Captain Terrel Comanay strode across the deck, his leather boots making soft 'thunk' sounds on the planks. It was a fine morning to set out. A fine morning indeed, the sky was clear and the sun was still continuing its glorious appearance rising above the horison, the tide was coming in, and the wind was right, spraying the salt sea into his face.

Terrel breathed in slowly, his white cat-ears twisting back to catch the sounds of the port behind him. The town was starting to wake up, though he doubted it ever slept. This law-forsaken rock was one of many small refuges for pirates, but this one was long since deserted. The navy thought it was cleaned out, and now, it was Nightshark territory

Not even fellow buccaneers cared to share a tortuga with Terrel and his crew of monsters. Rumour increased their heinous deeds tenfold, and there werent many who cared to get into a toussle with such unnatural pirates. Terrel let off a sigh and turned around to look at their haven. Not much, a tavern well-stocked with rum, a few shacks, taverns, and other places where a gentleman of fortune could entertain himself.

Terrel had done his partying aboard the Nightshark. He didn't like going on land. Last time he'd been shorebound he'd been in such indescribable pain that even he winced to remember it. There were a few ont he ship who felt like he did, and between them they'd raised hell on deck. He still probably looked rather disheveled, his shoulder-length orange hair was rathe rmessy, and at some point he'd apparently gotten warm or something, because his shirt was hanging over a rail. His head hurt a little, too; He would have to restock the rum supply before they set out. But speaking of seting out...

"HOY! Avast there, Isaks!" he hollered as he descended to the lower deck quickly. A sleepy headed pirate poked his head out a doorway, the sailor was looking completely human this morning, but he'd probably change through the day back into his half-animal form. Terrel's orange tail twitched impatiently as he set his fists on his hips "Get your sorry self onto the shore and rally the crew, we're leaving" Terrel barked, getting a sleepy nod as Isaks stumbled past him, Terrel followed him up the steps and watched him scurry down the gangplank and into the town. The bloody drunkard would take forever to rally everyone by himself, though.

A grin touched Terrel's face as he returned to deck, and he pushed his long hair back out of his eyes. He ought to tie the orange strands back, but not just now. Now he had other things to do. He made his way to the stern of the ship, stepping over a passed-out pirate, before kicking him in the gut to wake him up. At the back of the ship was a gong. Most people used cannons to get attention, but Terrel didn't like wasting powder when supplies were so hard to get, and anyway, it was a trademark. People shivered when they heard that gong on the seas, there was only one ship that used it, and Terrel doubted there was a sailor anywhere who could stand without shaking in his boots when the Nightshark came over the horizon.

He found the rod for the gong in a second, and swung it at the metal disc with all his might, a resounding crash shook the early morning peace with the wordless call to deck.

A young woman ran gracefully onto the ship nearly running into the captain but coming to a stop seconds. She was tall for a woman, taller than most of the pirates of Nightshark. She wore a pair of dark breeches, black boots, making her taller than she already was, with a white blouse and her silver hair falling down her back till it ended at her waist.the colour of her hair was not the only unusual thing about her, her ears were tapered and longer than usual. Unlike the captain she looked clean and well groomed having spent the night on land and not partying.

"Hello Captain are we leaving now?" she looked around curiosly to see where the rest of the crew were. She saw a few of the crew appearing looking as if they were only half awake. "It must have been some party last night"

Balgair slowly lifted his pounding head from the table, the short red hair the covered his head was stiff from spilled rum, that Balgair had been laying. His large bushy red tail twitched in tempo with the pounding in Balgair's head, the white tip of the tail waving like a flag. He blinked his yellow fox like eyes several time, focusing his vision. Balgair stretched his toes as much as he could, his feet like elongated paws, black toes and red fur going up his calves. The loose white pants were a little dirty from weeks of wear and his green shirt had it's share of wrinkles.

Balgair stood, still shaking his head. He could have sworn he heard the gong, a signal to return to the Nightshark. A letter tucked in the small of his back crinkled a little and Balgair smiled. The letter had come from a small settlement in the northern Caribbean. The men from Balgair's village had regained political control of the island and now Balgair was welcome to return at any time and stay as long as he wished. Balgair wasn't ready to give up the roving pirate life anytie soon, but it was good to know he had a home to returned to.

