The Adherents: Remade

Most can agree that the most frightening monsters are those within your head. Now, they've been unleashed into the world. (remake of The Mirroreds)

Introduction

Magical use tended to be frowned upon in civilized culture.

After all, any rational person could easily tell you that such things were for children. Fairy tales, meant to silence them enough to fall asleep, to send them into a peaceful dreamland where dragons and knights and princesses locked away in towers were just as real as the sun or sky. A comfortable lie- one that immediately cast an adult as insane and eccentric if it was still held.

That was, of course, until the artifacts began to appear.

Nobody can fully recall when the first reports began to pour in. At first it was complaints to the doctor about migraines, nightmares, sudden sleep paralysis- and, in some cases, vivid hallucinations in the middle of the day. These reports began to spread widely across the country- scattered, yes, but still prominent enough to cause concern. Doctors began to scramble to research these odd conditions, fearing a new strain of airborne disease, only for their fears and theories to be completely blown out of the water by the next “step”.

It was a woman who was first detained, as well as a bizarre…thing that had appeared with her. The woman had no idea where it had came from- or even that it had suddenly appeared at all. Strangely enough, she had been stricken with amnesia after the incident, in which her husband reported that the creature had seemingly appeared out of thin air. More soon followed, eventually culminating in panic, and, after, a careful study. It was soon found that those that these creatures appeared around were oddly possessive of an object- whether it be a small, plastic dinosaur, a pocket knife, or even a sapphire ring- with many becoming agitated if one attempted to remove it from their person. Those who weren’t, however, claimed that they were unable to be rid of the thing at all, constantly finding it stashed away in their pockets, clutched within their grasp, and so on, and so forth.

Eventually, these creatures became prominent enough as to earn an official name- Mirroreds. Researchers had found that the appearance of the beings held a pattern, upon studying the histories of several and finding a wealth of psychiatric records attached to their names. The others with Mirroreds to their name were also brought into study, with many of them exhibiting similar personality traits. As such, they were dubbed a “mirror to the self”, especially when, after changes to the psyches of a few patients, the forms of the Mirroreds quickly shifted to reflect them.

The populace is well aware of the existence of these Mirroreds, as well as the fact that anyone could be blessed- or cursed, as some view it- with artifacts. Anyone could be drawn to a seemingly mundane item, develop the symptoms, and have a creature materialize soon enough. Luckily, it was soon found that these Mirroreds could be kept under control, vanished...although some chose to exploit the strengths, the powers, the abilities of their new companions.

In retaliation, the government began to cultivate groups to handle these raiders and mercenaries and whatnot. At first, they employed the use of typical weapons, but upon finding the Mirroreds to be extremely resilient to their weapons (while their summoners were still not, they soon found that the creatures under the command of the people were extremely protective of their summoners), they came up with a new idea; fighting fire with fire.

Today, many of these splinter groups can be found, with one of which being known as the Adherents of the Sinking Dawn- named such after the founder, whose Mirrored closely resembled a Phoenix. They are one of the most prominent groups to date, and while their methods can be a bit...shady at times (what with their recruitment of afflicted children and adults alike, and the occasional grooming here and there to encourage certain Mirrored types), they are some of the best of the best.

The Mirrored types are as follows;

Image

Image

Those who do not wish for any sort of conflict and can’t bring themselves to harm another living being are deemed Pacifists, summoners of the Hope Mirror. These creatures have the ability to stall time to the point of freezing within a radius around themselves. This radius depends on how strong the Pacifist’s desire for peace is, as well as the amount of training and control he or she has. The Mirroreds of Hope tend to have a gentle appearance and disposition.

Image

Image

Although they still reject the notion of harming others, the Kind have accepted conflict as a part of life that cannot be avoided. As a result of this contrast between them and the Pacifists, they are able to summon Mirrors of healing. The Mirroreds’ abilities allow them to patch up emotional or physical wounds with touch alone, making them excellent therapists or doctors. While many are kept around the base to tend to returning field agents, there are still others sent out on missions to serve as aid. These Mirroreds appear more graceful and sleek than others.

