Pandemonium’s Gate

Role-play Information

Okay, so in this role-play you will likely be taking the role of a member of one of four factions in a conflict for the world or realm known as Aurelia, the factions being; the nation of Ventera, the nation of Advara, Demonic Forces, and the lastly the Justicars. The center of conflict in this role-play revolves around a land known as Pandemonium; a once holy place turned tainted and evil by centuries of war and dark magics at work and now holds host to the demonic and hellish armies that seek to kill and cause pain to all the living creatures of Aurelia. One thing allows the demons to enter this world; a structure known as Pandemonium’s Gate …

But the question is will the factions and nations be able to put aside their differences and even the rivalry stemming centuries of war or will their stubbornness and unwillingness lead to the destruction of all things in Aurelia.

All these factions play their own roles and have their own histories of how they came to be and all have an impact on the role-play overall… I will now explain the factions a bit more.
(Let it be noted that there will players need for all factions, excluding the demons as if it comes to it they could be “self-lead” for role-play purposes. Also this rp takes place exactly one year after the “gate” opened allowing the demons to enter the realm)

Ventera

The nation of Ventera is one of the two large nations that take dominate Aurelia’s landscape, Ventera consist of mainly the western and northern parts of the realm giving it quite a variety of terrain. The lower portion of the nation borders Pandemonium while the eastern part of their border borders Advara.

The western part of Ventera has a multitude of terrains and hosts many of the nation’s cities and urban areas, while the north is for the most part densely forested and mountain terrain where only the strong survive. Ventera overall has is a much tougher place to live and prosper. The nation is divided the western part of the country being ruled by a handful of lords and generals; the north having some tribes that are lead by tribe leaders and elders. This causes a great deal of power struggle and some fighting within the nation.

The inhabitants of the country culturally differ from their rivals to the East; they are very warlike and power-hungry people. They value victory by any means and complete domination of their enemies. They believe there destiny is to bring all of Aurelia under there iron fist. They believe this will bring ultimate peace and had always seen Advara as an obstacle in this goal.

Image

Advara

The nation of Advara is the second nation that dominates Aurelia’s landscape; the nation dominates the southern and eastern parts of Aurelia. Pandemonium borders the nation’s most western area while there rivals border the more northwestern and northern part of their country.

The terrain of Advara is vastly different as the entire country has a variety of cities spread diversely throughout the country. But it also has dense thickets, woodlands, even a few mountains in the north where the border is; overall a much warmer and hospitable environment, but still dangerous in the wilds. Throughout the nation there is a monarchy style government where one person's word is law, the people of Advara normally respect the monarch and abide by the rules unquestionably.

In Advara they differ greatly from Ventera, the people are content and peaceful. They value prosperity and honor above all else. They also but a very heavy emphasis on justice… and this is why they fight; they feel that they have been wronged by the Venteran people as they constantly have their border encroached upon and their settlements raided. So this had given the people one purpose, to bring to justice to the nation Ventera; a nation as they saw as evil and a danger to Advara.

Image

The Justicars

The Justicar are not a nation but an order of the elite of both Venteran and Advaraian soldiers, mages, assassins and other useful professions. While some of the members of this order may have so old minor resentments towards each other they have all put aside their savage rivalries in the name of brother/sister hood.

They have seen the atrocities and have realized how dangerous the demons are, they know that if not stopped they will undoubtfully achieve their goal of eliminating all life in Aurelia. So they often lead campaigns into Pandemonium to hold the dark creatures at bay, but at great cost as their numbers already dwindle.

They know that unless the get outside help from the two feuding nations then they will eventually be crushed. So now they are for the most part given the massive burden of getting two nations that absolutely hate each other into fighting side by side to drive the demons back to wherever it is they came from…

Image

The Demons

Very little is known by the others about the demons. They are creatures born of sin, death, and most of all war. They currently have corrupt the land of Pandemonium to almost beyond repair; rivers run black with darkness, the ground is barren and tinted a dark black crimson color, and wildlife and earthly vegetation are none existent instead replaced by some evil blood covered vines and plant life that seem to live and breathe themselves.

