Introduction
The Setting
The Empire of Ríše is a civilised (for this, read oligarchic and cut-throat) place, split into five provinces and sprawling around the Caprican sea, a tropical ocean whose coasts support trading cities and nations.
A relatively young power on the world stage, her disciplined Legions and the Dark Fleet of her Navy have enabled her to grab land and power at a rate alarming to other nations, leaving her, at the last expansion, one of the largest powers about the Caprican sea. They regard it more as ‘civilising’ the barbarians and recalcitrant areas than conquer and pillage – indeed, their Legions make a point of capture rather than kill; more slaves for the markets in the Imperial City. Integration, not annihilation, is the Rŭsean doctrine.
Rebellion and internal resistance are relatively low, although persistent in certain areas and centres mainly around class discrepancies. They honour a code of warfare meant to reduce casualties and give opportunity for peaceful surrender.
Their Sun Court is of mixed races, populated by any of power and wealth, none barred (at least in law, if not in custom), and swirling with plot, intrigue and plays for power. While the society as a whole (and, publicly, the Imperial Court) honours truth, justice, mercy, unity and conquest, the Court truly focuses on personal glory, vanity, greed and power, and is not nearly so scrupulous about its methods of obtaining its desires.
The centrepiece of the glorious Empire is its glittering Imperial Capital, a sprawling metropolis in the tropical Home County, and where much of the RP will take place. It is a hive of intrigue and machination, feuds and seething arguments, red sins where a noble’s word is law, a decadent city revelling in it all, with the spectre of war very far away indeed.
The Opening Story
The glorious Empire of Ríše is currently at war, and has been for some time. The Empress, despite her five consorts, has thus far been unable to conceive a child, leading many to write her off as barren and going instead to court the most powerful noble Houses, one of which would surely ascend to the Peacock Throne if the imperial family died out. Naturally, this does not sit well with the Empress, and so she resolved to make her mark on history in a different way; if she could not bear children, she’d bear to Ríše great glories and new lands instead.
To that end, then, the Legions of Ríše armed and armoured their regiments, the Dark Fleet readied their ships, the fortresses on the Long Border prepared to sally forth and the cavalry saddled up their horses, Rŭsean forces streaming across the borders and biting deep into other nations, sending back caravans of slaves and the spoils of war.
It isn't going as well as might be expected; a lot of the other nations are wary of Ríše anyway, and the grand Legions are meeting rather more resistance than they anticipated, not to mention the Dark Fleet having a lot of problems with the Sairish corsairs.
Rather closer to home, there is change in the air. Lordly House Montclair’s patriarch has finally died, leaving the way clear for his young heir to seize the reins of power. Driving and ambitious – and a dab hand with the poison-bottle – he is a threat to all those that have profited from House Montclair’s decline, House Derik especially.
Officers from the war fronts are slinking back into the Imperial Capital as autumn draws to a close in the other provinces, none of them wishing to explain to the Empress why the crushing advance of Imperial Ríše has ground to a halt, hoping to plan their offensives in the Imperial College of War and get out of the city at the first touch of spring on the fronts, before they become embroiled in the seething politics of the capital.
The fat, corrupt priesthoods of the Fane are also in for a nasty shock – tired of their blatant corruption, a new church, a new religion, has emerged in the shadows, stealthily gaining converts and connections, soon to shock the old order from its complacency, and possibly topple it altogether.
And of course, as ever, the dark Order of the Eclipse waits in the wings, sharpening its knives and restocking its poison-bottles, ready and willing to remove any inconvenient obstacles from the paths of those able to pay.
It is into this morass of conflicting agendas and factions that anyone who is anyone in Ríše must plunge headlong, seizing chance and opportunity, lest they sink into obscurity.
The Rules of Ríše
1. This is a literate roleplay. By personal definition, that means I require good grammar and spelling. I don't expect perfection, but things should be proper overall. Additionally, kindly type your RP posts in the third person, past tense (eg. She went to the store. She bought some eggs.).There is no minimum post length; I truly don't care if you post one paragraph or ten as long as your post does what it needs to do. I want quality over quantity.
