War of Love and Duty

War of Love and Duty

0 INK

After her parents died, the princess has had to take over the kingdom. But now there's so much confusion! ...But why don't you click to find out?

1,551 readers have visited War of Love and Duty since Crystal Flamedance created it.

Introduction

She didn't even have the time to mourn. Her parents died while they were in the middle of yet another war; they needed someone to take charge, and right away. She had never been good at taking charge, especially when it came to war. The princess could only get advice from people she trusted knew what they were talking about; people experienced in different areas. But that's only a portion of the problem.

Her parents seemed to know that, if anything happened, she would have trouble keeping everything straight. So she'd need someone to help her lead. Before they died, they sent for a prince, one experienced enough in war he'd be able to help, and they had hoped he would be a suitor for her. She didn't find out until afterwards, so there was nothing she could do about it. But there is another factor that makes this problem much worse.

Months before her parents had died, a thief was caught trying to steal from the castle. The original sentence was to be stuck in a dungeon, but the princess found it as a way to be helpful for the war; considering he had only been caught because he had someone along that had wanted to help, and only cause trouble for him. She spared him that, but instead, he has to sneak into the enemy kingdoms to gather information for her. At first, she would only report back that information to her parents, but, when they died, she had to figure out how to apply it to whatever she could do about it.

And the factor that makes it worse? She knows the thief likes her, and that he knows she knows. She acts coldly towards him, trying to make sure he knows the only reason she keeps him around is for information; besides, she practically spared his life, he owed her. But that's only a front, and the thief has only a suspicion about it, but she does like him, too.

Where this becomes a bigger problem? The last person from royalty to fall for someone that wasn't from the same class was no longer considered alive to any of the rest of her family; the traditions that royalty have to live up to would never allow it. She doesn't want to be forced to leave; she has a younger sister that she doesn't believe is ready for any of this, and that she needs to be there for her. Which leads her to a very hard choice; the thief she likes so much...and leave her sister to deal with things on her own, or the prince she barely even knows...and leave her own happiness behind?

You can be the thief, the prince, any of the friends that the princess consults, or anyone from another kingdom planning to attack. Any other characters are welcome, provided they will go along well enough with the story.
(The thief and prince have been taken; still looking for other people for her to consult.(Though the prince seems to have disappeared, and my need to be replaced, depending o whether or not he comes back.))

1) No godmodding.

2) Do not just drop out; let me know if you are going to be unable to post, or if something got in the way, or if it's only a temporary leave. Either way, I'll find something for your charcter to be doing while you're gone.

3) Don't make a character and then just leave, and never post. Then you've wasted time making the character, and I've wasted time reading and looking over it.

4) Don't just add abilities as we go on; list them beforehand, and only add new ones if you're character actually took the time to learn them during the course of the rp.

5) Don't tell me you're going to add more later, unless it's you mention that you plan to have the character learn more later on. I don't want any sudden godmoddish surprises.

6) Characters can argue and get into fights...that does not mean that you, as the creators of the characters, are going to fight amongst yourselves. If the fight is in character, keep it there, and not out of character. If there are any disagreements, please talk them out calmly in the OOC, and not start an argument aver it.

7) You may make a character of any race, as long as the characteristics of that race are reasonable. If necessary, I will make an OOC section to list out the characteristics of the races we have, which will be open to discussion as long as none of them start to become close to godmoddish or the vampires turn into the Twilight version of vampires (Vampires should not sparkle! -_-).

8) You may create multiple charatcers, as long as you can keep track of the number of charatcers you make. But I don't want too many characters from the same person; don't dominate the rp with so many characters, please.

9) Romance is allowed, but remember site rules; keep it PG, okay? Same goes for going too far into detail with gory details in a fight.

10) I would like to avoid one-line posts whenever possible. I understand every now and then, but not all the time, please; give the others something to reply to.

11) Try to keep the OOC...in the OOC section. I know, what a concept! But seriously; it can sometimes become hard to read if there are OOC additions to the posts.

12) Keep checking back here every now and then; I may have forgotten something, and will add anything later that I see as necessary. Don't worry; if you do something that I forgot to mention, I will not hold it against you; it's only when you make that mistake after it's been added to the rules.

