"Dad are you down here?" Maddie asked pulling her brother a little further into the basement.
While Matthew recognized the reason they had to journey into the basement but still wished there were another way. It was moments like these that reminded him how glad he was that he had a twin. "Dad if you can hear me and you haven't been possessed or turned into some undead abomination and we aren't in a comedy, which I seriously doubt, we're over here."

As they ascended the stairs Madeline shot her twin a questioning look that was met with a mouthed 'later'. The two now had an agreement that neither would inform John of the paranormal experiences they'd had until they had a reasonable amount of evidence and Matthew was mostly sure that he hadn't been possessed or replaced by whatever entity or entities had been tormenting them. "What were you doing down there?"

"I was actually in the backyard." Matthew said. "Until I saw-"
"- a snake." His sister finished for him. "And of course he freaked out and ran inside."
Matthew disliked keeping secrets but he wouldn't be of use to anyone if he were locked up in an asylum. "After Maddie came back we went looking for you. By the way did you happen to 'imagine'," the word imagine was put in air-quotes behind his back, "an odd displacement in the air, the bending of light in an way other than normal, or any foreign-seeming thoughts or sounds?"

"Well enough. What about you?" Maddie answered their father's question after he joined them. She was confidant in her ability to answer was for both herself and Mattie, firstly because they were nearly always aware of each other's current mood, and secondly because Matthew was almost perpetually in a state of barely suppressed anxiety.
Suddenly a loud crash came from upstairs. In response both leaped to their feet and ran up the stairs. "What was that?" Matthew asked as they ran. "Your data."

"What's so funny?" Matthew asked seeing nothing even slightly amusing about the situation.

"Well I guess that explains it." Madeline said. "Problem solved."
Matthew's expression turned to one of mild exasperation. "Oh, really? This doesn't seem at all familiar or suspicious to you? If that is a the case I will ask you to consider for a moment the fact that the phenomena we experienced occurred outside. Granted, the thing in the backyard could have been caused by it since I was standing right next to the basement door, but that first event? I think not. It's probably trying to lull us into a false sense of security."
"Good point." Maddie admitted grudgingly. "So what do you suggest we do?
"For now we go to bed and hope that this particular being, unlike most, has some respect for people who are trying to sleep. Tomorrow maybe we can get dad to take us to the local library. Also we can unpack our ouija board."
"Sounds like a plan." she said giving him a hug goodnight and starting upstairs. "Night Mattie."
"Goodnight Maddie." he answered, also heading upstairs.

Madeline however was a heavy sleeper and her response to the noise was to roll onto her side and continue sleeping.

Meanwhile Madeline continued to sleep peacefully.

But he also knew that this family was part of it. Oh yes, these were the ones. And he could not let them go easily for that.

Meanwhile in the adjacent bedroom Madeline continued her sleep uninterrupted. Likely being the only person in the house who was going to have a good night's sleep.

Matthew, being an extremely light sleeper in addition to being an insomniac, he and his sister theorized that these things were caused by anxiety, woke up at the sound. Unwillingly he stood up, walked over to the door, and opened it. He surveyed the situation in silence for a minute before asking "Dad, what are you doing on the floor?" In his personal opinion it was to early for this.