2. You may play more than one character as long as you can handle them. Standard rules with NPCs apply.
3. It should go without saying, but there is to be no godmoding (playing a perfect character who always wins, is never hurt, etc.) or controlling another's character without the player's permission. That just ruins the game for everyone; it’s not on, chaps and chapettes.
4. Please use the skeleton below. Bear in mind it is only a skeleton, and can be expanded if you like, but I do expect all the fields below to be filled in.
5. Any OOC chat in IC areas is to be posted in double brackets/parentheses/etc. to distinguish it from IC speech. Please keep your OOC conversations to the OOC thread as much as possible.
6. The RP will take place via thread, because we are all in different time zones.
7. This isn’t a rule so much as a head’s up. There will likely be a lot of OOC planning and communication in this RP, so it would be in everyone’s best interests to watch the OOC thread! If you have ideas for great events, send me a PM.
8. Romance is allowed (within the boundaries of the site rules, of course), but it's not mandatory. Characters of all genders and orientations are acceptable – Ríše isn’t all that concerned about what you get up to in the bedroom, so long as you don’t wake the city doing it.
The Character Skeleton
- Code: Select all
Name: – I feel this one’s pretty self-explanatory.
Age: – Again, if you don’t know how to fill this in, you probably shouldn’t be here.
Gender: – See above...
Title(s): – This is optional; what titles or ranks (or both) does your character hold?
Style: – Again optional and linked to Titles – how is your character addressed?
Physical Description: – What does your character look like?
Personality: – Are they a sweet, loveable person, a charming rogue or a complete bastard?
History: – What events have shaped your character’s life up to the present?
Faction(s): – What factions are they a member of, if any?
Profession: – What does your character do for a living? Do bear in mind that aside from entering politics, the army or the navy, the nobility don’t tend to have jobs. They certainly wouldn’t be rank-and-file soldiery, in any case.
Quirks and Other Information: – Any other little titbits you’d like to put in, that perhaps don’t merit an entire section to themselves. Optional.
If confused, take a look at Larsus Montclair for an example.
NB: It would be a good idea to take a look at the Reference Guide location , if you're interested. Most of the information there is not essential, just useful to refer to.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 8 authors

It was clear to her that what she asked from the new "Lieutenant Marshal" was truly impossible to be achieved in such a restricting time line. A scholar is not needed to assess her request to be far from reality. Although, she had every intention to have it accomplish regardless the difficulties it can offer. Personally, she had raised the same point that Kimber has given her to the Empress. Aurelia simply pushed it away and inclined her to not fail her. It was a fact that she would do anything for her older sister despite any circumstances. However, this was a war that involved many lives. She could not have her subordinates recklessly walked into enemy lines without calculated tactics and the blessings of luck on their side. Everything must be thoroughly contemplated upon.
"I know that it is impossible. However, the Empress is getting impatient. Despite that, I would like you to go on your evaluations and present it to me as soon as it is finished. I have every intention of joining in this campaign personally."
Rosalie placed her hands in under her chin as the fingers were intertwined with each other. Her sapphire blue eyes gazed at Christian who she respected in skills and talents. Although, she knew the man understood the situation perfectly without her further explaining it. If it comes to worst, she would face the wrath of her sister alone. There was no need to have other people be pressured from the task issued upon her. However, she was certain that the front lines would be including her soon enough. This is one of the possible actions she can do.
"Yes, that is all. Thank you for the report. I would expect good things from your plans. You are free to go, Lieutenant Marshal."
After speaking her piece, she returned her gaze towards the heap of papers upon her desk. There were a lot of troubles plaguing her at the moment. However for now, she should focus her effort onto something that is in front of her. Preventing herself from sighing in front of her subordinate, she gave a shrug and the most embarrassing thing happened. Her body betrayed her specifically her stomach which growled. The Grand Marshal Imperialis only hoped that Kimber was already out of the door. But to her dismay, the man was yet to be out of her office as she blushed with humiliation.