It is said that the demons came when they land they now claim was corrupted by years of war, greed, and suffering. After so many centuries of bloodshed and death the once hallow ground became evil and tainted and the demons came along with this…

One thing does stand out in this land though, a large black metallic structure known as Pandemonium’s gate. It appears like a giant gate having large closing and opening doors; these doors cover a portal to some strange plain of existence that none have been but the demons. It is thought that humans could enter and possibly somehow destroy the gate…

But this is only a theory and to this point the demons endlessly come and it appears they won’t or can’t be stopped… only time will tell if humanity can survive there onslaught.

What will you do? How will you impact the realm? You decide!

Prologue

"Evil had always been present in the realm of Aurelia... from the very creation of the place to the present, and it will forever be even in the future. The evil existed in a multitude of forms both physical and spiritual, but there was nothing touched more by evil than humanity. Even in the earliest days of humanity there were two things that made humanity different from the creatures of Aurelia that made them more susceptible to evil. This was the morality of humans and their capacity to act in cruel and harsh ways. This often showed itself in the form of jealousy, envy, cruelty, vengeance, or any multitude of emotion or concepts but none of these were as evil as war...now is was through these actions and war that humanity slowly would start to corrupt any place they went."
-Excerpt from the Journal of King Valeric I

After many many years of growth and expansion the human race became dominant in Aurelia triumphing over nature and the other creatures of Aurelia. Nearly all the humans lived in the sacred place that was pandemonium and from the group of humans living in pandemonium two prominent figures emerged. Their names were Valeric and Daedriaus, these two men were great philosophers and leaders of the time and they were also sworn rivals. The two men fought and argued constantly about the direction that the humanity should progress towards. Valeric saw the evil in the world around him and sought to stop it, he thought that they needed to stay in Pandemonium to protect themselves from the evil that hid in the hearts of men. Daedriaus on the other hand thought that humanity had to expand and that their destiny was to conquer and control all of Aurelia no matter the cost...

This caused a massive difference of thoughts and beliefs throughout the populace and caused a growing tension between the two men and their followers... This was until one day when the two men were having a heated debate this resulted of this was bloodshed as the followers of both men fought; Daeddriaus would have no idea what his actions had done. As blood was shed on the hallow ground it became tainted. The land of Pandemonium had taken its first step on its long fall into darkness and corruption.

Daedriaus left Pandemonium with his followers and went Northwest where he established Ventera. Here he had his people thrive and waited as one day he planned on dominating all of Aurelia. Valeric and his followers stood true to their beliefs as they stayed in Pandemonium for many years practicing and maintaining the ideas of justice, honor, and other concepts of this nature. 40 years after Daedriaus left he turned his sights back on Pandemonium and his old rival. He sent his armies to the land, Valeric and his men being unprepared were driven back deep into Pandemonium as Daesriaus' men burned and destroyed everything in sight as they drove Valeric's men back. There was one decisive battle in which Valeric was finally able to rout the invading armies but the aftermath was worse than any could have imagined. Both sides suffered terrible losses and Pandemonium was left in ruin. The grounds were burnt, cities raised, and rivers ran red with blood.

Valeric was forced to abandon the once holy land as he took the survivors East and Northeast, there they quickly established cities and grew immensely, the people called their new home Andara and know they were given two new purposes. Firstly, they sought to reclaim there once scared homeland and somehow cleanse it of all its corruption. Two, they wished to bring judgment onto Ventera and it's denizens. From that point on the nation had a deep set hatred and the rivalry reached its peak. The two nations fought for generations, after centuries of fighting the borders of the nations formed and they appeared locked into a brutal stalemate. Years of war had their effect on both nations as the warriors on both sides started to become more ruthless and their sense of what was right and wrong started to deteriorate. The warriors of Advara now sought vengeance instead of dealing justice, and the warriors of ventera now sought only to cause pain and misery to centuries old rival.

Now both nations being stuck at a stalemate on the borders turned their eyes to Pandemonium. Both nation sent nearly their entire armies to the land, the sides fought brutally. For 15 years for the once sacred land, but every year they fought the pandemonium grew darker and darker. The land started to go barren, the wildlife started to disappear, and the weather became constantly stormy. Both sides now fought for the worthless place, both sides now so driven by vengeance and hatred they refused to back down. This was until terrible day...

