Introduction

The year is 2023, and years of war has ravaged just about all of the country of Japan, so much so that all modern technology has been rendered useless. During the war, one side managed to use and explode a hydrogen bomb in atmosphere over the country, rendering all electronic devices, with the exception of the car and small battery-powered devices, useless, this side becoming the new rulers of the country. Japan has, once again, reverted to a feudal way of life similar to the Sengoku Era of Japanese history. The use of bladed weapons being all that were available because of the new leader's ban on all firearms. They have been confiscated and burned.

With the coming of this new era, the return of the ideas and teachings of the samurai became increasingly more common, a common ruler of areas of the world with their vassals, the country thrust back into the caste system that the ancient Japanese used to follow.

Now their are clans fighting each other for the throne, even clans trying to take over the areas of other clans. Where will you fit in this new chaotic system? Will you be able to handle it? Only time will tell.

Ryuu closed his eyes, realizing that it had come to something he had not wanted sooner than he had expected. He wanted to hire Yukimura-san, and she was right to demand an explanation as to why. The problem was, it was not an explanation he wanted to give. All the same, her implicit trust in him, while fine for the moment, could eventually become a problem. In truth, she needed to be willing to second-guess him. He was not perfect, after all, and in some matters he might prove fallacious.

So why was it so damn hard? Why did he still rebel against the idea of telling her? It was certainly not because he feared for his life when she found out; Shintate-dono was reasonable enough to know that years of faithful service were more important than the meaning of his name. Even if she didn't, her father had, and if there was one person whose judgment should ever be trusted implicitly, it was Shintate-sama. Ryuu found himself wishing, not for the first time, that the man were still alive.

But wishing didn't get anyone anywhere. It had not saved his family, and it would not save their cause now. "There is something you must hear. Come with me." For once, he did not phrase his statement in terms of a request. There were things that needed to be said, and he wasn't about to do it out here in the open. Instead, Ryuu led Sakura to his study, where he prepared some tea in silence before choosing to speak. In all likelihood, this would try her patience, but he needed the moment to collect his thoughts; a rare circumstance for the ever-poised Ryuu.

Inhaling deeply, Ryuu held his breath for a moment before letting it out in a small sigh. He would be as simple and direct as possible. No cloaking his meaning in cryptic words, no veiling the truth with saccharine gloss as did the political sorts he'd disliked since he was old enough to spot a lie.

"As to the matter of Yukimura-san," he began, deciding that the matter should be laid out as logically as possible before his own experience came anywhere near it, "I think the possibility of the man being a spy is present, but low. He claimed not to know of the Kan incident, and I believe that this was genuine. The story he told was extraordinary, I agree, but a spy would have made use of a more convincing, less incriminating lie than a full-scale abandonment of his duty." he paused, debating to himself one last time before plowing onward. "Additionally, I have seen that sort of empty look before. Indeed, I once wore it myself."

He paused to sip his tea, knowing that the rest of the explanation would have to follow quickly, lest he be left dealing with questions thrust at him in an order contrary to understanding. "As you know, my family name is Tachibana. A common enough name, perhaps, but my family is more recognizable than that. I trust you know of the history surrounding the Neo-Shinsengumi? The founder, Shin'ichi Tachibana, was my grandfather." Sword-callused hands gripped his teacup tightly, the only evidence of the strain that telling the story was beginning to produce.

Reaching into his gi, he removed something from between the layers, setting it on the table between them. The photograph was slightly battered around the edges, and showed a beautiful woman in her thirties with eyes the same color as Ryuu's, wearing an expensive-looking red kimono. Upon her lap sat a little girl, no more than eight or so, with a radiant smile and the same eyes, apparently regarding whoever was behind the camera with profound affection, for she appeared to be reaching out towards the photographer.

"My mother and sister," he said, tone flat, but not nearly as strong as it normally was. "Both killed by the head of their clan, along with my father. When Okaa-ue married a farmer instead of a samurai, succession passed to her sister's husband, since Shin'ichi had no sons. The man was named Edo, and it was he who ordered their deaths. I was told it had been the work of the Ishin Shishi, but truth has a way of revealing itself to one who seeks it. Edo's was the first life I ever took, but the damage was already done. His line of succession was secure, since I had made myself a traitor at fifteen." A self-deprecating smirk twisted his lips, and he shook his head. It was apparent that he was troubled by his family's fate even now, though perhaps only to those who would know him well enough to detect the slight rasp his tone took on every time his eyes met the photograph, especially the expression on the little girl's face.

"I had the same look Yukimura-san wears when Shintate-sama found me. He knew who I was, and took me in anyway. You can see, perhaps, why I might be inclined to help this man. Thus, I ask you not to trust me completely in this. Take all the information you have into consideration, and make your decision the best you can. None will fault you for it, and if they do, I shall personally see to it that they understand their error." With that, he lapsed once more into silence, moving the teacup to his lips once again, awaiting some form of response. He hated to admit, but he could not predict what it would be. He knew Shintate-dono well, but this was far and away beyond the sort of experience she'd dealt with in his presence, that much was apparent.

Shizuka set aside the last of her dishes, deciding that she probably wouldn't be able to stomach anymore. Edo-san was rather quiet, which was odd enough in itself, but Nishimura-san seemed to be inclined to behave as though they were not acquainted, aside from his initial reaction.

If that was what he wanted, she supposed she could take the cue, as she doubted it would do any harm. "Yes," she replied levelly in regard to the gardens, "I would be happy to do so, if you are so inclined."

There was a strange warmth in his eyes, she reflected, one that had not been present before. Was it possible he'd some to some sort of resolution about something? She hoped so; he'd come off as a bit... lost last time, and she knew well enough that it was not an easy feeling to deal with. She listened intently to Yamada-san's story, interested to hear fragments from a life not her own as she always was. Other people simply fascinated Shizuka- she was the sort of person who could listen for hours as a shepherd discussed his flock, or a farmer the effect weather would have on the rice crop. such things, she supposed, might have bored another, but she listened not for the technical details- though she had picked up quite a few- but for the way in which a person told their stories. Yamada-san seemed to have a profound respect for his father, and it warmed her to think of it.

her eyes were drawn back to Nishimura-san; he was not eating, and this concerned her. She would not be so rude as to inquire after it at the table, but... Her expression assumed a slight frown. He honestly didn't look too well, either, as though he'd taken an unlucky hit or two recently. Even so, if he wished to maintain the appearance of strangers, Shizuka would remain closemouthed until later.

It had been Gin's very nature to be always wary despite how carefree he may choose to present himself to everyone else. One of the many reasons that he never fails to see the slightest change in almost everything. However, he had decided to ignore it for now as his attention was taken by the sudden change in countenance by the Lady Edo. The charm that had been given personally by the Lady Mikoto of the Fukuda clan had been broken. This added more trouble to his already uneasy feelings yet he could not show such emotion in front of other people especially towards his Mistress. Instead, he took his seat and had a warm smile upon his face as he tried to comfort the ominous thoughts that his Lady might have. "My Lady Edo, I greatly apologize for my late appearance! Shall we enjoy the meal now? And if you would like, I believe it would not hinder your schedule for tomorrow if we pay a visit to the Fukuda Household."

