She realized at a young age that she was different than humans when they treated her differently after she told them she was a vampire to close friends. Scar's parents sent her to this school because she was originally going to a human middle school and thought that if they paid for her to go to this fancy vampire school she would finally make some friends. Carter did and became somewhat popular. She hates humans because they don't understand that she is just like them and they all hate vampires for no reason. She has no siblings and her mom was actually a human turned vampire which is why she doesn't drink blood.

Her father served as a very sucessful politician, and was a huge major part of the War of 1812 up until there was an incident of vampyres feeding on humans in their city that mysteriously caused him and his family to fled. Now 202 years old, Mary-Ann lives her life surviving as a blood-thirsty monster with her brother elder brother Thomas Ellington.

"I want answers. I want to know about this place. Why did the man say he could 'smell human' when I came down here earlier? Why are you covering for me? Oh my gosh! You guys are werewolves aren't you!? I just know that you're werewolves! I mean, werewolves are basically dogs and dogs have like super good smelling abilities, so you guys are obviously werewolves. Or maybe you're vampires! What are you? A vampire? A werewolf? A vampwolf? Is a vampwolf even a thing?" Lake started blurting out random questions, to say she was calm was a complete lie. She was anything but calm. Strangers would probably think she belonged in a mental asylum if they saw her right now.
Lake gasped, "So you're a vampire or a vampwolf! I bet you're a vampire! No, a vampwolf! No, I bet you're both! What are you? Are you a vampwolf? A vampire? Both? I figured it out! Your mom is a vampire and your dad is a vampwolf because his mom was a vampire and his dad was a wolf! I'm such a genuis!" she rambled. Lake had a tendency to do that when she was nervous.
"Oh my god, you locked me in here so you could eat me! Wait! That's cannibalism! Wait, is that cannibalism? I mean, I'm a human, and you're a vampire vampwolf hybrid, so is that cannibalism or not?" Lake took a few steps back nervously, and she bumped into the wall, "Please don't eat me. I know plenty of people that you can eat instead. I've been told that I don't taste good anyway, so go eat someone else!"

Thomas closed his eyes and inhaled slowly through his nose, aware that he was gritting his teeth. "Shut.UP." he said calmly.
"Shut doesn't go up, though, shut goes down, so why don't people-well, in your case, vampire, vampwolf hybrids- say shut down?" Lake asked, her tone completely serious.

When Thomas had finally opened his eyes he found himself locking the girl against the wall and his fangs were exposed. "Do you ever shut up?" he sounded infuriated especially by the site of his red eyes.
Lake gulped, and she raised her hand as if she were asking for permission to speak. She had a fearful expression in her eyes, and she spoke, "Can I leave now, please?"
Thomas stared at the girl's expression; afraid and urging to leave for Thomas had no idea he was exposing the monster inside. He had thrust himself away from her, far away, until his back hit the wall. "I think you should. And Lake?" The sound of her name on his tongue had left a tingling sensation.
"How do you know my name?" Lake eyed him suspiciously, "Are you a mind reader? Psychisc? Are vampires capable to reading minds? And don't even say your not a vampire because you have fangs sticking out of your face," she didn't seem afraid anymore, she was fascinated that she was standing in front of a vampire, and she was fascinated that he knew her name, "I have to tell Jared about this! He will totally freak out!" she grinned excitedly.
"NO!" Thomas yelled as he moved in front of Lake at blinding speed and pressed his hand over her mouth. "You can not tell anyone."
Lake bit his hand, making him take his hand off of her mouth, "Why can't I?" she asked him curiously.
"Why can't I?" Thomas pitched his voice higher to mimic Lake's. "Because Lake if you go running your mouth to those mortal up there.-he pointed at the ceiling-"It'll be hell for us immortals down here. That's how the IBA set this whole thing up. The rules state that we are to stay down here unseen, and people like you aren't suppose to know about our kind."
"What kind of shampoo do you use? You're hair is so flawless. Anyway, err should I go since "people like me" shouldn't know about you?" Lake asked him.
"You wouldn't know about me if you would've stayed upstairs." he muttered under his breath, but shook his head. "Yeah, I think you should leave."
Lake grinned, "I'll probably be back, it's fun down here," she went up the stairs, and she closed the door, pushing the rack of books against the door, and she exited the closet.
She walked down the hall, and she spotted Jared by his locker, "Hey Jared," she smiled as she approached him, "I like you too, by the way."

Jared looked at her, his eyes narrowed and he looked tired. "Gee thanks..." He said, shutting his locker door and heading to class.
Mary was waiting until Thomas had returned from chatting with his girlfriend who, in fact, smelled surprisingly delicious in the weirdest way. Thomas entered the classroom, and Mary looked up to see the uneasy look on his face.
"What happened? You look..jittery." she said. Thomas came close, and sat on top of the table with Mary. "Uhh, nothing. She had some things to discuss with me. No problem." He lied. Mary knew he was lying, and it was the smell that intrigued her the most. It was sweet and utterly delectable. Almost like a human.
Mary sniffed in the scent that was coming from Thomas, and her eyes grew large. "She was a human wasn't she?"
Lake frowned slightly, and she mumbled, "Boys are so stupid sometimes," she sighed softly.

All of a sudden there was a loud buzzing sound coming from inside Thomas' head. He covered his ears,"Do you hear that?" Mary just stares at him with the weirdest expression on her face. "Hear what?"
"That scr-" Thomas cried out as the pain grew louder, and the scream that went with it. It didn't take him long to figure out that it was Lake who was screaming, and she was in trouble.
"Thomas!" she hollered out. This made Thomas flash out of the room with great speed; dashing through hallways, rounding corners, and tramping up three flights of stairs until he spotted being her cornered from a pack of vamps who probably sniffed the human aroma off her. He stood guarding Lake in front. "Whoa, I hope you guys aren't doing what I think you're doing," he said to the vamps. "She just smells like that because she fed on a human earlier. How did she do that? I don't know, but she is definitely one of us. Humans up there don't know that vampires exist down below."
Lake blinked, not realizing that he was covering for her, "Thomas, I'm not a vampire... I'm a human, remember?" she said to him as if he were dumb.
Thomas smacked his head, "Wow I had absolutely no idea." he replied sarcastically. "Usually when people save someone from a pack of thirsty blood suckers, they'd at least get a 'thank-you' in return."
"Oh, I didn't realize that you were covering for me," Lake laughed nervously, "Uh, thanks," she smiled, giving him a quick hug before pulling back, "Uh, sorry," she mumbled, looking down at her feet in embarrassment.
Thomas looked at her when she pulled out from the hug. A part of him wished that she hadn't pulled away from him, the other part a little angered that he had now more human scent on him. Thomas opened his mouth to say something, but closed it almost instantly. He looked away from her with his hands shoved deep inside the pockets of his trousers. "You should probably go. They might be looking for you up there."
Lake frowned, "I don't want to go," she mumbled, thinking about Jared. She thought he was mad at her, so she wanted to stay as far from him as possible, so she didn't have to be in his presence. She hated it when Jared was mad at her. Actually, she hated it when he was mad, period. She didn't want him to be mad for any reason at all.
"I'm kind of trying to avoid someone, so I think I'll just explore this academy," she said, gesturing to the hallway and to the other hallways beyond the one they were currently standing in.