"Uhm... Pardon me for that... Would you keep that as a secret between us?"
It is true that she may be a very important person in the empire and the army and being constantly admired due to her beauty and skills. However, the fact remains that she is still a human being and very adorable in the moment that she showed her weakness to others. After all, she is still young despite how mature she acts for the bravado of being a wonderful Grand Marshal Imperialis, Princess Royal and Coronet Regal. Rosalie had an awkward look upon her face that she only show before her sister and as of now in front of the new Lieutenant Marshal. It seemed that her day could only get worse.

One of the privileges of being a Marshal was truth. No other officer in the Legion could ever hope to hear the words "this is impossible" be uttered from the Grand Marshal's mouth. Only the select group of men and women who wore the cords of the Marshals would ever hear such a statement and even then it was a rare occurrence. Between them the word impossible was still one that was not spoken lightly.
Christian nodded and saluted, but as he turned to leave he heard the tell tale growl of a stomach that demanded food.
The Grand Marshal turned to see him still in the room, "Uhm... Pardon me for that... Would you keep that as a secret between us?"
It was the single most out of character thing he had ever seen from the Grand Marshal, not the growl of her stomach, but the look on her face at her last statement. He couldn't help but think she seemed almost cute, though he cut the thoughts down as quickly as they arose. It would do no good to have such idea's floating around his head about his superior. She was simply as human as the next person, though she was rarely aloud to act as such. Christian knew how hard it was to keep up appearances all the time, and was quite often glad that he was not bound so strictly to them. He nodded his vow of confidence on the matter.
"It will do my lady no good to fight a war on an empty stomach, even if the battle now is with quill and ink. I must advise a meal directly, ma'am." He had a feeling she would be in a mood to object so he added, "We would not deny our soldiers food on account of duty, I'll be damned if we deny our Grand Marshal food on account of paperwork."

It was one reason (or else, he liked to think as much...really, Ríše was just most convenient. There was a castle which he was allowed to live in, for example) he preferred tropical areas. There was very little wind or rain of the cold variety, and absolutely none of that ridiculous atrocity he'd heard about in places where the ample precipitation became cold enough to freeze and coat the ground. It was enjoyable, to say the least, and if he ever wavered on this point, he need only remember back to a time when he'd been forced to visit some distant relative, of whom he knew no more than name and station. Peter...Peter...well, okay. He didn't know the name, either.
In any case, this distant and mysterious relative lived in one of these mythical frozen-water regions, and at nine years old, Degan had loathed the whole ordeal. Granted, the chilly white blanket which had hidden the earth for the better part of his stay did clump together nicely, making for ideal projectiles when fooling about with his brothers and sisters. And he had discovered that if you removed your gloves--made of animal skin and lined with wool for warmth--and further compressed the lumpy bullet, they became hard like ice and struck your siblings with all the more force.
But the...what was it called now? Hell? No, no, hail. That was it...though the former seemed a much more fitting name--the hail which had assailed them at their temperature was something Degan would never forget. Even with the hood of his thick woolen cap pulled up over his ears, a cap resting snugly beneath that, the walnut sized balls of eyes pounded his skull relentlessly to the point where he thought he'd collapse under their tireless drumming.
It was rather like that now. There was no snow, no ice, no cold, and no protection from the tiny fists beating him over the head. But the ancient vendor was just as relentless and just as unforgiving.
"Madam!" Degan shouted, half in frustration, half because he was sure the torture was making him deaf, "For the umpteenth time, I am sorry! The crowd, you see--I was following a friend, and--Oh, Praeterra help me, alright! If you will just cease this damned assault, I will pay for your stall and all its contents, just STOP!"
The wizened woman seemed quite pleased with this, at once abandoning all semblances of senility. It was everything Degan had in him not to deliver the woman a blow or two of his own, maybe loosen one of the three remaining yellowed teeth which leered at him now. In any case, by the time the whole ordeal was over, Degan had felt he'd wasted a good portion of the day. And, of course, Kaysen was nowhere to be found.