Onyx eyes gazed at Gin as she took a look at the broken carnelian charm and gave a nod. "Yes, please do and about your tardiness do expect my word about it later." She said with a finality. Assurance was something she needed and she knew that Gin understood that. Keeping the charm, she straightened herself and tried to remember why she wanted to have a dinner with everyone else. It was because, she wanted to experience the semblance of warmth even with strangers in every sense around her. This was her selfish wish even if it would only be after dinner like in that fairy tale about the magic lasting only until midnight. "Pardon me for the heavy atmosphere." She spoke with much gentle remorse as she glanced at everyone present on the table. "Let us enjoy our dinner." At that said, she smiled and then took attention of the stories that Yamada-san had spoken about. It did gave her a sense of comfort in its mirth and warmth. "Your father is definitely a great and generous man. I wonder how different this world would be if those men were still alive and reigning... Our fathers..."

Drinking her tea, she had melancholy feeling around her and yet it did not prevent her appearance to be more of a fragile beauty and have a small smile. "Namatame-san, those cherry blossoms are what we call the Omuro. They had been personally given to the Edo by the Fukuda Clan as a gift for peace. I have been told it is the kind to bloom late among all other cherry blossoms. I am quite fond of them, it is good that they had been kept there even when I was away for so long." Aimi looked at Shizuka and had a cheerful countenance as she recalled when Mikoto-neesan had visited the Edo for it. Mamoru and Takahiro was also there and they enjoyed helping in planting them as dirt covered them. It was truly a happy memory she would keep deep in the recess of her mind. "I am glad that you find it as beautiful as I do. It does give me a sense of serenity when I come to the gardens. If time would allow, why don't we visit the gardens together sometime and share tea and stories?"

Gin continued eating quietly as he listened to the conversations around him and he chose to interject when the proclaimed Murakami emissary replied to Namatame-san's statement. "By the way Murakami's agent, we have not yet heard your name. It would be quite the trouble if you stay here and we only call you as such title." His eyes gazed at the newcomer as he intended to hear his response despite hearing the name Nishimura-san from the lips of their female ronin. Aimi cast the men both her attentions as she concluded that Gin was truly suspecting the intentions of the man especially caring the name of the Murakami. It could not be helped that they had to be precocious in all that they do.

"Nishimura, Ren. Under the employ of Mamoru Murakami for five years now." There was no real honor in how the man spoke of Murakami, his gaze sliding to rest upon Gin... He shifted in how he had been sitting, the tension brought by suspicion hung heavily in the air. One could cut it with a butter knife.

"I've been asked to provide assistance in future assignments." He peered to Lady Edo, clearing his throat. "A certain purging." He peered to Shizuka at this, his words that he had spoke to her prior should have started to make sense. Whatever reason she had been here, there was no reason she would join in on the purging of a household.

His business was stated at that moment. Rather Gin chose to believe the Ghost or not, was up to his own volition. He had no reason to truly trust Gin himself, he could turn on the Lady of the house at any moment... For some reason, his distrust in him didn't settle well on the assassin's shoulders. Who would proclaim themselves of the Murakami, besides one who held a wish of suicide? Perhaps he had not planned this the best. Perhaps, going about disguising himself as one of the servants would of been a better idea. Or, you know, stating that he was here to serve the Edo estate. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid!

He sighed, lacing his fingers together as he peered over to Shizuka. Blinking he shook his head, it was truly a strange place to run into her. He'd have to do some looking into it later.

"However." Ren spoke after his momentary pause, "My business with Lady Edo seems less and less prominent each minute, and quite the opposite with Shizuka." There was no point in hiding his affiliation with her. If they sought after finding him guilty of their suspicions to bring the same upon the female ronin; he'd have no problem in leaving with her, and presenting her to Mamoru. Good or bad, there was always a chance anything could work. His speech seemed weird, and day by day, seemed to be further from the culture of Japan than the one before.

The ronin had been interested by the account of the trees; her master had once taken her to visit the Fukuda, as a large number of the family had devoted themselves to religious service, and he had wished to instill in her some of that devotion, if not the particular direction in which it was cast. It seemed that everything ran in circles, after all. But then Nishimura-san spoke, and her attention was diverted elsewhere.

"A... purging...?" Shizuka blinked slowly, eyes flashing quickly to Edo-san. What the man who called himself Ghost was saying made little sense in the context she had come to know the noblewoman. Perhaps she had misinterpreted something, but the ronin had believed the head of the Edo as indisposed to violence as she, or at least almost. Shizuka's own aversion admittedly crossed from mere ideology into something approaching asceticism, though not one connected with religion as such. Still, if she were to be said to revere anything, it was life itself.

To suggest that Edo-san was to be party to a purge was most unsettling indeed. Perhaps she had no choice? Was the Emperor or this Murakami person forcing Edo-san's hand? No, she did not believe that the woman would be so easily manipulated. If she were, Shizuka would have been guilty of a miscalculation most grave.

She watched the others for a moment, noting something not quite hostile, but certainly not friendly passing between Nishimura-san and Gin-san. Perhaps there had been a miscommunication somewhere, that the person Nishimura-san worked for was not aware of Edo-san's true intentions? But what did that say about his leader? green-yellow eyes closed for a moment; it had been so very long since she had played the game of political machinations. Actually, she never really had, and even now she was less directly involved than anyone else, but that did not mean she could watch as passively as an audience might at the theater.

She took a calming breath, resolving that all would reveal itself in time, were she meant to know it, and reopened her eyes in time to see that Nishimura-san was once again looking in her direction. She might have said something, but he spoke first, and her eyebrows furrowed ever so slightly. "I'm afraid I do not understand, Nishimura-san. There is perhaps something you would ask of me?" She almost hoped that was the case; at least she did not bring any extra motives to anything, despite what she kept hidden. Something asked of her would surely be simpler than this odd dance of interactions and words playing out in front of her eyes. Shizuka was free to act or speak as she chose: she possessed few secrets not her own, and was even less bound by notions of clan and kin. Those had been long replaced by personal vows of nonharm, and she doubted that such a request would be made, since Nishimura-san knew at least this much, as did Edo-san, though perhaps less explicitly.

The words kept floating through the air. Bits and pieces of sentences filing through the bamboo floors and floating through the tiniest cracks in the windows and doors. Most of them stayed around her head, dancing in and out of her ears as she stared down at the picture of the little girl and a very beautiful Japanese woman. It was like looking into the painting of some crazed artist, Picasso or Dali. Who were these people in this picture? And Tachibana... he loved them. She could feel it in his aura and there was no doubt it was in his voice as he spoke of them. Sakura could not read people as well as he, but she'd made a point of picking out little hints of Tachibana. She wanted to know so much about him, but he was so closed off all she could do was nit pick at his mannerisms, the sound of his voice, the way his eyes changed light when he was angry or happy. She liked to say she knew Tachibana well but right now, he was different. She had never seen these emotions from him, and she'd never felt whatever it was she was feeling as she mulled over the story she'd just been told. All she could think was, I'm such a bitch. Here I was ready to stab him for making tea, for making me wait, and all he wanted was time to think. How could I have been so selfish? How could I have never known this?

Her green eyes darkened with the tornado of emotions inside her and she finally lifted them to look at Tachibana. It was probably only the second or third time she really looked at him. It was definitely the first time she'd done it while he watched. Mostly, Sakura could only memorize his face when he wasn't paying any attention to her. She'd done it a lot as a child, curious about the man her father seemed to adore, but now she did it for something else. He was so handsome, and after looking at the picture of his mother and sister, all she could see were her eyes. That bright chartreuse. The same color as a brand new Labellum bloom. His family was gone. He knew what she knew. Tachibana-kun knew the emptiness of having no family. They were more alike than Sakura had ever imagine. They shared more than just a great passion for justice and rightness.

