Otherworld Outcasts

Merlot's Bar lies deep in the shady recesses of the magical world. It's patrons are the scariest, creepiest, and most dangerous beings on this plane of reality. Tourists stay away and the weak hide in fear, because only the tough and brave can enter here. Walk inside and you'll find wicked step-mothers, cursed princes, bridge goblins, and angry giants. Oh, yeah... and you.

/-----------------/

Rules:

  • No godmodding or power-playing. Only give your character a reasonable amount of power, and give every character plenty of flaws.
  • Romance & violence are both allowed, to an extent. If it gets out of control, or overly pointless, the bouncer will kick your characters out.
  • Each player is allowed up to 3 characters.
  • Keep your characters creative and original. Your character should be different from everyone else's in both appearance and personality. We don't need 16 blond elves. This is the same for dark characters. The run-of-the-mill psychotic evil dude is boring.
  • Enjoy yourself and feel free to be a different as you want.

/-----------------/

Races:

Witches/Wizards - Humans who use 'magik'. Witches draw their power from the earth and they believe that magic should never be used to hurt another, only to protect yourself. Witches who have gone bad are called Sorcerers.

Warlocks - Warlocks are people born with magic in their blood and never have to learn it. They exist outside the good/bad argument between Witches and Sorcerers, and simply use their magic however they please. The word “warlock”, contrary to popular belief, does not just refer to males.

Sorcerers/Sorceresses - Humans who use 'sorcery'. Sorcerers typically draw their power from the night and from celestial objects. They're known for their powers of transformation and cursing.

Necromancers - Priests that perform powerful and terrible death magic. This usually involves raising soulless un-dead minions.

Vaudun Priests - Vaudun Priests specialize in the voodoo category of sorcery.

Elves - Beautiful human-like beings with pointy ears and acute senses. They're deeply tied to the earth, particularity forests, and able to perform some magic. Elves are inhumanly strong and fast.

Faeries - Known as the 'Gentry' or the 'Fair Folk', faeries are mischievous by nature. They are incapable of lying, and they are weak to iron. Faeries come in many forms. (For more information see the Faerie Wiki.) ((This may be any European faerie.))

Goblins - Gnarled little creatures that typically inhabit bridges and wells. They're greedy and they love riddles.

Dwarves - Human-like beings with acute senses that stand between three-foot and four-foot tall. They're known for their craftsmanship and their long beards. Dwarves are inhumanly strong.

Giants - Human-like beings with that are usually 15-18 feet in height. Giants like living in high elevation. Merlot's has a large outdoor eating area to accommodate giants.

Vampires - Blood-drinking beings that can't stand sunlight or garlic. Vampires cannot cross running water or be seen in mirrors, or intrude on private residences. Fire reduces them to ash, and they can’t enter holy ground. Merlot's supplies bottled blood for vampires.

Shape-shifter - Some shape-shifters can turn into any animal, some can only turn into one. Any shape-shifter whose change is tied to the lunar-cycles is known as a 'Were'.

Yōkai - Monsters and spirits from the far-east. These beings come in many different forms. (For more information see the Yōkai Wiki.)((This can be any far-eastern spirit.))

Dragons/Dragonkin - Large, winged reptilian creatures that are known to have magical properties and abilities, such as breathing fire and flying. They come in many forms.

Djinn - Also known as genies. They are said to usually occupy a parallel world to that of humans, but have crossed over before. Each djinn is assigned to a human to guard from birth.

Spirits - Undead people that roam the world of the living. (Demons and angels will be considered extreme types of good/bad spirits rather than separate beings.)

Merfolk - A general term for ocean-dwelling, sentient beings.

Merlot's Staff:

((2 'Barmaid' & 1 'Cook' positions are open. No application needed.))

Image
Name:
Merlot

Character Type:
NPC - Bartender

Age:
Unknown

Race:
Warlock

Physical Description:
Merlot is short, haggard, and old. His long white mane extends from a receding hairline, and his eyebrows are bushy enough to house small animals in. He has one eye that is sightless from a fight with a banshee, and the other is a creepy sea-green.

Merlot can often be seen wearing a cloak or a robe, as well as a pendant and/or several rings.

History:
Merlot's past is vastly unknown. He opened up his bar about 15 years ago and has kept the riffraff at bay with his creepy smile ever since. He's a good bartender and host, as long as you don't cause trouble, but if you tick him off then you'll find more than just alcohol in your drink.

Image
Name:
Caoimhe

Character Type:
NPC - Barmaid

Age:
167

Race:
Elf

Physical Description:
Caoimhe is one of the loveliest faces in Merlot's. Her long dark hair is always braided and her pretty eyes are framed by thick dark eyelashes. However, don't let that pretty face fool you, because behind it is the personality of a pit viper. If you mess with Caoimhe she's likely to bite your face off.

