His hand roamed higher and Isla gasped slightly as the back of his hand gently caressed the side of her breast.

She felt like she had stopped breathing. He was looking at her and she found herself unable to look away.

“Not until now,”,

His hands were in her hair and Isla closed her eyes. He was so gentle but intense. She knew she should be afraid or worried about what he might do but she could not find it in her.

Nicholas pulled her up to stand and pulled her against him. Isla looked up, about to protest when his mouth was suddenly on hers.

Her hands went to his shoulders. She was startled but suddenly found herself reacting. She started to kiss him back.

No! No you cannot do this!

Her hands pushed him lightly away. Isla broke their kiss. She was breathless and the first inhale came sharply.

“You cannot do that....I-I cannot....”

She flushed. She could feel it over her entire body.

“The wine has left us not aware. This is not...I should return to Alysander.”

Isla felt shaken and raw. There was too much she did not understand happening, too many feelings she did not have a handle on. She wanted to go but she also wanted to stay. She wanted the heady feeling that had taken over when he pulled her in.

Her eyes lifted to find Nicholas’ face, there were tears in them. “You should not do such a thing and I should not have let you.”

Isla’s hands found his chest, pushing him away. Nicholas took a step back, looking at her in hopes that he could read the truth on her face. She had kissed him back, he thought. But she had pushed him away as well.

“You cannot do that....I-I cannot....” she told him breathlessly, her face and neck reddening. Her lips had darkened and were shaking ever so slightly, as was the rest of her. “The wine has left us not aware. This is not...I should return to Alysander. You should not do such a thing and I should not have let you.”

The man reached down and took her hand. “It was not the wine,” he disagreed. “I knew what I was doing. I think you did too. Isla, I want you. I’ve never felt drawn to a woman like this before. I think you feel it to.” He stroked the knuckles of her slim hand with his thumb, looking down at her with no trace of the smile he had worn before. He knew what he wanted, and he knew how small his odds were, but he had only gotten where he was in life by striving for things. What he had told Isla was true- there had not been a woman diverting enough to draw his attention away from his role and his duty, but he felt a magnetic pull to the dark eyed beauty that his men had captured.

Isla was shaking when Nicholas took her hand. He told her he wanted her and it came with a force she had never experienced before. He was right though, she had never felt anything like this before.

She looked up at him. “You said it had been a long time since you had a woman’s company. That is all it is. You do not even know me. I am with Alysander. I cannot...”

Isla looked down at her feet. Another time, another life even perhaps she could have found herself giving into the attraction she felt for him.

“I am with Alysander. I have to go with him. You have a war to fight, a title to defend.”

Isla was so confused. Her eyes lifted once more to meet Nicholas’. “I do not understand what I feel. I should not have done this.”

Isla tried to draw her hand away from him. Her confusion was clear in her body language.

“No, Isla, I know what this is, and it’s not loneliness.” He released her hand, realizing that this was not a choice he could make. It was a choice she had to make, and her alone. She would go back to her brutish husband, thought Nicholas, and live a humdrum, village life.

I would have found a way. If you had said you wanted me to, I would have found a way.

“The fault was mine, you do not need to feel guilty. You may return to your husband, if you wish. But if you ever change your mind, please come find me.”

Isla looked up at him. She frowned. Another life...another time...maybe if I find my coat....but I want to be near Alysander and Rhiannon... That thought hit her hard. Isla looked at the door of the tent and then back to Nicholas.

Being human is hard. I do not like this....

Her eyes softened. "Thank you but do not take the blame. We....I am just as much to blame."

I have no reason to feel bad. I am not married...not really but I do, I feel....

Her voice dropped. "I will keep your offer in mind my Lord Lochcarron and I hope that you are able to retain that which is yours."

Isla gave him one last look and slowly walked to the tent flap. She stopped dead. "I cannot go out there alone."

Looking back over her shoulder. "I know that men are capable of many things and I do not wish to walk out there and find my way back alone. Is there....is there someone who..."

She should be stronger, more sure but she was still feeling open and vulnerable from her interaction with Nicholas.

“I will accompany you,” Nicholas told Isla, his tone firm. He joined her at the mouth of the tent and offered her his arm once more. As they walked through the camp, he spoke quietly to her. “Your husband is a lucky man. You are beautiful and faithful, and that’s rare. Don’t let him take you for granted.”

They reached the fire that Alysander was sharing with the three Englishmen. The four were no longer being watched, and all had their bedrolls spread out on the ground beside the fire, which had been banked for the night. They had eaten and been given watered beer, but even with lifted spirits Alysander had not struck up conversation with the foreigners. When Nicholas and Isla approached, the three Englishmen were playing dice, while Alysander seemed to be meditating in silence, eyes drifting from the fire to his surroundings.

“Is he really your prize?” asked Nicholas in a whisper, then chuckled. “It hurts a man’s pride to be passed over for a man like that.” He patted Isla’s arm with his free hand, slipped his arm out from under hers. “I bid you goodnight. Please remember my offer.” His voice was soft so that only she would hear.