13) So...that's all I've got for now...so let's get this started, shall we?

Jessamine frowned at the celing, lying back on her bed, thinking. She wished she had known sooner that her parents had sent for a prince. The worst part was, she had no idea when he'd be arriving. She had thought it was bad enough she had to deal with a war but, if everything went the way they had planned it, they should have known better; trying to plan any sort of wedding during a war was trouble. But no; they had to send for a prince to help her out. Wonderful. Just one more problem to deal with. She sat up with a sigh. "Something's going to have to be done..." she mumbled to herself before getting up.

She wandered out of her room, and through the halls. She had no idea what she was going to do. She barely even noticed the people walking past her, whether she knew them or not. But they seemed to notice that she was lost in thought; even a small word of greeting would go ignored, no matter who it came from. ...Well, almost, anyway. There were a few she knew she would actually stop for, but not many. But the fact was, she needed something to distract herself from the war, and the prince. But she had to focus on them! It was only giving her a headache. "What am I supposed to do?" she asked herself, ignoring just about anyone nearby who looked at her strange for talking to herself.

Moonshade was pacing back and forth in one of the halls. It got this way often when she was working on one of her new ideas. She had very odd ways of coming to conclusions. Some of the servants had even seen her dance, alone and with no music, except what she could hear in her head. Her hands were together, fingers entwined, except for her index fingers. Stretched out straight and pressed together, they rested over her lips as she moved to and fro.

"What am I supposed to do?"

The princess' voice reached her ears and dragged her from her thoughts. She watched as she walked past and then followed, easily coming up to walk beside her. For a moment, she simply studied Jessamine's face and then smiled softly. "You are troubled." Was all she said. She never asks, simply waits for the moment that her opinion is requested.

Lucian was in a line up and looked like he had a broom duck taped on to his back. The intructor was yelling at them barking orders like "You better show me respect kid." or "Today you brats are going to practice your swordsmanship." Lucian just stared at the guy. He didn't like the way this guy talked. He was new of course but the old instructor even though he to had yelled at them he had some sort of kindness in his voice. Unlike this dude who showed no hint of positive emotions. When the instructor finally finished his orders he let them go. Lucian was about to take a step when. "Kid!" he heard the instructor yell. Lucian walked up to the instructor with a serious face on. "Yes sir?" he asked. "Today it's your turn to practice defending the halls of the castle. You and an experienced knight will walk the halls making sure if anybody has any trouble." he said. Lucian nodded. The instructor pointed to his left and a knight who he knew as Tanner came walking by. "Hes all yours." the instructor said. With that he left to go watch the other trainees.

_________________________________________________At the castle________________________________________________________________

"Instructor Zoro is not all bad you know." Tanner said as they walked the halls of the castle. He greeted each person as if they were family and asked if they found anything wrong.
"Yeah and only if that was true."Lucian said in a bitter tone. He took mental notes on what to do and checked his surroundings just in case they could be in an important use someday.
"The guy doesn't even seem he wants to be here." Lucian said.
"Yeah true but he is. When he was hired he told us his past and how his instructor was too soft and they lost half their men during a war. " Tanner said. He continued telling Lucian about the instructor. Which he was paying no attention to. He heard people talking around the corner. Which seemed weird because so far everybody seemed to talk to themselves. He couldn't help but to leave Tanner talking to himself and find out what they were talking about. He saw two girls talking to each other one of course he knew as the princess. The other he didn't know so much. He quickly hid behind the closet curtain he could find so he could eavesdrop.

Dahlia left her sister earlier that morning so she could think, apparently this suitor nonsense got to her more than she realized. Who knew though the prince they were sending could be perfectly lovely! She could only imagine though..forced to marry someone you didn't even know! Looking up she hurriedly skittered along beside a maid she had been following for the day since she couldn't be with her sister. Her mind stayed on her elder sibling though and how she was doing now, maybe she's made peace with a suitor coming? She slipped away spotting her sister and the alchemist speaking, smiling she readied to come into the group when she spotted a young man slipping behind a curtain. Now what in the world was he getting up to? Tip toeing she made her way slipping in on the opposite side of the curtain eyeing him. Speaking in a whisper she addressed him "What exactly are you doing behind here?" She peaked out from behind the curtain then popped her head back in. "Not spying are we?" She smirked at him waiting for his answer.

