Introduction

Fugitive terrorist Tahira Ali voluntarily enters the United States, offering information on individuals closely tied to the heart of Hataf, a terrorist organization responsible for scores of attacks against anyone deemed its enemy (including Americans, Israelis, the British, and even Asian Indians) since 1965 through the present day. Since 1968, Ali has been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List for her role in Hataf related attacks and foiled plots, as well as seemingly unrelated murders.

Meanwhile, the American Central Intelligence Agency will scramble to unravel this mystery. Why is Ali offering this information? Is any of it valid? And most importantly, they have received intelligence from other sources that Hataf is planning its grandest attack yet, with a nuclear warhead obtained from the former Soviet Union. It is unclear where it came from, but if the information is true, and the CIA believes it is, it is even more imperative to deal a crushing blow to Hataf to end its reign of terror over its enemies.

At the same time, the American FBI will demand jurisdiction in the criminal case pending against Ali, who has not been granted any form of immunity. They see this as an opportunity to make an example of her, to propagate the message that they always get their man, and that no one can escape justice, especially not one of their ten most wanted.

As the date of Hataf's attack draws near - sometime mid-June - tensions will increase, and those involved in this situation will be forced to examine their own motives, to face their pasts, and to unravel the greatest mystery of all - the mystery of self. Those in Hataf who fear they will be named, found, and either arrested or killed will be driven deeper into hiding, or drawn from it, to do what Ali is doing. Those in the CIA and the FBI are not merely engaged in another turf war; they must find a median in order to prevent a devastating tragedy. And then there is Tahira Ali. What to do with her? That question, though not the first one, is ever-present, as law enforcement and intelligence work together to thwart Hataf's plot.

Toggle Rules

Rules

1.) Follow basic roleplay etiquette. This is with respect to things such as god-modding, metagaming, and the like.
2.) Post as often as you can. Your real life comes first, so don't feel overly pressured. (Minimum is once every two weeks; but less is acceptable, if you speak to me about it.)
3.) Characters should be unique, realistic, believable, and dynamic. This means Mary Sues will not be permitted, and that all characters should be developed dynamically and believably.
4.) Literacy is required. There is no minimum post length, but good form, style, and presentation are expected.
5.) Violence and swearing (IC only, please) are obviously permitted due to the nature of the themes. Keep romance/sexual content to PG-13 (this one is a rule of the site as well).

Character Submissions

You can submit them to the official roleplay tab page. . . thing. . . on here.

Be sure to mention what organization your character represents. You may choose from the CIA, the FBI, Hataf, or the American military. You could also choose another organization, provided you have good reason to add to the story from that angle.

I honestly don't care whether you use a picture reference for your character (as long as it's realistic), but please use your description and history as a chance to showcase your writing ability. Premade or pre-existing characters are welcome, provided they are your creation. Also, be realistic about ages of characters, especially with respect to relevant skills, experience, and education.

Any Mary Sues will be murdered most violently before I click the 'accept' button.

Also, when you submit a character, please send me a PM so I know you sent a profile. The tab doesn't notify GMs of submissions.

Lastly, when you post your IC posts, please remember to make them in the FORUM THREAD, not this tab.

In the wake of the fiasco over the news story of the century - and the fact that the Director of the FBI was livid beyond belief - Natalie Schultz had driven out to the prison first thing in the morning, in order to discover who exactly had let a reporter in to see Ali. The name was easily located - Deputy Assistant Director of Counterintelligence Kyle Reeves - as Natalie glanced at the visitors' log, immediately placing the time and date. Accompanying the familiar name was "Special Agent Allison Moore".

A byproduct of eidectic memory and boredom, Natalie recalled that the only Allison Moore in the Bureau had been on maternal leave for two weeks now. She turned to Warden Husted, the older man standing beside her with his arms folded, and demanded, "Take me to see Tahira. Now, Andrew. It is a necessity for me to ensure the security of ev - "

"Ali is no longer here," Husted interrupted with a wave of the hand, as Natalie stared at the man's long mustache, the pen whirling in her hand. "She was transferred, orders from the top."

"I need to see th - " Natalie began, and Husted interrupted again.

"Here they are," he said, offering the copy of the orders Rapp had left behind. Natalie glanced at them, flipped through the pages, committing them to memory with a single look.

"Well, then," she said, twisting to look at the wall. "Thank you for your time." Natalie nodded briefly to the Warden before returning to her car. Sitting in the driver's seat, she pondered the documents. They did not specify a receiving location. The military, while decidedly anal about need to know, would not be so ambiguous in its orders, she decided. Thus, the likely culprit was the Bureau's longtime rival, the Directorate of Central Intelligence.

Phoning a well-used number, Natalie put in a call over her secure wireless, hoping to contact someone in the Agency's counterterrorism division. Over the years, she'd participated in several Agency operations, even spending two years in Afghanistan a few years back, where her linguistic skills proved invaluable. And unlike some at the Bureau, Natalie harbored little animosity for her Agency counterparts. That trend, however, seemed to be coming to an end.

