'Til death do us part.'
It's a lovely sentiment.
Every human, immortal or not,
has their angels and their demons.
【Sarcastic】 ✧ 【Self-Possessed】 ✧ 【Protective】 ✧ 【Good-Humoured】
Nick isn’t someone who wears his heart on his sleeve, especially when it comes to negative emotions. For the most part, he is a self-possessed individual and he likes to keep it that way. He prefers to keep his strongest emotions under lock and key, not wanting to display anger or sadness, especially in front of the other pets or Sabine. Instead, Nick will act as if he isn’t bothered, though after some time it will be obvious that he’s not quite himself. If given the opportunity, he’ll opt to take a walk to clear his thoughts or retreat to his room. He has a tendency to avoid situations and conversations which he finds unfavourable.
It isn’t uncommon to see the First smiling or laughing, as he has a happy disposition. This hasn’t change his entire life, as he’s always been a good humoured fellow. He is able to enjoy life, even when it throws curveballs at him. He enjoys the world around him and living too much for him to feel down most of the time. However, this has also instilled a deep fear of death within him.
When it comes to humour he favours the use of sarcasm— be it for light teasing or a scathing reply. He normally means no harm in his comments, but they are apt to offend at times. As such, he doesn’t take offense to any sarcastic comments aimed at him unless it’s noticeably malicious.
While he does need his alone time, he enjoys flitting around the house to see what the other pets or Sabine are up to. He views the household and its odd collection of characters as his family, after being separated from his wife and son centuries ago. They may not always want to talk to him, but Nick will still make the effort to interact with them. Whenever he bakes, he’ll go in search of each person in the house to offer them a treat.
Given that he sees the group as his family, he feels the need to protect them from any harm that may come their way. In most cases the harm comes in the form of a furious Sabine. If nearby when Sabine goes into a fit of rage, Nick will try to protect the other pets from the demon’s fury. As the oldest of the pets, he feels it is his job to guard the others from harm. He also attributes his protective nature to his fatherly instincts, though he has was a father for only a short time.
For awhile, he believed that he could reason with an angry Sabine or was at less risk of being attacked due to his relationship with the demon. While this has proved false, it has not diminished the love the First has for the one who saved him. Though he will admit (to himself) that he does harbour a small romantic attraction towards the demon, Nicholas foremost views Sabine as an everlasting friend. He is forever grateful that he was saved by the demon. For twenty years, it was the two of them, during which they bonded strongly. That bond has remained strong, despite Sabine’s violent tendencies. Nick admits that Sabine does get out of hand, but has become used to his forgetfulness. He uses this and the demon’s sincere remorse as an excuse that Sabine is not a monster, merely someone who needs to deal with their anger, albeit in a highly destructive way. Truthfully, he’s turned a blind eye to Sabine’s descent into madness. Nick has a tendency to slowly let go of the past and with a limitless amount of time to do so, it isn’t surprising how long it’s taking him. He still sees Sabine as he was in the beginning— just a lonely demon looking to love and be loved.
Nicholas has a bit of a pride issue due to being the first of the pets. He sees himself as being the best and favourite pet of Sabine. While he won’t say it out loud, he certainly thinks it. He’s jealous when Sabine’s attention falls on anther pet when he wants it or if the two were busy doing something. However, he won’t fight against the other pet. Instead, his mood will sour and he’ll go do something else to ease his mind.
'A picture is worth a thousand words.’
I think I might be worth a little more than that.
Nick stands at 5’10” and weighs around 170 lbs. Though not immediately apparent, he has an athletic build and is quite muscular underneath his pretty clothes. He no longer works in the fields, but he still has considerable strength (especially in his arms).
His messy black hair is a stark contrast to his fair skin. His hair hangs to the base of his neck while his bangs reach to just below his olive green eyes at their longest point. The sections of hair above his eyes are cut slightly shorter so as not to interfere with his vision. While Nicholas normally keeps his hair in its messy, swishy state, there are times where he opts to pull his hair back into a small ponytail. He will secure the ponytail with a ribbon, tying it into a neat bow and making sure his bangs are out of the way.
Sabine’s blood has faded most of the scars on his body. Those that are not are from fresher wounds. However, Nicholas’s birthmarks remain the same as when he was mortal. There is a small, round birthmark on his left forearm. Another birthmark can be found at the top of his right knee. A third is located on his right thigh. All of his birthmarks are slightly darker than his skin.
Nicholas's attire can be most readily identified with that seen in the 1700's. He is most often seen in a white collared shirt, a cravat, a knee length black jacket with a white trim, black trousers, and black boots. Sometimes he will wear white gloves and/or a black hat— it depends on his mood. He aims to look poised. With Sabine having bought his clothes in the previous century, Nick takes great care not to tear or dirty them. If he is ever wearing just trousers and a shirt, it’s likely because he’s doing some sort of physical labour or he’s just woken up.
Stars seem free, but they too are fixed in place.
Yet they shine brightly, happily.
【Sabine】 ▬▬▬ Nicholas is grateful to Sabine for saving his life and would do almost anything for him. The two get along quite nicely, having been together for so long.
