Introduction

"The cases were few at first. Every so often a trainer would run into a Pokemon Center, clutching their deceased Pokemon in their arms. Nurses were baffled. It was very rare that a Pokemon would die through battling. There were cases of course, of elderly Pokemon fainting and not waking up, or poisoning becoming too bad and causing death. These cases however were different. These Pokemon were perfectly healthy. There was no reason they would've been killed simply by battling. "

"Professors have made it clear throughout the years that Pokemon moves are inherently non-lethal. Only in extreme circumstances would a Pokemon kill another, and most of these on accident. Even the most powerful Pokemon moves weren't able to kill. Pokemon professors from across the globe were called in to discover why these Pokemon were dying. "

"The conclusion the Professors drew described strange cases in which wild Pokemon were born with powers so amplified that moves that would generally cause fainting left the victim dead. Even through months and months of research the professors could not find any kind of pattern or order behind the births, they just seemed to be random. "

"Many speculated that the problem was connected to the virus Pokerus, but this was quickly disproven. Pokerus was never known to be fatal, and is merely a harmless virus. Conspiracy theorists guess that it could all be the plan of a criminal organization. Nevertheless none of these theories have much evidence to back them up."

"After a year or so, and hundreds of thousands of reported deaths by battles the world started to fall apart. It seemed now that every Pokemon had the capacity to kill. Worried trainers shut themselves inside to protect their friends, while those with more powerful Pokemon took this chance to gain power. The threat of murdering a trainers Pokemon is more than enough of a reason to pay protection money. The sport of pokemon training was no longer a quest given to a child of ten. The only people still training were those willing to commit murder. "

-------------

"Many years later the police force is non-exsistant. It seems the fear of losing a loved one is too great for them to be willing to take the fight to the criminals. Trainers of the past, and regular civilians are now shut into Gyms, hoping that if they were attacked the leaders would be able to keep the criminals at bay. The Pokemon League has shut down. Pokemon are becoming endangered species. Very few roam the wild anymore, they fear for their lives as well. Legendary Pokemon have all but vanished from populated areas. The Kanto Region has gone to hell. "

"All hope seemed to be lost, until Daimon arrived. Daimon promised to keep everyone safe. Daimon promised to stop the murders. Daimon promised no one would ever lose another friend. Daimon was hope."

------------

"Now we come to present day. Daimon Corp has taken all control of Saffron, Celadon, Vermillion, Cerulean, and Fuschia City, as well as all land in between. A wall surrounds the entire area, on which Daimon has stationed soldiers to protect the people inside. Daimon is one of the single most powerful people in Kanto, and his influence is only growing larger each day. Accusations have been thrown of his involvement with the mafia. These people were quickly "asked" to leave the compound and were sent to a newer "experimental" compound in Johto. These people haven't been heard from since."

"Daimon may be a savior to the people of Kanto, and the only one who seems to know how to keep Pokemon alive. But the man is secretive. He never leaves the Daimon buildng in the center of Saffron, and never shows his face to the public. He knows something we dont. He knows why Pokemon have turned into the most powerful and dangerous creatures on the planet, and he knows how to control them. He cannot be trusted, and I believe he is up to something sinister..."

"Kanto is only the beginning. Eventually what happened in Kanto will happen here in Hoenn, and all over the world. Be prepared."

-------------------

Professor Redwood's Lecture ended with that. He realized he must have gotten a bit too traitorous there. His nervous hands were held firmly behind his back as he paced back and forth in his lab. He nodded to his students and gestured to the door. "Thank you for listening ladies and gentlemen. I will see you all again tomorrow." His class filed out slowly. A sigh escaped his lips. It had been a while since he'd told that story. He worried about the people in Kanto, and how they could possibly stay hopeful living in such a hell. He wanted so desperately to save his home, but he was old now. He couldn't adventure like he used to anymore.

A small number of students refused to leave. All with determined looks on their faces. The Prof. raised an eyebrow. "Can I help you all with something?" A young man stood from the middle of the group and spoke.

"Professor, We know who you really are, we know what you did and what you used to be. and we want you to take us to Kanto."

The professor raised an eyebrow once more. They must be confusing him with someone else. But maybe... just maybe...

"Red, We want to help you save your home..."

Professor Redwood had nothing to say, he simply smiled and waved them forward.

"Dio... *cough* Chloe..." Ryan fell to the ground, buffeted by the smoke. He wouldn't be able to keep going for much longer. Climbing out of a collapsing cave was tough enough without carrying an invalid Rya. She hadn't spoken, and had barely moved since Osha saved them. She seemed nearly brain dead, just moving along silently. But the smoke and rubble was too much, and Ryan couldnt see clearly. A crash from above sent a rock torpedoing at his torso. The impact knocked him off his feet, causing him to release Rya's hand. He could feel himself slipping, everything was getting dark. From the rocky floor he dumped two Pokeballs out of his bag. Their only chance was for Chloe and Dio to drag them out. His vision dwindled to nothing as his Typhlosion lifted him into its arms.