Balgair started jogging back towards the dock, somethings missing a step and wobbling. He really only walk and ran on the ball of his feet, if you judged by human standards but he walked on most of his feet by fox standards.

Moss was below decks making sure the last of the rum and powder where stored properly. the gong sounded meaning they where heading of shortly, about time im sick of this port and the sight of land moss thought. the powder was straped in and the rum brought to the bottom most decks and stored, they had all the food they would need as well as water for those who did not drink rum, he also made sure to restock the medical supplies and personal weapon stores, "alright you scurvy dogs head above decks and tend to the capt'n you've all that need be done done here" he shouted at the men loading the ship, as he walked above decks he cheacked every knot holding in the cargo and the cannons. once he was above decks he looked around for the captain he was not hard to find standing near the gong, he walked up to the gong and stood near the captain " do yea be needin anything before we set sail or shall i just go and plot a course?" he asked
Up from the sea, from underground
Down from the sky, they're all around
They will return: mankind will learn
New kinds of fear when they are here

~~ the Carol of the old ones
They will reclaim all in their name;
Hopes turn to black when they come back and
Madness will reign, terror and pain
Woes without end where they extend.

~~ the Carol of the old ones

"Indeed, missy, now go make yourself useful" Terrel told the woman who had very nearly run into him. His voice was stern, he didn't appreciate much more than a moderate level of disorder on his ship. He noted the crew slowly oozing from the liquor holes where they'd drunk the night away and onto the Nightshark with a smug smile. It was a fair decent sized crew. He snapped back to reality as Moss spoke to him, he turned to face the quartermaster with a decidedly feline slyness to his grin "Aye, we can set off as soon as every mothers son of a sea rat is aboard, now lets snap it up a bit, eh? I don't want to miss the tide" he responded to the half-shark's question, his eyes growing bright "I've heard wind of good pickings further south, I'm sure you have as well, I'll leave the course to you as always" he added concerning their destination. Apparently some country in the orient was about doubling their exports, that meant lots of fat ships toddling out of their ports loaded with precious cargoes.

Balgair walked up the gangplank of the Nightshark, after stopping at a rain barrel and washing the rum from his hair. Balgair had also washed his face in the rain water and rinsed his mouth. Balgair had left his weapons on board in the Nightshark, inside his cabin, two light sabers and a musketoon. Balgair also carried a dagger in his belt. He yawned has he boarded and looked around to see how many of his shipmates were already aboard.

"I say mate, ye're looking the worse for wear" Terrel commented at a level meant for Balgair to hear, leaning against the mainmast with his arms folded across his chest and one blue eye open, he'd left Moss to the course-planning and was keeping an eye on the bustle of the various crewmen on deck, he'd also noted his three-cornered tricone hat lying where he'd apparently doffed it in some manner the night before, and it was pulled rather too far forward, shadowing most of his face. and had noticed the haggard condition of his first mate.

"Aye" said Balgair, "But that be what ye get for sleeping in a pool of rum and having more then ye're fair share of a barrel.....or two." Balgair came to stand a few feet from Terrel and cracked his neck. As bad as Balgair looked, his tail looked as great as it always did, shinny and soft to the touch. 'Where we be head for capt'in?" asked Balgair, straighting the winkles of his shirt.

"The orient, with any luck we can get a good picking off of the exports increase" Terrel replied, looking over Balgair. His tale would explain the especial rowdiness he'd heard last night, but last night was behind them, and it was today that excited him to the point of his cat's tail waving with anticipation. He suddenly snapped his head to the side to snap at a deckhand who seemed to be dozing off "OY! Pull yerself together you sorry excuse for a sailor! On yer feet! Put your wits back in your 'ead before I whip 'em back in!"
Most of his threats were empty, of course, but he wasn't afraid to follow through with a punishment when it was called for, adn that was mostly what kept him respected in these parts despite his being younger even than most of his officers. People who had challenged him in the past knew he knew how to use the saber by his side, too. "How long can it possibly take a man to wake up?" he grumbled, turning his attention back to Balgair

"Depends on how much rum he as had" said Balgair, grinning, "And if he found a pretty whore to spend the rest of the night with." As Balgair grinned, his canines showed. They were longer then a humans and he had an extra pair on each jaw. "So are we goin' after silk?" asked Balgair, "Or spices or gems?"