History:
Caoimhe may be much older than she looks, but she is still young in elf terms. She was born and raised in a forest, and lived there for nearly 100 years. However, after reaching maturity, Caoime left the forest in rebellion against Elven society. After about 50 years of wandering she settled down and began working at Merlot's. No one knows what she does in her spare time, but she often brings animals to work with her.

Image
Name:
Myrmidon "Myrm" Sledgefist

Character Type:
NPC - Bouncer

Age:
46

Race:
Dwarf

Physical Description:
Myrm might be short, but he's no weakling. 3'5 and 167 pounds of pure muscle, this guy won’t allow any destruction of the bar or harassment of the barmaids. He rarely washes his mess of wiry orange hair and beard; so, he kind of smells, and he can almost always be found sitting in a corner with a wood-cutter's axe.

History:
Myrm is well known as some of the best muscle-for hire around. He was once a blacksmith, but decided on entering the bodyguard profession after a few years of infuriating metal-pounding. He's been working as Merlot's bouncer for the last 3 years. The position of Bouncer is avoided by most since Merlot’s last bouncer was sent to the hospital with 15 broken bones, but Myrm defiantly has guts.

Character:

Feel free to use this as an example of a character sheet.

Image
Name:
Canjie

Character Type:
Active Character - Patron

Age:
335

Race:
Cat/Sorceress

Physical Description:
Canjie is not just any cat. Then again, you probably already noticed this because she can use magic and talk. Her long fur is always clumped and matted from the refusal to lick herself, and she usually wears a tail ring or a pentacle necklace. She doesn't get along well with most people (because she’s irritable); yet, she and Merlot seem to be close friends.

History:
Canjie's birth name was Maeva. Long ago she was one of the strongest sorceresses in the world, and her name was feared by every man, woman, and child. However, in her power Maeva became arrogant. She believed herself indestructible, and so she was reckless.

Details of the incident in question are blurry, but angry faeries, a messed up curse, and one really pissed off frog were involved. Now, Maeva is an immortal cat named Canjie.

Re: Otherworld Outcasts [OOC/Sign-Ups]

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby flickery on Mon Nov 09, 2009 2:10 pm

Name:
RaoulImage

Character Type:
Active Character-Patron/Cook

Age:
30

Race:
Human, cursed

Physical Description:
Raoul stands slightly taller than your average patron at 5' 7", gruff, muscled and oddly colored. He throws an uncaring glance at people who gawk at his unusual appearance, be it his stone hued complexion or wild, unkempt hair, then frowns to himself in a drink. Reluctant to explain his situation, he simply lives life as any other human being, with a few inconviniences. Every full moon, when the Sorceror's powers are strongest, he transforms into one of the many monsters he was cursed into before.

Out of neccessity, he usually wears a traveller's suit, a formal mix of cloth and cured animal hide with bits of metal here and there for armor. With a heavy sword in scabbard, he seeks to chop up sadistic sorcerors and dish out some very fine cuisine.

History:
Warrior, adventurer and part-time shapeshifter. Life is complicated enough as it already is, but it wasn't always so, it used to be simple. As a child, running about, playing, climbing. Till he was kidnapped by sorcerors who needed a dummy for their transformations, things they would not do on themselves till they have verified it safe on someone else. Raoul, was that someone else. But a mistake here, a fumble there, ten years after Raoul was caged -he ate his captors as a monster, out of revenge.

Though it still takes it's toll on him, there are rewards, as the many creatures, he has tasted 'foods' no one has ever tried and survived. Unknown mushrooms, mold, beasts of all kinds -anything considered edible. As a side effect, the many forms he was cursed with leaked some of their traits to his human side. A human side which still values a comfy bed and good ale, the more mundane pleasures of life.

@flickery - Completely and totally flipping-gee-awesome! My mind is blown! Accepted, obviously.

@Conquerer_Man - Take all the time you need. There is no rush. Actually, I need to run some errands anyways.

Also, I'm going to be incredibly upset if I don't get some stars for that first post. I spent so long spell-checking and color-coding that thing...