Somewhere deeply in Langley a bored looknig desk agent glanced at the call coming in his line. For a few moments he was tempted to ignore it and let another agent deal with it but with a long suffering sigh he finally picked up the phone. "Central Intelligence. How may we svae the FBI today?"

"According to Andrew," Natalie said, referring to the Warden, "she was ordered transferred shortly after midnight by the military, with the orders bearing Kyle's signature," referring to the man the CIA had ordered arrested for treason, "which is simply nonsensical as Kyle is the same man who let the reporter into the prison! Someone at the Agency must know where she is!"

There were hundreds of thousands of protestations waiting to be shouted at the Director, but none of them materialized. Natalie slumped in her seat, the pressure on the barrel of the pen steadily increasing as she waited for the inevitable SUV to arrive, cursing the CIA in all the languages of Afghanistan. It wasn't her fault the bastard had taken a reporter to see Ali! Natalie Schultz was not to blame for this.

She ejected a CD from her car's audio player, even though it hadn't actually been playing, and closed it in its case, which she deftly returned to the glove compartment. After a moment, Natalie removed her Glock from its holster, rotating it over and over on its side, as if she could burn it into her memory.

The SUV when it arrived was like nothing she had ever seen. It was the big black armoured variety they had recently begun buying from the Canadians, the Knight armoured car. Two men rode in it, looking more cowboys then agents. They wore denim jeans, rugged t-shirts and sported big beards that made them look like Vikings.

β€œAgent Schultz.” Said the bigger of the two, gesturing to the SUV. β€œIf you would please join my friend in the back seat.” The second man had opened the rear door. Both looked calm and not even slightly worried about the Glock in her hand. It was obvious they were hard men.

Dressed in khaki pants and a turquoise-colored Pakistani kameez shirt, Natalie Schultz looked more like an errant teacher or the mom down the street than an FBI agent, though she was known for this affect among her colleagues. When the man spoke, she looked up, almost confused for a moment, before she hurriedly slid her Glock back into his holster, the pen still in her other hand, climbing out of her own car and locking it.

Natalie did not seem to be intimidated by the sudden appearance; instead, she seemed almost relieved. She opened her mouth to ask a question, and then she remembered her instructions. She closed her mouth, climbing into the back seat of the SUV next to the smaller man, sitting as far away as possible, almost to the point of leaning against the side of the vehicle.

β€œYour weapon.” Said the redbeared man as he held out a hand. He waited until she gave it too him before sliding it into a locked box. Natalie stared blankly at the bag for a moment. Finally, she took it, sliding it over her head with great precision, almost as if she were agonizing over the exact manner in which to do it. The entire time, the pen remained in her hand, the pressure against it increasing so much her knuckles turned nearly white gripping it.

The rumble of the truck engine was the only thing that penetrated the hood as the vehicle followed a route completely different from that of Ali's convoy though the ultimate destination was the same. Once again the black Lynx helicopter sat quietly on the tarmac and Rapp helped Natalie climb into the back seat while Azzan once again played pilot.

The aircraft rose, banked and began its climb over the city, nose aimed towards the distant mountains. In the front Azzan carefully scanned for any sign of pursuit while Rapp kept his eyes fixed on the FBI agent, a pistol held loosely in his lap.

A thousand questions waited to be asked, but Natalie squelched all of them, working hard to drown out the incessant rumbling of the engines. She was on an aircraft of some sort, and were she in the right frame of mind, Natalie might have been able to place the exact model based on the sound of its engines. For now, her mental processes were hampered by the sensation of the bag against her face. She clamped her fingers around the pen in her hand with an iron fist, the fingers of her other hand rubbing the hem of her kameez shirt at a constant pace. This was the only way she knew how to quiet the anxiety bubbling up in the back of her mind without asking any of the thousand questions.

The whine of the engines increased as they rose higher into the mountains, the blades thumping at the thinner air as they laboured to clear the pines that rushed below. Had Natalie been able to see she may have wished she couldn't as Azzan, a helicopter expert, whipped the aircraft through the mountains only a few dozen feet above the craggy ridges.

At length the aircraft slowed and a powerful down draft buffeted the helicopter as Azzan slowly lowered them onto the narrow ledge and its do-or-die landing pad. The ground crew appeared as before and tied down the aircraft, stepping back long enough to allow Rapp to help Natalie climb from the cabin. She seemed unsteady at first under the chill mountain wind and Rapp inhaled deeply of the clean smell once again. He loved coming here.

Once inside the facility he waited until the door closed. "Agent Schultz, you may remove your hood. Welcome to the Eagles Nest.” The name had been given to the place after an Eagles nest had been discovered above the entry to the hanger some years before. The birds still came every year despite the helicopters and the facility crew had taken a liking to the birds and were extremely protective.

