A sanctuary for the ill and fearful...

13,566 readers have visited Barlo Mansion since Alappassi created it.

Introduction

The story is not set in our world, it is set in it's own world, that is similar to ours. There are cars, cell phones, and cameras. I wanted to give it it's own bit of mystery by placing it somewhere unknown.

In the world of Ferya there are people of all sorts. There are demons and angels, dwarves, elves, and of course humans. The world is modern with cell phones and high tech cameras and tape recorders. There is no avoiding the development of new things. Buildings are being built from sheet rock and steel beams. Cares zoom down interstates and planes fly through the large fluffy clouds. Mostly only humans inhabit the busy cities, as the other races prefer to stick to "the old times." There are still many parts of the beautiful world with cottages and farms.

In the small town of Mirrim sits a large mansion. The building is three stories high with a bell tower at the very top. it is said that part of the mansion was once a church. Legend says that the mansion was built by some of the first settlers of the town, but that they had passed away due to a famine and now haunt the many halls. The building went many years without an owner, but it has recently been bought by a wealthy family, who plan to put it to good use.

The Saiforro family has purchased the mansion and worked on it for about a year to make it suitable to live in. Every room has been furnished and it is the family's hope that people will move in soon. Anyone who moves into the mansion will be well taken care of. There will be food on the dinner table for every meal, bedding will be washed, floors swept, rooms cleaned, and constant medical care available. The mansion is open to anyone whom may need it, but it is mostly intended for those with some form of mental or physical illness.

On the first floor of the mansion sets a ballroom, office, dining room, kitchen, five bedrooms with connecting bathrooms, infirmary and several storage closets. The second floor is made up completely of bedrooms, each with their own bathroom and balcony. The third floor, which contains the bell tower, is strictly off-limits. No except the Saiforro family may enter this floor, and it is always guarded.

Barlo Mansion is open to beings of any race or species.

Alice was i. The middle of two men.. This wasn't a position she was ever in before. One was overly nice and attentive, in a fried my way, the other was bitter. She wandered if they were patients playing a mind game with her, but for now, she believed what they said.

"Look," she spat, frustrated with confusion and still feeling quite I'll from the night before. "I... Something happened to me last night and I got lost. Can someone at least give me some new clothes?" She looked down at her white, damp dress. She then turned her eyes to the bitter one. "And no, I do not have a boyfriend." She sighed and looked back down at her dress, her thoughts running wild and her heart beating, causing her face to blush in response to his remark.

It seemed like his choice of wording went clear over both their heads. "You'll take care of any intruders, won't you?" He nodded to Lark, or "boyfriend" from his past statement; at this point, he was still unaware of who he was and his position in the house as he'd only met Tarik.
Jordyn couldn't help but smile, bordering on a laugh, at the idea that someone as old as Lark still drooled, 'I suppose some children take longer to develop..' He thought internally. Before Barlo Mansion, he'd spent time with similar children but it was never for very long. Not very long at all.

>'Guards in the mansion you cannot see?'
The idea of that sent out an alarm to Jordyn. "If you can't see them, how do you know if they're there ? And, how do you know they aren't watching you in the shower?" Quite relevant questions if you asked him. Not to mention, he was sure that the girl was wondering the same thing so he was doing them both a favour.

Jordyn brought his hand to his forehead and lightly pinched the space between his eyebrows with the points of his rings, if this girl had been sleeping - whatever event took place would not have happened. Now he almost felt obligated to keep an eye on her.
"That can change, if you'd like." Another witty remark, likely more facetious than the first seeing that she was so riled up already. Oh well.

Lark scowled at Jordyn playfully, "Now now there... im not allowed to... have relations with residents." He then looked at them both. "Im guessing that Tarik greeted both of you, so we have not officially met yet. I am Lark Saiforro, my parents own the mansion. They are currently away on... business, so I was left in charge to take care of arrival day... Also, ma'am, I can get you some clothes. We have plenty of spares around here somewhere... I think Tarik may know where they are. Also, if you would prefer, I can give you some money and you can head out into town and buy your own clothes... if you would like..."

So many emotions began running through her, and she could have just as easily made a crude insult towards the strange bitter man, but instead, she chuckled. Her laugh sounded like a whispering lullaby, and her lips parting a bit. It was the first time she truly smiled since she got here.