(If Mermaids are going to be added, then this is my character xD )

Image
Name:
Zeatha

Character Type:
Active Player- Patron

Age:
6000

Race:
Mermaid

Physical Description:
Zeatha stands at an imposing seven foot and eight inches. She does not have hair, but instead a mass of tentacles which tend to move of their own free will. Her skin is dark turquoise in colour (as are the tentacles which grow from her head), rubbery and covered in a thin layer of moisture. Her large, black, round eyes have no eyelids, but instead a translucent cover which flicks over her eyes to moisten them when not in water, much like a lizard. Possibly her most terrifying feature are the three rows of razor sharp, pointed teeth which are contained in her mouth. As her face is nearly flat, her nose is likewise and only slightly raised. Her nostrils are but slits. She has a slim, curvaceous figure, hands with long, webbed fingers and feet as the flippers of fish. An expert with the dark and mysterious arts of Black majik, she specialises in water magik.

History:
Zeatha grew up in The underwater kingdom of Acquair, many, many leagues to the East of Merlot's Bar and beyond the knowledge of all but the most wise and ancient. The Merfolk long resided in their watery kingdom, not concerned with the affairs of the land-dwellers and never leaving the water. Yet after the birth of Zeatha, things changed. Inquisitive from an early age, she was the first person ten thousand years to break the surface of the water and travel to the shore. Since then she has explored the dry land, discovering it's many mysteries. Since then, many more of her people have followed her, and the race that dissapeared below the sea returned once more. Still she travels the land, dressed in her green cloak and hood. Here exact purposes on land is unknown to all but her and a minority of her kind. Yet it is plain to see there is more to her than meets the eye, and meddling with her will earn more than a wet slap round the face.

Re: Otherworld Outcasts [OOC/Sign-Ups]

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Rhast Sencho on Mon Nov 09, 2009 7:19 pm

Image
Name:
Captain Rhast'Azhr-Einmahrei; alternatively, 'Rhast Sencho'

Character Type:
Active Player- Patron

Age:
Almost 23,000 standard years.

Race:
Amphithere
(with the ability to shift into a humanoid form and alter it freely.)

Physical Description:
Rhast, silver-skinned in his secondary, humanoid form stands at a slender eight feet in height, augmented by the height of his hair and a few inches as a result of his digitigrade posture. Among the initially notable features he possesses, are dual pairs of semi-rigid wings that he arranges around whatever flamboyant and grandiose outfit he's invented for the form like a cape. Should he pull a forelock of white and obsidian out of the way, a third eye is situated vertically in his forehead. On either side of this light, pearl-colored eye are two tattoos, I-Ching symbols for wind and water, respectively. Below that eye, his primary pair bears the same shade of pale in the iris, with heavy black inked sclera and pupils. However, as his mood shifts, so too do the colors of his eyes. His gaze is predominantly reptilian, and with vertical, slit pupils, casts capricious glances over what is observed, as if deeply amused by some grand and secret joke.

His ears are semi-rigid and finlike, and they serve their hearing function by similar vibration sensory methods as a normal human, though with much greater ability. As such, he's extremely given to certain tones, vibration frequencies, and pitches, and must guard heavily against a susceptibility to verbal manipulation or hypnotism. Rhast's teeth are uniform in size and tapered to harsh points...at least in the front. His molars are wide and flat, and much more indicative of his exclusively herbivorous diet. The pigmentation around his eyelids, lips, claws, and tongue is naturally dark, almost black in color. That tongue would be slit just less than halfway, typical of snakes. His face is fair, and seems to lack the age it carries. His expressions usually vary between playful and irresponsible, or at the least, irreverent; but on solemn occasions he wears grief or compassion with a distinct grace that only the wise and world-weary can manage.

As proper for his aquatic-reptile state of being, his form supports both a set of lungs and gills. However, do to the divergence of respiratory means, neither the lung nor the gills operate at full capacity and his physical stamina is somewhat low as a result. Additionally, there are a few other sets of smaller, less rigid fins on his elbows, wrists and ankles, which along with a prehensile tail, can be employed for highly demanding balance requirements. Rhast's arms are stunningly long, reaching past his primary and secondary knees, the latter being backwards jointed. A few patches of iridescent scales rings his neck, shoulders, wrists and ankles also. A long, graceful dorsal-like fin is situated between his wings. (May evoke imagery of a well-pampered veiltail Betta splendens.) His clothing and accessories are subject to change hourly; and like his kind often displays, he has a keen predilection for shiny objects...especially valuable ones.

History:
Rhast's creation was called and fueled by a particularly eccentric and talented wizard during the Autumn Ides centuries ago.
He was adopted into his summoner's family upon the marital union of his wizard-parent and a mortal. Unfortunately, his slightly feral nature prevented the mortal half of the union from influencing him to properly pursue a future exclusively on accruing profits.
As a result, when the clan's financial status deteriorated due to Rhast's adoptive father's careless ways, Rhast was charged with sabotaging the clan's well-being and imprisoned for five years.
He was exiled from his land of origin upon his release in the Autumn Ides of the fifth year,
and he celebrates the autumn season with a blend of merriment and introspection.
He took to pirating around that time, and chose to live in general isolation on his ship.
Since that time, centuries ago, he has also mastered the art of Summoning and is never seen without his Grimoire,
either floating beside him or on its hovering pedestal.