----------------

Onix slammed the entrance with its tail, breaking apart the boulders that had blocked it. Brock could see into the cave, but could not see the others. He hopped onto Onix and tapped its head. "Let's go Onix, find those kids!" The Onix roared and dove into the collapsing mess that used to be a tunnel. Brock had to duck down and watch his head so that he wouldn't get decapitated by falling rocks. He grasped the fin attached to Onix's head and scanned the cave for Oak's kids. A small flicker of light shined in the distance. "There!" He outstretched a hand, pointing to the source. It was the flame plume of a Typhlosion. An Ursaring brought up the rear, both of them carrying something in their massive arms. As he got closer to the Pokemon he confirmed the two were Ryan and Rya, but where was Jack?

---------------

Ryan was pulled to consciousness by a voice. "Ryan! Rya! are you alright!" He tried his best to give a nod. His chest was screaming in pain, and he was having trouble breathing. Who was this person? "Ryan! It's Brock!... I'm gonna get you outta here." Ryan was placed onto a rocky platform. He could only assume it was Onix's back. He felt a change in weight as Rya was placed next to him. She wasn't hurt, not that he was aware of anyway. His two Pokemon forcibly returned themselves. Through all of this, all he could think of was whether or not Jack was safe.

The body below him was moving rapidly. All he could see was the ceiling above him whizzing past. The further they went, the brighter the cave became. Ryan closed his eyes once more, his chest was really giving him trouble. He must have broken a rib or something, because breathing caused him extreme pain.

The ride ended shortly afterward, and Ryan was slid onto a much softer surface of dirt and grass. He opened his eyes to see Brock sliding Rya off as well, before hopping back onto Onix. "I'll be right back! gotta go find Jack!" Ryan summoned all of his strength to yell to Brock. "No!" Brock turned back with a quizzical look. The gym leader hopped down and dropped to a knee next to Ryan. "Jack... separated... almost out... safe..." He couldn't speak well, the smoke and pain in his chest was killing him.

Brock nodded. "Alright.. I'll get you guys to Pewter before you know it." He lifted the two back onto Onix and the three set off for Pewter.

Ryan craned his neck back to see the mountain crumbling in on itself. What were they going to do now?

Rya hadn't really been aware of the situation that had just happened. One minute she was happy and now she felt nothing.

It had all been a blur, Ryan had tried his best to get them out but luckily someone else has saved the pair.

It was just like before, they were a pair again and Jack was missing. Though at the time Rya had not realised this, her head was just replaying the last moment before she lost her friend.
She must of returned Zephina at some point because when Brock took the pair back to Pewter she was safely tucked in her Pokeball.

Once they arrived the pair was led to a lightly furnished room.
She sat motionless on the floor. The only action she could bring herself to do was to wipe the blood from her head where she had received a small cut.

Without hesitation Rex withdrew himself from his Pokeball and began to sniff around Rya. He was being delicate, which was odd for him, maybe he already knew what had happened.
Eventually he sat close to Rya. Gradually each member of her team released themselves and surrounded her.

' She saved us...' Was all Rya could manage to say before she began sobbing.
All her friends could do was snuggle in tighter but it was clear they also felt the pain, even Squishy the newcomer.
____

Misty was about to head into the cave when a boy and a Blazikin.
He was clearly hurt but came out guns blazing.

Misty instantly released her Starmie in case they were followed. She could tell this boy was send by Red, he had determination, a quality that was rarely seen any more.

' I don't know who you are. Though I gather Red sent you. Please ask your Pokemon to kindly back down so we can help you. My name is Misty, the leader of Cerulean'.

Jack breathed a sigh of relief when he heard the comforting voice from above him. 'Finally a friend maybe I can go a day without blacking out that'd be nice...' Jack took a deep breath finally having cleared most of the dust from his lungs. "K-ken, back up, she's here to help us, but be ready..." Jack looked towards the source of the voice. He was met with a woman who had clearly been beautiful, but the years of this stressful existence had taken their toll on her beauty. Jack continued up the slope toward the woman. "I'm Jack, one of the students professor Redwood brought here."

As Jack stood to his full height he felt a twinge in his arm. Reaching up to it only caused more pain. "I-I think my arm's broken." He returned Ken to his pokeball deciding to trust this person. Even if he didn't he wouldn't be able to escape and he needed help to get back to Ryan and Rya.

Damon Corp.

"Sir, the explosion went off without a problem. Those kids are as good as dead. Nothing could have survived in the mountain after a blast like that."

Damon spun slowly around to face the Admin. "Good, the fewer people we have digging around the better." He slowly stroked the Skitty laying in his lap. "We need to break the remaining Gym Leaders, I'm tired of this open opposition from them. It is going to end."

"Of course sir, we are trying our best, but the remaining leaders continue to evade our attempts to locate them."

"Then try harder, I'm sick of disappointment." With a dismissive wave of his hand Damon spun his back to the Admin effectively ending their conversation.

The two were dropped in Pewter City in a building they'd not been in before. Ryan was still woozy when Brock told him that he had to go check... something out. Ryan hadn't heard what that something was, but it was the least of his worries. He hit the ground against the nearest wall he could, and Rya grabbed the opposite. He spilled his bag on the tile floor beneath him. Out fell five Pokeballs that promptly popped open and everyone began to look around in a confused manner. A quick once over of his team showed that everyone was ok. It was only now that he realized that some of his Pokemon hadn't met. He gestured with a small smile to his new Pidgeotto. "Guys, meet Leon." He moved his lazy gesture to his newly evolved partners. "And we've got some updates with Dio and Chloe too." The two gave a slight nod to their friends, but were not in a particularly friendly mood.