This idea, brought on a new turn of thoughts for Sakura. Tachibana-kun had other reasons for fighting with the Shintate or the Neo-Ishin Shishi. He needed to avenge his fallen family, wrongfully taken from earth before their time. Sakura hadn't realized, but she'd been staring at Tachibana this whole time and couldn't seem to look away. Some strange wave of sadness came over her and she bit her lip to fight it off. Tachibana needed help. He needed to know that there were people willing to help him fight for his family. The Shintate's had a second mission. Fight for justice and vengeance. It was the only way to restore honor to the Tachibana's.

She almost bit through her lip, trying to hold in the urge to cry out. It didn't work. Sakura leapt over the small table and wrapped her arms around Tachibana-kun's neck, burying her face in his long black hair. She didn't cry, but she did release a long, heavy sigh, closing her eyes and just holding him close. It felt like she may never let him go, but she knew she would have to. When Sakura would pull away, it would be awkward, but she couldn't regret it. Somewhere in her mind, a childish thought kept running around that he just needed to be hugged. Sakura was daring enough to do it. Another reason she couldn't keep it up for long was her position after jumping over the table. Her knees were precariously perched on the edge, her body dangling over his lap as she held onto his neck. It wasn't particularly comfortable, but it would work for now.

"You are a great man, Ryuu Tachibana." Giving him one last squeeze, she pushed herself back, finding a steadier resting spot in the middle of the table. The tea cups had been knocked over, and some tea from the pot has slopped out of the spout. She didn't care. Though not smiling, Sakura's eyes were bright with promise. She bowed before him, looking comical on the table top, but still sincere.

"As long as you are at my side, I will serve you until I die. I treasure your opinions and your decisions." Sitting back up, Sakura let her lips twitch up in a realization of the situation. "I know I'm psychotic..." She whispered, still looking hard into his eyes. "But I mean every word. If you think Yukimura can be an asset, than you know better than I." Sighing she shrugged. The table top was kind of comfortable.

"I can't say I'm particularly comfortable, simply because I'm not my father. But he was a better judgment of character than my mother or myself, and so are you. I can trust you both." Sighing, Sakura picked up the tea cups she'd knocked over, rather nonchalantly. It was as if the entire occurrence before was typical in the life of Shintate leader and right hand man.

When she'd dived at him, Ryuu had briefly entertained the absurd notion that she was going to attack him after all. Which, in all honesty, was why he hadn't moved. He'd devoted his life to the Shintates' cause, and he knew he could not alter his course again. He had no death wish, but he knew inside himself that there was simply no other place for him to go, and going nowhere would kill him too, only much more slowly.

When she'd wrapped her arms around him instead, he'd stiffened on instinct- too surprised to react in any comprehensible way for a few seconds as the information processed. She was... hugging him, perhaps. That was certainly what it felt like, at any rate. There was something he was supposed to do here- ah, yes, he remembered now. The question was: could he?

It was a bit awkward and overall quite tentative, but he managed to regain the presence of mind to raise his arms to encircle her upper back. He hadn't been hugged in... too many years to remember. Propriety truthfully demanded that he should immediately move away, but his humanity, which he tried so often to forget but never truly could, was also making a demand: that he accept this measure of comfort from the only person left who knew anything of him at all.

Sakura was warm. The thought struck him as odd for two reasons; first that he had it at all, and second that his mental reference had not been to Shintate-dono, but Sakura. That was most certainly unusual, and he chalked it up to his presently less-than-perfectly-contained state. He hastily released her when she moved back up onto the table and straightened the teacups that had fallen. A great man? Him? He shook his head, regarding her steadily.

"You are mistaken, Shintate-dono. I am but a man. The greatness of a subordinate is only a reflection of the leader's- a moon to the sun. And it is I who must follow you, for the moon cannot make its own light." He smiled then, and the expression did not leave his face through the rest of what she said. In truth, he was pleased that she was still willing to trust him after all of that. Sakura was more like her father than she realized, but she was also most definitely different. What she referred to as a psychosis was to him an enthusiasm unchained. Certainly in need of some control, but not a bad quality by any means.

He might have stayed to speak a bit more, but there was something that needed attending to. "Forgive me, Shintate-dono, but there is a man I must inform of his freedom, if you would allow. I shall be back shortly, and then perhaps there will be plans to make." The Kan incident still needed dealing with, after all, and it seemed that certain matters were drawing closer to confrontation than he would have liked.

His path down the hallway was intercepted by a messenger in brown and white, escorted by a few of his own guard. "Please, sir," the man bowed, offering what appeared to be a sealed letter, "I have here a message from my Lady Edo of the Neo-Shinsengumi." Ryuu's face fell out of the lingering smile and straight into a slight frown as he accepted the letter.

Addressing his own men, he betrayed not a hint of emotion. "See to it that this man is fed and allowed to rest. If he came by horse, make sure it is taken care of as well." He might not have any reason to love the Edo, but that was no reason to treat they of their messengers with anything less than the best courtesy possible. Who knew what the letter contained, after all?

He arrived outside the holding room, waving off the guards with a truncated gesture. The men exchanged glances, but shrugged and moved off anyway. Over his time among the Shintate, their trust in him had become complete, and he was glad of it. too much explaining would have hindered efficiency. He unlocked the door with the master key he kept on his person, and stepped inside.

"My apologies, Yukimura-san," he stated formally, bowing. "We have kept you here for far too long, I am afraid. Should you wish it, you are free to go. However... my employer wishes to extend the offer of a contract to you as well. We have thought over what you said, and decided in the end to take you at your word. Should you seek kin and clan once more, we would offer you the Shintate." He regarded the man for a second, wondering if their similarity would end here or if Yukimura-san too would choose to take up service with the clan.

"I will not force your choice by remaining. The grounds are open to you, should you wish to leave. If not, we will be in the same place we were earlier. There are a few things you should be brought up to speed on." Ryuu exited, pacing back down the same hallway, looking almost wistfully out a window at the practice yard outside. Diplomacy, he had discovered long ago, was far harder than fighting itself.

"We have a letter from the Edo," he spoke without preamble upon reentering the room, tossing the envelope onto the table in front of the Shintate clan leader. Noticing the picture still on the table, he picked it up, a slight softening of his eyes the only indication that he even noticed it as it disappeared back into his clothing.

Sakura nodded to Tachibana-kun as he left and moved off the table. The picture was still laying there and she looked at it once more. She had pictures all over her home of her family. A beautiful portrait painting of both her parents that she could look at whenever she please. All Ryuu had was that photograph. Sighing in frustration, Sakura opened a door to let in some fresh air, leaning against its frame. She wanted to do more for him, but she knew there was nothing. Many people had tried to help Sakura through her loss, but in the end, the loss is always with you. You cannot fight it, avoid it, or even try to fill the void. It is there forever.

Looking up, Sakura watched as the sun dipped below the trees. Another day had passed them by. This one had been insane. It seemed everything important was happening today and it was wearing horribly on Sakura's shoulders. The clan leader had so much to mull over and make decisions on.

But all she could think about was the way he smelled. Something faint and familiar. Sakura had always known the scent, and known it to be one indicative of Ryuu, but she'd never paid it any attention until she'd stuck her nose so close to his skin.

"Ah!" She hollered and threw her hands in the air. "What in the hell is wrong with me?!" Pulling her hair back in embarrassment at her own thoughts, Sakura pulled a rubber band from her wrist and tied her red locks into a bun. Her neck and face were burning, even with the cool breeze of the evening blowing through the door. She paced the floor, glancing at the photo every so often.

She just wanted to see him smile like that again. Maybe she even wanted to hug him once more, feel his arms around her. Just as friends, of course! For Tachibana-kun was a dear friend and comrade. He was her second in command. She would serve him until she died, that was certain, but merely as a dear friend.

