The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 5 authors
The paladin was relieved by the finality of the battle. At least they could be sure the task was done. Satogi gave the spirit a proper burial prayer as it vanished to send it straight into the starlight. With that done Satogi took all the items off of the body and since it couldn't be buried he engulfed it into light and grabbed the same kind of container Lance was using, and contained the ashes of the fallen champion within it. He set this on a shelf and laid a prayer of protection over it before moving to get Koko on his shield for easier transportation. Koko remained passed out for awhile longer, resting out the encounter in a deep sleep. Satogi lifted the shield with Koko from just the straps in one hand, as he had great strength.
He was more likely to complain about his broken chest-plate since he hated being without a full suit of armor. He was now only wearing a light grey colored kimono top ripped where the sleeves would be, with blood stains in places and rips all over the edges. He looks like a retreating veteran with a teenagers face. Satogi lit the inner part of the shield around Koko to surround him in healing light that aided in his energy regeneration. It didn't take them long to make it to a safe room, rather close to the stairs up to the next floor.
The setting changes from The Tower, 3rd Floor to The Tower
As Lance and Satogi carried Koko to a room to rest, he couldn't help but notice that Satogi had seen quite a few battles while in here. He'd set himself up as a distraction for the sake of everyone's livelihood and hadn't even so much as grumbled about it. The price of his actions were even more visible than before. Lance would be sure to make it up to him.
When they got into the safe room, Lance set him down and reached into Koko's pack, pulling out the Vial of Life. A realization had come upon him while they traveled and he was going to act upon it. He turned to Satogi, giving him the vial.
"Here," he told the paladin,"It's a Vial of Life. Only give it to Koko should the two of you run into some trouble while you guys rest. I'm going to find you some armor." He turned to leave the room, but stopped himself as he realized that it wouldn't do any good not telling where he was going. He looked back at the two. "I'm going to try and find the room where we battled the crystals. I remembered we didn't open that chest that lay in there. Perhaps it'll carry armor for you or something that'll help us all. He took one foot out and had one more afterthought. He pulled out his worn golden shield and tossed it to the Paladin. "Here, use this in case your shield falters on you in a future battle. It's kind of damaged, but it's better than nothing, right? Besides, who knows what kind of magical properties it may have."
Without an answer, he left the two, sprinting through the corridors and rooms to find the place he'd fought the crystal. While he was fairly good at navigation, being a nomad, he wasn't perfect, especially when it was dark. He soon found himself lost somewhere on the third floor.
"Ah, that isn't good," Lance mumbled to himself when he realized this. Slowing to a walk, he panted as he tried to look for landmarks that would point him in the right direction. He must have missed one while he was running.
He rounded a turn and stopped in his tracks. At the end of this hallway appeared two beings silhouetted be the glow of what appeared to be a shrine inside. Perhaps there may be an item in there that could help Satogi and Koko. But he was worried about how the two would react to his presence. One looked graceful and deadly, like a viper, while the other's large shambling form could prove a great deal of strength to battle against.
"Um, excuse me?" he called out to the two, hoping that his decision would lead to salvation rather than defeat.
The setting changes from The Tower to The Tower, 4th Floor
The mage rose from his meditating pose and continued his search for... well, anything really. Most doors he tried were locked with intricate mechanics, with odd pieces that made no sense to him.
However, when he found the trading post, he was rather excited to put his gold to use.
The archdemon standing at the small shop greeted him with a grand smile on his face. Sanul, believe it or not, recognized the bastard; one of the beasts that his cult prepared sacrifices for from time to time. (Sanul gets a 50% discount from demonic merchants.)
In stock today was a Black Rune for 210g, a Tome for 370g, an Elixir of Animation (Give any 1 entity life) for 420g and an artifact (holy crap!); an Orb of Rebirth (die instantly, and revive a new man; your stats are reset, giving you the ability to completely flip your character over!) for 5380g.
Sanul bought the Elixir with all the money on him (-210g) and... wanted the rest. He knew that the guy behind the counter had one, so he asked for a Sacrificial Knife. With little remorse, he shoved it through his arm, letting gold bleed from the large hole left on his limb (-3 Attack until wound heals). With that self-inflicted injury, he coughs up the bloody, scab-covered coin to buy a Black Rune.
His trading done, he went ahead and wandered about, looking for something to kill, or maybe some more coin to buy that Tome he'd seen.
The setting changes from The Tower, 4th Floor to The Tower, 3rd Floor
Four obsidian obelisks rise from the stone floors of the Tower. Each stone etched with the name of a long forgotten hero, they each expel a Wraith; ravenous spirits with a thirst for murder.