Across the room Rya sat in a huddle of her Pokemon... and it was easy to tell that something was missing. The poor girl hadn't so much as spoken since they left the cave. It had to be hard, to lose someone you've been with for so long, just like that. He craned his neck, looking up at Dio. If Dio were to die... He didnt think he would have much different of a reaction. Still, what good was he if he didnt try to help. His muscles screamed as he pushed himself to his feet. He quietly limped his way across the room to where his friend was sobbing. Her Pokemon released their tight huddle as he approached, and they were just as upset as she. Ryan said nothing while the her partners parted, allowing him to drop next to Rya. She didn't acknowledge him, just continued to cry into her arms.

Without a word Ryan draped his arm around Rya's shoulders, feeling her dig herself into his chest. Her shoulders bounced with each sob, and he could feel the tears soak through his shirt. He wanted to say something... anything to make it better, but there was nothing. There was nothing that could make this ok... So they just sat there, in this strange unfamiliar room, in this strange unpredictable region, in this strange unforgiving world, for who knows how long.

All the Pokemon had grouped together in the same fashion as Rya and Ryan. It was weird how... human Pokemon could be sometimes. They sat together, comforting each other, and feeling the same loss. All of them together. Just another way that Pokemon were so amazing. It gave him a small inkling of hope... that even in a harsh world like this, and after such a heavy loss they could find comfort in each other.

After what seemed like an eternity Rya's sobs grew quiet. Brock was not back with any information yet, and Ryan had no idea where to go from here, and he was exhausted. He found himself drifting off, his head leaning on hers. Every now and then Rya would make a quiet whimper, but he could tell she wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. He thought it safe to nod of... just for a little bit.

As her pokemon kept close to her Rya kept sobbing. She wondered whether she would ever be able to stop. It didn't seem possible, she couldn't really fathom what had happened but in her mind she kept repeating:

She's dead. She's dead. She's dead

However, this chain was broken when her team dispersed and Ryan embraced her. Rya had not expected it, in all honestly she had forgotten Ryan was there. Burying her head into his chest she began to sob harder. She didn't say a word, just kept crying.
If she stopped crying then she would have to face the situation for what is was...

Eventually Ryan nodded off on her shoulder. The Pokemon snuggled in too but of course there was far too much going on in her mind, preventing her from sleeping.
She looked down at her legs, Tai and Squishy had snuggled in, so she couldn't move. Zephina lay close to Dio. The pair had formed a bond from being the same time.
Rex was also still awake. He just kept staring at her.
' I am sorry Rex. It's my fault she is gone. I couldn't run fast enough.' The small whimpers went back to heavy sobs. That was until Rex placed his head on Rya's other shoulder and began letting out small chuffing noises.
He wanted so deperatley for her to stop crying.

After a while, the chuffing noises acted as a lullaby and Rya began to fall asleep.

Thank God! He was one of the students. At least one of them was safe.
'Are you Ok, Let me help you!'

Taking Jack by his working arm, Misty took his remaining weight, whilst the Doduo sped over to the pair.
She helped Jack on first and then placed herself behind him. There was no use waiting around here. If the attack had been by who she think it was then she had no time to have a battle now.

As the pair made their way back to Cerulean the sun began to set.
' Once we arrive I will have Nurse Joy fix you up and get you a warm meal. AT Cerulean you will be treated as our Guest until you feel well enough to carry on'
Misty could only assume that Brock had not been too friendly. Many of her guests complained about Pewter and the tactics they used on travellers.

Back in Cerulean Misty and Jack were greeted by a small group of people. Two bigger men lifted Jack down and carried him inside.
Of course Joy had been waiting patiently.
'What happened?'She asked.
All the old Gym leader could do was shake her head. At an instant the nurse followed of after Jack.

It was about time that Misty made an important call to her old friend Brock. Hopefully he would have some news regarding the explosion, though she was not thrilled that she had to talk to him again.

The call came into Professor Oak's office rather than Red's PokéGear. Brock must have guessed that he'd be here. Red picked up the phone. "What is it Brock?.... What!? How!? Where are they!?"

Image

Ryan had been awake for about an hour, but he dared not move. Rya was still out, and he didn't think she needed to wake up. He wondered if she was dreaming about Osha. He hoped not. That wouldn't be very pleasant. The Pokémon had fallen asleep as well. They must have been there for a few hours by now... so where was Brock? Shouldn't he be here helping them?

His thoughts were interrupted by a bright, but familiar flash in front of them. Ryan covered his eyes quickly, feeling Rya stir next to him. He slowly lowered his arm only to see a small Pokémon occupying the formerly empty space. All the other Pokémon jumped up, ready for a fight, but Ryan held up a cautionary hand. It was just an Abra, the same Abra that had brought them to Kanto.

Ryan nudged Rya's shoulder. "Rya? I uh... I think we have a problem." She gave a sleepy grumble in response.

Suddenly the Abra began to glow blue, and float in the air. One after the other the other Pokemon returned to their Pokéballs forcefully. The Abra was using Psychic! Rya and Ryan began to float off of the ground. "What the hell?!" The two slowly started floating toward the Abra, until they were mere inches from it. Ryan tried to pull Rya away, but it was no use. The Abra draped it's arm gently across Ryan's shoulder. Everything went white.

----------

The world flooded back into Ryan's view almost as quickly as it had gone. They had teleported again, but to where?