Several years ago one a fateful day something happened. The barren ground started to turn the color of ashe with patches stained with the crimson color of blood, the ground started to shake violently, and suddenly bolts and ball of hellfish fire rained from the sky. Both nations watched in horror as it appeared like the end of the world was occurring. Then a dark metallic object started to raise from the ground and a gate opened and demons poured out...

Thank you for taking the time to read my very long prologue.
PS: Below I have added a map of Aurelia, it is handdrawn so dont not laugh lol

Akuma smiled at this poor creature. It didn't look much like a smile though, it appeared to be more of a toothy grimace. She believed the demon when it said it was just following orders. It called itself "The Rat". She had heard that name around the demon camps before, there wasn't much respect associated with that name and she could see why. Demons loved to show off their strength, they valued a creature's worth by how strong it was and this one looked like she couldn't even lift a sword. The Rat was wrong when she thought that Akuma didn't care for the Justicars.

"Did you really think I'd come after you if I hadn't already taken care of that? That arm is nothing but ashes by now, buried safely underground where it can't infect anyone and the rest of the body is going to end up the same way. Besides, if you're under orders you wouldn't dare return to your camp without spreading this disease so it made more sense to come after the source myself. "

She stopped smiling and carefully observed the Rat. There was a plan forming in her head but it would take a lot of tact to pull it off. This demon didn't seem like much of a threat so she relaxed a little but in truth she was ready for anything. She kept her arms behind her back so the Rat couldn't see the dagger in her hand and her wings were limber and ready to take off if the demon tried to run.

"So tell me Rat, you said that if I killed you your death would be swifter than the others. By others I'm guessing you mean the other demons. I've heard the way they talk about you and it doesn't seem like you get much respect. It really is a shame because you have a great talent with diseases and you must be smart to survive among the demons because you certainly don't seem like you have the strength. It really is a shame that such talents go unappreciated."

Sergei was up the tower with the fourth wave, him and his personal outfit of soldiers, most of them kinsmen or strong warriors from his own tribe. When the got to the top the battle waged somewhat well in their favor against archers, but the real advarian infantry had shown up, and it had proved to be a rather unstoppable force. They were establishing a landing zone somewhat effectively, until he heard the cries of "Fire!" And watched as the siege tower burst into flames. to ground behind him. He cursed to himself knowing that the only thing they had left was the heavily defended gate, one which has proven almost impossible to break. Up top Sergei was engaged in heavy combat with advarian soldiers. He was able to hold his own and so were his guard, but the weaker soldiers of the north, the first few waves, fell before him like sheep to a wolf. The numbers they managed to get topside before the siege tower was burnt to the ground, along with the sieging soldiers in it or around it, were small and at the rate they were falling dropping by the minute. Sergei knew it would soon be him and his own men left to stand up top and he wasn't ready to die just taking the border. With what men he had left he established a wall and behind it he drew his horn and sounded for a retreat. Intel was wrong and clearly they had the border heavily guarded. He wasn't going to slaughter his forces just to get behind it. The men inside continued to fight with the few advarians that didn't recognize the horn but for the most part the soldiers stood down. Sergei knew what was to come, but he wouldn't let Venterra fall to the Advarans. He spotted the high guard of Advara, and their leader Lauryn among them. All he could do was await her arrival before him. He looked over the wall to see what was left on the battlefield, all the dead men and charred corpses. He looked out to the north to see the forces safely retreating out of archer range. Atleast what was left of them, and he smiled, knowing they'd continue to fight if need be.

Lauryn Auriol

Lauryn Auriol saw the flames rolling in the distance, nearly a mile away. She had assumed the worse as she ordered her men to swiften the paces of their horse as they now ran towards the wall the banner of Advara flowing in the wind behind her along with the personal banner of house Auriol.

Mere minutes had past and her guard were approaching the fortified wall and battlements of the border. She had slowed her pace as she looked seeing none had seemed to penetrated the gate, she had also heard a familiar horn; she knew this was the horn of retreat custom to Venteran officers and generals. She looked up to the wall and saw the burning tower and the few men left on the wall in a defensive formation, and among them she saw the face of a man whom she had seen on the battlefield many times in the past. She ordered her guard to secure the walls and gate and dismounted her mount and took off her banner and held it in hand as she scaled the steps until she was on the same level as Sergei and his few warriors.