【Sweets】 ▬▬▬ He’s always had quite the sweet tooth and was never one to turn down a sweet treat. Despite not requiring human food to live, he still indulges in sweets often. He just can’t live without them.
【Animals】 ▬▬▬ Nick loves any animal that isn’t an insect or snake. He has a pet Chow Chow and a pigeon, both of which he loves dearly. 【The Stars】 ▬▬▬ He loves to just look up at the stars. They’re so beautiful, so mysterious, and they’ve always captured his attention.
【Reading】 ▬▬▬ It passes the time and stimulates the mind.
【Baking】 ▬▬▬ Indigo taught Nick to bake after finding out much he loves sweets. As a result, he loves baking treats for himself and the other pets (with an apron on, of course).
【Smoking】 ▬▬▬ Nick will smoke a cigarette or pipe every so often, though he prefers cigarettes. If debating on whether to smoke or not, it’s common to see him with an unlit cigarette resting in his mouth.
【Being Injured】 ▬▬▬ Though he knows he need not fear death from injury, it still doesn’t take away the pain or general unpleasantness of being injured.
【Thunderstorms】 ▬▬▬ The combination of lightning and thunder (and at times heavy rain) unsettles him.
【Coffee】 ▬▬▬ It’s too bitter for his liking.
【Insects】 ▬▬▬ They are annoying. They seem to enjoy buzzing in his ear and coming back after he’s swatted at them.
【Losing Sabine】 ▬▬▬ Sabine has been a part of Nicholas’s life for so long and is Nicholas’s best friend. He cannot imagine life without the demon, nor would he be alive without him. To lose Sabine would mean inevitable death, something Nick has been avoiding for centuries.
【Dying】 ▬▬▬ To die would mean to lose Sabine, slowly starve to death, and face whatever comes after life. All of these and the concept of no longer being are all terrifying to him.
【Snakes】 ▬▬▬ He finds them creepy. If he sees a snake he will run the other way and ask someone else to kill it.
It may be the past,
but it’s still a place I visit.
Nicholas was the fifth of seven children born to Edmund and Beatrix Sartre. Preceding him were his sisters Ellen, Isabel, and Elizabeth as well as two brothers, Simon and Christopher. By the time Nicholas was born, Simon and Ellen had died of illness. A couple years after him, his twin brothers Adam and Alexander would be born.
The family were serfs, farmers bound to work for the lord of the land they lived on. Edmund and Christopher would work in the fields while Beatrix and her daughters would stay at home, caring for the younger children, cleaning the house, and preparing food. It wasn’t a perfect life, but Nick loved it all the same. The family had a strong bond and were happy together. To him, this was greater than being a royal.
In due time, Nicholas joined his older brother and father out in the fields, working to maintain the land and yield a successful harvest. It was difficult and at times rather boring, but it meant his family could live peacefully.
All of his older siblings were married by the time he was 16. Nicholas was not married until he was 20 and like almost all marriages at the time, it was arranged. He was married to a girl named Rose, who was four years his junior. The two had not met prior to their wedding. Despite this, they formed a strong bond. The couple had a son, William, two years later.
Life was going just fine for Nicholas until one fateful day in September. With his lord’s permission, he was on his way to another town in order to sell some cattle. It took a full day to travel to the village, resulting in him arriving at dusk. While still on the outskirts of the village, he was attacked and beaten by robbers. He was left lying unconscious on the road.
Nicholas awoke to find himself far from home and in the company of a strange man named Sabine. As he would soon find out, the demon had saved him from death. Of course, neither were expecting the human to become immortal like the one who saved him or to rely on Sabine’s blood to continue living. It was an odd arrangement, but one that Nick was forced to became used to.
He was never bitter about the situation, but he certainly became more used to it as the years progressed. In the beginning, it was a bit of a shock. To be saved by a demon? What had he done in life to be captured by something so wicked? Yet Sabine was so kind to him, willing to provide him with companionship and shelter. He was not the hellish demon he’d been told about, but rather just a lonely soul.
Despite Sabine’s love for him, Nick still missed his wife and son. With him being the first human companion Sabine had, the demon let the human visit his family from time to time. But after some time, Sabine denied Nick’s requests to visit them. He was jealous of the mortal humans for taking attention away from him. He also wanted to protect his first pet from the heartbreak of seeing his family grow old while he remained the same. Despite this, Nick still does think of his family. He knows they’re long dead, but he still has trouble letting them go.
Shortly after his last visit with his family, Sabine slipped some blood into Indigo’s drink and brought his second pet home. Truthfully, Nick was horrified by what his demon friend had done. It was understandable that Sabine had saved his life, but to simply steal a human away was certainly not ethical. The First confronted the demon about it, to which Sabine explained he only wanted to help her. Nothing could be done at this point and so Nick moved on. Sabine continued to collect pets, with Nick repeatedly telling him that he shouldn’t be forcing immortality onto the other humans. It fell on forgetful ears and by the time the Sixth was brought in, Nicholas no longer bothered.
The house grew over the centuries, the group moved from town to town. It’s a routine Nicholas has become used to after years and years, something he accepts as part of his existence. He’s perfectly content living with the other pets and Sabine. The idea of spending an eternity with them isn’t something he finds terribly worrisome.