Jessamine glanced at her, but continued walking. Not to say she wasn't ignoring her; she much preferred to walk while she was talking. "I just thought this was hard enough; trying to take over on my own...that didn't mean my parents had to find a suitor," she said; that seemed to be bothering her the most lately. She had one thing to deal with; wasn't that enough? Why did a suitor have to be thrown in on top of that? Besides, that thief...she shook her head, trying to shake the thought off. "...I just think my parents could have done something more useful than sending a suitor...fixing up an arranged marriage...but I have no idea when he's supposed to get here...and that bothers me." She should at least have a general idea...but no. She didn't even know where he was coming from!

She smiled softly as she listened. Although she had no clue what the princess was going through, she could imagine being forced to marry someone whom you had no knowledge of. Not a pleasant thought for any woman in her opinion. "I'm sure that your parents had your best interest at heart." She assured her. While she was certain that was true, she entirely disagreed with the path they took. "You are strong, Princess. Things might seem difficult now but I have faith in your ability to persevere. When this suitor arrives, we shall see if he is truly deserving of you. Whatever path you choose to take from there, I shall stand by your decision." Plucking a small purple flower from her hair, she took in the sweet honey like smell. "Now, How about some tea?"

Lucian jumped in surprise when a girl he known as the sister of the princess asked him what he was doing. "Oh no I'm not doing anything like that I'm just checking if there is any mysterious people behind this curtain. He moved his hands around as if he was looking for someone. "Nope. Seems like everything is okay." he said. Sweat was dripping down his face. His not so secret hiding place might get him in trouble or even worse a beheading. It was going to be hard for him to explain this one to his mother. He could picture it now. His mom was all happy doing her cooking when someone drops by with a bag. She happily accepts and when she opens it she would find his head in it. Such a cruel prank.

Dahlia raised an eyebrow as the young man went on a frantic tale to explain his presence behind the curtain. "Uh huh cause I'm sure you know that curtain dwelling monsters are the number one threat in this kingdom." She smiled thinking watching him squirm was quite a funny sight indeed. "You DO know that eavesdropping especially on part of the royal family is a no no right?" Another thought crossed her mind, she didn't know why he was here in the castle in the first place or his name. "Who are you exactly? Your position I mean and your name?"

"I'm a knight in training. Today I was learning about what to do inside the castle." he said. He could see the amusement in the girl's eyes. He started to feel his stomach turn. "My name is Lucian Nev from the village near the river. I'm eighteen years old." he said giving to probably giving to much information. He felt his face turned red and thought of how ridicules they looked talking behind a curtain.

Jessamine shrugged. "I guess...but they still could have found a better way to help me out." Like maybe made her learn how to take care of the kingdom, or making her at least understand the things she would have to do. But no; she was allowed to wander around wherever she pleased, doing whatever she wanted...well, almost wherever she pleased. Going outside was a problem, but she didn't even have the time to worry about that anymore. But of course she wouldn't understand the underlying difficulties; only her sister knew about the thief, which was what was making it so much harder than it needed to be. She shook her head. "Umm...tea; sure."

She smiled as he answered her and giggled a bit at how red he turned. "My aren't you a shy one why the red shade to your face?" She grinned peeking out of the curtain again watching her sister and the alchemist continued their walk before looking back at him. "Eighteen years old and a knight in training, it's very cute." She smiled brightly at him. "You may call me Dahlia and since we are giving ages here as well I am ninety-two years old." She quickly grabbed his wrist and pulled him out from behind the curtain when her sister was far enough away. "If you want to eavesdrop the only proper way is to do it with my permission so come we'll follow them. I was wanting to be with my sister anyway but you may join me." She walked a few steps away then paused watching him to see if he would follow.

Lucian look at Dahlia at amazement. He never met an elf before especially one that is 92 years old. Was that young or old? Thinking of that was making his head hurt. But the thing that caught him in surprise was that she was actually allowing him to eavesdrop on her older sister. What was he going to do? Would he follow the princess and find out what the soon to be queen talk about? Then the thought of Tanner came into picture. He was walking around the castle talking to himself. But then again he probably already figured it out that he was gone just continued doing his work. He shrugged off the thought and took the step to follow the princess. "By the way if your 92 then in human years how old would you be?" he said stopping by her side.