The woman now stead less than 10 meters (roughly 30 feet) away from the man safely behind 4 of her elite guard. She had her hand set on the hilt of her rapier and handed the banner to a nearby guard as she walked a few feet forward. She was wearing her armor and took off the helmet as she started to speak. "Sergei Kottorov, High General of Wintercliff... It seems to me that you have been caught by my forces". She used her hand and pushed the hair out of her face to get a better look at the man in the eyes for a moment as she thought of what she would do and how her action would affect her vision from the previous nights.

She turned away from the man as she walked away slowly looking at the battle field where Venteran corpses sit burning and the bodies of her own men sat ont he wall. Her head looked over her shoulder slightly. "Send his men to the gate and allow them to live... Sergei stays as I require him for something" She walked a few more steps. "He is not a prisoner as of yet, keep this in mind". She started walking down once more and her men looked shocked as Lauryn was not one known to be merciful to captives. This was very strange to them as they opened the gate and let all but Sergei leave.

Sergei watched as his men reluctantly departed from the gate, free to return back to the others, free to fight another day. He smirked, mainly because he knew she wouldn't kill him. She needed him, as much as he needed this border. Atleast that's the impression he was now under. He spat at what she said. "Captured? No, I've simply spared the bloodshed there would have been today." He spoke in his accent. He looked Lauryn in the eyes and spoke harshly. "So you say you need me do you?" He smirked in her direction as though he had the upper hand in the situation.

Back at the now reassembling war camp some armored riders were sent, to cross out to the other border of Venterra where Biorn was assigned to lead the camp. They rode with the banners of Wintercliff and had the fastest horses the north could offer. Their message was of Sergei's retreat and capture behidn the Advaran wall, Biorn was to be in command until Sergei was either returned or dead. This meant he would more than likely need to travel yet again, all the way out to the Advaran border for negotiations. The treacherous land in btween was known for its rogue lords or bandits. Meaning the convoy would more than likely be delayed a couple of days.

Sergei's blood brother Olaf was already regrouping the men of the north and planning a new form of assault on the wall, one that they would hopefully succeed in. The gate was heavily damaged and very close to being broken. With this notion construction was soon begun on a battering ram, something they had been without in the first assault.

Lauryn had paid very little attention to Sergei comment at the moment as she gave orders to the men having them make quick repairs to the walls and having them re-oil the ground in front of the wall and now the gate and if all else failed Lauryn had one last line of defense in mind but this was secret to all but her most trusted men. The forces were now bolstered by the Queen or Sovereign as she prefered Lauryn's personal guard more than making up for the losses from there earlier battle. The wall was now ready for another assault or as ready as it could be. With the wall attended to she walked into the tent where Sergei was being kept...

She walked slowly in as she set her helmet on the table with a map of the gate and surrounding area, she set her hands on the table and cleared her throat to speak. Her voice was gentle and soft yet there was an undertone of frustration in it. "Sergei you know you wouldn't have won this battle... and I decided not to make you my prisoner as a show of good faith do not make me change my decision" Her eyes shifted slowly up to the large man who towered over her. "And please don't think that I need you, you are disposable to me, infact I expect your men to attempt to get you once more. Would be a shame if they were to fail in taking my wall and the greater part of your army were decimated trying to besiege these walls. Especially with what i've set up for them..."

She walked outside the tent and crossed her arms, outside the tent were men loading something into the walls and behind the walls a series of catapults and ballistae were set up to punish and demolish any returning Venteran forces. She turned to Sergei "No will you negotiate or will you lead your men to slaughter.."

Striding through the demon camp, Alastor watched as the crowds loomed into sight, and subsequently parted, it had become frequent in the past couple of days that the demon leader had drawn together crowds of demons to offer out orders, As many demons were hungry and wishing to get out and fight. Though it seemed now the leader wished to send Alastor out himself, to try and fulfill a step within his plan.

The once booming noise of the crowd lessened to a din, as they regarded Alastor with unease, without a doubt he was one of the few demons within the army bar the leader himself that could command respect, even the leader understood that. " Alastor... you are to take a small force of demons and probe the northwest border... try and guage their resistance.. you are not to lead a siege do you understand?"