"I am who I am and I am happy with that. I'm no monster, merely a man with a bit of a different story than the rest. I see myself as a friend, a protector, an immortal, and a bit of a mystery."
Nicholas has a pretty high opinion of himself, which is in no way helped by his status as the first pet and one of Sabine's closest companions. His pride isn't very evident, but it is certainly there. He's fairly comfortable with who he is, viewing himself as a good man in both his mortal past and his immortal present. However, he does have issues regarding his sexuality. Though he was married and loved his wife, he finds that he has occasional romantic feelings towards two of the other males in the house. He is confused by this, having been taught that homosexuality is wrong. Yet he lives with a demon in a house of immortal humans, so how righteous can he really be? It certainly is a dilemma for him, as he has no idea how to deal with these strange and uncomfortable feelings.

”Little Indigo… I remember when Sabine first brought her home. She was so scared of him. I tried to assure her everything would be alright. I protected her from Sabine’s anger as best I could. I still do, though she seems not to want it. She’s certainly grown into someone strong and independent, but I cannot help but miss the old days when we were good friends. Perhaps it’s because I still view her as a defenseless little sister. Nevertheless, we’ve grown apart quite a bit. She’s not the biggest fan of Sabine— she thinks that I shouldn’t be either— but I don’t want that to get in the way of our friendship. Unfortunately, it has. Indigo is still a little sister to me, albeit one that has flown from the nest we once shared.”
Indigo and Nick have a complicated relationship. When Indigo was first turned by Sabine, she clung to Nick for mental support. He would comfort her and protect her from Sabine’s wrath the few times it would bubble up. As the years have passed Indigo has come to become more independent, quirky, and Sabine-hating. This inevitably led to a shift in their friendship, but even after all these years Nick still views Indigo as a little sister whom he cares for deeply. He still holds onto the quieter, simpler times and can’t help but wish he could go back to when the two were closer. He’s not sure if Indigo feels the same way, but is confident that she at least views him a friend. He’s tolerant of her pranks, her sarcasm, and the rest of her quirks as he usually finds each of these things amusing instead of annoying. She continually tries to convince him that the demon is someone to be hated, not loved, a point which doesn’t seem to be getting to him. It’s not a conversation he likes to have though. The years have passed and Indigo’s personality and mindset have shifted, but Nick still treats her with the same kindness as the day he first met her.