Two Wraiths assault the duo standing at the shrine, while the other two fly towards Lance.
The obelisks rose and Lance immediately thought he was going to have to fight those things. But the two Wraiths that flew out of the obelisks were considerably worse. Spirits were not a favorable opponent for Lance as he couldn't really damage them with something physical and his shards were more or less ineffective. He would either have to consume one of his more powerful shards or bolt out of there.
Without hesitation, he ran, apologizing quickly in his head and deciding should he run into them again, he'd make it up to them.
Once again, he ran as fast as he could through corridors, hoping the Wraiths weren't in pursuit. Left, right, right, left, left...the landmarks flew by as he went on. Suddenly, something caught his eye. The vines! Lance remembered passing them when he'd first arrived on the floor. He knew where to go from here.
Before he knew it, he was back where he fought the crystals. Sure enough, the chest was still there. Quickly opening it, he knew he was fast enough to have outran the Wraiths thus far, but it might not be long before they caught up.
A Sentient Knife floated out of the chest, and immediately started to shove itself into Lance, stabbing violently at every opening he could find.
The two Wraiths following him refused to give up their pursuit. Once they reached Lance again, the two spirits melded together, creating a larger Ghoul.
The newly formed Ghoul draws his weapon; massive claws, sharper than sharp. With a bit of pullback, the spirit swipes at Lance.
The setting changes from The Tower, 3rd Floor to The Tower
Lance was purely shocked at the initial stab, the adrenaline of his previous encounters blinding him from the surprise attack. His first parry was flimsy from confusion and the knife narrowly missed, sliding just left of his torso. He rolled right to gain distance, but the knife was there once again. At least he was in a better position to swing at the floating object, striking it with more force this time and watching the knife fly a few feet back. The blade circled around and aimed for the middle of his chest again. A downward defensive swing knocked the Sentient Blade to the floor and Lance proceeded to smash his blade downward, cutting the blade in two.
Wraiths! Lance turned to find...well one ghoul with his arm reared back, ready to swipe. Another clumsy parry and Lance was on the ground, rolling backwards. Standing up to meet the newly formed ghoul, he looked for a way out, but the ghoul blocked the entrance. He'd have to get around him somehow.
(Edited)
Satogi had to carry Koko in his shield all the way back to the staircase. He took a little longer because of the weight but he soon arrived only to see a large ghoul attacking Lance, who didn't look too good at the moment. Satogi set Koko aside and took up his sword in two hands. He charged his sword and his soul with his oath retaken, his skin regaining the white tattoo-like markings he had used before. With his eyes aglow with pure starlight and his sword shining a blinding light, he lunges at the ghoul with the aim to run it through. He gains additional angelic wings of light on his back that propel him forwards, made from familiars of light attached to his holy aura. "You cannot escape the starlight of faith! Die foul creature!"
With his lunge, whether hit or miss, Satogi lands on the far side of the room as his holy energy quickly burns off into nothing. He looks drained and rests after the powerful attack. With every other cough more blood seeps out of his mouth and into his hand. It seems he cannot use his holy energy again for awhile. (Power Burn: Heart Damage = 3/10)
The Sentient Knife left behind a Possessed Hilt. The Ghoul left behind a Vial of Experience (Three of these can be used to make a Draught of Experience, which grants +1 to a random stat.).
As Satogi recovered, one of Sanul's Mirror Images nonchalantly walked up towards them. "Well, well, well. Look at what we have here." The double glared at the paladin. "You've seen better days, haven't you?" He focused his gaze to Lance next. "You. Are you from the Commonmen? Because you don't seem to belong to my faction or his," he declared, referencing Satogi and his religious customs. Finally, he noticed Koko, still weak and frail. The tiniest spark of compassion lit up in "Sanul", as he continued: "Oh, dear. Tsk, tsk, tsk, you poor thing. He looks like he's on the brink of it!"
The copy drew his scepter and blasted Koko with a pulse of invigorating essence. He'd wake up instantly, with no fear of Sanul.
"Don't think that just because I'm nice to HIM, I'll be nice to YOU." That being said, he flipped Satogi off before starting to leave.
The setting changes from The Tower, 3rd Floor to The Tower
"Thanks," Lance muttered through his panting, trying to recover from the long sprint he'd just endured. Looking around at the remnants of the knife and the ghoul, he knew the Vial of Experience was something to take. As for the Possessed Hilt...well like the name suggests, it wouldn't do much good trying to stab people with the lower half of the knife.