Re: Otherworld Outcasts [OOC/Sign-Ups]

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Tyro on Tue Nov 10, 2009 1:08 pm

Name:
Tyro

Character Type:
Active Character - Patron

Age:
Umm...At last count...19?

Race:
Kitsune (Yōkai)

Physical Description:
Three paragraphs of description is actually quite difficult as, well, a phrase has been invented to define exactly what we're dealing with here: Scruffy Teenager. Actually, I might end up going in strange circles, covering the same point over and over and over. Sorry but Tyro's clothing isn't the most remarkable. He's not the type to immediately stand out, as you'll find out in a sec...

So, lets start with the black shirt that he insists on wearing unbuttoned on top of a white T-shirt with black hems. Both are kept in reasonably good condition only because barely anything touches them. The sleeves of the shirt have been lengthened six times as Tyro's attempted to grow out of a look he's had for....two, no. Four! Four years. He's attached to it then again, any other clothing would have to be fire-proofed really...

His jeans tend to bare the full brunt of what ever he wades in. If something that doesn't go well with clothes, the usual place for it to land will he his jeans. Some of the stronger stains persist as a warning to those who paint on something or ware jeans slightly too long; the bottoms of his jeans had obviously been dragged through mud and such for years. But his trainers seemed brand new. The ebon material had a minimal amount of scuffs and scrapes.

History:
Boy, does Tyro have a history...More in its complexity rather than interest or length...I guess I should explain why Tyro's only around nineteen yet he's a Kitsune. You usually expect someone like him to be closer to 190 than 19.

When he was 15, his life should have ended. Slowly being destroyed, even pulled in two by a powerful force he wasn't strong enough to control. What was it? He's not going to say but the fact of the matter is that he was saved. His death was prevented using a Kitsune soul, which of course transformed Tyro into the same creature he is now. He was given the ability to save himself by a mentor that wanted him for something. Or you could argue that this mentor created something new out of what was left of the old. Whatever! The fact is that This Mentor, a Sorceress was looking for a way to give back in order to give thanks for her powers. Nothing is given for nothing. Tyro had a debt to pay...

Not that its really a problem...Tyro enjoys what he was instructed to do: become a hero. Kinda like five year-olds that want to become Power Rangers really...

This simple task has actually gained him plenty of friends, a family of around eight and plenty of enemies. One of the most notable of these enemies would be Lord Kyrios, an empire-builder and has appointed himself Tyro's nemesis. Tyro sees him as a pest.

At the moment, he spends his time travelling, hoping to help help out where he ends up. Don't worry if you've never heard of him: He's never heard of you.

Alright. All accepted so far, and sorry it's taken me so long to repond.

I've updated the species list to include: Spirits (Angel/Demons too), Genies, Dragons/Dragonkin, and Merfolk.

If there are anyother races I missed, please don't hesitate to PM me. I'm going to post a Roleplayers Wanted in a little bit to try and get a few more people, and then we'll start tonight. Is that OK with everyone?

Merlot's is known better among certain circles. Like the first post mentions, it's more of a place for the outcasts of the magical world. If you're an evil axe-mudering faerie, then you're more likely to go to Merlot's that some do-gooder pixie. Meaning, lot of 'normal' people are aware of the existance of Merlot's, but have no intrest in going there.

We're staring tonight, then? That suits me fine. I've set aside plenty of time to indulge in this, your lovely idea here.
Also, if you'll forgive my inexperience, are you going to create a separate thread when you mean to play, and under which forum?

It's fine to be late by a day or two. :]

Being late will actually help with the story me thinks, unless the gm has something else in plan because bars usually have customers coming in one after another at different times I guess and not all at once.

Unless the characters are in a party, then lol.

My computer died. Completely died. So dead, in fact, that I had to throw it out. This is my new computer, but I didn't get it until yesterday.

If any of you are still interested I ask you to please reply within the next 48 hours. If there are no replies by then, then I will officially end this thread.

Cool. Hey, Tryo.

So, I was thinking if one of the other people show up, then I'll go ahead and start the OC. If it's just you and me, then I'll start up a new RP. It'll be either the same one or a similar fantasy; I haven't decided yet.

What do you think?

OK. Great!

You still need to post a chara sheet, though. DX

When would you two want to start, and would you want to post a Players Wanted to lure a few more? Or, is it good like this?

