Introduction

The Supernatural Concealment and Investigation Organization Network.
Better known as S.C.I.O.N.
Once, in times gone by, known as The Order of the Scion of the Azure Moon.
But that's a bit of a mouthful and hard to shout when some lyco is trying to crush your trachea in a big meaty fist.
So, SCION it is.
Assuming you're a human, you will probably never have heard of it. You will most likely live out your entire life never openly encountering any trace of SCION, or its staff. And if you don't, you can probably consider yourself lucky; because if you have, you're either a very exceptional individual... or something statistically far more powerful is trying to murder you.
Possibly both.
SCION is a collaborative effort between a small section of humanity, and some of the major families of the sapient cryptid species, to both research supernatural species, and the enforce a...healthy distance between humanity, and the monsters out there in the world. It exists to keep things secret, and to keep both sides of the coin safe from destroying each other. (Previous instances where humans and cryptids have mixed in recent times has made things...tense at best. Think Witch Trials. Think, vampires buried alive with rocks stuffed into their mouths, think whole camps of human soldiers found mysteriously torn apart out in remote nordic woodland...that kind of stuff. )
It's the only place you're likely to find humans working alongside werewolves, vampires, the spirits of the dead. Brings a whole new meaning to the idea of workplace diversity, right?
Once upon a time, SCION worked for world governments, under their funding and protection. Branches all over the place. Then, came a sudden declaration to cut the funding, burn the records, and shut everything down. No more SCION anywhere. Gone. Finished. Obviously someone, someone very powerful wanted there to be no-one checking up on supernatural activity.
So, for 50 years, no SCION. Not a peep. Other things rush in to fill the power vacuum. Vampire clans. Wolf packs. And far darker things. Stories of a major demon on US soil filter through the rumour mill, though nothing is confirmed. Order remains... but that order is maintained through a large number of humans who see things they should not going 'missing' forever.
Then, about 10 years back, old members got a call from an untraceable number, where a female voice offered two things, an address, and a message. SCION would live again. A benefactor had left them enough funding to begin again from the ground up, this time as an independent entity, outside of government control. They could work once more...but this time they were alone.
Cut to the present, and SCION has climbed its way back into prominence in the supernatural community. They investigate, they research, they spy...and they bust heads..if need be. They carefully select members from all walks of life and (nearly) all species. Some are important for their skills and aptitude, some for their political position in the supernatural world...and some are simply people who can disappear and not be missed at all. All kinda have been given a new life within the SCION base.
So, the question is, are you ready to sign up?

There are many creatures within the supernatural world, and more subspecies than most would care to mention, but most tend to fall into the following categories:
Human
Humans. The most common of the sapient group. What they lack in magical ability they make up for in adaptiveness and ingenuity. Most have no idea about some of the things that take place around them. Those that do tend to not benefit from this knowledge. A human in that world is in a lot of danger. Unless of course they're one of those selected to join SCION.
In which case, they're probably in even more danger.
Vampire

Vampires. The children of the night. The nosferatu. The things of horror stories and teen romance novels the world over...but the truth of a vampires is both scary, and a bit sad.
Vampires were once humans, humans who had the venom of another vampire injected directly into their jugular vein so as to have it reach their heart almost immediately..and cause it to stop. It would remain stopped for about six hours as every cell in the host's body was infected with the curse, only to have it restart again slower and colder.
A vampire has a very low body temperature, and a naturally slow pulse. They have astonishing darkvision and very fast reflexes. Much like snakes, they are able to sense body heat through adapted cells beneath their skin, and additionally like snakes, they are able to snap out a set of very long, hollow canines from their upper jaw. These often snap out when a vampire is angry or threatened, as well as about to strike.
They are incredibly effective predators. Like mantids their appearance draws their prey, humans. Humans see them as uncommonly, if rather savagely beautiful, and tend to be drawn to them. This suits a vampire well. They must drink blood every few days in order to maintain good health. Without it they will begin to sicken and decay. Their cells will degenerate until they resemble a walking corpse and until their minds degenerate into animalistic madness.
Werewolf