A calm and collected voice suddenly approached and Lance turned to find...well somewhat of a counterpart to Koko. The mage studied each of them considerably, clearly demonstrating a more favored eye towards Koko rather than towards Satogi. He blasted something at Koko, but somehow Lance knew it wouldn't hurt him. Satogi on the other hand...he was worried for his sake as it appeared the two had some history.
But, the mage seemed to leave the paladin alone, giving him nothing more than an insulting finger and proceeded to leave.
"Wait!" Lance called to him, "Who are you?" His aura left a mysterious undertone to his stature that somehow drew Lance towards him. And yet...it was almost like he wasn't there at all...
"Who am I? I am Sanul. The Seventh Councilman of the Black Heavens Cult; a member of the Non-Believer Clan."
Sanul really doesn't give a shit about titles, but for the sake of humor...
"I'm the 953rd challenger of the Tower in my cult. I've been sent to reach the top to claim the Realms as mine, as stated in the old scrolls. However, seeing that the highest a challenger has reached was... 500 years ago? Made it to the 532nd floor. Truly, a god incarnate. He even discovered something incredible; when he slayed the 100th champion at the 500th level, the Creator himself came down to congratulate him, and tell him that he was HALFWAY THERE. Halfway, at 500 trials. 500 more awaited him, therefore a thousand trials stand before us all. Too bad the man perished before he could finish the trials; his last message was 'Fuck my fucking fuck, I'm fucking fucked AAAAAH-'. A shame, really."
Sanul knew he'd probably never accomplish such an impossible task. But hey; if it was easy, the Creator would have given up the Realms ages ago, right?
"Now, if you don't mind, I have better things to waste my breath with."
His statement complete, the clone began to leave again.
The setting changes from The Tower to The Tower, 3rd Floor
Satogi slowly recovered from his attack and stood, not caring if the man left as long as they were not harmed. Little interest of his was had in the history of the champion, and he instead helped Koko to his feet. Koko himself felt very refreshed from his nap and seemed chipper enough to want to proceed with the Tower. "Next floor then, Satogi? Lance? The paladin sighed but decided to take point with his glowing shield lighting the way. The two adventurers waited for Lance to catch up before heading to the next floor.
The setting changes from The Tower, 3rd Floor to The Tower
As the trio climbed the steps and proceeded to the next floor, Lance contemplated Sanul's position. The 532nd floor was the highest floor any mortal being had ever reached...and he'd came from the same group that Sanul had. Now, the task of traversing a thousand floors would be enough to weed out the happy-go-lucky adventurer from the serious competitors. But had Lance been trained the same way Sanul had, with the knowledge that he was the 953rd adventurer, the best of them could barely pass the halfway point, and the fact that every single one of them had been trained in presumably a similar fashion, Lance would have very low hopes upon entering the tower as to reaching the top.
But that was just it, wasn't it? Lance had been purposefully trained the way he had for that reason: to take a different approach to surmounting the insurmountable.
And Lance was going to do it. No matter what it took. He'd reach the top because he had no doubt he could.
The question was: where did Sanul find his solace? What gave him his strength to continue?
Perhaps he was doing it for the glory, like Lance. But from the sarcastic tone he'd implied while introducing himself, it seemed like he wasn't one for titles. Maybe he preferred the rewards. The riches that awaited those who reached the top were not tossed aside like a worn pair of boots so easily. But money didn't seem suited for his character either. Maybe he was doing this for the Black Heavens Cult involuntarily. He didn't know how the organization worked, but maybe it was by luck. Who knew?
Suddenly his head was slightly dizzy from the weight of it all.
It seemed like everyone he'd met had some kind of important background behind them. Sanul had the legacy of his cult to propel him. Satogi had his family's legacy. Hell, even Koko had the Magenta line that Lance admitted he vaguely knew about.
He had no background to live up to. No glorified goal staring him in the face, beckoning him onward. He had nothing.
And that's why he felt like he could do this...because no one in his lineage had even attempted.
Reaching the fourth floor, he looked at Satogi and realized his quest had failed. "I'm sorry, Satogi. I tried to find armor for you, but I failed. I had come across some interesting place that looked like it carried some items of worth, but the wraiths drew me off before I could. Besides, it looked like a woman and an orc had gotten there first." He then noticed Koko, who looked rather sharp. "Hey, Koko. Good to see you up and moving." He was still surprised to know that he cared about the boy's safety.
The setting changes from The Tower to The Tower, 4th Floor
Soon enough, he was met by a Corrupt Paladin; a priest materialized to defend this damned spire.
Sanul bares his teeth, and gets ready to get his hands dirty...