"I am so stupid..." Sakura whispered to herself just as Tachibana reentered the room. A letter? From Edo? Her heart skipped a beat when she looked at Tachibana and saw the smile he'd had was gone. A letter from an enemy would do that, but it made Sakura feel funny. Did she miss it? Shaking her head openly, Sakura picked up the letter from the table and grabbed an opener.

Her eyes narrowed and her brow furrowed as she read over the contents of the letter about three times before handing to Tachibana-kun with a heavy flick of her wrist.

"Holy Christ." She whispered, taking a special swear word from her mother. "Lady Edo wants to investigate the House of Shintate." Closing her eyes and covering her face, Sakura slid down the door frame to her hindquarters. "At the Emperor's request." This was... bad. This was more than bad. What were they going to do? How were they going to keep all the people under control? Every one here wanted Shinsengumi blood, including Sakura. But at least she knew when was a better time. They would have to pull of their greatest act ever. And they'd have to do it fast. Preparations for food, guard, cleaning the mansion, setting up places to conference. This would take all night. No rest for wicked, Sakura supposed.

"Ryuu--" Sakura cut off the word but too late. Her face blushed, but she turned to look outside, hoping he couldn't see. "Tachibana. We will need to make sure the people understand this situation and that no one is to harm the Edo unless ordered. I won't have my clan mindlessly shed blood on the grounds of my father." Her voice had been soft and girly when she spoke his name. She felt stupid and weak. So on fixing her mistake, Sakura spoke harshly and with a voice she knew was her own. Another long day was ahead of them, she couldn't be thinking about things that didn't matter... or even exist.

Toshio watched as the released the other slave. He was happy that the man was free. He pushed a basket through the bars "My father didn't teach me much other then how to defend myself and how to hunt. My mother though taught me to weave baskets and how to make pottery. I give you a Asai basket one of the last. And good sir enjoy your freedom."

Yamada watched as the agent spoke and then the ronin. He then looked to his lady to see her response. He stood up and smiled "My lady if i may i will excuse myself from the table seems matter of state affairs. I do have a gift for you though so if you would come find me after dinner. Good day my lady." He stood and sang all the way out the door. He felt uncomfortable with all the whos who.

Uneasiness, it was truly the atmosphere covering the dining hall. Aimi had wanted to discuss such matters at the privacy of her office and simply enjoy the meal in hearty warmth however, life only happens when it is not on your expectations. Silence reigned over her for a brief moment as she took notice of Yamada-san excusing himself and proclaiming he had a gift for her. The Lady of the Edo Clan wondered what could warrant that she should have something given to her. "I do hope you enjoyed your meal, Yamada-san. I will send a message when I would be able to meet you later on. Till then, thank you for sharing your stories and warmth." A smile was reciprocated and she truly found pleasure in having Yamada's presence around her. The man was so simple and it made her feel envy for that particular trait. In any case, she watched the man exited through the door and decided to see him after all prior affairs were done.

With this in her mind, her raven-colored eyes gazed at Gin, Namatame-san and the newcomer having his name introduced as Nishimura Ren. The probability of him becoming Mamoru's subordinates is getting higher by the minute. The "purging" was supposed to be only known between the Neo-Shinsengumi and the Emperor. Adding to that, he had been in the Murakami Clan for 5 years. It seemed he had been in service since Mamoru took over the clan by brutal force. She was not present in the country during those times but news of such severity did not escape her. "It would not come to pass as you might expect Nishimura-san." Placing her hands upon her lap, she gazed at the said man with eyes filled with seriousness and the air of nobility. "I have informed the Emperor about the correct procedures of investigation before coming to such a command. As the matter of fact, I used one of the privileges of a clan under the Neo-Shinesengumi in doing so."

Drinking her tea with such elegance befitting of her stature, she looked at Namatame-san concluding the word such as purge might have caused her an unwelcome stirring of beliefs and the definite affiliation between the two did make her curious. The teacup in her hand was placed upon the table as the warmth she had shown earlier had been dissipated and before them was the formidable Leader of the Edo. She had decided to wear the mask she had been bestowed with. The matter about the Murakami envoy appearance should be decided without further ado. "Nishimura-san, I would not deny the aid that your Lord had instructed you to do. Your assistance would be appreciated tomorrow morning. I would be visiting the Shintate Clan to begin my investigations the subject for the purging that the Emperor had ordered." There was no way she would allow herself to be manipulated like a marionette. She was certain that having this man by her side was the machinations of those two. They must be plotting still unknown to her. In any scenario, she knew that fighting Mamoru and Takahiro in mind games were truly a feat to be done nevertheless; she would not surrender no matter what the case may be.

“Your order from your superior is yours to follow however; I only have one rule as you stay in my household. Violence is prohibited. Learn it well and we would not have any unneeded altercations. Is that clear for you, Nishimura-san.” One would wonder if her last words were meant to be an inquiry or an order. Her eyes did not waver as she looked at Nishimura-san with those onyx eyes of hers. Her face maybe of a fragile beauty yet, she never failed to deliver her strength with her words and actions. “Welcome to the Edo Main House, Nishimura-san. Please consider this to be your home for the remainder of your stay here. I would send a message of gratitude to the Lord of the Murakami later on. Now, eat your meal. I do believe that you require it.” She finally raised her hand as she gestured for the man to dine the food prepared for him. He may be a person of suspicious origin however; her courtesy to guests and to people would not be trifled with such matters. Drinking her tea once again, she gave particular glances towards Namatame-san and Nishimura-san. Her curiosity was not yet satiated regarding about the connection between the two. She had feeling that it would be an interesting bond to have it forge. "It would appear that you two have met already. I would be grateful if anyone of you could share a tale about it."

Gin did not speak anymore. There was no need for his interventions since the Lady Edo had finally spoken about the matter presented before them. She never failed to amaze him in every unexpected occurrence. The Lady would never be flustered or lose her dignity in any event given to her. She would show her resolve matched with elegance intrinsic in her. These were her pride and her charisma that he was attracted and was certain that the Emperor and Murakami find very annoying. The Lady Aimi Edo was an invaluable leader in more ways than one. He takes honor in serving his mistress although; the sense of danger did not leave him until now. It would appear this is not caused by the man named Nishimura Ren. There was something else that made him feel very troubled. He truly wanted to know what could it be.

Daisuke gave a formal bow to the man as he gave him his freedom, and the offer. He had not the time to reply as he walked out looking troubled. He was just picking up his confiscated weaponry when the man in the cell next to him pushed a basket through for him.
“Thank you, I hope that you too are forgiven for your sins. Whatever they may be.” Daisuke said to him, taking the basket.

Daisuke started down the corridor, past a certain plant pot. A soft caw emitted from it but the magpie made no move, the human didn’t have the treasure. How inconvenient.

Daisuke walked past the room the man and woman who had interrogated him were in just in time to hear “Lady Edo”.
Lady? Daisuke thought. He stopped. Surely a mishearing. Before he could contemplate further, a mass of feathers and beak attacked him, cawing loudly. Despite the commotion, it only attracted a soldier and two servants who were nearby.
“Get off me you stupid bird!” Yelled Daisuke. The magpie had the element of surprise and forced him off balance. Both man and bird fell to the floor. Daisuke managed to get a grasp on the magpie. The bird stared him down silently. Slowly he let go, the magpie settled next to him.
“Stupid bird, what do you want anyway?” He asked the bird, not that he would get a worded reply. The magpie hopped up onto Daisuke’s head, and no amount of dislodging and prodding would remove it. Realisation dawned on Daisuke that it wanted the shiny emblem on his missing helmet.
That’s a good point, where is my helmet? He thought.