Re: A 'Tail' of Pirates

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Skallagrim on Sun Feb 24, 2008 4:54 am

The thunderous roar of the heavy ship guns barked twice more before Captain Erskine McTammany signaled the master gunner to cease fire. The royal marine musketeers stood ready, their weapons trained on the deck of the damaged and burning pirate skiff. Raising his telescope to his honey-colored eye, Captain McTammany observed the dead and dying abominations strewn across the deck.

A thin, cruel smile crossed his lips as he raised his hand, “Colonel, prepare to fire.” The marine colonel prepped his men, and waited. The Castella drifted closer to the skiff. The masts had been cut down by the powerful guns of the navel vessel. They had come upon the skiff hiding in a bay, believing they had eluded the ship that was hunting them.
Seeing the disgusting creature that waved at him, he focused on it, a rabbit type of beast. By appearances it was the first mate, the captain probably dead. A single voice carried on the breeze. Lowering his hand slowly he strained to hear what was said.

“We surrender! We throw ourselves on the mercy of the crown!”
came the lisping, mocking sound. Lowering his telescope, Captain McTammany looked at the assembled officers with him on the helm deck. His voice steady and grim, “Gentlemen, our piratical friend there has asked to surrender to us. Do we have room for them in the hold?” After a few seconds, the reply came, “We do not Captain, nor do we have a prize crew to sail that damaged ship. From here it appears we’d have to spend several weeks repairing the skiff for proper sail.” Several of the officers voiced agreement of the assessment made.

Nodding the captain turned back to the floating wreck, just off his starboard, the poor little bunny standing there. Waiting, hoping.

Captain McTammany raised his hand and said aloud, “Fire at will. Prepare to sink the pirate skiff. Send them all to hell.” As his hand descended the ripple of musket fire filled the morning air. Screams and shouts, a few pops of return fire, then silence. Collapsing his telescope he commanded absently as he descended the wide plank steps, “Sink it.”
As the door to his quarters closed, the sounds of the guns commenced again, shouting rage and steel twice more before they silenced, and a command was given.

“Hoist the sails and let her run before the wind.”

Re: A 'Tail' of Pirates

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby DJAtomika on Sun Feb 24, 2008 8:00 am

Ebony, refusing to take shore leave at this stop, woke up in his hammock below deck. The rousing smell of seawater, tar and dry gunpowder, among other smells, woke him almost immediately.

As he rubbed the sleep from his eyes and tied the bandanna around his head, he heard the gong sound, calling for all remaining members of the crew to report back to the ship.

Ebony walked up onto deck, giving a few sleepy greetings to fellow crewmen who were likewise sleepy or hungover, or both. As he walked along the deck, he caught a snippet of a conversation between Captain Terrel and First Mate Balgair. Apparently, their next destination was the Orient, to stop ships travelling between the Silk Road of the Sea and taking their cargo. Ah... The pirate's life. Ever so free and easy...

Ebony's white, almost silvery tail swished back and forth as he looked around for something to do. Then he decided to go back into the cargo hold and double check their cargo, just in case some thieves had come in the night to take the precious loot that they had taken from some Arabian traders a few days before. Spices, valuable gems and silk were a valuable item to have in one's hold, Ebony though to himself, but who would be stupid enough to steal that from a pirate ship, especially the Nightshark.

As he walked around with a list of cargo written on a sheet of paper, he checked off each cargo item with a small scratch of his claw. As he rounded the last bits and pieces of the cargo, he noticed an anomaly. Hm. We're supposed to have six bags of.... what's it called... ah, tumeric. There's only four here... And the barrels of pitch, there's only three. There's supposed to be five. Hmm... Interesting. Better tell the captain.

As Ebony folded up the list and stuffed it into a pocket of his pants, he walked up the steps, narrowly missing another crewman coming down with a half-full bucket of murky water and a rag.