Natalie reached up, and with the same methodical precision, slid the hood from her head, blinking to adjust to the lighting. She looked over at Rapp, the pen beginning to spin in her hand again, her posture oddly rigid, her gaze resting beside the man's face rather than meeting his eyes. The look on her face would have been more appropriate for a patient being operated on without anesthesia, but it took several moments before she actually spoke.

When she did, her voice came out almost hollow sounding, lacking inflection, as the fingers of her left hand slid into her pocket. "I'm not sure what I'm supposed to say to that," Natalie said, taking a moment to look around, memorizing the place with each glance, as part of her mind computed the exact geometric specifications of the hangar.

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to back out of the RP at this point. Most of my RPing time and interest has swayed towards more fantasy-based worlds and I just can't motivate myself to write for Dawn or many of my other modern-era characters anymore. I wish you all the best of luck with the roleplay because it certainly deserves it. :)

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

I am alive and I'm a failure at posting in a timely fashion. Also, Aliath is rejoining us by Friday as well. Along with Alasund in the near future. We are two years old (with this roleplay) on 24 March 2012; can you all believe it? Since it's started, I've actually moved to D.C. And I've been to some of the locations mentioned in posts. (How fun, I know.)

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

Ylanne! You are alive! Thank goodness. Well, I'll work on a new post coming up in the next few day.

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

Okay! Just a quick note for those of you who're working on posts. Don't forget to read the bottom of page six and Tempest's new post on page seven. Thanks!

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

This is mostly my fault. I will post tomorrow. I'm sorry. I will be moving the plot forward. I have plans. Does anyone have suggestions before I write said post? (I'm already one-third of the way through.)

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

In an ideal world what would have happened at this point in the plot was that Dawn would have dropped out of it for a while, whilst everyone else got along and other things happened, until such a time as she made a mistake that would lead to her revealing herself. I'm really not sure what to do now, since the rest of the plot has ground to a halt, and it seems unrealistic that Dawn would have a CIA agent on her tail within a week. :/

Welcome back. And I'm waiting on your post and perhaps a reply from Script on whether or not she wants me to hunt her... Until then, limbo...

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

I hope to get a post up this weekend. I also need to post in Orsa of Terminus, and to prepare for some things work-related offline. I hope I'll have time over the weekend to get caught up. I'm thinking the post will delve into one or both of their backstories a bit more, as I like to do that. Tahira, we've explored a bit in the introductions to the three days. I think I'll focus on Natalie in this one.

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

Tempest, you and Skallagrim may want to think about collaborating as well, as Skall is writing for the CIA's Special Activities Division, if I'm not mistaken. A PM could be a good idea, if you need to contact him and he doesn't respond immediately to this thread. (Then again, Skall, you might be reading this yourself, in which case a response would be lovely.)

Dawn -- I can't think of anything specific, except either things she is doing with her new job, or things she is doing to avoid being found or tracked. As Tempest suggested, you might have room for some collaboration there.

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

Script wrote:Is there anything in particular I need to be posting? Because though there have been a couple of posts that directly refer to Dawn, at the moment I'm thinking I'll need to come up with a little mini-plotline within London for her until the other characters catch up with her. If there's nothing I need to directly address, I'll set to thinking of something.

I'm happy to send a CIA agent after you if you like?

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

Thanks, Tempest. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your most recent post, and will try to put up a post for Natalie and Tahira in Eagle's Nest soon.

We're waiting on posts from Ivanol, Script, Baby, Ottoman, and LightingStrikes at the moment. Alasund De'astio and Tempest both recently posted.

This roleplay was originally created in a tab located at When the Lion Wakes in the tab, and Remaeus and I spent the other day creating the correct places where scenes and posts have taken place. Sometime within the next week or two, the posts from the in-character thread will be migrated to the roleplay in the new system, where they will remain readable entirely in chronological order, as well as in-character location-stamped. Future posts (AFTER the existing ones have been migrated) will need to be made to the correct location in the roleplay (and if there is not a location listed here that you need, I can create it for you.)

When this roleplay was first created in March 2010 (yes, 2010), I was not happy with the tab system as it existed. With a slew of recent changes made to suit writing and my style of reading, I would like to see these posts migrated back into the tab. If you don't believe me about its readability, check this Multiverse place and the way posts are listed there. You can click on different pages, and posts made using the posting box at the bottom would appear in that location. The same system, on a smaller scale (as there are fewer *places, roleplayers, and posts in When the Lion Wakes), will work for us, and for both our shorter and longer posts.

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

Sounds good, Alasund. Write your post when you can.

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

Hello all!

Amelia has finally arrived!

Hopefully I'll have the time to work her in soon enough. ^_^

Re: When the Lion Wakes (limited openings)

I would definitely have you back. If I removed you from the character roster, let me know and I'll fix it. Please post whenever. I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better too. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you.