He did eventually find his helmet, which had been left in the room where he was first brought to. The magpie sat upon the helmet proudly, after a few attempts to fly away with it (and failing), decided that he would stay with his treasure to guard it. Daisuke did not mind, being on his own so often he was now glad of any company; the magpie could stay if it wished.

Someone nearby said something that sounded like “Edo” and reminded Daisuke of his earlier query. Who was this Lady Edo? He had left behind a Lord Edo, which he remembers all too well. He decided that he would have to enquire with the head of the Shintate clan. After asking a few people it turned out that she was the woman who had been interrogating him earlier. Returning to the room where he had heard them speaking before. He waited until he could hear no more talking, although he stood respectfully out of audible range of them, from the room and then knocked on the door.

"I met her after I returned to the Kan estate." Ren began, anything to get the topic of what he should and shouldn't be doing. Including the fact that he probably needed to eat, seeing as he hadn't in a few days... was amazing he was still even alert. He folded his hands up under his chin, peering across at Shizuka for the time being.

"I took the bodies of the children on Ma-..." He cleared his throat, "My own behest." He peered to Edo, as if looking to see if she had taken note of what he had almost said prior.

"Buried them on a hill overlooking a small valley near the estate proper." His eyes came to rest once again on the female ronin. " I came back to the Estate to see if Lord Mamoru and the others were still waiting."

The next thing he would say is what he hadn't mentioned to Shizuka prior, or even Mamoru himself. "I went back to that estate to look for any survivors that remained after my search turned up no remainders of the Murakami." He reached a hand out, tapping the top of the table they sat at. "I had by the point Shizuka, succumb to the air about the Estate. The air, stained with death, the burning smell of charred flesh." He brought his hand back to rest with his other under his chin.

"When I saw her, I thought perhaps she had been one of them... Surveying the destruction. So I followed her." He narrowed his eyes upon the woman he was speaking of, smiling somewhat kindly. "She eventually figured out that I, who little could even recognize, much less take sense I had been in their shadow, was indeed right behind her in the night." He peered to Lady Edo.

"She's a smart girl. Certainly not one to be underestimated." He gave a shrug of his shoulders, continuing. "After I spoke to her for a bit, walked in silence, and all that like. I could come to the assumption she wasn't one of the Kan, and could safely take my leave. Little did I know..." He sighed, peering back to Shizuka.

"That I'd run into her here." He clapped his hands together, lacing the fingers of his hands together before leaning forward and resting the point of his chin against them. "Everything I've said in this room doesn't leave the safety of the Edo Clan, lest Mamoru find me growing weak and likely to question orders."

Ryuu nodded upon receiving Sakura's orders. All seemed to be back to normal, with the exception of the fact that neither of them could seem to use the other's surname upon first effort. It was most odd, really; though he personally had yet to slip out loud, he was finding it difficult to avoid the error in his mind.

For her, though, it was not so grave an error. Surely she knew that her father had called him Ryuu-kun? Then again, perhaps this was not the case. In front of the men, composure and status awareness had been maintained at all times, but no so when the two were speaking alone. Aloud, he expressed only a fraction of this. "You might call me Ryuu if it is your wish, Shintate-dono. Shintate-sama was likewise inclined."

The Edo... Ryuu fell into contemplative silence, passive mask of neutrality not faltering for even a moment as he considered the likelihood of a visit from the house that had been the downfall of his own. Such was not something that would be revealed, of course, given that to do so might mean a negative tally in whatever count this Lady Edo might keep of the chances they were traitors to the Chrysanthemum Throne.

If he was a traitor for holding the views and ideals that he did, than he had never been more sure of his honor in his life. To be counted in the ranks of those who stood against such a tyrant as Takahiro was to be an ally of the people of Japan, and a higher cause he could not conceive. Still, they were not barbarians, and they would not engage in such dishonorable behavior as the taking of hostages or cruel interrogations. If they could not hold themselves to better conduct than the very corruption they fought against, then they would be doing nothing but replacing one despot with another.

No, they would be above that. In fact, their behavior would be impeccable, down to the last man. He would see to this personally. "I will see to it... but I do believe we have a guest," he continued, and sure enough, the knock on the door followed their silence. "Enter," he entreated, raising his volume enough that Yukimura-san would know the request was meant for him.

**

Shizuka's gaze drifted first to Edo-san. It was good to have her initial impression of the woman reaffirmed: she would not be the sort to order any sort of purge. Still, the fact that she had been ordered to by the emperor himself had her concerned. Was he really so cruel a man as to order such a thing without investigation or trial? Surely this was unjust beyond common measure, and it sickened her heart to think of it as possible. Nobody should have that kind of authority, especially not one who might use it for such purposes. Whether the Shintate were treasonous or not mattered little when she thought of it that way. At least she knew that Edo-san would not allow anything to happen without a proper investigation. So why did she still dislike even the notion of it?

Turning back to Nishimura-san as he responded, she was slightly puzzled by the fact that he seemed to be directing the story to her. Perhaps he was hoping for corroboration? She would have no trouble giving it; he was telling no falsehood, after all, though she had not known he'd thought her to be one of the Kan. She did not fail to pick up on the slight hitch in his speech, but she did not know what it meant, and assumed he simply misspoke.

The recounting of the state of the mansion brought all the sensations back to her mind as surely as she was once again standing there, and she swore the smell was still in her nose. When she blinked, the images of the bodies flashed across her mind, and her stomach turned uncomfortably. Was this why Nishimura-san did not eat, even now? Was it possible he was tormented by the deed? She could not be sure, lacking any similar experience, but she hoped he would not starve himself for it. Such things would do no good now.

He was smiling, which she took to be unusual. Certainly, it was not an expression she had seen, though there was something in it that she found contagious, though her own was tempered by uncertainty, if no less genuine for it. Shizuka was a person of simple pleasures: reading under the shade, practicing her bladework, seeing people she knew expressing happiness. These were the things she treasured.

At his compliment, she wished to protest. Surely it had only been circumstance that had made his existence apparent to her; a lucky shadow, perhaps. But the words died before they could form on her tongue, and her eyes dropped to the table, a slight tinge of pink making itself apparent. What was it with people and saying such kind things today? It wasn't a particularly common occurrence for her, which made it all the stranger. She wondered how people like Edo-san could stand to be at the center of attention all the time. Did compliments grow wearisome, perhaps? It was hard to imagine.

His last comments were to her ears naturally translated as a request, and she raised her head, nodding once in response. She had been uncertain whether or not to reveal anything even to Edo-san, but since he had decided to, she would keep her peace about it, save to ensure the woman that Nishimura-san did not deceive. "Nishimura-san gives the account better than I could have," she offered kindly. "I had come upon the estate in my travels, searched for any who might remain, and left. As you know, there were none."

A moment of silence passed, and she pursed her lips before returning her attention to her erstwhile acquaintance. "Will you not eat anything, Nishimura-san?" Shizuka did not wish to be pushy, but he did not seem in overly good health, and a little sustenance would probably do him good.

"So you are the one responsible for their graves as Namatame-san informed me before." Aimi looked at Nishimura-san in a new light. It would appear this man has yet to be drowned in the abyss. She was glad about having the knowledge that there were still the possibility of men such as him under the command of Mamoru. It brought a sense of relief in her troubled heart for despite being enemies to where they currently stand, the Lady still viewed Mamoru and Takahiro as her friends. The interlude in his words had gone unnoticed by her and believed this was done under the volition of Nishimura-san. In that line of thought, she expressed her gratitude with a lachrymose smile. The expression made her more fragile than ever as if she would wither in a calm breeze yet painfully beautiful as well. Lady Edo was not aware of this as she remained in that way for a brief moment along with a few words. "Thank you, Nishimura-san."

