Story brainstorm:
So far into the future, we don't know whether it's Earth, another planet, or just a ball of metal floating through space...
Either way, it's immense. Floor upon floor upon floor... on infinity. Nobody knows the highest level. La dee da. (As you can tell, this IS a brainstorm.)
Eleshafts, a tube one presses their destination and then steps into to get whisked away to, are located in hexagonal patterns every so often, very accessible. No matter where you are, you can always see one.
Every few floors (5? 10?) there is a level dedicated to food. In equal intervals, there is waste (bathrooms, singled out - very private). All other sections are residential.
Some areas are unaccounted for, solid steel walls.
Levels 1001 - 2000 are balconied, and there are massive vehicles and cavernous spaces.... everything below is thought to be toxic rubble piles including burned out buildings, waste (organic and mechanic). This is called quite literally, The Underground.
For those who know of it, it is a lively place - races, gangs, orphans. Rumour even has it that this is what is left of Earth. Giant steam vents (thousands of feet wide) pockmark the surface - and many conduits and pillars which are assumed to support the infinite expanse of layered metal above.
Ascension. Go higher.

The world hadn't ended. There was no nuclear holocaust, alien race, or even a savior that had eliminated us all.
Something must have gone horribly wrong, because we are still here.
We don't know what the date is, we don't know where we are, and we don't know what got us here.
((Sar, mind giving me a hand here? I ran out of time here at work. =P))