Ebony walked briskly to the captain, tail swishing back and forth with each step.

'Cap'n. There's a problem down in the hold. We're missing some cargo, and by the looks of it, some dog-blasted locals took them.' Ebony handed Captain Terrel the list, on which the missing cargo was marked.

'We're missing two sacks of that Arabian spice tumeric, a barrel of pitch, a sack of oranges and some spare cloth to patch up the sails. What do ye make of that cap'n?'

"Whatever it is thats dumb enough to get in our way is what we be after" Terrel replied with a grin "And aye, that would have a way of scrambling a man's wits". He had barely finished talking when Ebony came up, spouting something about hiown personal inventory "What I make of it is that you are depriving my quartermaster of his work" Terrel growled, snatching the list out of Ebony's hand, and scanning it up and down before handing it back "Ye give this over to Mister Moss, and then ye give yerself over to getting this half-rotted bark out of port! Bloody hell man does no man here know his work? If ye need a reminder I can always knock it into your head myself!"

"Aye Captain" said Balgair, "There be many things to scrambling a man's wits but few as pleasurable as a good drink, pretty face or a large treasure for the taking." "Though" thought Balgair, "The sight of home is one of them." As Ebony came to bother Terrel with his list of things missing, Balgair gave him a disapproving look.

Re: A 'Tail' of Pirates

The naval ship sliced through the azure water. The sails billowed full. The crew worked with a practiced and deadly efficiency. In his quarters Captain McTammany removed his powdered wig and hat, his coat and sword belt. Laying them all on the table in his room. Pulling a chart from the rolls in the stash he laid it out before him.

The West Indies was indeed a vast place, and a place where the Nightshark might prey on vessels and ports unprepared to face the onslaught of the abominations that crewed it. Spotting a small isle he tapped it a few times, then went to the extremely well adorned and carved door. Opening it he felt the breeze was through his clothes and over his body, ruffling his hair. Stepping forward he looked for Galen, it would be almost impossible to miss the massive wall of a man.

Galen had been a good friend, a life long friend who had almost given his life for Erskine. Not being able to spot the giant among the crew he hollered and passed the word, “When you see Mr. Tarskius, tell him that I would enjoy a word with him.” The crew took up the call and passed it on.

Turning back into the small cabin, Captain he may be, he never appointed to many luxuries to himself, turning over his quarters to the surgeon and his apprentice, taking the old surgeons quarters. He had learned last year when he had suffered a huge amount of wounded with an animal crewed pirate ship that the surgeon didn’t have enough room and lost a few due to that fact.

Closing the door again he made his way to the table, the sway of the ship caused him to brace himself as the ship sliced atop and through a large wave. God he loved sailing, nothing like it in the world.

Peering down at the map again he looked at the island. If he were hiding and seeking a safe harbor he’d have gone there himself, “Why haven’t any of the naval frigates spotted or heard rumors of the Nightshark in the last week? It really didn’t matter they were bound to be caught sooner or later.”

Looking up he waited for Galen, he had to run the idea across him. Galen had a good head on his shoulders, and often could see things that Erskine missed.

moss plotted for a god hour before realizing that if the information was correct they may need a place to store surpluses items or to hide away from other ships, this reminded him of an island he once was at, they spoke nearly the same language as far as he could tell and there were a couple pirates that spoke English that he new of, besides the crew they were the closest thing to friends he had. he plotted a course for there first and he realized the charts gave it a name, japan. after another hour he had finished plotting the course and went out to see what was going on out side the ship. he saw ebony walking across the deck with a piece of paper. i didn't know that boy could read or write for that matter, i wonder what he's up to, probably no good but thats for the captain to decide he thought "oi capt'n I've finished planning t'e course and be ready to make sail as soon as ye give the command." he shouted across the decks

Erika leaned againest the rail of the ship, glad for a break from the work. She loved being a pirate. Though she was a girl, she was a pirate as much as any man. The ocean's spray bounced up and glinted in the sunlight. It landed on Erika's face and she wiped it away. Her black boots were thumping along to a pirate's tune in her head. Her brake was soon over and Erika decided to inspect the sails.