After saying that, she touched her charm bracelet in a dreamlike manner as memories of the past flooded into her consciousness. The past was certainly an entity that would stay inside of her till the last of her days. Returning to reality, she gazed at Namatame-san who seemed to blush at being complimented. It did remind her of the times she would do so as well long ago. Now, it seemed impossible to have her heart flutter yet it does not mean she would not find comfort in the simplicity of things around her. "It is truly a wonder how fate works. No one could truly predict it." Aimi commented about the meeting of the two in the Kan Estate. There was nothing to doubt in the tale spoken to her unless Gin would have said otherwise.

Moreover, she had something to ask Nishimura-san. The possibility of him knowing anything personal might be slim however, he had been with Mamoru for those five years. "Nishimura-san, how does you Lord fare nowadays? He has the tendency to overwork himself and do things by himself most of the time." If there was any other underlying intentions except of care and worry, it was spoken perfectly without fail. Her eyes of onyx looked at Nishimura-san in sincerity. One would wonder what kind of relationship did she, Mamoru and Takahiro exactly had that it lead to such animosity in the end. "Is he eating properly? Does he still play the piano?" There was no doubt that Aimi still cared for the cruel man despite his actions when they met at the Palace. "You do not need to answer if you do not want to Nishimura-san, I believe I might have said too much. Like Namatame-san said, you should eat."

The Lady Edo said with a wave of favor still, it was clear as day she wanted to know the well being of the Murakami Head. It is a fact that they would never agree on what should be done to Japan and she would prevent them from doing anything drastic. Aimi was certain about that however, it does not mean she would stop being friends with Takahiro and Mamoru. Therefore, her affections towards the two would not dissipate.

Gin knew what his mistress was feeling. She was catering to many roles, a leader, a politician, a soldier, a noble, a lady, a friend and lastly as Aimi. He was impressed that the toll of carrying so many facades had yet to break her. The Lady was truly a person with great strength. It should be for her kind heart would not be able to bear it all if she does not have the ability to overcome it and without hesitation, Mamoru and Takahiro knew much about Aimi more than anyone else. So, why do these three friends have to suffer in such a fate of tragedies? What does the future holds for them and to the people awakened by their actions and resolve?

Daisuke entered, magpie and all. He bowed formally to them both before speaking.
“I have only two things to ask of you and I shall leave you to your matters promptly.”

“The first thing is I will accept your offer of a contract. It is a generous offer that I would be stupid to refuse.” He said in his most serious voice he could find. He wanted them to know he didn’t take decisions like this lightly.

“The second thing is, and I hope you will forgive my unfortunate eavesdropping, as I walked past I heard ‘Lady Edo’. When I left the Edo estate I was under a Lord Edo. I would just like some clarification on what I heard.” He asked them.

Sakura blushed more than she'd blushed her entire life when Tachibana spoke openly of her slip up. Calling him Ryuu, saying it out loud felt too intimate, much too... well it just wasn't something she thought she could do.

"Tousan was your mentor, your teacher, and he thought very fondly of you. It was his place to call you what he pleased, but I..." Leaning her head back against the sturdy frame of the door, she let one of her legs slide out before her. What would be so wrong with it? In private they could call each other whatever they wanted. She didn't mind him calling her Sakura. But would he? Once the evening breeze cooled her fiery cheeks, she looked over at him with a little smile.

"It will take some getting used to, but I think we practically grew up together. We are no different than brother or sister." That wasn't right, but it was all she could think of. It was a fair enough explanation for the situation she'd unwillingly put them both in. Nodding at it as if forcing herself to believe it, she pushed her head back against the door frame.

At the mention of an eavesdropper, Sakura was shocked. She hadn't heard anything, but then again her mind had been occupied with other things of a personal nature. All these emotions in her were starting to get annoying. Embarrassment, rage, hopelessness... and most of them were still quietly churning in her gut. Waiting for the right moment to burst forth and possibly bring her world tumbling down around her. Sakura needed time to meditate, or get really, really drunk.

So, he excepted the offer. That was fast.

"It would not be stupid to refuse," Sakura spoke, not really thinking of it before she said anything, "it would have been a personal choice made by yourself. We cannot judge a man's decisions. And therefore, we do not judge you for staying with us." She looked up at him from her seat on the floor. "But be warned, if you make one wrong move I will slice your throat." It was a little over the top, but Sakura needed to release some steam, and now seemed like a better time than never. Turning her eyes away from him, and rather conveniently missing Tachibana's, she sighed and wiped at her face.

"As for the Edos, Lady Edo has taken over the clan since the death of her Uncle. They are coming over for a little visit tomorrow." She spoke the last sentence in a sarcastic, high-pitched voice indicative of her irritation at the situation. Everyone knew Sakura was very outspoken, and not one to lie about her feelings or her beliefs. The clan leader was worried for the reactions of her people, but more afraid she would be the one to screw everything up.

He ignored those prodding questions as to why he wouldn't eat, Nishimura peering towards the Lady of the Clan with a benign interest - ears twitching as he heard the question regarding his own Lord.

"He still plays." He answered, a fond look seeming to light in the weary Ghost's eyes. Something of speaking of Mamoru's good side brought a strange, calming happiness upon the man - a smile curling those lips of his. "And as for eating, he eats better than I do - for certain."

He chuckled at this, it was a stab at self-humor. These people felt more at home to him than those of the clan he served did - It was a warmer atmosphere, now that the tension hanging in the air was gone. Shifting in how he was sitting once again he drew his elbows back, folding his hands in his lap.

"It is a wonderful melody which is played, it sounds... Haunting, sometimes, the way in which it spreads throughout the corridors of his estate. The Lord is certainly well practiced with it. Though I expected none less from a Prodigy." It was clear now he knew Mamoru's father, and worked for that Sub-Clan for quite sometime - he leaned back, recollecting his memories of the days prior to their dispatchment to the Kan estate. He peered to the food across the table, certainly unable to help himself but wonder what the delights before him tasted like - those thoughts of what he saw at that estate stuck in the back of his head. The taste of that air strong still upon his tongue, the guilt hanging over his head like a hatchet.

He leaned forward proper, it would be rude to deny his host. He fell silent, praise of Mamoru done with, as he began to help himself to those things spread out before him - seeming reluctant to do so.

If Ryuu was somewhat puzzled by the presence of a magpie on the man's head (which he was), he did an admirable job of concealing it. Instead, he simply inclined his head, choosing not to speak where Sakura had, at least until she got to the part about the Edo.

"If you wish to remain concealed tomorrow so as not to attract attention, this can be arranged." It would be a simple matter to ensure the man was not on the grounds tomorrow if he wished to avoid it. "Should you choose to remain, you should take precautions to avoid those who might know you." For Ryuu, that was all that needed to be said. The man could make his own decisions about how much risk he was willing to take; it was enough for the second-in-command that he was not a fool. He'd found that sometimes that kind of trust could inspire more caution or creativity than explicit orders.

Turning back to Sakura, he was mildly confused by the redness of her face, but chose not to comment. It wasn't as though he minded, after all. "It would be improper for anyone but you to receive her," he counseled, "and you must be very careful what you say. As you know, we cannot appear to be plotting against the emperor, though I do not think we need seem sycophantic, either. As long as our attitudes do not suggest treason, everything should go smoothly. I will be there, too, of course."