Ryan scanned the room looking for something familiar, which wasn't difficult. Everything was familiar. The desks, the book shelves, the chalkboard.. They were back in Redwood's classroom... In Evergrande City!

His suspicions were confirmed when Red stepped out of his office, hands behind his back, and wearing an apologetic gaze. Ryan sat up, holding a still groggy Rya, and stared in disbelief at the Professor. "Red! What are we doing here? We have to go back, we have to get Jack, we have to..." The Professor held up a hand.

"Go home kids... It's too dangerous." He produced a Pokéball, returned the Abra, and left the room without another word, leaving Ryan lost and confused. After all they'd already been through... Redwood was just gonna pull them out? As if they had failed his class? No. They had to go back. It wasn't over yet.

"Rya! Wake up." He firmly shook her to full consciousness. He would need her help. She finally opened her eyes, and punctuated her nap with a long yawn. "Rya. We have a serious problem.

Rya slept comfortably. In her dreams she was lost with Zephina in the mountain. Every corner the pair turned looked the same. However, Zephina's light was so calm and relaxing and she was warm.

It wasn't until she found herself forcabley floating in the air with Ryan that she began to wake.
'Ryan what's going on I-'
Before she could finish her sentence she was transported back home. Back to the classroom she had studied in. Rya stirred and opened her eyes, Ryan was holding on to her and she brushed him away quickly.

Her first reaction was to cry again but her emotions had a totally different idea, rage had set in.
' Who the hell brought us here!' She scorned until her gaze met the Professor.
He had brought them back after everything. She stormed forward till she was inches from him.
' This best be a joke RED! Yes... you are now Red to me, the name that's hated in Kanto because he gave in! I can see why Brock disliked you so much. You have made us give up at the first hurdle! Did she die in vain! DID OSHA die in vain? Send us back NOW!'

She was shaking in rage. She had lost so much within the last few hours and now it was over. Was he blaming her loss? Was she the reason they were sent back?
' You are a coward! Send me back... Send us back we had so much to do!'

Jack sighed a relieved sigh seeing friendly faces when he arrived in Cerulean City. "What happened?"

Jack rolled off the back of the Dodrio to stand on his feet and tell his story to who he could only assume was Nurse Joy. The looks on the faces of the listening people were shocked. No one could believe that Daemon Corp would go as far as to flow the path through the mountain. After a while Jacks arm was bandaged and he started getting restless. This is when Misty came to him offering some one on one training. Excitedly Jack accepted the offer wanting to further improve himself.

Such went Jack's day training with the old Gym Leader so that he would be able to take on Daemon Corp. This is when he made a promise to himself. "No matter what happens, even if I have to go on alone I will stop Daemon Corp. for what they've done to the Pokemon and my friends. They aren't going to get away from this."

Red stood patiently as she let loose her anger on him. Every word cut like a knife, but his feelings would have to take the toll, if that was the only way to keep them safe. No, it wasn't the Empoleon's death that made him bring them back. Red had already caused enough problems in Kanto before he started to meddle again, and now this Jack boy may have been killed as well. It's not these kids' problem, so why should they give their lives to save it?

Rya had stopped scolding him, and demanded to be sent back. His answer was simple. "No."

He walked past her quietly and shut the door in her face, leaving Ryan and Rya alone together.

-----------------------

Image

The whole exchange took Ryan by surprise. Rya hadn't spoken a word wince the cave, and when she jumped up to stop the Professor he had to admit, it scared him. He could see from here that Rya was holding back tears as she screamed at Redwood. All the grief from Osha's death was being funneled straight at him. Ryan felt a twinge of sorrow for the old man. What could have happened to the mighty Red to bring him to this state?

Rya finished, and Redwood simply told her 'no' and left. Rya stood for a moment, stewing in anger, and hatred, before she just dropped to her knees again. Rya was broken, and there was nothing Ryan could do to fix her.

He stood and approached her. He knew they would have to go back somehow, and he had an idea. He knelt down next to her.

"Rya, were going back tonight. I promise." He gave her a small reassuring smile, then dropped to sit next to her. They would have to bide their time until nightfall but then, then they would have their chance to return to Kanto.

Luckilly Jack had recovered quickly and was ready to begin training. The bet thing that Mist could do was help him to become stronger as she had no idea if his team mates were still alive.
Being as stubborn as she was, Misty had made no contact with Red or Brock to tell them she had Jack in her care. Though Joy had tried to persuade her to get in touch she had decided against it.

Misty had decided only to let Jack battle against Starmie for the time being. It had been the sturdiest pokemon in her team and her first. Not only was she teaching Jack about battling but also about the bond you create with your Pokemon. Misty and Starmie had became fluid, just like water. Both were completely in tune with each other and she wanted very much for Jack to accomplish this with his own team.

In the middle of a rather heated battle the pair were interrupted.
Misty. I know you asked not be disturbed but we have had some news from Pewter. Brock found Jacks comrades and took them to Pewter. He went to check on them a half hour ago and they are gone!'.

Rya could not believe her ears...

NO

He just gave up just like that. She had no other words she just fell to the floor.
It wasn't until Ryan told her they were going back that she popped back into reality.

'Before we go Ryan would you come out side with me?'

She held out her hand for him to take. His hand was warmer than hers, she gave a shudder as thier finger met. She used his weight to lift herself from the floor and lead the way.
The pair ended up outside in the Univeristy courtyard. In the centre there was a large tree.