He takes a stance, and casts a weak version of Stone Skin, not petrifying him, but hindering him nonetheless. (-5 Speed, +5 Defense)
With a thud following every footstep, he charges the paladin and makes his fist meet the enemy's face, multiple times. He ends up delivering a strong combo; not dealing much damage, but breaking the warrior's stance.
The priest counterattacks with a long rapier, but it fails to pierce the hardened shell coating the mage.
Drawing his scepter and taking some steps back, Sanul mutters some chants under his breath, and Mind Blasts him, leaving his opponent crippled and defenseless.
"Time to go in for the kill."
Sanul steps up to his attacker and shoves his fingers into his eye sockets, leaving his opponent screaming in agony. The sound was music to his ears. Wanting to get it over with, the mage followed up his brutal strike with a fatal swing from his scepter, caving the paladin's face in.
Pleased with his slaughter, Sanul finished him off with a single gesture; closing his fist and shattering the man's soul. With a bit of pause, his new friend arose.
The caster took the guard's Stone Key and continued exploring with his new slave. (Stone Skin wears off)

"What an asshole."
Elyzabeth armed herself appropriately. She'd tangled with the semi-corporeal before, and hoped that this particular variety wasn't sword proof. Gakgak lifted the lantern to illuminate the shades of evil and death incarnate. "Rakshat."
"Yeah, I was thinking that, too."
Gakgak scratched more symbols in the air that Elyzabeth ignored while she called on Elsir for "Guidance, or divine judgement, or whatever the hell you're good for." Her relationship with her patron was not like that of most religiously motivated warriors. As unmotivated as her prayers were, they were either answered, or she was extremely lucky with the first swipe. Maybe specters were scared of her, maybe her swords held some unknown and unimaginable power. Either way, the first one she hit dissipated. Cool.
Gakgak put the lantern down and stepped in front of it, casting the other attacker in shadow. "Dammit, Gakgak!" Elyzabeth retreated behind him so it would pass back into view or the goblin would move, but rather than getting out of the way, Gakgak walked directly into the creature while screaming. Elyzabeth lowered her swords and watched with confusion. "...what the f-?"
Gakgak sat and crossed his mishapen arms, wrapping his overlarge hands around his thin biceps. "I... did you kill it?"
"Grak!"

As he leaves the small hoard behind, he notices the door locks behind him. A bit curious to what happened, he looks in through the small window on the door... and finds the room restocked, with another small pile of currency.
Odd. He decides to keep searching for beasts to kill, considering how long he should camp about this floor if it brings him enough currency for a bit of supplies.
In his search for enemies, he found a distinct lack of them. Instead he discovered an interesting room near the stairs to the 5th floor: a room covered in the purest white tile, stainless and unstainable. The mage squinted and saw glyphs of protection coating the walls and floors...
Was this a safe room?
Huh. Seeing as though he had nothing better to do, he projected himself upon a Mirror he had left behind at his cult's temple, and let them know of his progress.
(This room is completely safe; no enemies can enter, and no violent intentions can be carried out inside.)

He currently has 7 items available: a Guardian Mini-Cannon (Inflicts an impact of 25 Attack to a single target, single-use) for 825g; a Desecrated Rosary (Damage Resistance in exchange for -9 Faith; minor injuries are negated, criticals become minor and mortal impacts become critical) for 1240g; a White Gem (Grants a random +1 to equipment when applied) for 275g; a Duplication Scroll (Create an identical copy of an item or entity) for 525g; a Ring of Consecration (Reduce enemy Intellect by 3) for 725g; an Armorer's Toolkit (Allows crafting of armor on the spot, at the cost of resources) for 1525g; and finally, an artifact, a Mana Shield (Grants 1 Defense for every 2 Intellect the user has; drains mana to block attacks!) for 3640g.
Seeing his clients were a bit short on money, he offered them his Sacrificial Knife. With it, they could shed some blood and generate the funds needed to purchase something.
Koko shall gain a permanent +1 Intellect if he decides to "deal with the devil"; Satogi shall lose a permanent -1 Faith if he offers his life force.
The merchant has no interest to buy their trinkets; he does not trade, he shall only take cash... or blood.

The setting changes from The Tower to The Tower, 4th Floor
As the trio pressed on, he felt kind of bad for the orc and woman that he'd left to battle the other two wraiths. Hopefully, they defeated the wraiths and did so without a scratch. If they did, they deserve everything on that Shrine. Lance figured if he encountered the two again, he'd make it up to them, a promise he would not shrug off lightly.
As they navigated, the three came to the room with the knife and the small pile of money. Seeing how being poor this trading post got him nowhere, he decided to pocket the money as a resource. "The knife can be for whoever wants it," he told the two and waited for either of them to make a decision.