Image

Image

The summoners of these Mirroreds tend to be largely cynical and cold in their views of the world, and are undeniably on the “glass half empty” side of the spectrum. For whatever reason, whether it be time, experiences in their past, or both, they have lost their wide-eyed innocence; allowing them to see the world as it “really” is. As such, the Clarity Mirroreds have the ability to negate the powers of others within a short range. While this is not an indefinite effect, it can still tilt a battle in a group’s favor depending on how and when it’s used. These creatures tend to share the body shapes of the Peace, although they tend to appear either spectral or crystalline in appearance.

Image

Image

Many summoners recruited by the Adherents have went through a trauma in the past. It’s how they best get certain types of Mirrored under their command, after all. Death of a loved one, abuse, so on and so forth. The summoners of these Mirroreds are the same, having been wronged. Instead of choosing to forgive and forget, however, they hold a grudge close to their hearts. What happened to them wasn’t fair, after all; those who had harmed them deserve to pay. The powers of their Mirroreds resonate strongly in this ideal, allowing them to project the full extent of their pain onto a single person. This pain can be either emotional, physical, or both, but the results stay the same. These Mirroreds appear as ravenous predators, bearing claws, fangs, and a large frame.

Image

Image

While the Wrathful are based upon seeking revenge on those who have wronged them, the Hostile revolve around unbiased rage and conflict. They actively seek out violence, unprovoked anger being one of the core elements of their summons. The Spiteful Mirroreds are one of the rather few creatures who largely physical means of attack, with their claws serving far more than decorative purposes. The creatures created by the Hostiles resemble the Wrathful quite closely, but with more muscle mass.

Image

Image

Sufferers of depression have been known to feel tired, drained, as if their energy is being sapped out of their body. Consequently, the creatures summoned have the power to leech the life of another. This ability works at a range, and in a similar way to the Pacifists’, what with the ability to slow the target to the point of lethargy. However, unlike the Pacifists’, their power works on a sole target, and can steal the very life of the victim with time. These Mirroreds tend to appear as deformed beings, with a misshapen, gel-like mass.

Image

Image

One of the categories that the Adherents tend to groom specifically, these summoners are the sociopaths, the killers, the chessmasters. As such, the power of the Mirrored greatly reflects the facades and lies the summoners create, being capable of creating powerful illusions or charm targets. This ability works at a range, albeit one smaller than others. The Deception Mirrored appear as something Lovecraft would have thought up, being horrifying abominations- abominations that are exceptionally violent, especially when under an untrained summoner. The illusions they spin, however, can hide these deformities easily enough.

Image

Image

Another type of Mirrored that tends to be specifically groomed by the Adherents, if not specifically sought out. These summoners...to put it bluntly, enjoy pain. To an extreme extent, almost, going out of their way to harm both themselves and others. They thrive on the concept of pain, nearly addicted to the thrill it provides for them. The Mirrored created by these twisted people have similarities to several other categories, although they are still unique on their own. Much like the Hostiles, they are physical fighters, but what sets them apart is how they battle. The more hits inflicted upon the summoner or the creature, the stronger the creature grows, making them quite the opponent in a battle. The creatures tend to appear ragged, and generally unsettling.