He stood, bowing to Sakura. "For now, I go to make preparations. The men will need to be briefed, and the grounds furnished appropriately." In truth, there was a great deal more to oversee even than that: meals, lodgings, the right flags to be flown... it was going to be a long day, it seemed. Not that it hadn't already been. It was with this in mind that he decided to see to these things personally. Sakura had been through enough for the moment, and it was she that would need to be most rested tomorrow, for her stint as host to the Edo.

Not once did it cross his mind that he might also need to prepare himself. Such things were by now automatic, were they not?

Shizuka wondered if it would ever be like this for her, to be able to talk of a mutual acquaintance with someone. It was clear that the both of them had some consideration for the one called Mamoru Murakami. having never met the man herself, she could not engage in the conversation that was being had, but she did not mind listening as the ebb and flow of voices filled the space around her.

Nishimura-san had finally begun to eat, and for that she was grateful. If her suspicion had been correct and he found it difficult due to what had transpired at the Kan Estate, she could only hope that the vividness of such sensation would fade with time. Horrible as though she found the action to be, she could not hate or resent those who had carried it out. Nobody was so one-dimensional as to be evil only; this much she knew well. And yet: so many did try to reduce the world to these things, good and evil, treason and loyalty.

She wondered again at the planned visit to the Shintate household. What could be happening to prompt such a thing? Not only that, but it had been ordered as a full-scale slaughter, not a simple investigation. As much as she understood that nobody was fully evil, the Emperor was making it hard for her to maintain that viewpoint, were he truly the sort of person who could order that so suddenly.

She shook her head to clear it of the thoughts and looked about the table once again. It seemed that silence would reign for the moment; not that she minded. It wasn't as though she had anything to say anyway. Her eyes fell to the half-eaten food in front of her, grown long cold. she was itching to be outside again, though she tried not to let this show too much in her demeanor. It must be at least twilight now, if not nighttime proper.

"He plays the piano when he feels dejected about something..." This is a fact that Aimi knew very well. It would appear that Mamoru still has a humane heart within that cruel visage of his. There was still hope for her to believe that all of this would end in a just way. "I believe that haunting tune would be the Moonlight Sonata. It is his mother's favorite piece." She said in a manner of gentle sadness as her eyes gazed at the charm bracelet around her right wrist. The knowledge that Mamoru was eating fine eased her about his health. Before, he finds having meals as a hassle in many ways and decided to have it unless forced to take. "He is in good health that is nice to hear."

A small smile was upon her face as she looked at Nishimura-san that who made humor of himself. "You should eat to your heart's content. Mamoru and Takahiro has their tendency to overwork the people under them. Take this time to relax." Analyzing Nishimura-san's words, she had came to understand the man had been acquainted with the former head of the Murakami Clan. He had been witnessed to the so-called Massacre. "Those two prodigies would not mind when your under my jurisdiction."

Taking a sip from her tea once again, her attention was now upon Namatame-san who was silent throughout the discussion. It came to her mind that her female friend has not yet personally met Mamoru. This was definitely rude for the Lady's part. "Namatame-san, I apologize for making you out of place due to the topic of conversation. In any case, would I expect your companionship tomorrow about my visit to the Shintate Estate?" Inquiring eyes gazed at the female ronin, Aimi remained composed as she needed to be while waiting for Namatame-san's answer. "If you could not, I would understand if you would rather stay here." She offered a kind smile that reflected the kindness upon the Lady Edo's countenance. It would appear that the tension had been lifted and she was thankful for that. A conversation that lingered in warmth would not harm anyone once in a while.

"I had almost forgotten Nishimura-san, after dinner let a maid escort you to the room you would be staying for the remainder of your mission." Directing her raven-colored eyes to the advocate of Murakami. Aimi shown the proper way to be hospitable and none could critic her about it. "If there are any other questions that bother you, let me answer it to the best of my ability." She spoke with such sophistication as she looked at the current occupants of the dining hall.

Gin had remained silent until now yet she knew the man was clearly listening in every word that was being spoken. It had been the nature of her so-called guardian in the many years he was beside her. This made Aimi certain that he was always well informed in any event at times she believed to be more knowledgeable than her. In which, she finds it quite detestable when she had always wanted to be ahead of anyone. This had been her personality since the time she had worked hard to be recognized more than a decorative daughter of the Edo clan. "Gin, have you sent a message to Mikoto-neesan about the ceremony for uncle?"

Meeting the eyes of his mistress, he gave an elegant nod. "I have sent a courier earlier my Lady. I expect a reply tomorrow from the Fukuda Household." Aimi did not need to say anything else as her silence was the way how she ended the conversation. Gin had always proven himself to be efficient. She truly wondered how a man like him suddenly appeared on her doorsteps. However, it was the past that Gin never revealed to her even now and she was the kind to never pry when there was no need to do so. The Lady Edo spoke once again to her companions for the night meal. "I hoped that you had enjoyed the meal despite the many tribulations we had earlier."

Shizuka's head snapped up abruptly; it appeared she had been drifting further afield than she had initially suspected, and of course Edo-san was bound to notice this. there were only four people in the room presently, after all. She recovered quickly enough to regain the presence of mind to shake her head. "Do not alter the conversation on my account." It seemed that getting news of this Mamoru person was important to Edo-san, and she would not demand that they speak of something she understood.

As to the matter of the Shintate... "I would accompany you, if this is permissible." Shizuka couldn't say how, but were it possible she could in some way stop this from becoming the purge it was intended to be, she wanted to go. It was certainly much better to make the attempt than to fail tot do so, and besides that, she was not sure she could take a day behind walls, however permeable they might be in appearance.

Edo-san spoke to Gin-san for a while about a ceremony of some sort; Shizuka guessed that it must be a funeral. What other ceremonies were being held these days? It was hardly the ideal climate for things such as weddings or idle celebrations. Not while the country teetered on the brink of war. Having traveled up and down the country, Shizuka knew what the people of Japan knew, and she understood well that they were making an effort to keep their heads down these days, if not in the sand entirely. It was troubling, to say the least, that they lived in so much fear of being called treasonous or disloyal. People spoke carefully, guarded their hearts, even as the four in the room were doing now.

For surely, though most of the tension was gone, this was still happening. Shizuka knew little of the situation, but she doubted that Nishimura-san was here to simply assist Edo-san, and she doubted also that Edo-san believed this. Gin-san almost certainly did not, but nobody was about to say any of this out loud. Shizuka herself was not in the clear with regards to this, she too could have said things that she chose not to. There were few things she would not tell if asked, but steering people away from the questions which she was uncomfortable confronting was not unnatural to her. It was a survival mechanism for the overly forthright, nothing more and nothing less.

#, as written by Sicroth
Nishimura stayed quiet throughout the rest of the meal, rising to his feet as he finished what he considered his share of the meal; and it wasn't that much. "I thank you, Lady Edo."

Ren spoke it quietly before he rose to his feet, bowing to the leader of the Edo. Eyes of green peered to Shizuka, the Ghost's head tilting to the left as he looked her over - regarding her with a simple nod. "I do ask that I accompany you along this trip as well, Lady Edo, if merely for Shizuka." He peered back to Aimi, his tone almost sounded as if he were really going to allow a choice in the matter. He could of easily followed behind them unseen, unheard, when they departed. Unless... No, they'd probably go by vehicle. Inconvenient.

"If you will excuse me, I think I will... find that room now. And, Namatame-san, I expect to see you later." Ren peered to the youngest of that gathering, before he turned and departed the room; waiting not for the confirmation for his request. Silently he'd slip from that room of the estate, a hand rising to grip his right shoulder tight as he departed - peering about for one of the maids that Lady Edo had mentioned earlier for him to follow. Could he of asked one who waited behind him in that room? Sure, but then he'd had to of stayed longer; and that shoulder was bothering him.