Nicholas and Natalia are not friends in the slightest. Given his love of Sabine, Nick was not particularly pleased by Nattia’s attachment to the demon when she first arrived. This hasn’t changed. The First is sometimes jealous of her, knowing that she spends a good deal of time with Sabine. He regards her as competition, though he’ll never say that out loud. Though the two don’t get along, Nick will still act as civilly as possible towards her. Of course, the extent of this civility is often questionable.

Nicholas is unsure of Lonan. He finds the other young man to be unsettlingly quiet and glum. He has difficulty understand why Lonan is always moping about, given their very different views on Sabine. While Nick has never really sat down to talk with Lonan, nor Lonan with him, the First acts kindly towards the Fourth should the two find themselves interacting. Nick is happy to offer him a cookie or pastry. Still, each is hesitant of the other.

Nicholas and Imogen aren’t exactly friends but they certainly aren’t sworn enemies either. Imogen makes a point of letting Nick know just how she feels about his relationship with Sabine. He doesn’t particularly enjoy this, but it’s always bound to happen. Nevertheless, when alone, the two can enjoy each other’s company. As with the others in the house, Nick is kind to Imogen and apt to offer her treats.

At first, Nicholas wasn’t much of a fan of Dami. The First was jealous of the constant attention Damien and Sabine showered on each other after Damien was changed. However, the two became friends once Nick’s jealousy and Dami’s obsessiveness with Sabine waned. Damien was apt to flirt with him. He would decline the other’s advances as politely as possible and even started avoiding him for a bit. Due to his unsureness of his own sexual orientation and the memories of his wife which would come to mind, he really wasn’t sure what to make of the situation. Nick mentioned this to Damien one day, which in turn caused Damien to halt his advances on Nick out of respect. Nick isn’t really aware that this was the reason though. Since then, the two have become close friends. Nick enjoys being around Damien and loves him as a friend. While he does harbour some romantic feelings towards the Sixth, Nick really isn’t sure what to make of these feelings.

Aedan and Nicholas are friendly with each other, often joining Indigo in the kitchen to bake. The two also share a love of reading, leading them to discuss books or sit in comfortable, shared silence while reading. Nicholas can’t say he knows Aedan very well, given that he’s only been in the house for a year, but he’s comfortable around him. ”Sabine is my best friend. Though life was simpler before him, I’ve always enjoyed his company. I am happy to spend time with him whether it be in silence or in conversation. He’s a complex character, but I won’t abandon him despite his shortcomings.”
Sabine and his First are thick as thieves. Nick is grateful to the demon for saving his life. He will always have fond memories of Sabine, which he holds as evidence that his friend is not (completely) a monster. Together with Sabine’s forgetfulness, sincere remorse, and Nick’s own denial it seems that he and Sabine will be friends forevermore. Nicholas is almost always happy around Sabine and loves to be with him. Sabine is always one of the first to be offered a baked treat. While it would seem Nick is all rainbows and sunshine about the demon, he obviously isn’t a fan of Sabine’s violence.