It was nice finally put a name to a face when Lark introduced herself. She turned towards him, feeling a little more comfortable. "My name is Alice. And I'll take whatever you have, thank you. I don't really know the town that well, I'm... I'm not really around from here." She looked about the room, hoping there would be some sort of piano for her to find comfort in, something to do while se figured herself out. She turned to the other man. "And you? What is your name?"

Ordinarily, Jordyn would've just taken his claim at face value but because of the edge in which he'd delivered it, Jordyn assumed that he wanted to.. or that it's already happened. What a player, this one~
"But are we?" There wasn't necessarily anyone the young man was interested in that he'd seen so far, at least not like /that/. But, it was definitely worth asking. Feeling a bit of strain on his neck, Jordyn fixed his position so he sat properly and rubbed it a bit.

"Weren't the two of you already here when I came in?" He pointed to Lark with a sharp finger. If he didn't let her in then was it one of the invisible perverse guards that he'd conveniently left out of conversation?

"Jordyn McTosh." He said simply as he was /preeettty/ sure he introduced himself earlier. Maybe the girl had a problem with her head too? Wait, was that what he seemed like to others ? He'd certainly hoped not.

(Sorry I was gone so long guys. My internet is being more horrid than usual today... )

Lark scowled again, playfully. "Hey, we were not up to anything. I was just letting her sit by the fire so that she could get warm. And Alice, thank you for telling me your name. It's nice to be able to put a name to a face," He chuckled.

All was silent for a moment, then a light scratching noise could be heard. Lark raised an eyebrow and looked around. After a few moments of puzzlement a large black feather floated down from the ceiling and landed softly on his nose. "Eh?"

"Right." Alice sighed and looked from Jordyn to Lark, not exactly sure what kind of relationship they had shared. She got up and brushed herself off, sending Jordyn and small smile, thanking him for his milk entertainment. She needed a laugh.

Alice's attention geared towards the feather floating down. She furrowed her brow, and gently walked over and lifted the feather from his nose. Biting her lip, she felt an odd sensation coming from it, as if it were a sign that someone else, or something else were approaching. She let it settle to the ground and faced the two of them.

"How about those clothes then?" she asked, raising her soft eyebrows. "And is there any food here?" She wondered quietly to herself if either of the two held any sort of special powers, if perhaps they could relate to what she had endured the last day and half. Perhaps they shared a similar power to her, perhaps not. Either way, it would make her feel less alone.

Yet again, what he said had been missed. Lark claimed that Tarik would've let her in the mansion and therefore, he hadn't had the chance to introduce himself, but, if they were in the same room.. how could he not have introduced himself sooner ? Ah well, it wasn't terribly important so he let it drop. "I understand, Mr. Saiforro. Whatever you say, Mr. Saiforro." The last thing Jordyn wanted was to upset the lovely Mr. Saiforro on his first day so he stopped making it seem like he was attacking his character and integrity.

He ran gold-adorned fingers through his dark blonde hair and watched as the episode with the feather played out. How odd. The others saw it too, which meant.. it was actually there ? Well, Jordyn had no reason to disbelieve at this point - unless, them noticing it was a sign that things were going to get bad, and fast.

Jordyn's breath caught in his throat then.. Alice dropped it and starting asking about food or whatever. Sweet relief. But sheesh, what was everyone's preoccupation with food in this mansion? Next, it would be him clamoring to stuff his face.
Still, he couldn't shake the feeling that he needed to get some air. What was the time...?

Lark looked down at the feather and frowned. "Ask Tarik, the medic, for some clothes... he should be in the infirmary. I have to... go take care of something..." The young man had a serious tone now, all of his child-ness seeming to have disappeared in thin air. \

"Im sorry to leave you all hanging... and... as far as food goes, dinner is served from six to eight. You may go into the dining hall during any of those hours to grab some food and eat..."

And with that Lark turned on his heel and hurried out the door.

It seemed as though the strangeness would never end. Alice watched Lark walk off, following his figure until he was out the door. Strange she thought, but then again, this entire place was incredibly strange. She shook her head and looked towards Jordyn for some sort of answer.

"Well," she said, straightening up and shaking her head, trying to free herself from the emotions she had felt earlier. "It's just you and me, huh?" She looked around the room, and found that the windows had been draped with currents. She gracefully walked over to them--much, much taller than her--and flapped them open to get a better view of the place. It was already dark despite the fact it was early evening. The moon was barely out, the starts lightly shining. It was then that her power began to take place and she felt a jolt inside of her. Suddenly, she became ghostly white, her skin nearly transparent, and she felt like she could fly through the air if she wanted to.

