Originally I had this whole complex web of mages, priest, and apostates as part of the lore, but in the end, I wanted a simpler RP, and so decided that magic should be an element reserved for another RP, and another time.
Same goes with elves. I wanted it to have a distinctly maritime feel, and elves are too High Fantasy for the setting.
In short, no and no.
To Zodia,
An archeologist/historian would be perfect, actually! A fine fellow to have in a crew of treasure hunter. Someone to deliver exposition and lore, translate a few things, etc...