Image

  • With the right circumstances, the Mirrored can change from one alignment to the other. This is especially prominent in the Pacifists turning into either the Kind, or the Lost. The Corrupt are one of the most stable Mirrored, however.
  • The Adherents tend to use animal motifs as titles for their summoners, based around their Mirror type, the behavior and skills of the Mirror, and the behavior of the summoner herself or himself. These titles are earned by becoming an accomplished Adherent through time and the summoner's rate of success, and are often used as a sort of alias during missions.
  • It is impossible to have more than one Mirrored under your control. While it can fluctuate between two Mirror types, there is no known way of summoning multiple creatures without death.
  • The relationship between the life of a summoner and Mirrored is fairly simple. If the summoner dies, then the Mirrored soon follows. However, the Mirrored cannot be killed, only injured to a point of near death. If this occurred, then its summoner will fall into a coma.
  • The artifacts themselves can be damaged if their owners are not careful, although this is rather difficult. Given that the objects are not natural, it takes unnatural means in order to properly destroy them. When destroyed, the summoners often experience a sort of hollowness, given that a piece of them suddenly went missing.
  • The creatures are not completely sentient. Rather than experience a complete separation of thoughts and wills, their summoner's emotions and desires instead drive them. They are comparable to animals in that, while they are autonomous, they cannot have overly-complex thoughts or ideas on their own.
  • As this mistake has been made a bit often, I would like to clarify that the Mirrored do not look exactly like animals. Instead, they appear as creatures that resemble animals, although this ranges from them being majestic and graceful in appearance, to more or less being eldritch abominations.

Toggle Rules

  • All basics apply here. No PPing, be coherent in your posting, and no wildly overpowered characters that can summon fifty billion dragons to slay their enemies.
  • I’d prefer it if you had a character picture, but if you can’t find any, then just go ahead and wait until you find one until your liking and post the character anyway. :)
  • Please stick to the official rules and stuff of the canon. No bringing in new Mirrored types without my permission, no breaking the rules deliberately, etc. If you want to suggest something new for the canon, though, just ask; I don’t bite!
  • Be polite. Our characters can be at each other’s throats, but I expect for us all to at least be cordial to one another.

Perhaps letting their Mirroreds loose at a time like this wasn’t exactly the best idea.

Especially around someone who had just found out the “joys” of having an artifact for the first time.

The poor man was pressed up against the walls of the training field, palms flat against the stone behind him, chest rising and falling rapidly, and eyes wide as he stared out at his accidental summon. It was kind of humorous to watch, really, especially considering that it ended up being a Pacifist; the creature looked like nothing more than a particularly large dog-monkey thing. It blinked, looking about the arena, before setting sights on its summoner and lowering its muzzle to peer at the man.

The youth let out a squeal- a squeal of all things!- and cowered further as the being put its muzzle against his body, and gave a delicate sniff.

The Mirrored then proceeded to lick him.

From where they were watching in the stands, laying comfortably on their stomachs, a certain pair of twins smiled innocently. They had been sent out to try and get the man to trigger his summon again, and, while successful, it appeared to have traumatized the poor rookie for the time being in regards to Mirroreds. It wasn’t their fault, really- after all, there was no way they could know that sending out their own creatures and cheerfully informing the man that it was “breakfast time” could end up frightening him so badly.

Really, no idea whatsoever.

“Do you think we should go down and calm him down, yet?” Pushing herself into a sitting position, Olive placed her hands beneath her chin and squinted at the small figure cowering on the field, attempting to push his Mirrored away and failing horribly. “I don’t think they would like it that much if we ended up scaring him too badly.”

Gale only smiled at first- his trademark sign of faux innocence- and copied his twin’s movement, watching for a few moments longer before speaking up. “I think we should let him squirm for a bit longer. He looks about ready to faint! And, besides,” the blond turned his head a little, “we already finished our objective. No harm in messing with him a little before we leave.”

“We’ll end up having to stick around longer if he ends up fainting, though, and I’m hungry. We’ll end up missing breakfast if we don’t leave soon.”

“Oh, hush. We can go buy something from the vending machine if we have to.”

“We did that yesterday! I’m sick of having zebra cake.”

“Then just buy something else. Get a bag of chips or something.”

The pair then fell into a round of quiet squabbling, arguing on whether or not the chips were indeed sold stale, and whether having a diet solely consisting of chocolate bars and tic-tacs could be possible. Eventually, after a round of paper-scissors-rock, Gale relented to wrapping things up, and made his way to the elevator (Olive had called dibs on not having to take care of the problem, and the rule of dibs could never be broken).