She looked up towards Jordyn, biting her lip. "I'm sorry...It's my first time learning my power." She closed her eyes and tried to breathe carefully. "At least now I can stay in one place." She met eyes with Jordyn. "Would you mind taking me to Tarik? don't quite know this place well."

Everything was going on at once - even the new girl was noticing it. He had to wonder the cause of Lark's sudden disappearance but his mind soon shifted to other things, like his own worries. He wished he knew the time though, but judging from the mention of dinner time being between six and eight, it must've been in the hour of five (Between five and six). Maybe.

The girl spoke and he offered a nod, "Yeah. Just you, me and the guard standing next to you." Of course, that was meant to be a joke but he wasn't sure how well-received it would've been. He'd started feeling a bit despondent and he was hoping it wouldn't immediately show. So, what was it, Phase 1 now ? Or, just approaching, more like. When he saw the sky, he sighed longingly - it needed to be darker - and he realized that his first approximation of it being near five P.M. had to be wrong. Time flew quickly from the time he first arrived.

Jordyn got to his feet when she turned phantasmal and took a step in her direction. Just what...was she ? Too many possible answers and classifications so he didn't bother mentally listing them all. But, at least he wouldn't be able to hurt her if she maintained that form.. right ? "I came straight from the entrance to here so I'm afraid I'm just as lost as you are, Casper."

James got up from the bed and it seemed in those few minutes of resting he had all his energy back. He looked over at his sister who was still checking out there room. "I'm starving Ashe." He spoke as his stomach made a growl. "Well there's nothing I can do about that James, go figure out when food is served or something." Marie answered with a sigh. "Okay, I guess I will, but you're coming with me, right?" James asked. "You'll have to make me." Marie answered in a playful tone. Just then James shot up out of the bed and picked her up like it was nothing. "Lets go Ashe!" He said back just as playfully. Marie kicked and struggled a little lightly screaming and giggling. "Put me down James! You know I hate being picked up!" "I know." He added before he started walking out of the room, Marie in his arms, and down to the common room.

The twins spotted a normal looking teenager chatting with a pale ,you could say ghostly, figure so James decided to walk over, with Marie still in his arms, and ask for the time. "Hey there! Do any of you know what time it is, or when supper starts, 'cause I'm starving." Marie pounded on his back. "Hey, that's rude. Now, can you at least put me down now?" James followed her orders and sat her down softly. "Is that better?" Marie just answered with a nod.

Winter sighs as she knocks on the door. 'At our new home, kid.' She thinks. It's cold outside, and winter is glad she wore a sweater. She's also glad she didn't pack much, only a backpack with a few outfits inside. She shifts on her feet as an uncomfortable feeling washes over her. She can no longer tell if it's herself or if its her. That's why she's here. Hopefully someone will be able to help her. Or help her help herself. Winter knocks on the double doors again and hopes someone gets to her soon. Her sweater isn't that thick.

Damakos successfully makes his way into the Barlo Mansion without causing any commotion, carefully climbing into a bedroom from the window outside. His daytime regiment consists of hiding among the flora out front, using the disruptive patterns of his outfit to camouflage his appearance. Hiding his odor is a challenge.

His nighttime regiment consists of climbing the mansionโ€™s structure, scaling around to find a good place for him to enter undetected, silent, invisible to the naked eye. Damakos exhibited a meticulous attitude in his entrance, hoping to avoid the obligatory squeaking wooden floor on his way in.

He takes the time to observe the empty bedroom, king sized bed in the left hand corner, door on the right hand leading to a bathroom. It looks nice, but business comes first. He made his entrance, the next objective is to find out who is here, who can and cannot be trusted.

His actions are unusual. Clearly Damakos belongs to Barloโ€™s Mansion for the ill; he even received an invite, the open doors were right there to embrace him. This distrustful Tiefling instead bites the hand that feeds him. The only thing he can manage right now is searching around the bedroom.

Tsuakasa held her heavy bag close. There wasn't much in it, but it was heavily laden with the burden of a good night's worth of thievery. The silver necklaces and fancy cutlery jingled inside the bag as she walked with determination. A stubborn young one, Tsukasa did not give a crap about anyone or anything who may try to stop her from what she had to do to survive, which was stealing things from people. But of course, she could have a soft side when she chose to, which was not often.

It wasn't uncommon for people at different marinas to mention a young girl whom they referred to as "Crab." When captured, Tsukasa could be a very nasty opponent, and many people have lost fingers and eyes as a consequence to having grabbed hold of her before. People had come to learn that, if Tsukasa stole your things, let her keep them.