Moonshade sighed softly. She had known from the start that Jessamine was keeping details and without them, she had no proper advice to give. Still, she tucked the purple flower back into her hair. "A properly made cup of tea can help to relax the nerves. I know just the person to make it for us." As she lead on to the kitchen, she hummed a little tune that she couldn't seem to remember the words too. She had long forgotten just where she heard it but it stayed with her. In the kitchen, she embraced one of the older cooks. "Come to get yourself stomped in another round of chess Moonshade?" he teased but then he noticed the princess. "Oh, Forgive my manners, I did not see you there." He said bowing.
She just smiled and rested a hand on his shoulder. "Perhaps later, Gregori. Right now I was hoping that you would be willing to pour the Princess and I, a cup of that delightful tea you shared with me yesterday." He nodded softly and immediately set to work.

Jessamine shook her head. "Don't need to bow," she mumbled quietly, looking away. She had never been fond of the bowing, or being called princess usually...though she never said much loud enough for others to really hear. Apparently they played chess often; not that it was a problem. Just a random little tidbit. Maybe the tea would help...at least calm her down. She leaned against a wall, thinking. But the war only threw things out of balance; she didn't know what she was doing, or what to do about the prince, and the way thrown on top of that only caused more problems. She just needed more help than she was getting; she needed someone with some bit of experience in war, or dealing with it. "...I'm going to have to start talking with some of the more experienced knights..." she mumbled to herself.

She grinned as he came to stand beside her and began skipping away to catch up to her sister. She knew that her sister wouldn't like being eavesdropped upon but it's not like she would be angry with her little sister right? Besides she hadn't seen someone so close to her age in the castle before she had to think of something to get him to follow along. "My age in human years let's see." She bit her bottom lip doing the numbers in her head. "I would be around fourteen or fifteen in human years. We mature very slowly compared to your race. It's not like we live forever it will just take us a LOT longer to die of old age than it would you."

Lucian took what Dahlia had said and took a mental notes of it. He thought it was cool how it seemed to most people that they could forever oh how that must freak people out. He giggled at the thought. "So how are we going to listen on your sister?" he asked. He thought being hidden would be the most important factor. If there where guards and they weren't hidden enough he was going to have a lot of explaining to do. Or if her sister found out, Dahlia would have to explain. Either way they would get in trouble.

She smiled at him as he asked how they would go about their dastardly deed. "Well we'll listen in on her while hidden of course!' Giggling she slowed her pace when they neared the building she saw her sister enter. Motioning for him to be quiet and follow she creeped over to a small window that was cracked and peeped into it. "She's in here drinking tea. Well come along don't be shy lets have a listen shall we!" Dahlia obviously didn't realize the danger of allowing someone to do this. If Lucian had been a liar and was there to spy Dahlia would have easily been helping him. However in her mind it was just having a bit of fun with someone near her age.

Lucian slowed his pace as well as they neared the building. He stood on the other side of Dahlia so they could both listen in on the princess's conversation. He took a peek to see what the room looked like. It was the castle's kitchen, and well enough was the princess drinking some tea. There was also the girl she was with earlier. No matter how hard he tried he could not remember anything about her. "Hey who is that lady?" he asked pointing at the lady.

Moonshade thanked Gregori as he handed her a cup of tea. It gave off a sweet vanilla scent. Sipping at it, she leaned against a counter. She watched the Princess for a moment before deciding to give in and ask. "Is there something else bothering you?" It felt so strange to her to be asking. Her fingers circled the cup and she waited.

Jessamine paused, wondering what all she could say without getting herself into some sort of trouble...it was hardly traditional. She shook her head slowly. "...There is...but it's nothing you need to concern yourself with," she answered. She looked away, sipping once at the tea. It was good, relaxing...but that didn't mean the thoughts went away. "...It's this prince that bothers me most..."

