The Threatened Balance

The Threatened Balance

0 INK

The fate of three kingdoms is at stake. Will Hell, Heaven and Earth remain at peace? Or will the Balance be disturbed and a dark power released to destroy everything? (spots are full but if you want to submit, I might squeeze you in)

Introduction

In a universe similar to ours there are three kingdoms:
The Overworld (Heaven)
The Medium (Earth)
and The Demon Realm (Hell)

These three Kingdoms emit an energy which forms a seal that contains a great and dark power. In order for this energy to be emitted properly, the Kingdoms must be kept in balance. The ones who oversee this balance are The Guardians, great beings without definite shape and almost infinite power. Only the Guardians know of The balance, and what it's purpose is.

However in the Demon Realm all is not well. There is a lack of resources and the Realm has begun to get over crowded. There are murmurs of a plan, a dangerous plan. The Demon lord knows of these murmurs, for he too has thought of the possibility. An invasion of The Medium. Surely if The Demon Realm were to go to war with the Humans they would succeed. The Humans even though they possessed strength, would not be able to withstand the Demons assault.
The Overworld watches eagerly, if the Demon Realm were to attack the Medium, they would be weakened greatly, leaving them vulnerable. The Overworld could finally be rid of its long time rival. The balance is threatened.

The Guardians have decided that they can not let this happen. So they have called a gathering of the Kingdom's leaders:
The leader of the Overworld: The Overseer.
The Lord of the Demon Realm: The Demon Lord
and The protector of The Medium: The Shield Bearer.
Through this council it has been decided: The Demon Lord's daughter shall marry a human, in order to establish peaceable relations between the Demon Realm and The Medium. Thus the Demon Princess has been sent to The Medium with her personal guard in search of man she deems suitable. The Shield Bearer has promised the Council that the Human Male she decides on will be granted a great power, in order to become the next Shield Bearer.

However, there are those who disagree with the Council's decision. These individuals, intent on having the war, set out to eliminate the Princess and any Human Male she gets close to, ignorant of the consequences of what will happen.

Kurokiku wrote:The overall premise of the RP is in some senses a stereotypical arranged-marriage story, but the creation of an alternate world and supernatural elements gives it the potential to be different from others of its kind. Unfortunately, the plot, which seems to promise political intrigue and adventure on the grandest of scales, never really lives up to its potential. To be frank, the rest of the story gets bogged down in the romance, which on its own is not compelling enough to carry the tale. It is clear what the characters are endeavoring to /do/, and to a certain degree why, and it’s not overly complicated (a plus), but it get close to being too simple. The characters themselves have potential: in-story, they are all different from each other and some of the dynamics have the promise of being really funny or dramatic. I for example enjoyed the argument between the princess and her bodyguard in the beginning. These little moments generally get passed over in favor of things happening mostly between or relating to the couples and are only occasionally shown in others. So while there was a good amount of /potential/ for humor and drama or meaningful interaction outside the pairs, in practice it mostly only happens between the characters who aren’t in the pairs to begin with. It would have been really nice to see, for example, the male lead interact with the Princess’s bodyguard. They both seemed to be pretty no-nonsense, and might have had interesting friction if they disagreed, or maybe they might have been similar enough to get along. The posts themselves generally stick to grammatical and spelling rules, though they do tend to get short and “tell” rather than “show.” There is little appeal to senses, and most of each post is devoted to dialogue and some direct action or possibly thought. Instead of just saying “she looked at this,” it might have been useful to describe what she saw and how that influenced her next action. There are characters, and there is a world, but sometimes those things were a little too separate from each other. There were a few issues regarding formatting, mostly that several pieces of dialogue and actions would be included in the same paragraph rather than being separated. For the most part, though, the writing was clear and understandable, and served to further the story.

Melinda nodded to Helena. Helena was her guard putting her life in danger for her. Melinda wanted to give her some kind of happiness. She looked up at the sky. "I wonder how you will come back to me David." She said a bit worried. Not knowing if he would come back changed or not worried her. She jumped to the ground making a flip. Walking in the house she saw Jack laying down asleep. "I guess even guys like him need their beauty rest." She laid on the couch waiting and thinking. If Jake agrees to this plan it will take a lot to convince the people to go with it. A fight would be perfect. If he fought one of my men and beat them it would prove his strength. She sighed. So much to do.