" If they come out... then i will engage" Alastor more told the leader, but still waited to see a reaction from him, as it was still was meant to be a question

" Very well.... the detachment waits on the outskirts"

" Tell them to catch up... i wish to leave with haste" Alastor said curtly, striding off without another word. His steps were now filled with intent and swiftly he passed outside the camps boundaries and was on for a quick march towards the northwestern border, He would undoubtedly arrive there on his own, and early, but probably near the mornings end, he hoped he might catch the borders patrol having breakfast

He eyed her down, he knew intimidation wasn't something he could use on Lauryn, past experiences on the field had led to that. "Let us negotiate then, friend." He stuttered out with distaste. "Tell me your terms Lauryn, for I believe we both know the fate that becomes us both." He looked out past her towards the gate. "You're gate is nearly finished, I don't believe a second siege would be kept out. Remember, we do have numbers over you here. Your border has faced more of an onslaught from the demons then ours, your fancy walls won't keep them out forever. With us breaking this gate, the eventual fall of Advara would surely come with it, if not from us then from the demons that would soon take over the North." He looked to her, she could see a tell of sadness in the last few words he spoke.

Back at the camp Olaf prepared for the second siege it was to happen if Sergei wasn't released by tomorrow night. The ram was ready, the gate would fall and the masses would soon poor into the border of Advara. In what was Sergei's command tent Olaf spoke to the captains and planned tactics and strategies rather than feasting with the men.

On the trail towards the border the messengers faced hard fought challenges, losing three men on the very first day to bandit attacks. Within the next few days one messenger remained, heavily wounded and without message he rode towards the border. Hoping to survive what may come.

Sergei's words had caused her to become agitated as she thought the man was stubborn and borderlines on ignorance, now this may have been from her lack of personal knowledge of the man but she turned to him and gestured to the wall "Sergei your men are undisciplined and fight barbarically. Do not think they will enter Advara ... those fancy walls stand 90 feet high and nearly 30 feet thick, and they have kept your kinsmen out since the days of your treacherous Founder Daedriaus (The creator of Ventera often worshipped as a god among men). Even if you do manage to break the gate my little... surprise will guarantee not a single Venteran soul crosses into Advara." She pointed to the men were loading some barrels into the walls of the great wall, Sergei wouldn't know but these were explosives to be triggered should The invaders break the gate, This would effectively create an impassable mountain of rubble on the border.

She calmed down now remembering the issue at hand and leaned on the table. "I want you and your men off my border immediately. I need these men on the southern borders near Pandemonium... they are massing up and preparing an assault on my border and i'll imagine yours as well and to be honest the demons worry me more than your people."She walked to the opening of the tent and looked towards the wall. "But i'm curious do you think if Advara falls to either the demons are even your own troops that Ventera will be able to fend them off... If they could take on an empire with like the might of Advara what will stop them from running through your lands?" She laughed "Brute force will not stop these demons."

She thought on this she knew more than anyone that demons would crush everything in there path and this worried her yet she kept up the facade of being in control as she knew that if Sergei wouldn't see reason then this war was already over. This meant if she couldn't convince him then i'd be up to the angel of death and she would have to blow the wall on the border to halt the increasingly aggressive Venteran armies. "I want you to think on this; do you think Ventera even as great as you think it is can take the demons?" She paused for a moment continuing to stare into the distance "Now you have my permission to leave just bare this in mind Sergei Kottorov..."

Sergei laughed at her words, he looked out South with a crooked smile, then back towards the wall and gate. "You are as naive as I figured you would be, why is it you think we're trying to get into Advara? We could care little for your culture and empire, we want to hide behind your wall as much as you and your puny men do." He began to walk towards the wall. "Wintercliff will fall, that is something I've known since the gate opened. I just wish the men and woman of Venterra wouldn't be forced to go with it because of you and your bloody empire." With that he turned and picked up his pace.

A scout at the camp came running, the gate was opening. The moment the message arrived Olaf and a landing party of six armored men were off towards the gate on horseback. The force was too small for them too be aggressive so they didn't fear Advarian retaliation. They brought with them a riderless horse in anticipation of Sergei's release.