Hungry like the wolf. The werewolf is another of the supernatural creatures that has permeated popular culture.
Like vampires, some werewolves were once ordinary humans, turned by the bite of one of the lycan kind. However, unlike vampires, a werewolf may have children, and as a result, the majority of werewolves around in the modern era were born never having known humanity. Born wolves tend to be stronger than those turned, and those from certain lines stronger still than that. This tends to make born-wolves a little...hung up on it.
A werewolf, most of the time, resembles a person. A born-wolf tends to be on the tall side, with an athletic build and something a little..scruffy about them. Males of the species tend to build muscle mass quite easily. All werewolves have a fast metabolism, a high body temperature, and a rapid pulse. They tend to display quite impressive strength even in human form, and this is greatly increased when they transform.
Transformation is a major part of a werewolf's life. By default, upon every full moon, as the last rays of sun disappear they will be hit by agonizing, blinding pain. Bones will snap and reform, organs will fail and warp. The werewolf will suffer a heart attack, multiple fractures, massive internal trauma and their skin will tear itself apart. By the end, they will be a new creature, a horrifying meld of human and beast with a wolf-like head and a hunched body, covered in thick fur.
Transformed, partly due to the beast instincts, and partly due to the immense trauma of transformation, werewolves become animalistic and vicious. They will attack most living things and act like a wild creature, causing destruction and chaos around them.
That is unless they are properly trained. Born werewolves will be put through rigorous training by their own pack. First of all mental preparation in order to maintain their goals in wolf form, and to not harm those on their own side. The second set of training they got through it using a focus to bring on the change outside the full moon. These 'forced' transformations can give them a needed edge in a fight, but are also very hard on a werewolf's body. To force a change whilst injured or unwell can easily kill the individual.
Sorcerer
Another who has known what it is to be human, most as they were often born of humans. A sorcerer is a mortal who has magic running through their veins. They are able to channel into the fundamental forces of nature and wreck things with it.
This tends to be a problem to an inexperienced caster, though. For many it may begin to trigger accidentally, fires starting, objects flinging themselves into walls, strange presences within the home. That sort of thing. Uncontrolled, the powers can be very dangerous, growing unchecked and unfocused they often end up lashing out at random, killing the caster or people around them.
A sorcerer can however, train and learn to manipulate their abilities to call upon the elements. Through this they can become very powerful, despite being physically unremarkable and as mortal as any regular man.
Fallen
An enigmatic form of cryptid, most Fallen with Scion were picked up directly from where they appeared. That is, Fallen appear to literally...fall. When you see footage of meteorites crashing to earth wreathed in flame. Not all of them are meteorites. Investigators will sometimes find, rather than shattered space rock in th e crater, a humanoid figure, smoking and blackened with burns, bones shattered and body twisted up like you might expect something that'd just rocketed out of the sky in a trail of flame to end up looking like.
It's pretty nasty...but is made quite a bit more nasty by the fact that they're nearly always alive after landing.
Most Fallen recovered by SCION have been comatose since their recovery, and offer little other than research material into the phenomenon. Those that have awoken, whilst more immediately useful, suffer from acute amnesia, and have no memory of their lives before they fell. Most however have appeared easy enough to deal with, and have often taken up posts within the organization.
All Fallen are very heavily scarred, and tend to not be too pleasant to look at, but often have quite gentle dispositions. Their touch has the odd ability of being able to relieve the pain and infer a sense of serenity upon those they make contact with, and as a result many have had success training as medics within the organization.
Demon
The final type of cryptid, and the only kind to have no known representation within SCION. A demon is an ancient manifestation of a primal darkness, and major demons exist to constantly scheme and plot and fight amoung themselves. Most will deal in 'blood pacts'; deals made with other creatures in return for something. Years of life, a first born son, years of servitude...a demon will deal in all such things, and chaos is something they thrive upon. Most demons would benefit greatly from SCION's failure.

