Setting
Ofelia, the dragon trainer, operates her dragon ranch here.
"Thank you so much. Sorry I left so suddenly, I saw people coming into the tavern and realized that I hadn't locked the door. And by that time this little guy was starting to hatch. He's so cute. I'll pay you whatever the cost is for him." He smiled as the little hatchling pushed away the rest of his shell and started to crawl around on the bar. Kel picked him up and cuddled him. The dragon made happy sounding growls and chirping sounds. He set the little guy on the floor and he rubbed up against his legs as Cire came up to him and sniffed him before cuddling up to him as well.
"Awe, look they like each other." He smiled. He then walked over to the other two ladies in the tavern.
"Sorry to freak out on you ladies, I didn't know what to think when I saw you coming in here. It's not just a tavern, I live upstairs so I was just a little freaked out. I normally remember to lock the door, but I guess I was in a hurry. Was there anything else I could get for you?"
Haera chuckled, taking the last swig from her drink. She liked the white tiger. Hadn't seen those in a long time. "Tis alight. Sorry to just barge in. Didn't want this one to freak. She smiled and pointed to the redhead next to her. "I put the money by the register, if it is too little I will give you the rest, too much you can keep it." She said.
Haera looked to the redhead, before going out and seeing what time it was. "Shit. She was going to be in a shit pit. She looked back at Nat. "I lost track of time and it is over... you said you were looking for people? I think I would be safer going out to the ruins than going home right now." She laughed. "Though I am more of a fighter kind of gal."
She shook her head yes. "Yeah... I uhm... just getting the hang of all this. Make yourself at home." Roshia laughed nervously. "You can stay in my room since Cossie went into the guest bedroom. Uhm... just..." She turned looking over everything. She didn't know what to tell him.
Kel woke up to Dribbles licking his face. Dribbles was the name he had chosen for his new baby water dragon.
"Hey there Dribbles, you know you're not going to be able to stay inside all the time, let's take you outside. Cire will keep you busy and protect you from predators." He smiled at the cute baby as he got dressed. He took him downstairs and opened the back door where Cire was waiting for them.
"So according to that book, you like to eat fish and you love to swim. There's a lake down there where you can take care of both those needs." He said as if he was actually listening. "It also said that you will need your own space and plenty of room to play. Well there's plenty of that and lots of love for ya too. I'll keep a big bowl of water for you here by the house too." He filled a large metal wash tub with water and added the powder that Ofelia had given him. "Okay you two go play, I'll check up on you later."
He looked over at Ofelia's ranch to see some of the other hatchlings that had hatched yesterday and saw Zero was still there. "She must have let him stay the night, she's such a sweet girl." he thought to himself. He couldn't help but feel sorry for the guy, having amnesia like that must be hard to deal with. He wished he could do something to help bring his memory back.
"Hey, Zero, you want some company?" He called out to him as he waved from the property line.
Zero was suddenly startled as Kel called over to him and responded, "Oh, Kel! That would be fine by me. I'm just wandering around, both marveling at the dragons and well, trying to remember who exactly I am." As he approached Kel, he asked, "Did you come by just to see me or did you need something?" He hoped he didn't come off as rude to Kel when he was just trying to be nice.
"Well, I looked over here and I saw you, so I guess just to see you." Kel smiled. "I hope that's okay. You just kinda looked lonely. I can't imagine what you must be going through not having your memory and all, but I just kinda thought that it might be nice if you didn't have to go through it alone." Kel blushed a little and looked down at the ground. He couldn't believe he was actually flirting with a guy he had just met yesterday, but then that seemed to be a pattern around this place.
Zero thought this gesture to be thoughtful and shared a small smile of his own as he replied, "Well, I appreciate the effort to do so." He continued, pacing around a bit as he spoke, "You would think living with no memories would be extremely difficult. But really, it's not quite that hard. Of course I always want to relearn what I once knew,
but at least I'm not plagued with worries that I might have been if I had my memories still. It's that thinking that helps make all this bearable." He turned back around and asked, "How is that dragon of yours doing?"