Sergei's mind rested on the demons, and the impending doom ahead of them. The Justicars were not a group Sergei trusted, having entrusted a demon. He despised Western Venterra but knew he'd need to unite Venterra under one probable cause in order to survive the demon invasion. He also feared Advarian trickery and invasion aswell but that was the least of his worries. The Justicar beast was looking for him. He figured it would be sometime tonight.

Lauryn sat with her hands behind her back as the man walked by, she had a rather foreboding look on her face; yet she couldn't help but fill a small amount of guilt for her actions and words. She had misjudged the General even if she disagreed with his actions she could respect his thoughts were of the safety of his people. She also felt this way after hearing that so many people even Venterans would fall to such a horrible fate.

She almost decided to stop Sergei but her pride stopped her, she even for the way she felt could not bring herself to swallow her pride and propose an alliance or even a ceasefire. None the less she could only assume or hope that she had at least talked Sergei into going to take his troops to his own border despite her better judgement she still feared retaliation and decided that she must leave her armies divided, leaving half here and the other half defending the border. She did this begrudgingly but felt it necessary.

She gathered her personal guard and sent them towards Freymere where she would ready the rest of her armies to dispatch for the gate and where she would send a portion to the border. She then turned around to face the remaining men who would hold the gate. "I want repairs started on the walls" She thought long and hard about the last part. "Take the explosives from within the walls, they are to precious to destroy." She had realized one thing from Sergei and this was destroying the wall would be a terrible decision and she realized that she had lost herself in the moment to her zealous hatred instilled in her. She then Started to speak once more. "We are not abandoning you brethren and I would not lead you to slaughter, if the Venteran come in force before I return or before reinforcements come fall back to Freymere and we will retaliate in force..." She hopped on her horse and held the banner of Advara and raised it "For Advara!" She turned and rode off toward Freymere.

"Talents," Phoenix repeated, "Surviving isn't a talent for her, it's a requirement. Hide, eat, kill, eat, stay in the dark, stay in her hole. What about you, she wonders, if demons are strong then why aren't you?"

Phoenix stood up, "They are vicious, they rip, they tear with teeth and claws. You have lived with your humans too long to remember. You've become too soft and domesticated. The Rat maybe a worthless demon, but at least she is still a demon. She is unsure if you are anymore." The small demon stepped over the hole and started to move forward slowly, though tense ready for anything whether it be to run or fight, kill or die.

"A real demon would have already killed Rat by now for less than spreading the plague among your humans. A real demon would have ripped her to shreds at the sight of her hiding. Tell me what happens to a demon when it becomes domesticated? Does it turn human? Does it become cute and cuddly?" She turned back to the Angel of Death, "The Rat knows who she is and she is a demon. She's ripped and teared her way through humans. She's created plagues that leave animals to cower her now. And she's enjoyed all of it," she smiled at this, a toothy grin revealing a set of surprisingly white teeth though they were still chipped, "But she isn't sure what you are. You who still parades around like a demon, you who still uses your demonic powers, but your blood lust is gone and you've started to care. What is that? What are you?"

Phoenix walked further into the woods, in no particular direction. She knew she had to shake this 'Angel of Death' off before she could complete her task. After listening to this so called 'demon' talk, the fear that she would even be killed let alone a torturous death had diminished. She stood by what she said earlier, if this 'demon' were to kill her, it would be quick and the pain wouldn't last, but if the demon's leader were to catch wind of a failure on her part she wouldn't be allowed to die so quickly. It was an easy choice; cause pain and avoid the demon leader's wrath or leave the demon's and know what pain is more than any other. If all it took was to spread a little plague, one that was just supposed to kill, then that's what she would do even if it meant going against this woman who called herself a demon. Phoenix had survived much worse than a fight with this woman and she knew it.

(No problem)

Akuma shrugged. She had tried to be kind to this pitiful creature but in the end it was still a demon, just a mindless killing machine that seeks only death and destruction. She didn't move from her spot against the tree when the thing called "Rat" stood up and began to move around but she kept her wings at the ready and her arms behind her back. She held the dagger in her left hand and now gripped a poison tipped kunai in her right. She listened to it's words and laughed, it was a harsh, mocking sound that rang throughout the silence of the woods. "Don't you know it's dangerous to make assumptions Rat? I never said I wasn't strong, I just haven't shown you my strength, yet. You call me soft and domestic, you say I am not a demon anymore but you forget yourself Rat. If you walked into a demon's camp you would be ridiculed, pelted, and generally hated. Even though I associate with humans I can walk into any camp I choose and be treated with the utmost respect."