"I swear, the girl can't stay put for more than two minutes at a time," he grumbled to himself, starting off through the crowd in the direction she'd been so insistent on before.
He wasn't surprised she'd left--patience was not her strong suit, at least not to his knowledge. It was strange that she had returned by now, though. The girl was independent, he had that much to say about her. But she also had a tendency to get bored quickly, and if that were the case, she'd have come back to find him, and together they would have...found another way to pass the time. But she hadn't returned yet, and it had been several minutes.
Which meant her current task was either important...or dangerous.
Degan frowned. He liked the prospect of neither.
He had long since suspected Kay was hiding something from him. He was neither offended, nor concerned. After all, considering her time spent with him, she had at least a double life. But he'd never suspected it was anything serious. He'd even toyed with the idea of her seeing another man, though he quickly forgot that idea. Accurate or not, it was nothing he wanted to think about.
But the way she'd acted when he'd found her today...the way she'd taken off through the crowd, insisting he keep his head down...
Degan, while perhaps a tad clumsy and careless at times, was not a fool. Coming from his family, he could not afford to be. He was ashamed and frustrated it had taken him this long to figure it out: Kaysen had been tailing someone. Who or why, he could not say. But if she were not back yet, it was either because she'd found her mark...or they'd found her.
All at once, he quickened his pace, ignoring Kay's earlier warning, straightening to his full height. Instantly, he was transformed, and people began moving out of his way. He didn't miss the looks he'd got from a few of them--he was not the first of his rank to come through these parts. Who had Kay been tailing, then? His concerned doubled, and when he could not find her after several minutes, he stopped the first street rat he could find, pressing a silver into the boy's grubby hand.
"You there," he said gruffly, keeping his eyes on the ever shifting crowd. "Did you see a woman walk by here? Red hair? Green eyes?"
The boy considered for a moment, then looked squinted up at Degan, studying the house tattoos, before smiling wanly and holding out a hand. "I can't say, sir. Don't remember, see?"
Degan clenched his jaw, just barely keeping himself from throttling the boy. Instead, he lifted another silver piece from his pouch and dropped at the boy's feet. "And now?"
The boy grinned again, nodding in earnest. "Ah, right, sir. I remember now. Lady like that came by here not ten minutes ago."
Degan started. "Where? Which direction did she go?"
The boy pointed through the throngs of people, to the western exit from the bazaar. "That way, sir. But you ought to know she wasn't alone."
Degan frowned. "Who was she with?"
The boy held out his hands, indicating a size Degan hoped was hyperbole. "A man, sir. One of the underground folk, and a large bloke at that. Carried her right over his shoulder, he did. She looked like she would be 'sleep for another fortnight, with any luck."
The instant of panic Degan felt was covered up by grim determination as he straightened without a word and headed back toward his estate. The man who'd taken Kay would pay the price of whatever cavalry Degan Montclair could round up.

Re: [OOC] Ríše: Within the Empire
the long boarder is basically in a constant state of war though its not a serious threat, more of a useful pain, it's main function is to keep the legions in a constant state of preparedness, and units are rotated into and out of it constantly. some for long periods of time (to actually handle the fighting) and some for shorter periods, these shorter periods are used to bring any forces that have been out of the field up to ready status since it is a prime location to drill and prepare the men to be in a fighting state of mind.

For the sake of argument that scale should read 0 - 100 - 200, in miles.

Re: [OOC] Ríše: Within the Empire
@ EbonDruid :: over all fine, I don't see it strange that the Empress would keep tabs on the families from time to time. No worries on slow posting, we've all got other problems to tend to out side of the internet.
@Butterfly Princess :: I noticed a location flaw in your post (I'm working on uploading a new map today that I will post here) the Silver Marches are in no danger of seeing action from the Roan States, the two are a good many miles apart (right around 800, almost two months average marching time) I realize that with out a map it's hard to know where everything lines up. I'm finalizing it now and will have it posted shortly.