Helena smiled at his rambling- it really was quite cute. She followed him into the bedroom, and sat down. "No, to my knowledge, you can't turn me back." she explained. "But, maybe one day I will find out that you can- I really don't change often."
She began to explain the situation.
"I am not a shy girl, rather, a shy bunny." she began, thinking it might be relevant "So I am going to be very open, just say it out loud. I am quite fond of you. If I was your average girl, I think you would call it a crush." she explained. "And there is no way we can stay together after I return- I must remain a guard, and Melinda's farther will likely hear nothing of you staying."
She paused, and continued "Or that is what I thought. Melinda has an idea. It just might work. You would be able to come to our part of the realm."

"but you would have to become a knight"

Jake was thrilled at the fact that she liked him and he could help but smile.
"I think i could be a knight, i mean i have no other choice right. I want to stay with you."
He paused and thought about what he was going to say next.
"But i imagine im going to have to prove myself someway right, there not just going to let any old human become a knight, so how tough will it be."
He laid back on the bed wishing that Helena was in her normal form she was fine as a bunny but it was pretty damn hard to kiss a bunny.

Helena smiled broadly, making it appear as though she were baring her fangs. She likely looked like some sort of attack bunny. she quelled her emotions, and managed to go back to normal bunny-ness state. She looked at him, and spoke.
"I'm so happy. Believe me. And you will be able to be around David too." after she spoke she clasped her mouth shut. She was pretty sure not everyone had noticed the princess's view of him. Hell, she didn't even know, why did helena notice? she answer was simple. So many of the male- and female- staff fawned over the princess, that Melinda tended not to look that way at anyone. Ever.
"I mean, maybe, since you will be a knight, you can visit earth and stuff. But uh- you will likely need to prove you worth, that is true." she jumped up to him. "But I don't think you will have any problems with that."

Melinda got up and began to walk back and forth. She couldn't get the thought of the Shield Bearer training David out of her mind. Melinda stopped and looked out the window. She put her hand in her hair and sighed. "How much longer?" She couldn't help but begin to sing low. She didn't know what she should do. Waiting doing nothing was not something she liked. So she sung a low melody that was always young to her as a child.

Right David, he had completely forgot about him.
"I wont miss earth anyway its not like there is anything here for me if i can follow you and David it will be the place i'll feel best."
He smiled at Helena. " You know i wish you werent a bunny right now, after hearing what you said i'd very much like to kiss you."
He stood up. "Well i suppose the princess must be going crazy Jack went to sleep and theres no one to occupy her, do you think we should go keep her company."

Helena almost blushed, but again, bunnies don't really blush. she shook her head however, and looked up at him, sitting on her hind legs. "Yes, it would be a good idea to join the princess, you never know when she will need someone to watch her" she said, about to lead the way out of the room, but realizing the door was closed. She jumped, trying to reach the handle.

"stupid piece of wood."

Jake laughed, it was a funny site watching a bunny trying to open the door.
"Here let me get that for you." He scooped up Helena in his arms and despite any protests she might have walked out still holding her and into the living room with Jack asleep in the chair. He looked down to Helena absentmindly scratching her ears. "So any idea where we can find the princess."

Helena did not mind being picked up at all, and when he asked about the princess, She looked around, her ears twitching again. "I'm guessing- the roof? or maybe in the back of the house?" she pondered, noting that she was quite so very clearly not in the room. "I know she is worried about David; no way she got to sleep" she said, looking up at Jake "you must be worried about him, right? At least a little?"

"Alright then lets head to the roof."
Jake walked to the front door and stepped outside starting to gather the wind beneath him.
"David ya im alittle worried about him, but im sure he's getting stronger, and i have you here with me its really helping me keep calm. Hold on the best you can." It was weird to tell a bunny to hold on but soon he felt her push against his chest alittle more, he pushed up with the wind and shot up to the roof landling lightly on the edge. Jake looked around the empty roof then up towards the stars.
"Well i dont see her up here, are you sure she wasnt in the living room."

Helena looked at him with mild annoyance. "did you see her?" she asked, sticking out her rabbit tounge. She really didn't like being a rabbit. SHe dreaded the possibility of having to fight as one. "Lets go inside, Rabbits get cold easy" she said, shivering like crazy. "Do you think she might be in her bedroom or something? I'm beginning to grow just a tad bit worried. We really should find her" she said, looking in all directions, checking for her charge.

Jake grinned at her when she stuck her tounge out.
"Yes ma'am i'll take you inside right away, and if your getting cold i could always warm you up." He jumped down from the roof wind swirling out below him cusioning the jump making it a really light landing. He walked into the house and walked into the living room for the second time.
"I dont think its the best idea for me to go to the princess's room to look for her, but i'll probably be asleep on the couch, feel free to join me when you find her." He set Helena down went to the couch laying down and closing his eyes, he was exausted. As he laid there he heard Helena hop off and knew she'd be able to find the princess no problem he just hoped she'd come lay with him when she did.