Upon stepping out onto the field, the beast stiffened, its massive head swivelling rapidly on its shoulders in order to face Gale. The blonde only gave it a smile in return to its look of suspicion, and, walking around the Mirrored, made his way to the rookie.

“This is what happens when you don’t take training seriously,” he scolded, and, without waiting for a response, snapped his fingers and released “Matty” into the open.

In hindsight, he really should have picked a better name, but Olive had been insistent that he named the thing and he hadn’t had many ideas at the time.

Instead of the abomination that he had earlier sent out after the rookie, there was only a small, fluffy thing at his feet. It purred loudly, trotting in circles around Gale’s ankles, and the boy absentmindedly reached down to scratch it under the chin. In spite of its relatively harmless appearance at the moment, however, the other Mirrored began to growl at it; clearly aware of what it truly was.

Paying the sound no attention, Gale quickly directed Matty to the other male, allowing it to channel its power into him. When it finally hit the man properly, the tension in his shoulders relaxed, and, slumping, gave a dopey grin at no one in particular.

Pathetic.

Shortly after the effects had taken place, the Pacifist’s Mirrored vanished, leaving only imprints in its place. Wiping his hands on his coat, as if cleaning an invisible dust from them, Gale retrieved Matty and headed back to the elevator. Once he had reached the stands again, he slipped a lollipop from his pocket, and, discarding the wrapping, popped the candy into his mouth.

“There. Are you happy now?” He drawled, earning a triumphant smile from his sister.

“Very. Now, let’s go; I think they’re serving some of that cinnamon toast today.”

After filling out the proper forms in regards to their abandoned trainee, they made their way into the winding halls, towards the cafeteria. Their knowledge of the place was obvious in how quickly they navigated the building, taking a shortcut here and there, occasionally stalling to greet some of their coworkers here and there.

Upon reaching the canteen, they both picked up their meals- toast, just as Olive had guessed, and a few strips of bacon- and sat themselves at a table.

With any luck, those who had been sent out on the recent mission would be back soon.

It was too quiet, too little people about.

The table was usually a warm place to recoup and settle down, but today it was a cold place. There sat a troubled adolescence who looked deeply into the distance, only to see many people within her view. She sat there in quite and ate her breakfast which composed of a glass of ice water and some bibimbap. The egg was over cooked and rice too chewy. Not always the preferred combination, but today it would have to do. The girl picked up her fork and began to dive into the dish.

She looked on at her notebook in which she wrote in her tasks and missions for the day. "Theta, once again you have nothing exciting scheduled for today" she exclaimed to herself. She looked up at the twins who were right within her view. She sighed as she heard their promise. "I wish them the best. It is difficult it is to climb up to the top." She muttered. She didn't know what she was saying to herself. In fact she never even remotely attempted to climb the ranks like the twins were going to. She got to where she was by pure accident.

An idea spiked into Theta's mind. What would happen if she actually attempted to climb the ranks instead of skipping out on tasks and developing her skills? She could try to enhance her type and be better than she was before. Surely it couldn't be too bad. She could try to join in on more sessions. Theta wasn't too far away from others in age, and after all at one point she was considered a "prodigy" too.

"I wonder..." She asked as she looked around at everyone in the cafeteria. "Maybe I'll be sent on a mission soon."

Re: The Adherents: Remade

Aight, I'll try to get the intro up sometime this weekend. I've been busy recently with irl and online stuff lately, so I just need a bit of time before I can get down to business, haha. Sorry for the delays!

The Adherents: Remade

Hello, Echo again. I decided to remake my old roleplay, the Mirroreds, as it didn't get much attention the first time around. I guess it didn't really look all that interesting, and many people didn't join- or if they did, they just disappeared into oblivion. I wanted to see if it would get more attention this time around, with pretty pictures and general niceness, so yeah. Feel free to ask me any questions, as I'm probably going to be around as much as possible. :)