"I don't know, it seems to me that not knowing my previous worries would be a new worry all it's own. Like what did I do that could have trigger a total loss of memory? Did I live a dangerous life, are there people trying to kill me? That sort of thing." Kel suddenly realized that he might be making things worse by saying all this. He took his out when Zero changed the subject to his dragon.
"Oh, Dribbles, that's what I called him, he's over there in the lake with Cire. He is a water dragon so he loves the water and Cire seems to love him too. They love playing together." He was beginning to get comfortable talking around him. "So did you want to try and see if those herbs I was telling you about yesterday might help? I think I still have an old apothecary book in my house."
Akayia awoke and decided to explore around the lake with Sylvia. The two of them enjoying the nature and calm.
Zero watched the dragons with interest before remembering someone was talking to him and snapping back to attention, "Oh sorry, I got lost watching the dragons. If it's not too much trouble, I'd have no problem with trying your herbal remedies, but if it would inconvenience you please don't worry about it." He appreciated how kind everyone on this island was to him so far, he just really hoped he wasn't being a nuisance.
"Pshhh!" Kel scoffed. "It's not an inconvenience, it's what I do for a living. Granted my parents would have rather had me stay in that tiny little village I grew up in, but this place is far better." He took Zero's hand and pulled him to the tavern. They went inside and Kel disappeared behind the bar and began looking through his shelves until he popped back up with a thick book with a leather cover. He began flipping through the pages. "Let's see here, insomnia, anxiety, ... here it is, amnesia and memory problems." He poked the page with a finger before flipping to the correct page. "Here we go, I need ginkgo root, blisterwart, and powdered venom rose. I think I have all this stuff in the back here." He pulled out some jars with the appropriate ingredients. He looked at the directions and began to make the brew. He put the ginkgo and the blisterwart into a mortar and ground them down with the pestal until he had a fine grain powder then he added it to the venom rose powder and put it in an empty fine mesh cheese cloth pouch. He tied it off and put it in a pot of boiling water. After it steeped for a while the brew got very strong and he poured it into a small mug.
"Here ya go. It may not taste that great, but it should help if this book is accurate." He smiled as he handed him the mug.
Zero accepted the concoction and drank it, shuddering a bit at the taste. He stayed quiet for a minute before replying, "I feel like... something is coming back, but I can't quite tell what it is that has returned." He smiled at Kel and nodded as he told him, "Thank you for trying at any rate, truly."
Natilia took a swig " But that's what makes it fun lass the challenge...That and the damn big pot o' gold at the end." Natilia smirked and gave Haera a wink.
"Well it was worth a shot." He shrugged. "Maybe it takes a while to kick in, the instructions weren't all that clear on how long it takes for the effects to happen." He didn't know what else could help, but he was still thrilled to be hanging out with the guy. "But I guess if we can't recover your old memories, that means you have to go out and create new ones. And you can figure out new things about yourself along the way. You'll get to know yourself all over again. You get to find out the things you like, the things you don't, what you think is fun, and ...other things." His voiced cracking slightly on the last part of the statement. "I mean, it would be a rare opportunity that most people wouldn't get in their lives. I would be willing to help with ...any of that for you." He gave a sly grin.
Haera laughed and thought about it. "Well I am up for it. It would be something to do and chasing bounties get boring. Count me in! She ordered another round for the both of them. It was a time to celebrate!
Natilia raised her mug in a toast, "To adventure, gold, and beautiful warrior women!" She said with a smirk and sly wink at Haera before downing her ale.
Zero didn't quite catch the slight implication Kel had launched there, but he nodded at the idea of making new memories and declared, "That's actually a very good idea. No reason for me to wallow in what may or may not have been when I have so many opportunities to replace any sort of life I may have once had." He paced around the room a little bit before explaining, "There is one thing I would really like though Kel, if you wanted to help me. Ever since I've seen one... I've wanted to get a dragon of my own. I've honestly become so fascinated with them, could you maybe help me talk to Ofelia about getting one?"