A bit of meandering made him notice this floor was a bit cramped; the hallways were tighter, many rooms were locked, albeit full of supplies, and that demon at the trading post was a comfort (for him), but not much.
Eventually he found himself bumping into the party of Koko, Satogi and Lance. At this point, the mage had lost any initial fear he had of the paladin; he approached them with a smile on his face, something he very rarely put on his face.
"Excuse me. I wish to speak to the student, if I may."
Sanul knew his request would sound odd to them; but, truly, he had good intentions. The boy has potential, and Sanul, having teached a few pupils before leaving to the Tower, felt like he could really help the young student. Plus, he wanted to get him away from Satogi; seeing he was taught a much more passive, simpler technique of magic, he could only guess Koko knew not much of the rivalry between religious bastards like the paladin, and users of the dark arts like himself.
The mage hoped Satogi wouldn't make him eat his words.
Until he saw it was Sanul, who had gone up ahead. Lance held his swords, but in a relaxed position, disappointed. He couldn't quite put a finger on it, but something seemed off about this floor. Where were the enemies? Where were the traps? It made him feel too settled and he didn't want to feel that way without being entirely sure it was just the four of them on the floor.
Upon hearing Sanul's request, he looked instinctively over to Koko. "I don't know. It's not for me to decide whether you speak with him. Only he can decide that." He looked at the paladin for any sign of resentment directed at Sanul. He wanted to know why the two of them feuded so...what was it in their history that made it to where the two couldn't get along?
Satogi immediately drew his sword and got into a combat stance at the sighting of Sanul. He had already killed this man once before, but perhaps he had been fooled but this dark caster. He had no intention of letting this man further his schemes, despite even what Koko wanted. "Move along, blasphemer, unless you want your head in a sconce. We do not want your evil magic here." It would probably be obvious as to what Satogi and Sanul had against each other. They were from strongly opposing belief systems and completely refused to cooperate with the other. It was rather pig headed of an entire faction or two to decide this but it was the way it was.
Koko meanwhile was unsure as to what to think about the offer in the first place. Why would a darker mage want to teach him? He had no interest in joining their guild nor did he really like using dark magic in the first place. He was however starting to feel that his own skills were inadequate for the tower but he would rather not mess around with darkness, since he was so afraid of it he would probably loose control very fast. Koko shook his head in denial and hid behind the two stronger warriors, waiting for Sanul to pass or attack.
The setting changes from The Tower, 4th Floor to The Tower
"Well, if you're gonna be all aggressive..." Clearly, he wouldn't get near to Koko unless Satogi stood down.
Another time. Patience would pay off for him someday.
Sanul began to leave and said one last thing before getting out of their hair:
"Watch for that tripwire. You almost set off a trap there."

Re: The Tower
Nah, jk. Lance and Koko ended up running into Satogi and helped him destroyed the crystal. After introductions, a spirit appeared and asked for help to reclaim his corpse. The paladin agreed wholeheartedly. We looked around the third floor and eventually found it guarded by an Almagatethingamabobby. Satogi lost his armor and damaged his shield in the fight and Koko's energy was sapped, but the combined efforts of Lance and Koko beat him. Lance decided to go look for another piece of armor for Satogi and ended up stumbling upon the altar, where Elyzabeth and Gakgak were. .He accidentally activated a trap, releasing four wratihs, two that pursued Lance and two that are currently after you (sorry). Lance ran away to the Crystal room where he opened the chest left by the Crystal, hoping it was some armor or a weapon to beat the wraith. It ended up being a Possessed Blade, another trap. Lance destroyed the Blade and was about the face the ghoul (the combination of the two wraiths) when Satogi caught up, blasting away the creature. A copy of Sanul appeared, more character development, and a flip of the bird later, we're on the fourth floor. That''s about it.
And with that, I won't be on today and it's very likely I won't be on tomorrow. Gotta fly out of Las Vegas today and it all depends on what I'm doing tomorrow. But I will definitely be back on the 2nd! See ya then...

MCP: I was in kind of the same way when the story was highlighted on you guys, Elyzabeth and Satogi. I had to take it upon myself to build the area around me and let Jeremiad apply the stats and challenges later. My suggestion, should you take it although you don't have to, would be to build the environment around you and describe the scenery. Maybe you find a spell or engraving on the wall. Hell, maybe even an enemy to fight or something. Maybe take it upon yourself to meditate/rest for 5+ hours to get back on the timeline if you feel that you're off. I can't decide that for you. But Jeremiad didn't seem to have a problem when I took over the story a little bit to keep Lance and Koko moving. I'm sure it'll be the same for you.