Rya pulled out a small pocket knife from her small satchel. She had taken it to Kanto for extra protection but it seemed fitting that it was here now to fulfil a new purpose.

' Ryan would you release everyone... I think they all need to be here for this..'

As the sun set Rya began to carve into the tree as the group watched. Her team were huddled together. It seemed like a perfect way to say goodbye.

' Goodbye little Penguin. Be safe...' She murmerd after carving the last digit.
She was crying but this time it was different. She was confident and ready even if she had lost Osha, the Empoleon would never be forgotten.

Ryan silently leaned against Dio while Rya carved the tree. It was odd, He had always been the tallest member of the team, but now Dio and Chloe towered over him. He silently looked over his team. They had grown so much in such a short time. Dio and Chloe just exuded power, much more than they ever had before. The thought of his team getting stronger and stronger... he had to admit, he was excited. They could only get tougher.

They were right back where they started, but things were so different now. There was little left of the ignorance they had when they left. He and Rya knew the how cruel the world truly was. They knew what it was like in Kanto, and that was exactly why they were headed back. They weren't naive anymore. This time they were ready, and this time they wouldn't be under the thumb of some old codger. It was never really Redwood's call. It was always Ryan's. He got the team together. He spoke up to Redwood. He planned this mission. This was his game, and they were gonna play it his way.

Rya finished her ritual and the group stood for a while unmoving. The sun had been set for some time when he finally stepped forward away from his team and put his hand on her shoulder.

"It's time." She turned away from the tree for the first time. She had been crying. Not the misery drenched cry of loss she'd had in the Pokemon Center. This one was her shedding her shell of innocence. She was crying away her doubts and her fears. From now on he knew, this would be a whole new Rya.

"Call everyone back, I've got a plan."

As Ryans hand connected with Rya's shoulder she felt his passion surge through her. She knew what it meant.

Her team stood diligently awaiting their orders. The feelings were mutual for each pokemon there. It was time to go back.

'Let's hear it! If you have a plan Ryan I will be beside you the whole way!'
She took his hand in hers and squeezed tightly. If she had learnt anything from this whole journey it was that Ryan was the best partner anyone could ask for and it was time to prove her worth.

She put her hand into her bag. She dug to the bottom and pulled out a rare candy. It was for Zephina. Rya had been saving it but she knew that if they were going back to Kanto, she needed her strongest team.

All he needed was Constantine. He asked Rya to stay back and wait for him by the tree, and that he would be back soon. He could tell she wasn't pleased with letting him take care of it himself, but all he needed was Constantine.

Night had fallen, and the Professor had gone to sleep. Ryan knew the Professor used to fall asleep in his office when he was busy, and he would definitely have been busy tonight. He gripped the Pokéball tightly and slid the door to the classroom open, moving inside without a sound. If all went according to plan, this would be an easy job.

He dropped the Pokeball to his side, doing his best to cover the light of Constantine's emergence. The salamander Pokémon dropped to the floor, making himself as small as possible. Ryan smiled, he had to admit Constantine was well trained. He leaned down. "Alright bud, it's your moment, make me proud." The Quagsire nodded and slid off toward the Professor's office. Ryan had his own destination.

The Professor had a completed Pokédex. He had to, if he truly was the Pokémon master everyone made him out to be. And if he had a completed dex, he would have to have at least one of every Pokemon in Kanto. Ryan would just have to steal the right one. He slowly made his way to the Professor's desk and took a seat. The man would have his Pokémon stored in the box system, and Ryan was sure he'd be able to get in. He winced as the light from the monitor temporarily blinded him. A password screen... of course. He went to work.

Meanwhile, Constantine had slid into the Professor's office and was keeping close watch on the slumbering Pokémon master. If the Professor showed even a slight chance of awaking Quagsire was to use Yawn and put him back under. So far all was going well, but there was no telling whether or not the man would wake up, and if Ryan could get out in time.

*Rejected*... *Rejected*... *Rejected*...

"Damn..." Ryan whispered. His queses were not working.. "Come on old man... what is it?" A thought entered his head... what if..?

"S-i-l-v-e-r" Ryan whispered as he typed. *Accepted* Ryan had to stifle his celebration, as to not wake up the old man. He quickly found the folder wherein Redwood kept his Pokemon. It would be simple, just choose a Pokémon, and it would materialize into the Pokéball placed on the pedestal. He knew just the one he needed. Ryan placed the empty Pokéball in the slot and searched for the Pokémon he needed. He knew all along just what he wanted, and when he found it quickly started the process. The machinery sprang to life as the Pokémon was being transported, and it was making a bit more noise than Ryan would have liked. He leaned over the desk to see the office door. He hoped Constantine had it under control.

After a few minutes a beep told him it was done. He swiped the Pokéball and left the chair in a rush. He pulled Constantine's ball from his belt and returned him. He'd done well, and they were nearly home free. He slid his way back out of the classroom and jogged down the hallway back to the tree where he'd left Rya. He slid to a halt next to her and produced his new Pokéball.

"Rya, everything went perfectly, It's time we head back." He tossed the ball and let out his new partner. It felt odd having a Pokémon that didn't belong to him, but it was a necessary evil. The two of them were greeted with a sleepy stare by the same Abra that had originally taken them to Pallet Town. Ryan smiled at Abra. "Hey pal, we need your help alright?" He dropped to one knee to speak more comfortably with the Abra. "You up for saving the world?" He held out a hand, and took Rya's hand with the other one. Abra looked hesitant, and he didn't blame it. This whole situation was pretty jarring. He just really hoped Abra would trust him.