"Another assumption you've carelessly made is that I 'care' about the humans. I look out for them because I need them and I can't have you ruining my plans. You know nothing about me and yet you assume I am soft because I haven't killed you yet. I don't even need to kill you, all I need to do is make sure your little plague attempts fail and your murderous leader will kill you for me." She stood and walked slowly, keeping all her senses tuned to the Rat and to her surroundings.

"One last thing Rat remember that no matter who wins this war I will be just fine. The humans wouldn't kill me and the demons respect me enough not to try but you, the humans would kill you on sight and even if the demons are victorious that doesn't guarantee that you'll live, I don't have to kill you, but you're no good to me alive." With that she sent the kunai flying from her hand, directly towards the Rat's neck and burst forward, brandishing the dagger in her left.

It was luck and instinct that had gotten Phoenix out of the way of the kunai, but only just. The small weapon did cut the side of her neck, spilling blood onto her shoulder. The little demon heard a force moving quick through the air and ducked down, she could feel the other demon sail over top of her. It seemed that running away wasn't an option this time. This time the Rat had to fight to survive...as always she obliged. A little blood never scared her even if it was her own, as long as she was the last one standing as for as Phoenix was concerned, she was victorious.

Phoenix lunged the minute she heard the other demon touch the ground, hoping to catch her off balance. She slammed into the other demon's middle, knocking them both to the ground. Her odd hat being knocked off as well. With little time to gain her own balance, Phoenix began to lash out. Her nails grabbing and pulling onto anything they could grab. Her teeth scraping skin and dirt. If this demon was a human and other found their body, they might have thought that the human died of an animal attack. This was one strength that the Rat had over other demons because when hunting a demon humans would go looking for bodies that looked like they were attacked by demons, not by animals. This kept her safe from demon hunts and led unsuspecting humans to her when they were on animal hunts. It was an arrangement that Phoenix had been perfecting and loved over the years.

All powers have limitations and one that really restricted Phoenix's protection of herself was that her powers only worked on humans and animals; demons would just be subjected to severe biting and scratching. This doesn't mean that Phoenix was still completely powerless to leaving a demon mangled.

After the up front attack, Phoenix jumped away pulling two crude looking knives. Her body stayed low to the ground, one knee resting on the dirt while the other was bent out and away ready to push forward, her arms were spread, knives facing the opposite direction as the Rat's opponent, a snarl revealing her chipped teeth once more.

"The Angel is the first to strike she sees," the Rat said, tilting her head, "You're done playing games it seems? But why? If she is truly the Angel of Death than like Death she can wait...and yet you're impatient. Seems the title is misplaced."

Akuma lay on the ground and grinned a wolfish smile, revealing all four rows of pointed white teeth. The Rat was quick on her toes, she'd give her that but her attacks were wild and unfocused, making them far less effective. Akuma didn't even bother getting up from the dirt, this demon really didn't understand her at all. She twirled the dagger between her fingers while her other hand firmly gripped another kunai. She had several of them hidden all over her body. This little demon just didn't understand what was in store for her, her naivety made Akuma laugh, and she never laughed.

"You just don't understand, do you Rat? You think I'm done playing games? I haven't even started yet. You think my title is misplaced? Just remember it was given to me for a reason, look at that tree over there and tell me what you see." The tree in question had the a kunai embedded in it. The same kunai that had cut the Rat's neck just moments ago. The bark around the kunai was turning black with rot and the poison was spreading every second. The blood that still remained on the blade was thick and clotted and the green from the poison mixed with the red and turned it a deathly brown.

"You see what's happening to that tree? It's going to happen to you if you don't get some help soon, and I don't think there's a soul out there, demon or human, that would be willing to help you. So you see, I've already won this fight. You can still try and attack me with your little scratches and bites but in the end you will die and nothing can change that. However, I just may be able to save you. I doubt you'll take my offer but I'll never know unless I try. I will heal you, take all of the poison right out of your little body and make you healthy again and all you have to do, is sign on the dotted line."

