This is Garrett Carroll, my brother-in-law. My husband couldn't make it. Garrett volunteered to escort me here after hearing about what happened this morning."

The man stepped forward and held a hand out toward Phil. "Hello, Mister Wolfinson. Awfully pleased t'meetcha. Thanks for keepin' the girls safe."

Phil's demeanor toward the man brightened instantly and he grasped the proffered hand with good cheer. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mr. Carroll, and what gentleman could have done otherwise in those trying circumstances? I know there isn't much stock to browse just now, so I apologize in advance. Please, won't the both of you have a seat?"

He pulled out a seat for Nora, waiting for her to accept it before moving to his own. There was another chair next to it for Garrett.

"Don't worry about the fullness of your shelves, sir. I'm much more of a "shoodit!" kinda person than I am a reader." He gifted the man with one of his broadest grins.

Both he and Nora took seats and gave their attention to Mister Wolfinson. "Well, I am expecting some ab-so-lutely stunning festivities this evening seeing as Nora, bless her soul-" He reached over to pat her knee, "-couldn't keep her yap closed about this little store and the man she found in it."

Nora's fan came to bat Garrett's shoulder again. "Oh, don't listen to him. Any sentence from a woman seems to last a good hour to him, though...I did speak a bit fondly of this place."

Phil spread his arms, at a bit of a loss. "Aside from my company, a glass of scotch whiskey, and an old tome or two from my private collection, I'm afraid there's very little I can offer, just now. Although... I HAVE unpacked to hotplate. I could offer you some tea or coffee and perhaps a few digestives. Unless... Did you come for a Latin lesson, Missus Carroll? That would occupy us most thoroughly."

He did his best to suppress his admiring gazes at Nora in the presence of her brother-in-law, and was moderately successful.

"He was joking, Mister Wolfinson," Nora pointed out. "Apologies. He tends to do that and not make it obvious."

"I wouldn't mind a little scotch, though! What're y'doin' holding back from uh, eh?" Garrett chuckled and planted his hands on his knees, leaned forward with a groan, and got up from his seat. "Where've you got the alcohol, boy?"

Nora looked at Phil apologetically, but let Garrett at his antics. "I wouldn't mind starting them today. At least you and I would be occupied, yes?"

"I'll get it, Mr. Garrett. No worries." Phil stood and headed toward the stairs to his living area. "Why don't I go get Mr. Garrett and myself some scotch, then you and I can begin a lesson. I'll need to get a sense of where your current level of proficiency is."

He ambled up the still-unfamiliar staircase (the steps in these old buildings tended to be tall and narrow due to space constraints), and shortly returned with two glasses sporting two fingers of scotch whiskey each. He put one down in front of Garrett, then took a generous sip of his. Despite the midday hour, Phil hadn't slept, and so felt justified indulging. A little tipple did tend to take the sting out of sleep deprivation. If consumed with sufficient leisure, it could even be done without putting oneself to sleep.

"So, Nora, is your knowledge mostly limited to vocabulary and common phrases, or do you have a grasp on some grammar?"

Garrett's demeanor lightened more, if that was possible, at the sight of the scotch. "Yer a good man, you are. The hosts of hosts-" He reached for his glass, holding it up to Phil briefly. "Cheers."

"I don't understand the grammar whatsoever. I stopped far before I got to that, ah...I can distinctly remember a good lot of vocabulary." She mused over it for a moment, fingers tapping on her lips.

Something, however... was absolutely demanding her attention. She could not believe she had not said or done anything about it beforehand. "Be...fore we get to that, actually, you look like you could use some help around here. You're just settling in, and so are we at the new house, but I'm sure you wouldn't mind a hand. We've got many servants who could come and help tidy things up."

Down the road a lone black rolls royce was seen driving up the cobbled street.

Following the brief exchange between Cally and Hark, some phone calls had been made, and the lone black car, which was flanked in front, and behind by black tinted black sedans.

"I understand there's been some unsavory characters in this neighborhood." The older man said as the car crept to a stop in front of the Gae-Cann Clubhouse and the bookstore nearby.

The older man produced a single gold Aureus, before he handed it to David.

"Go in there and do what needs to be done."

He lifted his glass in a return gesture to Garrett, but his attention was almost immediately consumed by the enchanting Nora offering to loan him servants.

"I... that is... a very generous offer, madame. I don't know how I could possibly repay such a kindness as I am obviously of humbler means. If you insist, however, I couldn't possibly decline. A good portion of my stock should be coming in from the distributors tomorrow and the upstairs flat is still quite dusty."

Phil slumped back into his chair, flabbergasted.

"Well, we have them to spare, and the house is nearly ready. After all, what could I do after your little heroic act? Leela and I might have been caught in that fire. I can...only imagine how terrible it would have been. I couldn't thank you enough, Mister Wolfenson." She said this genuinely, her expression becoming somber and drawn. "Helping you with the bookstore wouldn't even compete."

Garrett leaned back in his chair, having already finished his scotch. He looked into his glass, his expression distraught. He had not been listening at all. He had not noticed any tiny hints that Phil had put out about his infatuation, either.

"Hrm. What?" he piped, looking between them.

David wasn't a man of many words and his answer came with the click of the latch on the car door as he swung it open and stepped out onto the cobblestone streets. The unmarked vehicles wouldn't be easily linked to Cally's earlier presence in Verinotte Hollow, and David calmly straightened his coat and adjusted his brimmed-hat.

As he closed the car door and approached the club-house he checked the metallic apparatus on his hand - a seemingly harmless device that was worn similar to a glove with a red gem resting in the palm. He flexed his fingers to make sure it was fitted properly before he reached the doors.

His somewhat rough appearance, and the tattoos that snaked their way up his neck from beneath his coat likely left him blending well enough as to not be out of place in the biker club-house.

"Well, Nora. I..." Phil watched her eyes as she detailed the depth of her gratitude, then snapped out of his reverie and looked at Garrett with what he hoped was a comradely grin. "Just talking about servants. You know what? I think we need the rest of that bottle."

He rushed up the stairs and came back with a nearly full bottle of very nice single malt scotch, plunking it down and refilling both glasses. He left the bottle near Garrett in silent invitation, then picked up his drink, turning back to Nora. "Really, madame. What sort of animal would I have been to allow you to come to harm?"

He took a long pull from his glass, draining half, and relaxed somewhat, smiling contentedly.

Hark leaned next to the door of the clubhouse, a smoke in one hand and his phone in the other. There was a revolver by his side and there was a faint white pulsing glow beneath his wifebeater. The bouncer wasn't exactly paying the best attention when he kicked open the door for them, the girl he was texting was far more important.

"You can bring your weapons in, but if you try anything, your weapons are staying." Hark announced loudly, almost casually. Hark looked up as he finished texting. "By the way, you want to move your vans, you'll get ticketed." Hark mused, sniffing and going back to his phone.