Abra finally reached up and and took Ryan's hand, and they were gone.

----------

Ryan knew he'd never get used to that teleporting thing. He could have sworn he'd seen the sun, but that was impossible. There was no sun in Pallet Town, too much smog. A few blinks and there it was. Something was wrong. They weren't in Pallet. He sat up and looked from side to side. All he could see was water. Were they on an island? He spun around and looked behind him. Yup... they were on an island. The giant volcano towering over them pretty much proved that. They were on Cinnabar Island.

When Ryan explained his plan Rya was not happy he was to do it himself but she trusted him.
He left her by the same tree in which she had carved Osha's name.

She had returned all of her Pokemon but she felt this was as good a time as any to release Zephina. She grasped the Pokeball tightly and released the Ponyta into the crisp night air.
It gave a small whinnie and Rya quickly wrapped her arms around the horse, hushing it as she did so.

'Look Zephy, we are going back. We have lost so much but we need to go back... For kanto'
The Pony grunted as if to say she wanted to go back too.
'Now before we left home the first time, Dad gave me this and I want you to have it'

Rya pulled out a rare candy and began to unwrap it. She knew it was time for an adjustment in her team, each pokemon was getting stronger and they couldn't be the best they could be if she didn't start acting like a true trainer.

'I think you know what this does but only take it if you are ready!' She held the candy out in front of the Ponyta, who ate it eagerly.
There was a small flash of light. Rapidash emerged.
It was truly amazing to watch. Rya began to cry and held her team mate.
After a few seconds Rya heard shuffling behind her, Ryan must of been finished so she quickly returned Zephina before readying herself for the journey.

___

The pair were transpoted back to Kanto, alongside the Abra. The air was thick and very different from the last time they 'visited'.
'I am guessing this isn't were we last left off?' Rya asked as she tried to make out her surroundings

Ryan rubbed his head, the sunlight was giving him a headache. His vision was finally adjusted enough to where he could keep his eyes open long enough to figure out what was going on. Rya was nearby, in the same stupor as he was. "I'm guessing this isn't where we last left off?" Ryan nodded silently at the question. They most definitely weren't in Pewter City.

Ryan pushed himself to his knees and sat back on his feet. He could see clearly now, and his eyes locked on the Abra who was sitting quietly in the grass. Ryan produced a Pokéball and brought the Pokémon home. "Thanks bud, glad to have you." He took a moment to look at the ball. Number six. It had taken years, but now his team was full... A twinge of guilt hit him. He hadn't lost anyone so far, and he knew it was coming, but Rya had lost her partner. He didn't know how much that must've hurt. Until he experienced it he would never be able to sympathize with Rya.

He shook his head and stood up for the first time. He took a quick spin to familiarize himself with the surroundings. This was what he knew. They were on an Island. Most likely Cinnabar Island, based on the volcano, but there was no guarantee they ended up in Kanto at all. If they were on Cinnabar, all they would find were ruins. The volcano had decimated the whole island decades ago, and soon afterward the epidemic began. There was no way anyone could've rebuilt the place.

"Well..." He put his hands on his hips and turned to Rya. "Whadda ya think?" He was at a loss here. Time to brainstorm.

Rya looked at her surroundings, it was a rather desolate place surrounded by water. Her mind instantly jumped to the conclusion they were on Cinnibar.
When they were taught about the Island from Red, he had spoken of the Volcano and an old Gym leader who fought with fire. She was actually rather glad they hadn't been transferred to Cerulean to meet with Misty, the water type trainer. Rya wasn't sure she was ready to meet the woman just yet, especially after losing her own water type.

She watched as Ryan pulled a puzzled face. The team was a little stranded now. Since the Island was surrounded by water it would be hard to leave it without a boat or a water type and they only had Constantine.

She put her hand to her head and let out a sigh, they had came to their first hurdle within five minutes of being back.
'It seems like we have hit a dead end. Maybe we should look for a boat or something. I doubt there will be anyone on the Island'

Ryan rubbed his head. She was right, they were probably alone here, and without Osha they would have a hard time getting off. He knew nothing more about Cinnabar than that there used to be a gym here, but that was a long time ago. The old leader, Blaine, was probably long dead by now. They had no help, no way to contact anyone, and no decent way off the island. Hooray.

He racked his brain for anything on Kanto Geography he may have learned in Redwood's class. He recalled a week or so in which the professor had discussed it, but it was very basic and he couldn't recall a whole lot of it. He crossed his arms in frustration and dropped his head. Something caught his eye, and he cursed himself for forgetting about his Pokétch. He tapped a few buttons on the watch, hunting for the "map" function. With a beep a map of the Kanto region appeared, but he couldn't see it. The glare from the sun was blinding. He turned his back to the sun and scanned the map for Cinnabar Island.

It seemed the island was directly south of Pallet Town, and southwest of Fuschia City. The best bet would be to head back to Pewter to speak to Brock. The Ex-leader wasn't a fan of Redwood, so he would help them out. Hopefully...

He clicked off the Pokétch and turned to Rya. "So we're about 2 hours south of Pallet... and double that southwest from Fuschia. We can go either way, but Constantine might not be able to take us to either on his own." He got an idea...