Death snapped her fingers and a rolled up piece of parchment and a pen appeared in a puff of smoke. She pointed towards Rat and the paper unrolled itself and levitated towards her. On top in large letters it read 'CONTRACT' and below that were the terms of her agreement. It said 'If I Akuma Sayako save you The Rat from certain death then you The Rat must assist the humans in winning the war. You The Rat do no have to answer to anyone but me Akuma and you will be under my protection against any and all humans. You The Rat are not allowed to kill any humans unless they pose a direct threat to your life and I am not around. Once the war is over you will be free of this contract and allowed to do as you please to both humans and demons. At the bottom of the contract it said 'SIGN HERE' ___________________________

"One last thing Rat, there's no ink in that pen but just dip the tip in that cut on your neck and you can sign with that. Sign with that infected, poisonous blood of yours. You'd better make a choice quick because by my count it looks like you don't have much time left. Your nervous system will start to shut down soon and you'll go blind shortly after that so you might want to hurry this along."

The Rat didn't move as the paper floated to her. Sign? she thought. She had never learned to read or write and at this moment reading would have been impossible as she was only seeing vague outlines of everything around her. She was left not knowing what to do. She could feel the poison now, after the adrenalin had pumped for the fight it had only increased the poison's decent further into her body. She could feel her limbs starting to shake and twitch out of her control. Her decision, as she couldn't read the contract at all, was a rash decision. All that went into her thinking was she didn't want to die yet, she could figure out the contract rules later.

"...and you'll go blind shortly after that so you might want to hurry this along."

"Too late for that," Phoenix said. She wiped two of her fingers, hand shaking, and brushed it across the bottom though it wasn't necessarily on the line it was the best she could do. Phoenix knew there would be a double standard that would pop up eventually, but for now she was a safe. Demon's who made contracts always kept their word, not to say they weren't a manipulative bunch and they always chose their wording well, but whatever was in the contract would be kept. It was demon's like the Rat who never ran straight. Their decisions would typically be made on whims and they could change sides with the snap of a fingers even if they had promised. However, Phoenix, once she knew what the contract said, knew she would have to follow this one either that or this woman would kill her. The small demon had to always think about her survival, it was a constant. If she made one enemy "happy", or not wanting to kill her, she would keep it that way as long as she possibly could.

"Seeing as she is blind right now, the Rat wonders if you could read her what was written on it?" ]Phoenix asked. Her body changing it's mood. She had gone from rigid and ready to fight to the death to more relaxed. Instead of in a position that would lunge her again at the Angel she now sat cross-legged on the ground, leaning on her arm which were placed in the center of the circle her legs made. Though she was finding it hard to hold this position as her limbs were now starting to jerk even more from the poison's attack on her nervous system.

Akuma was genuinely shocked. Any other demon would have outright refused her offer and more than that any other demon would have tried to kill her as well. After the Rat had signed the contract vanished the same way it appeared, in a puff of smoke. But the Rat wasn't like other demons, it seemed that her life meant more to her than taking her opponent's. Akuma silently tucked that bit of information away, it might be of good use to her later. She sat up and looked over at the Rat, reaching into her pocket, searching for the antidote. It was a small glass vial topped with a cork, easy to hide and easy to find. Within was a blue liquid that seemed to give off a faint glow. The Angel doubted that Rat would attack her if she brought the antidote over herself but this demon was unpredictable so instead she levitated the small vial over to her.

"You made the right choice Rat, I know you can't see but just put your hand out and you'll feel the antidote, it's right in front of you. Now, I'll give you the abridged version of the contract. It said that if I saved you from dying then you have to help me help the humans to win this war. You don't take orders from any humans, you take the from me but you aren't allowed to kill any humans either. You can only fight a human in self defense and only if they attack first. I doubt any humans will attack you when they find out that you're under my protection but just in case they do you can fight them. Once the war is over this contract is null and volid and you're free to do whatever the hell you want. I have my own plans for this world and once the demons are dealt with I won't have time to look out for you anymore. Any questions Rat?"