She had gotten a notice from a local baker that Barlo Mansion had opened. Tsukasa loved stealing things and living a life of freedom but... was an empty stomach and freezing cold nights out on the street really worth it? She hardly thought so. Her homeless companions begged her not to leave and when she refused to change her mind they started harassing her. Yeah, what friends they had sure turned out to be...

As Tsukasa neared the mansion she noticed that the front doors were open. She entered but no one was there to greet her, so, she decided to escort herself around the large building. She went up the stairs and down one of the long hallways before stopping and opening one of the bedrooms doors.

As soon as she did so she froze. Something, was a bit off... did she smell something? or was it just her imagination. The thief stood silent and used her ears to figure out whether someone else was in the room or not. She heard nothing, and she saw nothing. Tsukasa took a step inside and gazed around. That is when she spotted Damakos.

She froze.

What? She had never seen anything like him before. What was he? Where was he from?

Damakos does not hesitate. He went to work immediately with a thorough scanning of his surroundings by lurking towards the door directly to his right. He grasps the doorknob with gloved hands and gives a slow twist with a careful push to avoid the door squeaking. With the door barely half way opened, he stalls, glancing at the ceiling and upper part of the door for any traps. There are none.

He enters the bathroom and glances to the mirror on his right. Damakos grimaced at his portrait and imagined the glass shattering. For the sake of being stealthy, this remains a perception. The sink contains hygienic products, but he grazes them; he reaches to the handle of the mirror and gently opens it. Nothing there but ailment related medicine. He squats down and opens the sink's cabinet to find cleaning products.

He glances over to the tub behind him and toilet on his left. There are towels well folded up with washcloths over them, shower curtains recently replaced. So far the bathroom looks and smells clean "No window?" he whispers. Damakos abandons the bathroom and heads to the dresser drawer next to the bed, near the balcony he entered. The first and second drawers contain conveniently placed sheets, comforters and pillow cases should the ones on the well decorated bed become dirty.

The 3rd and 4th are empty. Right now Damakos can deduce a couple things about this place: The owner takes good care of this place. The owner wants his/her/their guests to feel right at home.

Damakos cringes at the thought of being accustomed to hostility only to be invited to a place masquerading as a friendly atmosphere. It is one of the oldest tricks in the book. His thoughts are interrupted by the squeaking of his bed room door!

His eyes widen, tail swishing side to side, glancing over his shoulder to Tsukasa... a human! He shifts his entire body to face her, remaining stoic with caution. "I knew this was too good to be true..." he grumbled.

"Er....." She didn't quite know what to say. if she had intended on stealing from Damakos this wouldn't be awkward. But she wasn't, so it was. Tsukasa had never surprised someone by walking into their room before. This was a first, and well, she didn't really know what to do. Maybe she should give him one of her items as a sorry gift? No. She couldn't, not her precious silver items.

But maybe...

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a thin braided leather string that had a tiny green stone on the end. She stared at it for a moment before holding out her hand and offering it to him. She bit her lip under mask as she waited.

Was he friendly? Would he attack her? Tsukasa could always take her mask off and bite him.

Damakos honestly does not enjoy the company of other humanoids. He dislikes humans as much as even his own race at times. The presence of one in this place earned his disdain even more so than how well kept everything was. There isnโ€™t anywhere else to go because she is in the way right now. She is under his scrutiny.

She presents to him a tiny green stone. He unsheathes a throwing knife from a scabbard in response. Damakos is diligent in approaching her. He doesnโ€™t know what else is in that bag of hers. There can be anything in there. The Tiefling engages in his more threatened regiment.

His voice raises to a firm tone โ€œOpen your palms. Raise both hands where I can see themโ€ he demands, โ€œSlowly step outside of the room while you are still facing me. Do not make any sudden movements. Do not try anything I have not instructed you to doโ€.

At the same time, he carefully follows her, maintaining enough distance to throw the knife at her head should the human try anything. "If you don't want to see any blood. You will do as I say".

Tsukasa scowled and held the leather rope around her fingers as she opened her hands and held them in the air. She very much disliked being told what to do. But, it seemed as though she did not have a choice in the matter this time. She slowly backed away, looking behind herself a couple of times to make sure that she was not about to run into anything.

It was then, that Tsu realized she had left her bag in his room. Wonderful. There was no way that she could get it now. But maybe... she could sneak in sometime tonight? Na, it was too risky. This fellow was very serious about people NOT entering his room. Maybe he could be persuaded to get it for her?