Isla was both relieved and nervous that Nicholas offered to escort her back the the fire. She took his arm and placed her other hand on his forearm.

His compliment sat oddly with her. She flattered that he thought her beautiful but that he would call Alysander lucky to be with her or to not let him take her for granted just made her stomach tighten.

I need my coat. I need Alysander because I need my coat. I am walking away from him because I need my coat.

Isla was trembling slightly as they walked. She spotted Alysander at the fire.

“Is he really your prize? It hurts a man’s pride to be passed over for a man like that.”

Isla looked sharply at Nicholas. Her eyes found his. She had no response. He is not mine I am no one’s I belong to the sea. I...

She closed her eyes briefly as he told her to remember his offer. Her voice was but a whisper “I will remember. I could not forget someone who seemed to think so highly of me, who I...”

Isla stopped herself. “Thank you for the meal Lord Lochcarron and I wish you much success. I hope his hot headedness cools and you can make him see sense before there is too much blood shed.”

Her tone was sincere. Isla brushed her hand briefly on his before she turned and walked to where Alysander sat.

“Did they feed you?”

Her eyes were full of concern as she sat with him.

Alysander had been deep in thought and started when Isla spoke to him. “What?” he asked, confused. “Oh, aye. Still, I’ll be glad t’ leave here in the mornin’.” They’d lost an entire day due the Lord of Lochcarron- time that could not be made up. Another day Rhiannon sat alone.

“Did ye have a good supper?” he asked. Behind Isla, the laird was retreating, then disappeared into the inky darkness of the night. “What did he want with ye?”

Isla looked up towards the darkness. "Supper was fine."

She could barely make out Nicholas' form as he disappeared. Her eyes turned to look at Alysander. The firelight made his eyes shine, bright blue against the dark.

"He wanted conversation over dinner."

Isla pulled her eyes away and tucked her legs up to place her knees under her chin. "We talked of about the fighting. He told me I was beautiful."

She felt chilled all of sudden. Her eyes were fixed on the fire.

Isla lowered her voice so only Alysander could hear. "I am sorry for kissing you but I thought it best to keep up the appearance."

"Supper was fine."

Isla’s eyes were on the man that had quietly drifted away, a strange look on her face. She seemed sad, he thought. Why? Isla pulled her knees up, resting her chin atop them. The tops of her feet just barely poked out from under the hem of her dress. "He wanted conversation over dinner. We talked about the fighting. He told me I was beautiful."

Alysander felt a strange tightening in his gut, almost as if someone had struck him in the stomach and knocked the air out of him. He only grunted in reply, then stared out at the fire. I knew he had an interest in Isla, thought Alysander. Probably thought just because he’s laird here he can have whatever woman he wants.

It didn’t matter. The marriage was nothing but a front to protect Isla till they found Gareth. If she wanted to be involved with Laird Lochcarron, she was free to. Maybe she’d change her mind about finding her seal coat and stay with the man who’d told her she was beautiful. Leaving her here would mean I’d find Gareth faster, he thought, but he felt bitter.

"I am sorry for kissing you but I thought it best to keep up the appearance." Isla’s voice was much softer now, meant only for his ears. He met her eye and shook his head.

“Ye do’na have t’ apologize, Isla. I knew it was just fer appearances.”

“Ye do’na have t’ apologize, Isla. I knew it was just fer appearances.”

Her head whipped to look at him. It stung more than she had expected for him to say it was for appearances. Had she not just said the same thing?

Something took hold of her, some desire to know, some desire to see...

Isla moved, shifting to be closer to him. Her eyes were on his face as she leaned in, her hands on his cheeks and kissed him again. This time though there was more behind it, not quite as soft as before but not with the same force that Nicholas had kissed her.

She broke the kiss and stared at him as if searching for answers.

"We should sleep." She finally managed to breath out the words.

He’d been watching the flames dance and lick at the burning logs, but he looked up at Isla when he felt her move closer, her hip brushing against him. She was looking at him with a strange sort of intensity, then she leaned toward him. Her hands found his face, fingers brushing against the scratchy beard that beginning to grow in again already. She leaned in, her eyes closing, and her lips met his. It was firmer than before, with more intent behind it, but it was too brief and too unexpected for him to react.

She drew back, eyes searching. His own eyes searched her face, uncomprehending.

"We should sleep."

Her words had nothing to do with what had just happened and only further befuddled the man. “Why did ye do that?” he asked quietly, the words barely a breath.

Isla was breathing slowly but heavily. "I-I...."

Her whole body felt as if she had been put into the fire. Her large dark eyes were still on his. There was panic there. One hand moved from his face to her lips. "I had to."

Isla wanted to hide, wanted to slink away. She was more confused now. She had hoped that it would answer something, anything but it did not make things any clearer.

Her eyes darted to the three men playing dice and then back to Alysander. She could not tell if he was angry with her or not. Isla withdrew her other hand from his cheek.

It felt as if he’d taken a second blow, and Alysander had a feeling of being trapped.

“Isla,” he said very quietly. “Let’s no’ make things more complicated than they need t’ be.”