“Do not worry about my concealment. I’ve spent most of my life hiding, it is second nature to me.” He assured Ryuu. “However… I feel I must risk being sighted. I must see this ‘Lady’ Edo with my own eyes before I believe it.” He gave a bow to them both in turn.

“But before I leave, I sense a great deal of distrust towards me from you.” The statement was directed at Sakura. “I pledge that I will do all in my power to prove to you that I can be trusted, and I do not care how much you dislike me or feel I have done my old clan wrong, my loyalty is like no other and I give it only to those who deserve it. I hope you hear me when I say, despite the time gap between the offer and the acceptance being short, that it was thought out thoroughly.” He gave a second bow to her before leaving.

Upon leaving the room he decided that he would get some fresh air. He made it outside and sat on the grass a small distance from the main building. The magpie perched defiantly upon his helmet still and Daisuke was left only with his thoughts for the time being.

Shizuka lingered for a while after Nishimura-san departed, waiting to see of Edo-san perhaps had more to say on the subject of the next day's meeting. The woman seemed largely wrapped up in her own thoughts, however, and neither spoke further. Rather than stay longer than might be polite, then, Shizuka too took her leave, bowing respectfully before exiting, book still in hand.

She was of a mind to finish it tonight, she decided. There would likely not be so much time for such things in the coming days. Why she had this thought, she could not say; she knew only that she was almost certain of it. The ronin was not one to question such things overmuch; she had been taught to trust herself and her instincts.

A slight breeze kicked up, and she realized once it hit the nape of her neck that it was a fair deal cooler than it had been that afternoon, an effect of the earlier rain, perhaps. It was strange, to think that she would not be sleeping amongst the trees tonight. She had grown so accustomed to it that it might be strange to be surrounded with four walls and a ceiling once more. She made her way back to the sakura tree she'd been at earlier, intent on returning to the peacefulness she had felt beneath its boughs. The selfsame light wind was causing some of the petals to fall, and fr a moment she just watched, in silence and complete stillness. The fragrance carried on the air was sweet, and she inhaled of it deeply before sitting against the trunk once more.

It probably wasn't the best idea for her eyes to read by naught but the lights provided by the moon and stars, but she had little regard for such concerns. The occasional stray pink petal would land on the pages, but these she brushed away gently without any perturbation. She recalled that Nishimura-san had mentioned wanting to speak with her, but she was certain that she would not be difficult to find, even as far out on the grounds as she was here. He did seem to have a knack for such things, after all, and if Edo-san should need her for something, Yamada-san would have a fair idea of her location.

A contented smile settled onto her face subconsciously, and Shizuka let her awareness of the world around her fall into the background.

Being the young at heart that Sakura still was, she almost burst out laughing. But, taking a page from Tachibana-kun's book, she chose to hold it in. However, she needed to look away from Daisuke for that to work. The magpie was so damned proud of itself as it sat up on his head like that. It was comical in a way that Sakura wanted to tear up with bellowing laughter. Her mother certainly would have in a situation like this. Tousan would have just shook his head and chuckled about it later. But the man was sincere in his words as he spoke to her and she couldn't help but really hear what he was saying. All she could really think about was what Ryuu-kun... Tachibana-kun had told her. If Tachibana saw something in him, she had to give him a chance, and so she would.

Nodding to them both, she didn't watch as they left her.

She had a lot to think about. Her conversation with Tachibana-kun. The things that she'd said and the reactions he had to her. Everything there was twisted and weird. But those thoughts were better left for later. Now she had to think about her own misfortune to meet a clan leader of the Neo-Shinsengumi. Who in the hell had told them they were traitors? One visit with the Amano clan did not make them traitors, did it? Had there been a mole in his clan? Or was there a mole in her clan? Perhaps the Emperor was doing this just to keep everyone on their toes? What a bastard! Nothing was making sense in her mind. Thoughts were jumbled and fighting over each other, screaming to get to the forefront of her mind.

"UGH!" Sakura growled and threw herself onto the floor, laying all sprawled out and staring at the ceiling. Her feet were getting a nice breeze from outside and it traveled up her legs, stopping at her stomach. It was soothing and she closed her eyes. If only everything were like a simple breeze. Calm, cool, a welcome solace to a moment of torment.

Ryuu was like that.

"OH MY GOD!" Sakura shot back up and punched the wall, putting a little dent in the thin wood trim. A splinter entered her skin and she cursed loudly again. This meeting was going to be awful, Sakura could feel it in her bones. She couldn't keep her mind on any one thing right now. It was frustrating and irritating and so horribly depressing! Sucking at the place on her knuckles, she tried to work the splinter out and think about Lady Edo. Sakura would have to match her in most everything. Poise, grace, intelligence... Oh shit, she was screwed.

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

I am back and I am sorry about my sudden disappearance. I had a lot of problems to deal with but, I am pretty much back on track now. Sorry for the trouble

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Sigh... so I tried to contact all of them. Sicroth replied; I guess he's hoping the GM comes back before he does anything else. The other two messages are still sitting there in my Outbox, which means Misdemeanor and Butterfly haven't even logged on to receive them since I sent them, so... yeah. I'm thinking this is sorta dead. =(

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

It was the first political RP I'd ever been in... And that counts for a lot for me. YOU GET 'EM KIKU!

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Hmm... since our GM has been MIA for almost the entire duration of the RP, I guess I'll send out PMs to the three people that we're missing and ask them if they plan on coming back. I don't want to see this thing die, but since none of us have a way to create or approve new characters, if we don't get the old ones back, we're kinda screwed.

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

i'm still here but one of my chas is in jail and my other is waiting for for lady edo so i have been watching and waiting

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

It certainly does, Derotzka, but I don't think that even Sakura, Ryuu, Daisuke, Shizuka, and Namatame (who I'm waiting to bring in at some point) could run the thing, since none of them are technically Neo-Shinsengumi or anything...

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

I'm still here if that counts for anything. :P

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Yeah... I was just thinking that. Sakura and Ryuu can't make this rp with themselves.... :(

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Is anyone besides Yumiko and I still out there? Hello...?

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

I super suck, I know! The trip wore me out and when I got back on here, I couldn't think of anything (and I mean ANYTHING) to write for Sakura. I've been mulling some stuff around in my head and I should have something posted up by tomorrow (wednesday) ASAP. I hate it when people take forever to post and I haven't posted in FOREVER.

I suck.

Sorry. T_T

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Hey dudes and dudettes, I'm gonna be offa here for the weekend. Gotta trip I'm going on and I'm going to be watching Broadway shows and shopping a LOT, so I won't have time to do the internet thing! I will be back Tuesday night and will check on things then!!! YAY

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

So its been a while... and Kiku, I cannot remember Ryuu's last post, so that I might respond to it! AAH!!! Would you mind PMing the post? If you still have it... if not, please summarize what in the hell happened because I can only remember vague bits and pieces. :/

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

The wonderful world of Magpies..

Gogo.

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

I dunno. it could work. They seem to be recruiting these days...

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Nah he planned to just walk up to the gates.

...Maybe he should replan that.

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Well, are you staying hidden or going in undercover or something else? Because Gin's still out on patrol at this point...

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

I return! Another chance to carve your skulls!

Anyhow... Not sure exactly how Ren should show up at the Edo-estate.

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Had to edit my last post. I hated the ending... It made Sakura even crazier than I actually want her to be. O_o.... She's pretty nuts as it is anyway.
