{ Setting }
Northern Maine, a small, quiet campus on the banks of a deep, cold, and diminutive bay with sandy beaches and deep blue capped crystal waves.

{ Time of Start }
Two weeks after ten monsters mysteriously awaken to full powers and a full monstershape within their grasp. Late summer, when the light is long and red and the trees' leaves fall in heavy fired carpets across the campus on the eve of a new school year at Dorothea Dix University. The welcoming meet and greet the night before school's start, a raging party or silly little get together or smoke circle out back, depending on which part of campus you choose to inhabit during the festivities. The magic users are on guard about news of the monsters' identities getting out, the monsters are finally getting to socialize with people besides the four magic users who quickly stole them away, confusingly to most, for their own safety. The humans who are aware are on high alert; they don't know who the monsters are, not by face or name, just that some of the humans at this party are hardly that, and perhaps there are some humans unaware, easy prey if something were to go awry.

Years ago, centuries, monsters walked with humankind and humans told ceaseless stories of their deeds, good and bad. Like humans, some families, some types were stronger, and some were smarter, while others fell by the wayside. The most important thing, though, was that they coexisted with humans; those who had human blood in their lines could humanshape; take on a human appearance no matter their monstrous one, while full blooded monsters over time slowly receded to forests and deserts, became known as old gods and ancient spirits, reminders of a bygone age and unharnessed powers. Slowly, though, the pure monsters and nonhumans of old dwindled, the purest bloodlines dying untouched or disappearing into the mix of human and monster. Even those monsters who had human blood were hunted to extinction, and disappeared into the wind after too long.
For centuries, the only whispers of magic, of nonhuman flickers amongst the human population that held any weight were witches and wizards, and even they were rare, one to a town in most cases and stretched weak and thin in blood. But those with the gift of foretelling have known 2012 would begin something big for almost as long as the nonhuman monsters have been gone. Humans forgot, for the most part, and began to disbelieve even witches by the time 2012 rolled around, though. It was, perhaps their mistake that they did this.
In 2012, ten monsters awake, each in their early adulthood, each from centuries dead lines of monster blood mixed with human blood; most unaware of their lineage. For whatever reason their thin, ancient bloodlines magnified, sharpened, and they awoke, fully powered, ready to go, and more confused than they'd ever been in their entire lives. They were normal humans; untrained in combat or self defense and moreso in the history of magic and monsters.
Magic using humans, four witches and wizards, are thankfully the first to reach these nine monsters, and end up setting them up in a small dorm off the only remaining university left in the world that accepts and teaches magic using students as well as fully normal human ones. Although the monsters do not have to attend classes, they must do their best to blend in with the student populace and keep their heads down while the witches and wizards explain to them their histories, and do their best to keep them safe from the forces all too interested in acquiring some of the first true monsters in centuries.
Some of these are the six humans who also live on campus and upon learning about the monsters immediately take action into their own hands and begin a small monster and witch hunting coalition which meets in one of the student lounges; their objective is simple, rid the earth of monsters once more, or at least harness them to do their bidding so that the witches might not use their power to once more become a prevalent world power as legends say they once were long ago.
So thus begins the struggle of all three sides in this miniature brewing storm cloud of a war.

Dorothea Dix University is the single remaining institution which will teach humans and human magic users side by side. It's right off the coast and sits on a large campus spanning nearly forty acres, five dorms, and a long stretch of beach. It's the star jewel of Maine's magic community and is the home of our story.
Of the five dorms, there are two female, two male, and one co-ed dorm, and they're all done in the style of the rest of the buildings on campus as well. Magic users and humans intermingle in all classes except for specific magic-based classes, and all students are between the ages of seventeen and thirty-some, each must have graduated high school and been reputable enough to be accepted into one of the most famous schools in known witching history.
While nothing is segregated, the human populace still tends to be wary of the magical one, and moreso of the teachers who are magical as well. About twenty-five percent of the populace are witches while the rest are entirely human, and it's widely believed (as per recent study) that witches are quite technically humans with incredibly diluted monster bloodlines; this makes them even more terrifying.

{ Monsters }
Monsters are a wide variety of creatures; everything from selkies to sirens to werewolves and unicorns. No monsters are left fully blooded, and any monster with a drop of human blood can humanshape, or take a human or near-human form on will. Monsters can breed with humans, but not with a monster outside of their own species.
The monsters we focus on in our story are ten young adults who awaken to monsterhood; unusual for the monsters of old and besides, no monsters have existed for centuries. It's uncertain what percentage monster blood they do have but it's more than likely they had some previous to their awakening. That being said, they are much more potently monster than thinblooded monsters of old.
The abilities of a monster depend very much on their species, as do almost all attributes and differences from humanity, but many monsters are very good at both evasion of attention and most will either have an extreme fondness for humans or an extreme disdain for them (although in species like unicorns this only manifests for certain humans; virgins for unicorns, children or expecting mothers, etc etc etc). They also tend to be somewhat more versatile and adaptable than humans do.

{ Magic-Users }
It's well accepted that magic users (witches, wizards, warlocks, really it doesn't matter what you call them) are the last remnants of the thinblooded lines of monsters' descendants that have lost all but the slightest edge of magic to their lineage and extensive breeding with humans. Magic blood is hereditary and while there are usually no more than two or three witches to every small town and five or so in every city, they do congregate around witching schools and other extraordinary places.
A witch's blood depends greatly on their monster bloodline; if they were born from kelpie bloodlines, they'd have water-based magic and temptations, while roc or thunderbird lines would profer flight and strength, wind. It's not unusual that they bond with others of the same monster bloodline, although it's also not unheard of that they make friends outside these ties. Families, however, do not mix bloodlines very often. Wizard prophets have been awaiting the return of monsters for years; they think it signifies another chance at power over humans once more where they're now discriminated against.

While I'm going to keep rules lenient, I expect respect in out of character relations no matter what.

I expect at least four hundred words per post, although fluctuation is acceptable.

Swearing and graphic content is permitted within the rules of the site, although if anything breaks the rules of public on the site, I encourage you to take it to PM if you still wish to play it out.

Be aware of the previous poster's length and who is working on a post at the same time as you.

God modding (even minimalistic control of another character which is neither NPC nor present in a post which you wrote collaboratively) will be grounds for removal from the roleplay.

If you are confused, please ask questions, don't assume any detail of the roleplay unless you've already asked.

You may control up to three characters. They cannot all be female or male. If you have two characters they cannot both be female.

Face claims may be changed with good reason so long as a gif suitable for the main page can be found, although I will not likely agree to face claim switches of PoC face claims to white ones.

To reserve a character you must submit the password along with which character you would like and a brief description of how you'll be playing that character/what that character will be like.

If you wish to reserve and play a character but no roles are open, I encourage you to speak to me privately and I'll find you a role.