Tsukasa nods towards her bag, โ€œForget itโ€ sneers Damakos in response. โ€œYou can get your bag in due time. I need to ask you a series of questions. I want a direct answer. Do not lieโ€. So begins the Tieflingโ€™s interrogation regiment. The first thing that manages to catch his eyes, apart from the mask is the piece of leather rope wrapped around the fingers of her open palm.

He points to it, "What is that supposed to be? Show me what exactly that leather rope is attached to and place it on the ground. Detach the rope from your finger and kick it away from me. Keep your hands where I can see them and move slowly".

His interrogation continues. Escalated to the point in which he bombards her with questions.

"Who are you? What are you doing here? Why are you here? What is your business? What do you want? What are you looking for? Where have you come from? What is your relationship to the owner here? Do you know the owner? Did you receive an invite as well?"

It is dangerously unreasonable, but he must see if his suspicions are correct.

Tsukasa was surprised by this man's mannerisms. He seemed to be very on edge, and that worried her a bit. Maybe he had been badly abused or something along those lines? From past experiences, Tsukasa knew that those kinds of people were quick to move and could be very dangerous, so, she came to the conclusion that she would do whatever he told her to... within reason...

Tsukasa very slowly untangled the leather string from her fingers and set it on then ground. She then kicked it softly to him. "It's just a very interesting stone.... I found... I figured giving it to you would prevent you from killing me... you know... a kind of peace offering..."

Before Tsukasa had a chance to even think she was smothered with questions.

"Well... im Tsukasa... I don't have a last name, im an orphan. I came here off of the streets to live. I do not want anything from you... I was looking for a room to settle into... I did not know that anyone was in here. I am sorry to have disturbed your peace... I will leave as soon as you let me. No I do not know the owner and no, I did not receive an invite. This is a good thing only because he has not managed to spot any visible weapons on her. With both hands in the air, she is unable to reach for any concealed ones. The concealed ones made him keep his distance.

His eyes scan up and down for anything odd or suspicious. When she rolls the stone over to him, he ignores his own curiosity to address her. โ€œWell Tsukasa, your willingness to cooperate is a peace offeringโ€ he enunciates. โ€œThe longer you cooperate. The longer you liveโ€.

Ironically, he takes her origin as an orphan roaming the streets at face value. Most Tieflings tend to live like that due to being called hell spawns or half-fiends and such. Her body language, though restricted helps to confirm it. It evokes some sympathy for her.

Damakos steps backwards significantly. โ€œStep into the room and keep your hands where I can see them. Walk towards the bed, face it and do not touch the bag on your way inโ€ he demands.

โ€œApology accepted. I will leave so that you may settle into this room peacefully. Additionally, I apologize for the hostility. This is just business, nothing personalโ€.

Tsukasa let out a light sigh of relief. Things were going to be okay. She did as she was told and kept her hands in the air as she walked over to the bed. She faced the bed and did not look back over her shoulder. She was pretty sure that he would do what he said and go away, but if he tried anything else, she was ready to bite.

Tsukasa felt a sneeze coming. her nose tickled and she tried to hold back, but she couldn't... her nose scrunched under the mask and she let out violent sneeze.

"Ewww..." She hadn't had a chance to remove her mask. Now she would have to wash it because of the saliva. Great. She had no back-ups either. Most of all, she hoped she hadn't just jumped the crap out of Damakos.

Damakos carefully circled his way towards the door, keeping the knife pointed in Tsukasaโ€™s direction. He squats down, picks up the tiny green stone and discards it into one of his pouches. She did offer it to him, and it sparked his curiosity. Though he places the stone away, she sneezes; it startled him but not enough to provoke an attack.

True to his word, the Tiefling slowly backs out of what is now Tsukasaโ€™s room. He confirms his exit by uttering โ€œGoodbyeโ€ before closing the door, leaving the human to get herself together. He makes his way down the hall, watching frantically for anyone else.

Tsukasa was finally able to relax once the door was closed. Damakos was certainly a strange fellow, but Tsukasa admired his ability to fend for himself... he certainly had her scared! She took off her mask and threw it on the bed. Her scars were hurting and they itched too. She grumbled as she picked at the bits of stitching and scabs that lined part of her face. Of course, they would never completely heal so long as she fiddled with them... but they just itched sooo much.

After a few minutes of bothering her face she laid down on the bed and dozed off into a light sleep.