Name:
Saul Avansche

Character Type:
Active character/Patron

Age:
300

Race:
Human/Necromancer

Physical Description:
Saul is a tall, and imposing man. He has short black hair that is slicked back with some kind of gel, leaving a small line of hair that goes down his forehead to his right eyebrow. Above his right eyebrow, is two small scars in the shapes of dots. His green eyes are deep and seem to stare into a persons very soul with a cold, piercing glare. He wears a long, black trench coat that has gold trimming around it. On the back of the coat is a beautiful golden picture of a lion's head with matching Lion's head cuff links. His trousers are dark brown and made of a strange and strong fabric. He wears large boots held together by tiny bones that are likely from something's finger. His shirt is a brown, sleeveless coat, and under that, a white shirt. On his belt is a variety of small bags, each with a different runic symbol on them, and each containing various necromantic items used for spells and rituals. Also on his belt is a long and black Flyssa sword, it's blade looks as dangerous as it is in Saul's hands, and is lined with a powerful poison.

History:
Saul was born a simple farmers son. His father owned a lot of land that had been in their family for literally thousands of years, but little did Saul know that it was no ordinary place, it was there to protect something.
One night, when Saul was just a 10 year old boy, he found a strange trapdoor in the floor of his barn that he had never seen or even heard of before. It opened easily and lead down into a small room with stone walls. All around the room were bookcases filled with huge books that looked older than even his grandfather. There was a desk with pages strewn across it, showing strange drawings of men that had been mutilated. Saul soon learned that these books all held spells, rituals, and knowledge that belonged to a necromancer. To this day Saul suspects that necromancer was an ancestor of his, but he really doesn't know for sure. Saul would spend all his time in that little room until he was 20 and had every page, every glyph, every chant and every letter memorised. He prepared himself and took a sharp blade to his arm. He sliced it open and let his blood spill to the floor. He used that blood to summon a demonic, three-headed snake that could speak directly into Saul's mind. He asked the snake to be his servant and it was enraged that a human would ask such a thing. In anger it bit him right on his forehead, and somehow... Saul survived. He awoke three years later, perfectly healthy with a new power through his veins. The power... of a necromancer.

Boy am I happy to be using Saul again. Haven't used this character for a LOOONNNGGG time, now. ^_^ Btw, steal fire, I believe the quotes in your sig are from Mitch Hedberg, is that right? Sorry if i spelled his name wrong :P
And on the first day Man created God in his own image.

Name:
Ul`Reglhe

Character Type:
Active Character/Patron

Age:
Immemorial

Race:
Godkin

Physical Description:
Ul`Reglhe is an immense being. His normal form stands 200 feet tall and weighs in the hundreds of tons. This though this is not his only form. It is with in his powers to change his size and form. This secondary form is similar to his larger form with the exception of size and weight. He also has fewer tendrils around his mouth in his smaller form. Due to his odd appearance, his attire is usually loose, large fitting to keep his form vague to those who are unaware of these otherworlders. His preferred clothing is a large black velvet robe and hood that drapes over his body like a that of a cover over a statue yet to be unveiled.

History:
Ul`Reglhe is part of a race of deity like beings known through out time as the Godkin. Their large stature and great strength inspired the many myths and religions around the world. Though they are wielders of great power, they tend to be slow and cumbersome due to their great age and massive size. Many of them are benevolent beings who do good when it is with in their power. Others are apathetic towards the ongoings of the mortals world. Then there are some who are malevolent and diabolical, who seek the enslavement or destruction of the lesser races, as they like to call those who are not Godkin. This leads to a balance or power between these great beings, each usually having rival or counterpart.

Ul'Reglhe's domain is that of the sea. His home is deep in the abyss of the ocean, protected from the surface world by a veil of unknown and enigma. He normal prefers the seclusion of his great cambers, but he miss out on the chaos that the surface world brings upon it’s self. Ul`Reglhe is apathetic towards the plight of man and usually has no other interactions with his kind. He does have a small rivalry with Gaia, the Godkin of land, mainly due to her domain encroaching on his as erosion washes land mass into the ocean.

He makes his journey from his home to Merlot’s bar once every few decades, usaly staying for a year or two. His tab is rather large, and had only been paid off once, in which Merlot received a large payment of gold and treasures from beneath the ocean waves. He enjoys his time on the surface, and rather enjoys watching the human news while there.

Notes:

- He also goes by the name Ul (ool)

- He has a slight temper which flairs when he is bothered

- Ul’Reglhe, though a being of great age, is still prone to accidents, misunderstandings, and the occasional infatuation.
