"Just keep watch Kitty, in case anything happens."
Elyssia's words ran through Kitty's head as she sat in the window seat, hidden by the drapes. Below her were some crates used for moving tiles, and her mistress and her lover. Kitty remained quiet, her ears listening intently to the murmured conversation below while her eyes watched the stable alley mouth. She personally thought Elyssia was playing a dangerous game, meeting her man outside at night. Why the young lady couldn't simply meet him inside, she didn't know. Kitty didn't have a candle, but she didn't need one with the soft glow from the torches on the main street. She would have sighed, but Demrin didn't need to know his sweetheart's maid was spying on them. Not that she'd be his sweetheart much longer. Kitty focused more on the couple while Elyssia started to tell Demrin just what she thought of him and the baker's girl. Kitty listened to his rising voice and stood up, quietly slipping out of Elyssia's bedchamber and moving down the stairs, picking up the porter's walking stick. The porter himself, Jens, was asleep in his seat by the door. Careful not to wake him, Kitty left the house through the trade door. She padded up the alley, keeping to the side. The redhead could pick out Elyssia's light pink gown and the other girl's dark curls, pinned up. Suddenly Elyssia gasped as she was pushed back against the wall by Demrin.
"You dance around and lead me on, of course I went for her. At least she's got the sense to lift her skirt," Demrin hissed, one hand over Elyssia's mouth. His hand was reaching for Elyssia's skirt when Kitty flew out of the dark with a hellish screech, swinging the walking stick to crash down across his shoulder. The wood splintered as Kitty kicked Demrin solidly in the back of the knees. He fell sideways into the stacked crates, sending the empty wooden containers skittering across the alley in a crash. Elyssia had dropped to the ground when Demrin had released her and Kitty seized her mistress's arm, dropping the remains of Jens' walking stick. Yanking the other girl to her feet, Kitty snapped
"Lift yer skirts 'n' run!" Following her own advice, Kitty yanked up the hem of her blue woollen dress to her knees and dragged Elyssia down to the kitchen entrance. She thumped the third panel from the left and then shoved the door. Thumping the panel released the bar from the inside, letting the two girls in. Kitty let go of Elyssia and tried to shut the door, but then one very angry young merchant's son crashed into the wood. Kitty tried to push back, but he was a good deal heavier than her. She was thrown back against the kitchen table, and Demrin was furious, his eyes lighting on her. As he took one step towards her, Elyssia's voice trembled from the other side of the room.
"One more step and I'll shoot you." Tear tracks ran down her face and her chin trembled as much as her voice did. Demrin stopped, eyeing her warily. Good lass, you remembered the crossbow. Kitty thought, backing up to beside her mistress. They kept the crossbow loaded in the kitchen for the peace of mind of the staff against vampire attacks. Never mind that most folk wouldn't be able to fire it fast enough.
Hurt pride had made Demrin bold, or perhaps brash. One prize idiot
"You wouldn't shoot me, Elyssia, dearest." He wheedled.
Kitty took the cross bow from the other girl, who buried her face in her hands. Her grip was much firmer, aim steady as she sighted at Demrin.
"She wouldn't. I would. So don' ye even think o movin', ye peice of pig scummer." Kitty was so furious she'd forgotten the cultured speak she'd learnt as a ladies maid. Something in her eyes told Demrin that unlike Elyssia, she wasn't bluffing.
"Ho, are ye alright?" Jens called out, and then Demrin's nerve broke. He ran out the doorway, the crossbow bolt thudding into the wall of the house next door. Elyssia sat down weakly.
"Kitty, you would have shot him..." The redhead was already out the door.
"GET BACK 'ERE YE ROTTEN PUSTULE! I AIN'T DONE WIT YORE HIDE YET!!" Kitty bellowed, dashing down the alley. Jens' bad leg meant that Demrin just evaded him, and ran out of the alley and around the corner. Kitty heard the clattering of horses hooves and yelled out "COWARD!!"
By now the whole house was raised up by the commotion, and Jens limped up to Kitty.
"Can ye look t' my mistress? She's fair shook up." Kitty told Jens. He grinned his lopsided smile at the girl he'd seen turn up as an 11 year old child.
"Ye still git the downtown drawl when ye're upset," he told her, as he made his way down into the kitchen. Kitty took a few deep breaths, furious with herself as well as Demrin. She'd been silly to wait upstairs, she should have been in the alley. She was foolish to even allow the meeting to take place outside. It was only a invitation to disastor. Her grip flexed on the bow, and then she forced herself to take a deep breath.