Helena nodded at Jake "I may take you up on that offer, later." she said, smiling. "I really do just feel I will freeze to death when I am in this bunny body" She jumped off, to find the princess.
Helena glared at her ears, which took a fair bit of concentration, and a mirror. After about ten minutes, she them to stop twitching, and went to find Melinda. She hopped off down the hall, and entered a pair of double doors, which she assumed to be the entry to the princess's room. Goodness, this place is huge, much bigger than the other safe house. And I'm relatively certain that I don't think that just because I am a bunny. She though, in awe of the room. "This place- is enormous."
She said, taking a couple of jumps to land on the princess's forehead, her eyes staring into those of her charge.

"And Jake says he will gladly take up your offer. "

Melinda was opened her eyes as she felt Helena on her forehead. "The biggest room is always mine." She smiled at her. When she said Jake accepted the offer she nodded. "You know he will have to fight one of my men in order to get acceptance. A lot will happen once David....if David comes back." For some reason the 'if' had to be there because she doubted the Shield Bearer would keep her word. "It will be a danger for Jake. When we get to the demon realm I need you to protect Jake. Do not fight your kind but intimidate them. If you fight your kind for a human they will see you as a outsider." She sat up and held Helena on her lap. "We are taking a lot of chances on this so he cant change his mind."

Helena remained on her head, hoping she wouldn't sit up. "I really don't think he will." she said, smiling. "and by intimidate- do you mean bear my bunny fangs?" she said, sarcastically, following it up with an angry look, then softening. She was actually hoping that by then she would no longer be a bunny.
"how long do we have? Before we go back, I mean? I really want to explore a little.... I know it's dangerous but... please?" she asked, milking her inherent bunny-cuteness.
"Besides, if we are going to be here awhile, I can't cook every night. I checked the fridge and, well, lets just say no one has been here in quite some time."

"Hmmm. We have about 5 days left till the week is over. Two days until David comes back." She knew it would be dangerous but she was reminded by Helena's persistence that she didn't come here often. She sighed. "Fine we can explore. We wont go home until you turn back to normal even if David comes back." She smiled at Helena. "We must be careful. If you want you can even go on a date with Jake." She winked at her then grinned.

Helena blushed, and fell not only off of the girls forehead, but onto the floor.
"ouch!" she exclaimed, rubbing her head with her paw. "apparently, bunnies are clumsy, too." she groaned, annoyed to the end of the earth. "I might hate being a bunny. Scratch that, I lied. I absolutely hate being a bunny. But, you are serious? we can really, honestly, stay?" SHe asked, excited. She smiled, knowing it was sincere. "Do you suppose the bedroom next door is the guards quarters?" she asked, tired.

"Yes Helena. I believe you need a break. We can stay." Melinda grew tired as the day past. Two more days until he comes back. She looked at a sleepy Helena. "Yes I am sure its the guards quarters. Go in. But go with Jake. I dont want you alone in this form." She looked at Helena seriously. "I want him with you so he can be aware. So at the sign of trouble I want him to take you away. In this state you could get hurt if your not aware. Now go rest. You need your strength."

Helena frowned. She didn't like being looked after. But, at least it was Jake, and not, say, Jack. Helena bounded out of the room neglecting to close the door behind her. Rather, unable to close the door behind her, and found Jake. He was lying on the couch, where she had left him. She jumped to the armrest and spoke.
"I realize that this is an odd request-" she began awkwardly. "But, would you mind staying in the guards quarters with me? I'm really not prepared to fight an attacker as a bunny. Hell, I'm not prepared to fight a fox." She wished she were a human, that she were not quite so helpless, but this was life.
"And- I can't actually open the door." she admitted, annoyed.
she pawed his head, realizing his eyes were still closed.
"Did you hear me?"

Jake was half asleep when Helena started talking but he still heard everything she said. When she started pawing his head he decided to open his eyes and answer.
"Ya i'd love to stay with you, im glad you asked." Jake rose rather sleepily and bundled up Helena in his arms getting directions to the guards rooms.
He opened the door set her on the bed and sat down beside her.
"You probably know this already but i really like you, and i was umm." He wasnt quite sure how to ask a bunny out. " I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date some time before David gets back? What do bunnies do on date anyway?" He grinned, the last question was only ment to be a joke but it was true, what would he do with a bunny on a date.

