The atmosphere at the party was levitous and uplifted. A barber shop quartet was playing riverboat music near the aft of the huge yaucht, at the front a group of people were playing shuffleboard, and all around were a huge diversity of faces, some friends, some strangers, but most vaguely familiar from some meeting or other Tomas couldn't quite place.
He had left Abigail near the front of the boat to charm some of the wives and influencial women of Marius-Jacobs, while he related the events of Capetown to a few of his colleagues.
"Sounds like this Van der Merwe chap has some interesting ideas." said Cedrick; a skinny man in his late fifties with a greying Mestopheles styles goatee.
"I certainly thought so." Tomas said, nodding and taking a sip from his colourful cocktail, the name and contents of which he wasn't entirely sure. "He hasn't had quite the peer approval we need to take some of his latest projects on board, but frankly I think it's the way to go. Not to mention that taking on some ideas from the originating country would make for great PR, especially over there."
"Yes," said Justin; a balding Afro-Carribean man with half-moon glasses and an out-of-place Hawaiin shirt. "might be just as well for MJ to get a timely PR boost if what I read in the news is true."
Tomas coughed awkwardly as he wondered how to respond to that.
"Well," he said eventually, "of course Van der Merwe is involved with the company as a whole but he's primarily on the aerospace side. Since whast I think you're referring too applies to the weapons division, I'm not sure his involvement would help nor hinder the proceedings in that matter, for what very little I know about them."
"Very diplomatically put Tomas." Cedric laughed.
"Thomas?" said a third man, who's name was Art. "That's the name of the chap isn't it?"
"I believe so." Tomas said, grinning and shaking his head. "Marius-Jacobs employs almost nineteen thousand people so I daresay there's a few Thomas's."
As the conversation continued in a similar vein, Tomas wondered how his wife was getting on. The sooner he could get away from work talk and enjoy a bit of time with her the better.