Kel loved the idea of spending time with Zero, it seemed like a great way to spend the day. "Sure I could talk to her about that. I think she's gone out for the day, though, so it might have to wait till she gets back." He couldn't help but smile, there was just something about him. Maybe it was the mystery, maybe it was how cute he was, or maybe it was the fact that he was the first person to give him any sort of attention since he moved up here. It was nice.
"I do have another idea. Something to do while we're waiting for Ofelia to return. If you would like, I would very much enjoy showing you around the city, if you're up to it. You can use my shower and you can wear any of my clothes in the closet, you look like you're about my size. I can wash what you're wearing for you." Kel tried not to make it obvious that he was imagining Zero in the shower.
Zero thought this was at least an interesting idea if not pleasant, so he agreed, "That sounds quite nice, both the tour and a change of clothes, this outfit has seen better days I'm sure." He chuckled a bit at this and asked, "Are you sure it is no trouble though? You've done so much for me already, I hope I'm not becoming a burden."
"It's cute how oblivious you are." Kel chuckled. "Believe me, if you any kind of a burden, I would have told you by now. I consider this a pleasure; I stand behind this bar every night, listening to the problems of people that I rarely ever see again as they go out on their adventures. Never has any of them ever been concerned about me. But then you show up out of nowhere, with no memory, and in need of help, but you're worried that you're burdening me? It's refreshing that no matter who you were before, you were so selfless that it carried over even when your own memories didn't. That tells me that whoever you used to be was someone worth knowing, and so is the person you are now. So it's a pleasure to know you and to be able to help you in any way I can."
It was Zero's turn to blush a bit, he certainly wasn't expecting such praise as he protested, "Please Kel, I did nothing to deserve such kind words. Thank you for them though." He realized he had a little kink in his shoulder and rolled it before asking, "So, not to rush you at all but could I get those clothes? I'm not picky but I am starting to stink a bit." He laughed at this but he wasn't kidding.
Kel smiled at the sight of Zero blushing. "Sure it's right this way." He lead Zero upstairs. The stairs entered right into Kel's living room and to the back left, from the entrance, was the kitchen and to the left of that was the door to his room. The living room was cozy, it had a small sofa and a fireplace with a couple of bookshelves on either side of the huge window that let in the bright sunlight. The walls were originally a flat white color, but years of using the fireplace had stained them a dingy yellowish color that made the place look lived in. There were small end tables on each side of the sofa with oil lamps to light the room at night. He lead Zero through the living room to the door and let him into his room.
Kel's room was slightly bigger than the living room, but every bit as cozy. There was a big bed against the back wall, with a nightstand on each side with an oil lamp on each and a big dresser against the same wall as the door. There was another huge window on the right of the room, again mostly for light, and on the left of the room were two doors. The one closest to the entrance was the bathroom and the next one was his walk-in closet.
"The bathroom is in here." He said as he opened the door "And in here is a lot of my clothes." He smiled as he opened the door to reveal his huge wardrobe. "All the shirts, jackets and vests are in here, pants, shorts, socks and underwear are in the dresser. Feel free to use whatever you like. There's fresh towels under the sink. So, I guess I'll leave you to it. If you need anything just ask, I'll be in the living room." He told him and walked out into the living room closing the door behind him.
Zero nodded and thanked Kel on his way out, "Thank you very much, I won't be long." He wasted no time in undressing and was relieved to be getting clean again after so long in those clothes. He was done in about 15 minutes and got dressed in a white shirt just a few shades off of his hair colour, with dark pants to contrast. He found Kel and turned a circle with his arms out, asking, "How do I look? Probably not very good because I can tell even in my old life I had no fashion sense." He chuckled a bit at this confession.