There are plenty of types within SCION, all play a big role, and not all get along too well. Just some of these may include:
(These are not hard and fast 'roles', they more serve as writing prompts and suggestions. Other ideas are welcome!)
The Head- ????- Played by VitaminHeart - Oft-heard, never seen. The mysterious benefactor keeps an eye on her investment, and will often check in on her staff. No-one has met the Head in person, but as she is generally happy enough to allow them to work without micromanaging, few people show a lot of concern.
Scientist -Oren Kovalenko - Played by VitaminHeart - Always looking to dissect something, or connect someone up to machines and make notes, the Scientists are always trying to work out what makes people, and creatures, tick. Considering Miss Oren's general lack of interest in anyone's welfare, plenty of people are relieved that others exist to ensure that the research team do not do anything unethical.
The Barbarian - Kora Norrevinter - Played by VitaminHeart - Six and a half foot of screaming, fighting crazy, this werewolf has come from a bloodline of warriors stretching back to pre-roman tribes. A sort of doggy aristocracy, if you will. Bred for generations to be a warrior, it's evident that she's not really prepared for much else, including polite society. Enjoys death metal, cake, and punching stuff.
The Doc - Every places needs a Doctor. Someone to try and put everyone back together when things go bad. Preferably more than one. Even then, trying to keep everyone in SCION alive and kicking is a pretty full on job.
The Tech Even in a world of magic, you need someone that knows their way around modern tech. In a place with thousand year old vampires, and lycans who seem to think they're still in the viking era, someone needs to have some finesse around wires and screens.
The Old One After you've lived five hundred years, vampire society names you an 'Old One' and treats you with respect. This guy/gal could be ruling their own clan by now, but has instead taken up the good fight with SCION. How noble. Or suspicious.
The Rookie New blood in the old corpse. The rest have known each other for a few years. This one is pretty new. About to prove themselves? Or about to make it a very short career?
The Lore Expert - Immersed in the world of magic and monsters for so long, there's little he/she does not know. The go-to for questions regarding the spooky and mystical. Tends to be at odds with the researchers for that reason. They don't like stuff they can't explain off.
Fighters You need boots on the ground, people not afraid to bust some skulls when things turn ugly. These are your people for that. They're going to fight the good fight to keep the peace...even if their average career tends to run short and end messily.

SCION tends to keep plenty of data on their staff (all above board of course.)