Dahlia's eyes darted back to Lucian as he pointed out an individual he didn't know. "Oh that? She's the castle alchemist but also she's very good at solving problems and listening. I can only assume that's whats going on here. My sister is nervous about the suitor coming to the castle so she's talking to the alchemist about it." She raised her head a bit more into the window to get a better listen thinking she was taking great care of keeping hidden not realizing the top of her head was clearly visible to all in the room

"Oh." he said. He made a mental note about the castle's alchemist and the suitor coming to the castle. "Why does she need an arrange marriage? Does she not pick who she want to be married to?" he asked. He was confused because of the situation. Then he realized something, Dahila 's head was clearly exposed enough for everyone to see her. "Hey keep your head down they'll see you." he sternly said.

Jessamine sighed, and looked up. She paused, then shook her head. She recognized that one anywhere. She stood up, and walked out of the room. Her sister, knowing her, either saw her move, and had ran off, or she might not have noticed and was still there, looking for her. She walked calmly, slowly, out of the building, making her way to where she was sure her sister was. She stood behind her sister...and the knight that was there. It was one thing for her sister to spy on her...another for a knight. She waited patiently until one or the other would notice her.

"Oh sorry you're right." She lowered her head then peeped up again noticing her sister was no longer there. Where in the world had she gotten off to?! Sighing Dahlia slid down and turned to look behind them jumping back against the wall behind her at the sight. "Jessamine! Um, you know i was...the grass under this window is dried up! Tsk on the gardener!" She paused watching her sister to see if she believed the story then pointed her finger at Lucian. "It was his idea."

Yelping in surprise Lucian fell to the ground. "Hey! You were peaking to" He retorted. There it was, he was going to die because he was eavesdropping. He had to think quick. He remembered when he stole meat from the village butcher. He did this little trick that made him look like he was crying and to top that off he begged for forgiveness. It worked. So he went into a beggar position and started to do his trick. Fake tears came down his face and he kept on saying "Please forgive me.

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Hey...my posting will be a bit slow for a while...my computer had to get sent off and I won't have it back until probably the eighth of December, and until then I have to use my mom's computer, so I won't be on as often. Just letting you guys know.

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Ack; I used the wrong name. :P Maybe I need to pay more attention now. :P

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Yall i won't be able to get on for a few days, i'll post again probably Wednesday, but i'll try to post sooner.

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

awwwwwwwwwwwww........*wipes a tear from his eye (not really but yea)* Xia is being nice to Jacob.....i think i'm going to cry out of happiness (not really but yea)

LOL

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Well in truth to explain their negative reactions towards Jacob. Avard is a prince, he expects non-royalty to obey him… well… he is a child at heart… he throws a tantrum… as for Xia she sees you as a probably threat to her liege whom she would give her life before letting harm befall. As for Saldonis… he is just bitter… most people would be if those they defend thought ill of them… though he really hasn’t done anything mean… if he didn’t like you he’d have already attacked.

*sniffles (not really but yea...)* Raven why does your characters have to be so mean to my character, he's harmlessful *cries.(not really but yea)*

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

i'll post the Thief when the princess and prince get back to the castle.

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Alright, then. I'll send you what i can...can't send the picture that's there, though. Can send everything else, though.

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

If you want to, and you know you can play him along with the other characters you have, go right ahead. I just want to make sure you are capable of taking all three before you try, though. Don't want to put too much work on anyone...

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Crystal, this will push it a little bit, but if ya want i can try to take over the Thief and play as him as well.

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

I think Raven's characters hate my character, all 1500 of his characters. They all want to kill Jacob, does he pose that much of a threat to the kingdom?

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

hey yall, i hate to do this, but i've been feeling like crap for a few days and i'm going to be gone for the next couple of days, just until i get over this bug. it shouldn't be but a few days, i'll be back as soon as i'm over it.

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Okay; just so eneryone knows, I'm thinking about replacing the thief. He hasn't even logged on the site since his last post, and that's a while. He was supposed to be a more important part to the plot than that. Just FYI kinda thing, is all. :P

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Raven, i like that metaphore you used. "naught but an asp, rearing itself to strike"

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

Raven what do you mean by a shadow and a shadow of a knight?

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

my character will remember that.

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

It is... but its the best place to aim when you want a man to surrender... don't think there are many who would well... try and move and risk something as horrible as that.

Re: [OOC] War of Love and Duty

that was a cheap shot Raven.
