Tonight was typical night for Uriel. He had spent most of the day sleeping or getting kicked around by his caretaker. Uriel was content though, despite the abuse. This was what he knew, and despite his appearance and his usual behavior he was more scared of running away than he was staying there. This was what he knew, he understood this, at least to a certain degree. His life had been the same pattern for a long time now, he was unsure of what to do if that suddenly changed.
The first time she spoke to him, it was the first day he began to question his existence. After every night he became more and more accustomed to her. Until he began to depend on her. She had given him a purpose, he would listen. He listened to her night after night, he would hold his head near the fence, and would let her soft caring hands stroke the fur behind his ears. He liked her, first human he ever let touch him.
Tonight was not a typical night for Uriel. Because tonight the world that he knew was about to be torn apart. It happened quickly and without notice. A scuffle at the front door, a few short screams that were quickly muffled. He had been sleeping upstairs near the window that faced the backyard. This was were he watched her from curiously and attentively. Uriel walked trotted down the stairs. Something smelled strange, the air was full of it. When he reached the first floor he saw something he had seen a thousand times, or had he?
The front door was open. Though it the man he acknowledged as his owner lay sleeping. His master lay on the ground. He slept in a pool of red liquid. His eyes were open. Uriel sniffed his master's body. There was something missing. His chest no longer moved, his eyes did not blink, nor move. He was dead, and Uriel knew it.
At first he felt sorrow, but it faded quickly. This man was never kind to him nor did he ever care. He felt sorrow because he was alone now.
A noise came from the opposing house. Uriel's ears twitched at the strange sound. Suddenly a scream. A strange feeling over came him at that moment. The girl that had recently acquired his curiosity. Who had giving his meaningless life a purpose. She was in pain and something inside him wanted to help her. His legs moved faster than they ever had before. The girls door was open. Through it he could smell that same scent, heavy and bad.
Jumping through the door he saw the origin of the smell. A drunken man, forcing his filthy hands upon her body. Uriel let out a loud bark, and began growling menacingly. His eyes began to glow. His fur shivered. Uriel grew twice his size at that moment. Without hesitating he sprung atop his prey, sinking his vicious teeth into disgusting flesh. The man tried to scream, but he was stopped by Uriel's tightening jaws. He had bit into the man's neck, and with one final squeeze, snapped it like a twig. Blood covered his teeth, backing away slowly. Uriel howled loudly.