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 15 authors
βWell, first of all, hello Silas," he greeted. "I'm glad that I didn't catch you at a bad time, because, well, it turns our cryptid isnβt that...late after all. She apparently just hopped right back to life while Oren was trying to identify her. Caused quite the scene, from what I heard.β A laugh, as if the event was something just as normal as a drunken fight between two of their fighters.
βThereβs been a few other...things that have happened, as well. Namely, Fel refusing to heal her in spite of her injuries. She acted completely out of character- just turned around and left her to die. Fel, of all people!β Madison paused, letting his words sink in, before continuing.
βAnd then Oren was mentioning how it seemed like she- the cryptid- had been turned. Itβs just been quite the day, really. Our cryptidβs doing fine and all, but itβll be some time before I get the chance to actually talk to her, and since youβre at base, I thought you might be able to look through the database and help us identify her species with what we found. You wouldnβt mind, right?β
While Madison doubted there would be much opposition to the idea- given that Silas had apparently been looking into potential identifications when he picked up- it was only courteous to make sure.
Alexander sat in a chair in the corner of the room had his eyes shut as he focused on his other sense, more specifically he was paying attention to Arc's body temperature to try and gauge how far the transformation had gone. There were other methods to try and determine the current stage he was in, but for a vampire that easiest method was body temperature. Alex knew Arc would be out for a while still, but he was good to check his condition. Opening his eyes Alex took the blood bag that he brought in earlier and set up an IV line.
After having set the line up he went to wash his hands. It was during this that he remembered he had a phone call to make. Swiftly drying his hands he pulled his phone out of pocket and began to slowly work the thing to make a call back to the base's tech team. After waiting what seemed an age for the ringing to stop he smiled hearing a voice on the other end of the line. " Hello... could you get someone to pull the bank statements of all employees who work for the morgue in York city?...I need it for an investigation... Thank you" Alexander hung the phone up cutting the woman off on the other end. A money trail was always a good thing to follow and if this cult and some of the spies of the payroll there would be something to work off... though with his skills it might be better to let one of the others look through the records.
Leaving Arc in his room Alexander left to go join everyone else as he was certain Mr Avalon would want to have that talk soon. It was as he was making his way towards the main room for that purpose he spotted that back of Christina, though he was almost thrown since she had her hair down. " Christina... How are you feeling?" Alexander asked softly, in a tone that felt sincere
β¨β¨He thumbed through the pages, searching for something specific that he had previously overlooked in his searching. βI was thinking, or well, had been suspecting some kind of hydra or Scilla-type cross, given the blood color. It was very characteristically sea-monster-ish, in nature. Or perhaps some victim of the aforementionedβs venom, or a wyvern-bite, maybe butβ¦Ah! Hereββ β¨β¨His hand paused in itβs searching, holding open a page with an image of an old cuneiform sketching. βIf Felβs averse to itβ her, sorryβ If a Fallen has a grief with someone, it may be that something very oldβs gotten a hold on her. Send me whatever you have.β β¨β¨
Silas slid the book so that it sat directly under the desk lamp, and placed the lizard from his pocket on the page to hold his place. The little green animal stretched, looked up, and then sunk down under the heat to bask and nap. β¨β¨
βIβll do some more digging," Silas said, starting back toward the shelves only to be stopped by the length of the phone cord and fumble back a step, "But watch the umβ¦ The new cryptid? The mystery guest? Whatever weβre calling her, watch her. Carefully. If Fel thinkβs sheβs bad news, I wouldnβt overlook it.β
"Contrary to popular belief I'm not the Wicked Witch of the West, I just have a very low tolerance level for other people's bullshit."
She finished taping up the dressing across the cryptid's torso.
"And I appreciate the fact that you mostly just keep your mouth shut and get on with what you're supposed to do."
She pulled off her gloves, now veneered in glistening green, deposited them in a biohazard bin by the door. The vampress then made her way through the rooms of the safehouse, until she managed to track down her target.
"Avalon." she called from the doorway.
"I'm formally requesting that I get taken off the crew for this mission. I have specifically, specifically requested that I am not required to do field work. Whilst that farce that just occurred probably only qualifies as fieldwork in the vaguest sense of the word, it is more than enough to convince me that I want nothing to do with any of this. I was hired as a scientist. To do science. Not to babysit field agents. There are numerous other things that I could be doing which would be far more productive to the organization and far less infuriating to me, and since people seem convinced that I'm lazy and incompetent and have nothing to offer, I'm sure no-one is going to be overly concerned when I leave and get back to the werewolf research."
βWe actually had to patch her up right now- poor thing was in tatters when we got to her- and, well, while I didnβt exactly get a chance to take any pictures or anything like that, I did get a good view of her anatomy. Of course, youβll probably want to speak more to Oren about that, butβ¦β He took a moment to delete what he supposed was a fairly unnecessary piece of information, before changing his mind and keeping it.
βAt any rate, weβre certainly dealing with something very interesting here. I donβt have all the little details of what happened during the mission and all, but Derrickβs bringing us all together in a bit so everyone can explain. He actually had to put the safe house on lockdown for now, so with any luck I can learn the rest, but for now...there.β With a flourish, Madison pressed down upon the enter key, sending the bright blue loading bar flashing upon the screen for a few moments before fading.
Upon the document was a general synopsis of what he had heard, as well as Madisonβs own observations; how he overheard the apparent involvement of a wolf pack, the resilience of the cryptid, her almost reptilian eyes...Any little tidbit of information that he could think up, the vampire had added onto the document.
Logging out of his account, Madison stepped away from the desk and took a moment to properly grip his phone. βYou should be getting it soon, but, again, Iβll go ahead and update you when things are properly settled. Can you call in, by any chance? You could just listen in to the whole thing.β