"We should explore a bit. Maybe we'll get some training in." he said with a smirk. "Who knows what on this island."

Rya nodded, exploring the island was probably the best idea. By the looks of things it was pretty desolate but maybe they would be lucky and find something that could help them.

Rya decided now was as good a time as any to release Zephina. It felt befitting that her newly evolved Rapidash should get to see the once great fire island.
She plucked the pokeball from her belt and a bright light shone to reveal the now, much larger horse type.

Placing a hand on Rapidashed back, Rya smiled eagerly. In truth she was glad to be back in Kanto, no matter how desolate. However, the sooner they got off the island and back on track the better.

' If we are exploring, I reckon Zeph will want to help. Do you want to lead the way Ryan?'

Ryan thought about that. "I was actually thinking we split up," He craned his neck to the volcano looming over them. It sat right in the middle of the island, so it made sense that if they both went around different directions they would eventually come back to each other on the opposite side. "We can go opposite directions around the mountain and meet up on the other side." He could sense some resistance from Rya on this. "I just want to cover more ground, and get outta here as soon as we can."

Split up....
Rya gulped a little. Though she understood why Ryan had suggested it, she was a little hesitant to agree.
' Okay. I suppose that's as good a plan as any.'

Zephina lowered herself down so that Rya could climb on top of her.
' Though I think I might get to the other side before you at this rate'

He hadn't realized she'd evolved Zeph... She was magnificent. He stepped forward to run his hand along the Rapidash's firey mane. It was probably one of the most beautiful Pokémon he'd ever seen, and Rya looked perfectly at home riding her.

"Rya. She's amazing."

He dropped his hand to his side with a smile. Dio would love to see the new Zephina. He tossed the ball and Dio appeared with a bright roar. After a bit of confusion, Dio focused on Zeph. He approached her slowly and eyed her carefully. After a short stare down Ryan could see what he assumed to be a smile cross the Typhlosion's face before he sent a ball of fire into the sky above the two of them. Zeph answered with the same gestured.

Ryan had to laugh. The partnership between these two was unbeatable. He looked up to Rya and smiled. It was so simple for the Pokémon to connect, people were more difficult. He wondered if he and Rya had the same chemistry. It was possible.

"C'mon Dio, We wouldn't want to lose to them would we?" Dio happily growled in agreement. Ryan hopped on top of Dio. Wasn't as natural of a ride as Zeph, but it worked. "See ya on the other side. Dio took a few steps forward, but Ryan had him stop for a bit. Without turning back to Rya he spoke, "Be careful." It'd probably be a while before they met up on the opposite side. He knew she didn't need a reminder to be safe, but saying it made him feel better. If only just a little bit.

He kicked his heels and Dio sauntered off around the west side of the mountain.

Dio and Zephina were almost in perfect sync together. It was nice that both teams could connect so well.
As Ryan set off on the back of Dio one way, Rya kicked her heel softly into Zephina's side and the pair headed along the opposite side of the island.

It was somewhat odd riding on top Of Zeph now, she was a lot higher from the ground than before, which took a little getting used to. Luckilly the Horse Pokemon could sense a little of Rya's apprehension and took things smoothly to begin with.

Rya imagined that this island was once truly beautiful, it was a shame to see how desolate it had become. Though she couldn't complain, riding on the back of her newly evolved Rapidash certainly made the journey sweeter.

As the pair galloped through darkened terrain, the smell of old ashes clogged the air. Zephina had been riding for a good 40 minutes or so, it was probably a good time to take a rest and let the remainder of the team stretch their legs. Rya knew full well that Squishy would enjoy the environment and that Tai was probably missing her attention.
The gallop broke down into a small trot before the pair stopped beside an old unused building.
In it's day it would of most likely been a grand mansion, Rya could tell this from the carved pokemon that lay outside.
Even though the carvings were molded and doused in ash, she could make out that one was a Growlithe and the other was a Vulpix.
She placed her hand on the dog pokemons head and pushed aside the dust. Her will to save kanto was growing stronger by the minute, there was beauty here, even under all the smog.

Rapidash began chuffing in the background. Bringing Rya back to reality. It was time to let everyone out.
Three beams of light danced into the air, bringing out her remaining three pokemon.
Rya had forgot how small her team had become. Though they were still strong, it hit her again that Osha was no longer here.

About an hour after they'd separated all Ryan could see was the mountain looming over and the dusty ruins of the island. Dio seemed to feel quite at home among the ash and volcanic rock. Every now and then he would shove his face into piles of ash and giddily blow it away into a cloud. Sure it was fun for Dio, but the clouds of ash had painted Ryan grayer and grayer as the trek went on. After a while he could hardly breathe anymore, so he let out Constantine to give him a little misting every now and then.

This was unwise. You never quite realize how hot it is until you get wet. It only makes the sun shine brighter and harder. After a little while Ryan knew he needed to get out of the sun. Sunburn was the least of his problems, but he still didn't want to put up with it.

He had been sticking close to the mountain. He could still see the ocean to the west, but north and south was just the mountain. Eventually he found a small inlet in the mountain and slid in there to take refuge from the blistering sun. Dio leaned down and bounced Ryan off onto the rocks below, where he proceeded to have a seat against one of the walls. He lazily tossed out the rest of his team, they were probably getting pretty antsy. Constantine instantly waddled over to take the seat next to Ryan, as per usual. Chloe and Hector sat together as normal, though Hector looked displeased that Chloe could no longer lie on top of him. As she was about 7 feet tall now, this was no longer a possibility.