Why had she gone and done that? Weren’t things hard enough already? That morning had been hard enough with the confusion between them, and that situation was nothing compared to what had just happened. Just when they’d worked through the awkwardness and uncomfortableness between them, she’d gone and created more anew. What was more, they didn’t have a whole room to themselves that night, in which they could put distance between each other. Now they had only a single bedroll, and an entire camp that expected them to behave as husband and wife.

She wanted to move away from him and almost did until she remember that they were supposed to be husband and wife. Isla felt sick to her stomach. A nod was all she could manage. She sat down next to him.

Isla sunk into herself. Her body hunkered down over her knees and her chin rested there. She stared in the fire.

At least I know how he feels and maybe once I get my coat back I can return here. Maybe I could be a human...for a little while. I could still visit Rhiannon.

Her hair fell about her face and hid her features. No better to find my coat and return to the sea. This is too difficult. Even with what I feel....

Her head bowed a little and silent tears began to fall. How could she have done that, kissed him like that? What did she honestly think she was going to figure out?

She grew tired and the tears slowed. Isla had trouble keeping her attention on the fire.

From the corner of his eye, Alysander could see tears falling down Isla’s white cheeks. He sat in stony silence, feeling perturbed. He didn’t know what to say to console her; probably there was nothing he could have said to make her feel better in that moment.

Across the fire, the three other men had ended their game of dice and were now looking at Isla with frowns on their faces, except for Isaac, who was looking right at Alysander with an unblinking look that was impossible to interpret. Alysander glared at the three men and Bill and Ralph looked away quickly, lying down in their bedrolls. Isaac was utterly unaffected by Alysander’s menacing look, but his gaze shifted to Isla and he he blinked.

“Let’s lay down,” muttered Alysander, standing up and moving to the blanket he had spread out. He pulled back the top of it and waited for Isla. Would she refuse to lie with him, despite the appearance they were trying to give off. Maybe she’ll go back to Laird Lochcarron.

Isla was wavering where she sat.

“Let’s lay down,”

She stood and moved to where he waited. He had a blanket in hand. Isla felt numb. She knelt and laid down on the blanket. She waited for Alysander to lay down and cover them. Would he hold her close to him like he had in sleep the previous night? Would he keep space between them?

Don’t let him take you for granted

That is what Nicholas had told her. There is nothing to take advantage of. He feels nothing. I thought maybe...I thought I did....I felt something and yet....confused is all I am. Her thoughts were a jumbled mess, mixing with her emotions and leaving her exhausted yet making it difficult to sleep.

She waited for Alysander to get comfortable. Her actions had made it strained again and she worried that he might break their little facade. Maybe he will not help me now.

“Good night Alysander.”

She murmured it to him as she lay with her back to him. Her one arm was tucked under her head to acted as a pillow. Her eyes stared out into the darkness.

“Goodnight,” he replied, wishing his voice didn’t sound so tight. He laid down next to her so that they were back to back. There wasn’t barely enough room in the bedroll for two people, even when one was as slim as Isla, and their backs touched all along their spines. He could feel her hair tickling the back of his neck, and when he shifted his heel brushed her leg. It was going to be a long night.

He closed his eyes but couldn’t fall asleep. His eyes opened again and he stared ahead tiredly, feeling agitated, uncomfortable, and guilty. The feelings were a terrible combination that left his stomach in knots. He didn’t remember falling asleep, but eventually sleep came.

He laid down, his back to her. Isla closed her eyes and tears fell. His foot brushed her leg and Isla tried to curl herself, to move over to give the bigger man more room.

She wanted desperately to get up, to walk around or to a least give Alysander the space he seemed to desire.

He wants space because these human emotions made you do something you should not have because you hoped what....he felt something?

Her stomach clenched. She slowly realized that she wanted Alysander to look at her the way Nicholas had. She wanted him to pull her in and kiss her. Yet she could not get past the way she had felt with Nicholas.

Her pulse raced as she thought on the way he had touched her cheek, the way his fingers played up her arm, the way he had pulled her in and his lips found hers.

Hot tears hit her arm. She needed to travel with Alysander, there was no way around that. She needed her coat back because despite the pull to the human men she missed the sea. Could the attraction be enough to make her forget about her watery home?

Anger hit her and Isla rolled over. She found herself facing Alysander’s back. She huffed to herself and laid there staring at him.

Sleep came eventually. She pressed close to him unconsciously for warmth in the night.

The sound of voices woke him. A few early risers were talking as they moved around the camp. The smell of beefy broth permeated the air and Alysander’s stomach growled in response. He sat up and yawned, then looked down at the sleeping woman beside him, a fresh wave of guilt rolling over him. He gingerly crawled out of the blankets, trying not to disturb her, and went to check their belongings. Everything seemed in order and no one had tried to steal from them while they slept. He could see Wallace’s horse grazing in the far end of the clearing with the other horses.

One of the men that was stirring a blackened kettle offered him a cup of broth and he took it gratefully. It was warming on the chilly morning, and he went to sit on the log by the cold fire as he blew on it.