Once Helena left, Melinda laid on her side. Her hair caressed her body and she took comfort in it. For some reason it pained her to see Helena feel so fondly of Jake. Is it jealousy? She smiled. A princess jealous of a guard? No I am not jealous. Just worried...If things don’t go as planned she would be horribly hurt. She sighed at the fact that things might not go as planned. "I can at least give them their time now." Melinda couldn’t sleep so she got up and climbed out the window. Once more she sat on the roof. Looking up at the sky she felt saddened. "Can I really bring peace to our realms by marrying him?" Melinda's chest began to ache. There was always a price to using her powers. Whether it be blood or her own health. To get a better view of the stars she laid back. The coldness slowly consumed her body. It didn’t bother her. "Can he see the same stars? Can my people see the same stars?" She missed them. Though Helena and the others were with her she felt alone. She suddenly felt tired. Her whole body began to shiver. She saw something like dust fall in her silky hair. Dust? Her eyes felt heavy. She heard them before she saw them. The angelic sounds of fluttering wings. The last thing she saw before passing out was a woman with red eyes. As if piercing her soul.

Iris smiled as she caught the young princess. "There, there. I have you. You are in safe hands." She laughed at her own joke. Before she left she wrote a note that stated that the princess wont be back for some time. She put a bit of dust on it making the illusion that it had been written by the Princess. She then carried the young princess as she flew away. "Now those idiot angels will see real power. How dare they think I couldn't do this. Easy as pie." She grinned. She took Melinda to a house that seemed to be abandoned. She put Melinda on a table in the kitchen. "I guess I will have to wait for Fate now."

Helena smiled to herself as he bundled her up, snuggling comfortably up against him with the spike-free part of her fur. At least I'm not so cold now, that's nice, even if I'm still being protected. I am a bunny. Bunnies tend to be a little useless, even if they are spiky. she finally noticed, with intense enjoyment, that her ears had stopped twitching. "The twitch, the twitch, that irritating, maniacal itch, its gone, the poor, the rich, will all rejoice, it's gone, that twitch, that witch." She said in verse, quietly.
She laughed at bit at his shy nature. To someone as open with emotions as she was, it was cute. "If we are all lucky, I will change back before that is an issue. But, maybe we could all go to a festival. That would be nice. We could spend some time together, too. The two of us." she said, happily.

Helena heard something from the princess's room then, noting the apparent silence that followed, she jumped out of his arms, and on to the floor. "what happened? Melinda?" she didn't respond, so Helena ran to the other end of the hall, and rammed through the locked double doors, which someone else must have closed. Breaking the door down with her two horns, she found the room empty. But for blood red dust.

"Jake, stay at a distance. I think It might be poison that functions through inhalation. And the princess isn't here."

She calmed then, knowing she would need to in order to figure this out. She needed to deduce the kind of poison, but she would do so by sight- getting to near would be deadly. It was dull, and red, and appeared to still be settling. She decided it was a pulverized mixture of redwood and azaleas. THat would cause breathing problems, probably make her pretty tired. She found the note then, where it had been left. She read it and sighed. of course, she had no Idea it was written by an angel by the name of Iris.
"She didn't even know it was poison. I'm betting whoever scattered it left. they probably thought it was a fast reacting toxin. She's fine. we can rest."

Fate, an angel of little social standing, power of a level little higher than average, and nonexistent pride, had been there when iris had carried the girl off, to do a bit of extra work, taking a few things, closing the door and locking it. In addition to leaving her carefully written note.
Dear Helena,
I need to go outside, to take a walk. I swear, I am going to suffocate if I breathe in any more of the air in here. I'm going to sleep outside. don't be surprised if you don't see me until late tomorrow.

That was when Fate realized that Iris had already left a note.
"why does she never tell me anything?" she whispered, not angry, only sad. "Oh well" she grabbed her note then, and took off after Iris, catching up to her in the kitchen.
"Is the girl conscious?"

Iris smiled at Fate. "No. She is stuck in sleep. No matter how much she wants to wake up she wont. Not until the dust begins to fade that is." Iris observed the young princess with a sad look. For some reason she didnt understand what about the girl made her sad. Her expression as she sleeps is sad. "What shall we do with her? Kill her immediately or see what will happen next?" She said looking up at Fate.

"Kill her? I thought we were just gonna, you know, chain her up..." she said, scared, a bit worried. "lets wait. I don't really want to killl anyone that we don't have to." she was frightened out of her wits, but tried not to show it. "well, I know Cain wanted to tease Jack with her, or something like that, right?" For a moment, Fate thought she heard something outside. When she realized it was just a bird, she went to close the window.

"wouldn't want a pest getting in"