Leon had not had a wealth of time to get to know the rest of the team, but for now he was pecking curiously at Mancini's head. Mancini, ever the oblivious one, didn't seem to mind, so Ryan let it go and took a look around the cave.

He hadn't noticed at first, but the walls were strangely smooth for a cave like this, though he attributed that to cooling lava. It just seemed... artificial. They were just inside the cave, and it went much deeper it seemed, but past this point was pitch black.

Ryan was not eager to explore another cave at all. After the Mt. Moon incident, caves were a touchy subject. Unfortunately, after twenty minutes of staring at nothing curiosity got the best of him. He shook his head and pulled himself to his feet. "C'mon guys, we're going spelunking." With a few quick flashes everyone was back in their balls, save Chloe, Dio, and Constantine. It wasn't safe for Leon, and Mancini and Hector were just too slow. He needed Dio to light the way, and Constantine would be extremely helpful if they were attacked inside a volcano. Chloe just didn't want to go back home.

So they carried on, exploring this unknown volcano cave.

The group took a small rest.
Rya handed out some Poffins that she had spare. The sight of berries was rare in Kanto and she doubted there would be any on the island.

After a small break, Rya returned Squishy and Rex, who surprisingly were beginning to get on well.
Tai refused to go back into his pokeball and took pride position around Rya's neck.
Zephina bend down to allow her owner to get on her.
' You truly are beautiful Zephina.'
Tai let out a loud high pitch whine.
' You are too Tai but let Zephy have her moment'
She petted the small purple monkey that sat keenly on her shoulders.

Before long they were back out on the open terrain. Though Rya really liked Ryan, she had to admit his idea of splitting up was a good one. For the first time in a long time she was beginning to feel different, like a huge weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
Of course Tai brought her back to reality now and again by pulling on her hair.

Rya decided not to approach the mountain that loomed over the island. Instead she stuck to the coastal route. Zephina slowed to a trot when they got close to the ocean. The sea was choppy but still calm enough to travel on.
In the distance Rya could see a small black dot. Curiosity began to strike her as they got closer.

It was nothing like the caves of Mt. Moon at all. The walls were smooth, way smoother than volcanic rock should be. He had to wonder weather or not the cave was artificial, or if was some freak accident that made the cave this way. There was also the smell. Sulfur and ash. It was killing him. If he didn't find some fresh air soon he would surely lose a lung. Glances to Chloe showed that she was feeling the same way. In contrast, Dio was completely in his element. Ryan had never seen it so comfortable with it's surroundings. It was also pitch black, the only light coming from the fire adorning Dio's shoulders. Ryan walked tentatively, close to Dio, and ran his fingertips along the walls. There seemed to be a pattern to the wall, but it was too dark to be sure, even with Dio's light.

All they'd done was travel up, and up, and up... Ryan knew they were no longer facing the direction they'd entered, but the twists and turns of the cave had him completely disoriented. More to the point that it wasn't a natural formation, the path was the same width in its entirety, and did not branch off at all. Just one straight path...

"Roaaarrr!!"

Ryan's head whipped around at Chloe's cry. Had she been attacked? Dio quickly turned to face her just as Ryan made it to her side. Chloe was standing alone, looking no worse for wear. She was fine, she had just run into a rock. Ryan chuckled and patted the giant bears stomach. It's alright Chloe, just a rock.

But that caught his curiosity. For their entire journey not one rock had been out of place. It was a perfect semi circle path since they'd entered. How strange for a lonesome rock to appear just now. "Dio, can ya come here for a sec? With a grunt the Pokémon approached, and as such the area brightened up. The rock Chloe had bumped into was oddly squared. He ran his hand across it. It was very smooth, like glass. Other sides were rougher, but still not like a rock. Not enough light. Ryan turned to Dio. "Can ya pump it up a bit bud?" Dio dipped his head and his neck exploded. Tongues of flames licked the ceiling while Ryan shielded his eyes. He might've overdone it a bit.

But for once he could see clearly what was in front of him. It wasn't a rock. It looked like a screen. He came closer, running his hands down the sides. The thing was about 4 feet tall and rectangular, with a large screen right on top. There didn't seem to be any buttons on the side to turn it on, or any kind of cord to power it, as if there were any power plants around here.

"C'mon ya bastard. Gimme something." He tapped the screen several times, but no dice. "C'mooooonnn" He groaned as he angrily punted the machine. A sharp pain traveled up his leg and he cursed himself. "So stupid"

Suddenly the light got a bit brighter. Ryan looked up from his damaged foot to see a dim light coming out of the screen. "Dio, tone it down bud. The flames fell away and Ryan was left with only the dim screen, which was getting brighter as time went on. He blew the decades of dust from the screen, and could finally make out a few words.

"Yes or No: Caterpie evolves into Metapod."

Ryan raised an eyebrow. What could this be? There were no buttons to give the answer. And he had no idea what would happen when he did answer.

"Yes...?" A loud 'DING' echoed through the cave. Ok. Now what?

Nothing followed the Ding, nothing at all. Nevertheless, filled with questions and confusion Ryan decided to press on. This place was only getting odder and odder. There was no telling what he would run into as he continued on.
